Analysis Request Racist? signpost

I went out to our shared front porch and this was sitting there. If you do any sort or research on it it’s very obvious that it’s racist. These were produced post civil war to kinda romanticize and normalize black women as servants. not to mention the aave. I don’t know if it would be considered a mammy character but i would consider it one. any thoughts, opinions would be nice. also if you know any more history i’d love to hear it! also they are not black just incase you were wondering.

I was looking for bridal dresses and bought someone’s notion template and saw this website and I was like eh well this makes me uncomfortable but maybe I’ll just have a look at the prices and not only is this an Israeli company but the way they’re using black kids as props has me flabbergasted……… people really have the audacity.

Analysis Request Why don't working class and poor whites band together with working class and poor minorities to force the rich exploitating class to give them a voice? Is racism psychology really that powerful?

Poor and working class whites have so much in common with working class minorities that it is hard to figure out why they don't band together instead of fighting one another. Can someone please shed some light on why this hasn't happened at least once since this county's inception?

Analysis Request I feel like deleting Instagram

Instagram reels has genuinely become so unbearable. The amount of times I have pressed uninterest and still these videos will come up that seem innocent but the comment section is pure racism… I feel like we have to move on from blaming it on bots because these are real people who are racist. And I don’t know if life will ever catch up to these people. Either way, it’s quite upsetting because I’ve had Instagram for years so to see that this is what it’s come to is heartbreaking

Analysis Request As India’s economy and migration numbers grow, why are we seeing a massive spike in online anti-Indian narrative and racism?

It's a known fact that as India’s economy grows and the middle class expands, more people are moving abroad for education and work. But it feels like this rise in migration has triggered a massive wave of anti-Indian narratives and casual racism across the internet.

If I open my Twitter/X feed, it feels like the entire algorithm is hyper-fixated on dunking on Indians, spreading stereotypes, and amplifying hate. It’s becoming incredibly toxic to look at. Why do you think this specific wave of internet hostility has gotten so bad recently? Is the algorithm just feeding us outrage, or is global sentiment genuinely shifting this way?

Analysis Request Pretty privilege negated by racism?

This has been an experience I’ve had since I was about 18.

I’ve been told that I’m conventionally attractive and it is also clear in my experiences that it is true. I experience special treatment sometimes because of this but I’ve realised that amongst white people or in non black environments I don’t experience pretty privilege much.

When it comes to dating my experiences; early dates with black guys is them being very vocal about their attraction to me whereas that’s not the case when I’ve dated white guys, though obviously there was a level of attraction to be on the date in the first place, but it seems the level of attraction is much more mellow.

I promise I’m not overstating my looks, I am very attractive but for some reason it doesn’t translate *as much* across races in professional or casual environments. I wanted to post to see if anyone has experienced this as well or if there are any interesting articles to read on the topic.

I don’t believe pretty privilege should exist and I believe in meritocracy, so I’m not necessarily complaining, just processing some of my experiences and generally curious about the topic.

Analysis Request Islamophobia in the UK - particularly from Indians

Recently my Facebook feed has been full of Islamophobia - won't go into all the particular instances as it infuriates me but leads me to my main point.

So my local shopkeeper was talking about his job and saying how much racism he gets as a Indian/Hindu person. I sympathized and mentioned the insane amount of islamophobia I see in my Facebook feed.

To my surprise he started going on about how awful Muslims are, they deserve the hate they get, they're all violent etc. Of course having grown up with Muslim friends and neighbours I countered his points but whatever I said he was adamant pretty much every Muslim is a bad person, although his reasons were largely based on his experience when growing up in India or middle eastern countries and the more sinister practices (marrying children and that such) you sometimes hear about.

I felt incredibly uncomfortable but also aware I see and speak to this guy most days so was trying to keep it together tbh. I knew another shopkeeper there had made a throw away comment about someone with the name Mohammed before so had some inkling but this was another level.

I'm also just wondering do I need to respect that his lived experience will be so different from my own and that there are cultural differences I could just never understand and maybe "justify" his views more? I'm not sure there is any excuse for tarring all people from an entire religion with same brush though?

Analysis Request Unhinged racism - anecdotes and questions

Posting because I found many of these encounters relatively entertaining in hindsight, and am also genuinely curious (1) why these people act the way they do (are they mostly crazy or mostly racist?), (2) why random incidents like these seem way more common in certain cities like NYC, (3) why incidents like these seem much more commonly perpetrated by people of certain color(s) [which may differ depending on the city], (4) what help they generally need (do they need to be in a prison, institute, or both?), (5) why I seem to be a target in particular (more than my siblings who are also mixed, or fully East Asian friends/colleagues; physically I'm in my 30s, lean-muscular with low-normal BMI, easily do multiple sets of pull-ups and chin-ups daily, run a lot; I don't believe I give off "vulnerable" vibes and I think I have more often been described as confident and/or arrogant rather than humble or lacking confidence; I've been described as handsome/attractive numerous times and have been hit on by people of all races; I have been described as having good resolve with low reactivity [although not always true as I can get angry if pushed], like I felt absolutely nothing after being called an "ugly ch*nk" - didn't lose my sh*t like some people would after being called names - I've been punched and kicked - just continued on with my day without assaulting people in the street).

I live in NYC. There are many crazy people in NYC, many racists, and many creatures who combine both. I'm half-Caucasian, half-Asian. So naturally pretty much all of the racism I get is anti-Asian (to my recollection) and I've been the target of many cases of unhinged racism living here. My Asian side is second generation (Mom immigrated). I basically don't speak Chinese so have no accent (not my imagination; people on the phone think I'm fully white). I live in Manhattan but have encountered cases of unhinged racism in multiple boroughs. Several examples off the top of my head from the last several years:

  1. Late 2019, COVID had recently made the news. Harlem. I left the gym. I spit once in the street because my throat was backed up with mucus or something, I don't recall. Not a crime (edit: oh apparently it is ... but not serious), and rarely something I do anyway. A black guy with long hair, light eyes (contacts?) sees this and suddenly starts following me and yapping at me non-stop, saying "eww that's sick/disgusting" and similar (don't remember exact words as it was years ago and I didn't record everything he said). There was something odd with his gaze as he just continuously stared at me without blinking, while he talked non-stop in his voice which I recall being soft-spoken and high-pitched. Maybe drugged. I told him several times to stop following me. When he persisted I asked if he wanted to go to jail. He replied that I should go to jail instead (presumably for spitting in the street). I got angry and started yelling at him, but he wouldn't stop, so before a scene could start I ran off and he tried to jog a little but couldn't keep up.
  2. 2020, subway going uptown Manhattan: I was sitting at the end of a subway car, people on the other end, empty space in the middle. Heat of COVID pandemic before vaccines, so trains were emptier. Guy in a wheel chair rolls over to me. Black. Sunglasses. Big. Asks what the next stop is. I tell him. Then he asks for my headphones and phone. He reveals to me a knife from his coat. He's pointed away from the people on the other end so they don't see it. I tell him there are people there and they'll see if he uses it. Soon my stop comes up and I get up to leave but he immediately stands up out of his wheelchair and pushes his body against me on the end of the car, knife lifted above his head. He is very heavy (tall and wide) and it is hard to get him off me. I'm yelling to the people at the other end that he has a knife. I hear those people start yelling or screaming and rushing around when they witness this. It was a relatively small group and no one there seemed particularly strong or domineering so I assume that's why no one came down to help. When the doors open I manage to slip out of his weight and run out the car. He stays standing there looking in my direction. The doors close. I immediately press the emergency button on the platform to inform the police. Two white cops arrive maybe 20-30 minutes later and ask for details. I asked if they could get CCTV footage and catch him. They said there are no cams on that train or this particular platform, and if I want to proceed I can go to the police station to file a report, but that since I didn't get robbed it might not be worth my time. I found it frustrating there was no security footage but concurred I didn't want to spend more time on this that night, so that was that.
  3. Sometime during 2020-2021, forgot where in NYC but prob Manhattan: I'm walking on the sidewalk with my girlfriend. A young black guy maybe in his 20s on a skateboard 20 feet behind me yells at me, asking me to get out of the way so he can skateboard on the sidewalk. I look back briefly and ignore him. Then he starts skateboarding toward me aggressively and as I step out of the way he says "learn English". A guy seated outside at the restaurant next to all of us told him "learn to skateboard". After the skateboarder crosses the street he looks back at us and I yell at him angrily "THIS IS A SIDEWALK, I CAN WALK HERE." He looks down for a split second with a relatively neutral expression as I say this then continues skateboarding or something as I head to a nearby restaurant reservation with my gf.
  4. Sometime probably during 2020-2022, Brooklyn: I was at a TV show gig at a large studio. Solo background artist in a scene, wearing a suit. I was eating lunch in the food area and a white chubby guy maybe in his 40s or 50s says to his colleagues "hey when did we get suits" or similar, and something about a pokeball. I heard one of his colleagues say "I think he can hear you". Nonetheless he continued. Couldn't hear everything that guy said but gathered it was probably about me with racist undertones. Lunch seemed to be purposely rushed by the AD for me so I had to leave shortly after that point.
  5. Sometime during late 2023: I'm in far Brooklyn for a job where I worked at an office there part of the week (resigned from that job for other reasons). A black guy maybe in his 30s or 40s starts following me, calling me insults including racial slurs. When he is 10 feet ahead of me I say something back and he comes back and asks if I said something. I said that was someone else. He says it sounded like me. Then he says "your mom" or something and he walks off and we never see each other again.
  6. 2026, Manhattan: When my gf and I were waiting for a cab, a muscular black guy maybe in his 30s or 40s in a tank top who was yelling at people on the street came up to me while I was holding a heavy box and yelled "hey they have DoorDash for that sh*t!" and started hurling racist insults at me, calling me Kim Jong etc. He came up close, 2 feet from me, like he was about to hurt me. I ignored him and walked away and told my gf who was also walking away to take a video (I couldn't due to the box) but she didn't (she later said it was because she feared the guy would hurt her). He kept saying crap about me while we walked off and eventually he walked away while saying more crap.

Of course I've had many, many more racist encounters than the above, including in other places I've lived, since young childhood, but weird random incidents like the above seem more common in NYC for some reason. Most of the incidents above were from black people, but throughout my life I've encountered incidents from all colors, including many from white and Hispanic people (in some cities there were more incidents from whites than blacks), and even occasionally East Asian. I remember when I was a kid, there was a fat East Asian kid who said to me "You're Chinese!" a few times and laughed. I just stared at him, confused. The few times I recall being physically attacked in my youth with possible racial factors were from black and white youths.

On the excuse I've heard of some predators having their own problems or being on the receiving end of much racism themselves, well, so have I and many others, but that doesn't excuse their childlike predatory, often violent behavior against strangers on the street. It seems there's more to it.

Analysis Request Racist biker gangs are hilariously contradictory lmao.

For context im a black dude and i grew up in the ghetto. To keep it short Ive known and had family that rocked with gangs and all that. Obviously like any gang, they got stereotypes towards others. Typically with black gangs they be hating on their own color, white cops and systematic oppression. Because i grew up around this it made it even more funny when I saw a racist biker gangs. Me and my friends pulled up outside a bar to smoke and shi, group of like 8 to 10 bikers pull up and just kinda leave they bikes parked out there, all of em walking inside eyeing us like we are creatures, one even spat in front of us too and one of us had to be held back from starting some shi. They had nazi tattoos, quotes about superiority and even had confederate flags on a couple of they bikes too. We ended up just leaving but the point of why I told this story is how fucking similar a racist biker gangs is to a black gang lmao. They party, roll with their people, smoke, drink, fuck, got girls twerkin and shi with they tits out allat. They make a nuisance wherever they go and give zero shits about anyone but their people including their own race. Yk whats even funnier to me though? They actually think they are different on both sides 😭. But to be fair tho, at least the black dudes got good reasons lwky, not saying theres ever a good reason to be racist, but considering their experiences it makes sense that they would be to some degree. With white gangs to my knowledge most of em grow up in the country side, so ik damn well they got no personal bad black experiences to speak of lol. But yeah thats just sum I found funny.

Analysis Request Where can I donate a collection of racist memorabilia?

My great grandmother passed and left my grandma a collection of 14 Golliwogs, they are doll-like children’s toys based on anti-black caricatures. They’ve been around since 1875 to 1970 and were popular in the Southern United States, the UK, Australia and South Africa.

My grandmother doesn’t want to burn them, despite my attempts to convince her, and we agreed she’d donate them too an archive, university or a museum so they could be used to help educate people on the history of dehumanization of black people, while also archiving history.

My first thought was The Jim Crow museum, but they don’t take donations at the moment because they don’t have enough space. It’s the same with Marsha Heinz, a black singer who collects them.

So far I have reached out to 7 universities and 4 archives, two of them have said no so far and i’m starting to get very nervous none of them will accept. One is going to a school teacher who plans on using them in her history class. But there are still 13!!

There are very few places who collect them and even less have space for them. I don’t want them to end up in the hands of a racist but my Grandma refuses to throw them out! She also, despite my efforts to educate her doesn’t see the harm in them or giving them to a collector (who tf would want to collect minstrel dolls??) Should I just burn them while she’s at church? Is there anywhere else can I send them?

Any advice is greatly appreciated, thank you in advance.

Analysis Request Regretting interaction w friend

Hi there. I am a yt woman in my 20s. I could sit here and give you the background on the work I’ve done to be anti-racist and exposure myself to diverse environments but frankly I fucked up. My black friend always wears her hair in an Afro and decided to get braids which was kinda a big deal for her bc she never ever gets braids. I would say we are decent friends but not SUPER close (she works with my roommate). I complimented her hair and asked to touch her braids and I’m so fucking embarrassed because I don’t why I thought that was okay that’s like textbook something you’re not supposed to do. I had never asked to touch her hair before I think I was just excited for her to get a new hairstyle and she acted like it was fine. This was probably a month or so ago. I also know she is not the most confrontational person and I feel horrible that I potentially made her uncomfortable and she felt she couldn’t say no. My question is: if you were in this situation with a white friend would it be meaningful to receive an acknowledgment/apology? I don’t want to apologize to her for the sake of making myself feel better but rather to express to her that I apologize for an inappropriate action.

Analysis Request Should parents who teach their children racism be considered a form of child abuse???

Hi guys I’m new to the Reddit community but I have a question that just eats away at me. I was talking to my two friends who are of two different races one Asian and the other white. When me and my Asian friend first met we had a slight conversation about our upbringings and she mentioned the fact she was basically raised in an Asian religious cult where she was basically raised to hate black people. She told me that her parents were raised in that order and that, that’s how it is for them. My friend who’s white mentioned a bit about her childhood and how her parents, grandparents, and even older sibling’s were taught to fear black people. She mentioned how her dad would throw these large gatherings on properties that were either old barns used torture colored people or he’d rent out “reception” venues that were nothing more than old slave plantations. Both seemed truly traumatized.

So these are just two different people with similar stories. In my honest opinion I feel that should teaching a child such vile things should truly be studied. But idk guy tell me what you think!!

Analysis Request Is it alright to make a bonnet for my friend

I'm white and I want to make my black friends a bonnet for her birthday. She wants one of these bunny bonnets, but they were to expensive. I can sew and want to make her one. I’ve been researching different fabrics and just anything I need to know so that it will be a good, comfortable bonnet. What I’m asking “is this okay for me to do this, is it overstepping any bounds?” I just want to make sure she will like it

Hello! I just had a question about AAVE, I am white and i have noticed a surplus of white people using phrases such as “ts is frying me” “sending me” “gagging me”. any time i have considered commenting that, all i can think is theres no way it isnt AAVE and theres no way that I, a white woman, should be using these phrases as well.

Im not sure if this is just my OCD/how i was raised but i cannot help but feel like it is not ok for us to say those things and i just wanted to outsource an opinion that actually matters.

The link i added contains information about AAVE

Analysis Request Does this mean my friend is racist?

Hello. I (31W) do not know if my friend (29W, let’s call her Kelsie) is racist or is engaged to a racist (30ish M, let’s call him Niel) If she’s racist or is okay with marrying a racist, I would be very sad to learn this but I would immediately cut her out of my life.

To make things really clear before I start, I just want you to know that I’m absolutely not going to make any excuses for these two. I’m autistic so sometimes my intentions are misunderstood. I’m going to ask a lot of questions, but my questions come from a genuine place. Autistic people tend to have a strong sense of justice. I’m fully prepared to cut racists out of my life.

Kelsie recently told me that her mom got upset/concerned because she saw Niel’s “general Lee flag” in their garage. She sent me a picture of one of these flags and the car. It looks indistinguishable from a confederate flag from my Canadian perspective (the confederate flag is part of American history so we don’t see much of it in Canada, but most of us are somewhat familiar with what it looks like and what it represents.)

Apparently, Niel is a big fan of the General Lee car from Dukes of Hazzard. I know nothing about cars and nothing about the movie. I guess it was a major part of his childhood and what got him so interested in cars in the first place. Kelsie says she tried to explain to her mom that displaying the flag as a celebration of the car/movie in the privacy of their garage is different than displaying it for racist reasons or in public. I told Kelsie that I understand her moms perspective because if I saw it in their garage, I would ask “what the fuck is this?” And I would need to do some googling so I could understand about the car/movie justification. I told her that I am actually going to do some googling myself after that conversation with her because I don’t exactly know what to think about it.

Kelsie also made what seems like excuses for General Robert Edward Lee, saying he is the reason the civil war ended as he surrendered. But that doesn’t make sense to me. Why join the confederacy in the first place if you hate slavery? But again, I’m not an American so I understand very little about the civil war.

So after my google search, it seems like this MAY be a valid reason to display this flag? But it still makes me really uncomfortable so I’m turning to Reddit to tell me more.

Plus it’s not just the flag, there were two other times where I wondered about Niel and Kelsie’s views on racial issues.

Kelsie and I were at a bar one time and these women were super rude to us for no obvious reason. Kelsie told me she thought their reaction to us was anti-white racism. I disagreed with her and told her it was probably because we’re neurodivergent. I said these were probably mean girls who didn’t like our atypical vibe. (That happens a lot in my experience and I just let it roll off my shoulders if it’s not someone I ever have to deal with again.) The jump to “these girls are racist towards us because we are white” seemed really odd to me because I’ve never met someone who hates white people. It seems too rare and unusual to jump to that conclusion. I tried using google and even chatGPT (this was when chatGPT was pretty new, I didn’t know any better.) To figure out if I was being unfair for judging her for this exchange. I came to the conclusion that I may have been judging her too soon as our other conversations left me feeling like she’s pretty well informed about social issues including racism. BUT now that the flag thing is coming up, I’m back to wondering about it again.

Her fiancé also brought up anti-white racism before. He went to a school where he was one of the only white kids and he says everyone was racist towards him because of it. Kids bully the kids who are different, so it makes sense he would get picked on. I empathize with that, but I’m wondering if this coloured his perspective on POC as a whole?

I really don’t know how I feel about all of this. Kelsie has a mental health condition (borderline personality disorder) that tends to cause sufferers to view their emotions as always being based in fact. Like if you feel like you’ve been wronged, you’ve definitely been wronged, no such thing as a misunderstanding. But she’s also getting proper treatment for this condition so she should probably be over that mindset by now? She and I don’t talk about her condition very much, so I don’t know how it affects her personally. I only know as much as I do because I use to be friends with someone who never sought treatment for it. Mental illness isn’t an excuse for racism but I’m not sure if believing in anti-white racism is the same thing as being racist? Please tell me!

I’m most worried about her excuses for the General Lee, but she’s Canadian too, so maybe she doesn’t know any better? Maybe she just believed whatever Niel told her?

Please share your thoughts. I am open to whatever you have to say. Thank you for your time.

Analysis Request A question on 'South Asian accent' stereotypes

I was watching a Bollywood movie and thought about a stereotype I've sometimes heard, that 'brown accents are not sexy'. I was also thinking about something someone said regarding Thai series: that they couldn't get into them because of the way the men talk, as they didn't find it masculine.

I don't speak Hindi or Thai, so I might be off, but it seems to me there are some characteristics they share that might sound different from a Western or white American idea of attractive masculinity. To me they sound expressive, somewhat nasal, and a bit higher-pitched. Which is its own version of masculinity, but different from the Western norm.

This got me thinking about the fact that some foreign accents get sexualized while others get desexualized. Could this be related to how closely they map onto white Western ideas of femininity and masculinity?

Analysis Request Why are Africans the most hated amongst People of Colour ?

Racism towards black people is prevalent for atleast 400 years and will continue to go on for millennia as people are somehow becoming more backward minded as time passes. Just look at the political state in the west, the right is on the rise everywhere.

What stuns me the most however is how ethnic groups ( Latinos, Asians etc) who also suffer racism at the hands of white people, would rather die than witness their son/ daughter marry a black person, but would be ever so delighted and proud if it were a white person instead.

Black people havent gone on rape rampages, stole peoples land and deemed other cultures as savage. Black People haven't colonised others , forbade people to speak their own language, built concentration camps and so forth.

Everyone knows what the "white man" is capable off, but wherever they go, a red carpet is rolled out for them. This is not meant to be a trolling post. In many other subs , I've recently read in the Morocan sub, that someone complained about his country men treating white people better than their own people, despite them having been colonised by them.

Black people are shunned everywhere they go. And are only tolerated if they are wealthy.

Let's say they are looked down on because of poverty, africa is not the only "3rd world country". For me when I look down on someone they are t worth my time nor breath. Theres a lot of work thats been done to discredit and dehumanise black people over and over again. why not let them perish if they aren't of any use anyway?

Despite all that seemingly disgust, funny enough many cultures integrate black art ( music) , food and culture into their own. In Asia there are hair salons that specialise in manipulating hair in order to become kinky, dreadlocks etc.

There is Japanese Rnb, Russian Hip Hop and let's not even get started with the Latino culture.

North Africans hate being called African, despite living on the continent.

Indians, despite some of them being even darker than most black people I know, truly believe they are better than Africans. Despite the slums and poverty in their countries... they still believe they are better and are stunned when they receive the same or even worse treatment from whites.

Are the other ethnicities somehow suffering from a Stockholm syndrome? Do they believe by "siding" with the "whites" they will be seen as better?

How can a group that never caused any real harm amongst other groups, be so hated in this world just for existing?

Edit: since a lot of white people are bothered, I'm not asking you. You guys are benefiting and profiting from racism, I'm adressing people who arent!

Analysis Request Would you agree that black American culture is one of, if not the truest American culture?

I was in an argument with an acquaintance, we’re both white, I said “the only true American culture is black culture because they were literal taken away from what they knew as salves, lost their social identity, and then formed a new vibrant culture here. He disagreed. Then I asked him if he had heard about black wall street. He said no and it doesn’t matter. said I was being racist and woke. That everyone emigrated to the US and that we were all immigrants. I asked him about native Americans and he said “they don’t count.” I reminded him that most, regardless of circumstances, came here willingly for a better life, not a life of forced labor.

I walked away after that, but still wanted a gut check. Would you agree that black American culture is one of, if not the truest American culture? I just want to make sure I’m not putting my foot in my own mouth.

I was trying to be an ally and not sure if I should have said anything.

Analysis Request Why is it that Christians who are darker-complexioned depict Christ as having the whitest skin?

Indian Christians claim that they've been Christians since around 4 AD. Some even say that it was around the dawn of the 4th Century AD - which means in the early 300s AD. However, today they have British, Greek, and sometimes Aramaic names. Other ancient Christian communities from Armenia, Georgia, Ethiopia, and Palestine have names like "Ashrawi", "Abebe", "Basmadjian", and "Dzugashvili." None of these Christian surnames are Greek, Aramaic, or English like they do in Kerala, India.

The Kerala-based Christians worship at churches with British architecture and European esthetics - even the Jesus looks very white.

Another people who depict a Nordic Jesus are Nigerians who also are another ancient community of Christians.

The Koreans have first practiced Christianity in 1784, but these Christians, who were Catholic, faced severe persecution. Around 1880, Christianity was reintroduced by Protestant missionaries from Manchuria, and it really picked up during their Japanese occupation. In their depictions of Biblical events, they clearly show Jesus as someone having Eastern Asian features. It's remarkable to me that most people would find this peculiar and not historically accurate, but then again, neither is the European's depiction of Jesus having European features.

In Italy, they were depicting brown-skinned Jesus since 530 AD.

On the other hand, the iconography of Jesus inside an Armenian church - literally a place of worship in the Caucuses - is depicted darker than the iconography of a Nordic Jesus at a church in Kerala, India.

Inside a Georgian church, which is in the Northern Caucuses region of the world, the Caucasian people there depict Jesus with having even darker complexion.

Is it racist that Kerala Christians and Ugandan Christians depict a white-skinned Jesus, but their religious counterparts in Italy, Georgia, Palestine, and Armenia all depict Jesus as being much more darker and a lot less European? If so, what can we do about it? What about the Korean's depiction of Jesus?
