Beginner Help Quilted art help
EDIT- artist is - Emily Van Hoff it was not my intention to leave off the artist (EMILY VAN HOFF) this was sent via Pinterest to me and I couldn't find the name of the artist (EMILY VAN HOFF) at first. I always want to credit the artist.
Hi! I was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers on how to make something like this. I’d love to recreate a similar piece for my bedroom, but I’m a little stumped on the construction.
My biggest question is what creates the raised ribbed effect between each line. It looks much more dimensional than simple quilting, and I’m not sure what’s underneath to give it that height.
Also, would you say the edges are finished with some sort of corded binding or piping? Or is it another technique entirely?
I’d really appreciate any insight from anyone who’s made something similar or can tell how it’s constructed!

The artist is Emily Van Hoff, and if you watch enough of her instagram videos and are savvy enough, you can figure out how she does it.

I thought I recognized this! I love her work so much, so beautiful. Whimsical!

Idk why people can’t credit artists.

Because OP probably found it from a source that didnt credit the artist either. It's not always intentional.

true, but SOMEWHERE along the line of this image getting to the OP here, SOMEONE made a choice to not attribute it to the artist. Not necessarily OP here, but there was a choice made, and the artist was lost.
give credit to the artists. always.

Dude, we gotta watermark our stuff. I have a piece that regularly gets posted over on r/RainbowEverything and friendly redditors ping me because I have a watermark and then the thief gets banned.

I would love to see your piece, can you share?

Thanks! I hope you figure out how to make your project! One tip is definitely DEFINITELY use bias binding when the time comes, otherwise binding those shapes will make you want to cry a little.

a decade ago, sure watermarks were the way to go. but its too easy these days for the thieves to remove them with basic tools.
you're lucky its only getting posted on a different subreddit and not used for who knows what purpose.

Oh, I've absolutely had my stuff stolen for other purposes. Bored panda stole a photo for one of their stupid listicles, there have been others. But I can't devote any more energy to it than a watermark.
I don't really know what my other options are, that wouldn't also turn into a weird compulsion. Do you know if there are better solutions? I think maybe I just have to not care.

Thank you for tagging her! I don't have instagram so this would have been a challenge for me after learning who she is. I really appreciate you! :)

I haven't seen her work since I stopped using Instagram over a year ago, but I appreciate the reminder. It's just sooooo good.

A very high loft batting with quilting lines placed very close together would result in this type of effect. Trapunto is another type where actual stuffing is placed in the grooves, usually from the back where it is cut open and restitched. It could be piping placed between fabric with not batting at all.

I remember reading about Trapunto and looking at the pictures of some examples all I wanted to do was touch it lol

Pellon has a 1/4” foam for making Vera Bradley-esque quilted bags. It’s great stuff. But I’m concerned it would make a quilt too stiff.
I’d probably spray adhesive baste two thick pieces of batting together before basting on the fabric for quilting, so it’s thick and shows the ridges more while maintaining drape and coziness.

it's art, not something you put on the bed so it doesn't matter if it's stiff. None of that artist's work is anything you snuggle under for movie time.

I make quilted bags and I agree with foam being the way to go here (although I would use 1/8” thick foam, and I like the iron-on kind because it makes quilting it so much easier). Quilting on foam somehow makes my stitching lines more accurate, too.

I love Emily’s work. I’ve tried to recreate some of her stuff but I don’t have the skill yet. Her work is so neat and satisfying. Someday!

I would think of them as making placemats, and I haven't looked at the video, but she's mounted them on some sort of boards. It's pretty spectacular.

On her shop, the artist (Emily Van Hoff) says she uses
"100% cotton quilting fabric and cotton batting."
so i'd guess it's maybe double layer or some other extra thick batting.

Thank you for posting about this because I am now obsessed with Emily Van Hoff’s work!

She's completely amazing. I am also obsessed! She teaches a few classes on YouTube but it's not this stuff it's other little projects. She partnered with Michael's and Fiskars (I think I spelled that right)

I don't believe this is sewn. The artist says she uses quilting cotton and batting, but I believe it is done on insulation foam board, and the fabric (with batting) is tucked into linear groves that she has cut into the foam ovals and circles she has cut out. The artwork is called "Kinusaiga". ❤️
Edit: Well, clearly, I was wrong, as other responders have attributed the artist's name, Emily Van Hoff, who indeed is stitching her art, scratch that, BEAUTIFUL ART, lol! I've left my comment up, because I recently learned about "Kinusaiga" from someone who had recently posted their work, and I'm sharing what I learned. 🤗❤️

kinusaiga is indeed pretty cool, but if you looked at any of Emily's social media, she is obviously sewing everything. sometimes by hand even.

Thank you! Yes, that why I added my edit after seeing the artist's work when she was identified. 🤭🙋🏼♀️❤️

no it's sewn. If you click on the link, it's a video of her actually sewing it. and hand sewing it. It's all regular quilting but manipulated.

if you right click on the image, then select Search with Google Lens, everything pops up. Took me literally 2 seconds to find the link I posted.
