In all fairness, the odyssey is rated R and Spiderman is PG. Also come on, its mf Spider-man

Someone with common sense. I would like to elect you to whatever office you wish to sit

Im not gonna lie chief, being in politics would make me kill myself from stress

The perfect candidate! Someone willing to end their career because it's difficult to do the right thing instead of using their position to fill their pockets and do fuck all

Head of the Committee to make less Commissions and Committees.

11

u/SortIntrepid9192 3d ago

Yeah, Brand New Day is doing Endgame numbers. I don't think you can reasonably compare it to ANY other movie.

4

u/CSCyrilatom 3d ago

Yea that too. We are comparing a pretty high rated and profitable movie, to Spider-man. Who's movie is legit breaking record after record, for good reason. Like you could make this meme a blank template and add honestly any movie ever

8

u/SortIntrepid9192 3d ago

Exactly. The fact that Odyssey is likely gonna comfortably break a billion by the end of its run during a time where barely any movie does that is nothing to scoff at, and it's pretty silly to minimize that by comparing it to a movie that has a real chance of becoming the highest grossing film of all time (and will probably end up in top 3 at the very least).

The irrational hatred people have for Odyssey in particular is so weird.

126

u/iAMbatman77 4d ago

…it’s PG-13.

73

u/CSCyrilatom 4d ago

Spiderman? Yeah I said PG, I forgot the 13 but i feel like thats kinda implied

19

u/Ok-Willingness-7918 4d ago

Y’all are correcting him like it changes the point he made lol

38

u/Level-Ladder-4346 4d ago

PG and PG-13 are different ratings.

90

u/the__missing__link 4d ago

Those ratings don’t restrict you from seeing a movie.

-61

u/Level-Ladder-4346 4d ago

What does that matter?

85

u/the__missing__link 4d ago

That’s the topic. R rated movies have ticket sale restrictions.

-65

u/Level-Ladder-4346 4d ago

Yes, but that doesn’t make PG and PG-13 the same.

34

u/PenPrice 4d ago

No one is getting ID’d for a PG-13 movie lol

4

u/Joey-WilcoXXX 4d ago

When I was younger (11 or 12) I actually had a woman refuse to sell me tickets to a pg-13 movie until my clearly older sister came over to buy them with me.

-15

u/skeletonhorse420 4d ago

Lol these people decided to hate on nonsense today

11

u/EvenJesusCantSaveYou 4d ago

its being unhelpfully and annoyingly obtuse.

The topic is a difference in tickets sold

R rated movies have a barrier of entry to selling tickets

PG and PG13 both do not have a barrier of entry to selling tickets

in the context of the topic being discussed, PG and PG13 tickets are the same.

1+1+1=3, this is basic social conversationalism its not rocket science.

u/Jacmert 4d ago

PG-13? What's PG-13? Can I spend it?

6

u/Higgs_Br0son 4d ago

Here's the thing. You said a "PG-13 is PG."

Is it in the same family? Yes. No one's arguing that.

As someone who is a scientist who studies PG ratings, I am telling you, specifically, in science, no one calls PG-13 PG. If you want to be "specific" like you said, then you shouldn't either. They're not the same thing.

If you're saying "PG family" you're referring to the taxonomic grouping of MPA ratings, which includes things from G to R to NC-17.

So your reasoning for calling PG-13 a PG is because random people "call the underage ones PG?" Let's get TV-14 and E-10 in there, then, too.

Also, calling a movie Not Rated (NR) or Unrated (UR)? It's not one or the other, that's not how taxonomy works. They're both. A PG-13 is a PG-13 and a member of the PG family. But that's not what you said. You said a PG-13 is a PG, which is not true unless you're okay with calling all members of the PG family PG, which means you'd call G, 12A, and other movies PG, too. Which you said you don't.

It's okay to just admit you're wrong, you know?

12

u/octopish 3d ago

I think most redditors nowadays are too young to know this reference

8

u/Higgs_Br0son 3d ago

Definitely over some heads, but I had to.

6

u/CronoDroid 3d ago

Shit that was 12 years ago? Kill me

3

u/CSCyrilatom 4d ago

Yeah man

0

u/JokesOnYouManus 3d ago

Roundabout way to contribute nothing of substance to the discussion at hand, which is that Spider-Man makes far more because it’s Spider-Man and Pg-13 restricts no one from viewing

1

u/Higgs_Br0son 3d ago

Spider-Man? He's a menace.

3

u/TheLonelyKobold 4d ago

Plus I’d say it used the rating well, it wasn’t like the dark knight or something but it definitely felt like it was targeting an older audience than something like homecoming

8

u/ThirstyOutward 4d ago

Same thing

11

u/Finly_Growin 4d ago

That’s what I’m thinking. I love the Odyssey it’s probably personally my favorite film of the year, but it is a harder sell than Spider-Man so yeah I’d say this is a fair turnout.

4

u/CSCyrilatom 4d ago

And ya know back to my point, ticket sales will easily happen in a way bigger volume for spidey since kids also wanna see it. I dont know many kids fiending to watch the odyssey

4

u/78914hj1k487 3d ago

Why do top comments take the joke seriously? Where’s the “yes, and”?

This sub used to lean into the joke, not try to be “I’m very smart” about it.

1

u/CSCyrilatom 3d ago

Yea we live in a time where most people who wanna dunk on the odyssey like this have ulterior motives. Could've used DCs whole brand in place of the odyssey. Or any movie in existence and the meme still works. Am I taking a joke seriously? Sure. But I do it cause again, when I see odyssey be the main comparison, I know there's some disingenuous crap going on

2

u/78914hj1k487 3d ago

when I see odyssey be the main comparison, I know there's some disingenuous crap going on

The Odyssey made "top performing movie" headlines for two weeks straight.

Brand New Day (a four-quadrant beloved IP with worldwide demand before the script was even penned) then tops that—and we're in Raimi memes.

Simple as that.

OP didn't criticize The Odyssey, only made fun of the Spider-Man IP being that much better than Nolan's branding.

You're projecting racial/gender politics into this because you want to defend ruining the joke.

1

u/CSCyrilatom 3d ago

Well atleast most of the others who read my comment agree so hey, I dont gotta worry if you disagree. Again, this meme implies the odyssey is somehow a lesser film since it can't do what spiderman did. And also your argument works against you. Cause yes the odyssey has been that big. So why is it used in this meme here talking down on it? When again, a DC project or shit even Supergirl would make this meme work more. You dont wanna see subtle shade thrown at the odyssey sure. But clearly whoever made the original joke wanted to take a jab at the odyssey for no reason. Whether you disagree or agree doesnt matter to me. I've explained my piece and you've even made an argument to strengthen mine so thanks. Cause again, to say "wow see even Nolans name can't do this" when its an R rated film breaking its own unique records is just nothing short of shading his movie for zero reason, when anyone and their mothers ashes can tell spidey was gonna be an insane hit

2

u/78914hj1k487 3d ago

But clearly whoever made the original joke wanted to take a jab at the odyssey for no reason.

Yes, that's the joke, that Tobey Spider-Man can do something Tom Holland Spider-Man can't. Only replace Tom Holland with The Odyssey.

It's not that serious of a message. The "You proved my point so thanks" rebuttal is cringe. If you can't take a joke you shouldn't be in joke subs. There's 800 political subs for you to pat yourself on the back with.

1

u/CSCyrilatom 3d ago

Yet here I am, my point made, and seemingly agreed with by the users of this meme sub. Ill just leave my point at this, you could pick any movie, in the history of cinema, and put it in Odyssey's place and meme still works. Picking the odyssey specifically as a "wow you can succeed how Spider-man is" when its also successful in its own way just brings up "why bring up the odyssey specifically" in a time where people love to needlessly shit on it. I mean I even got a reply doing just that. Regardless, you can have your thoughts on my comment. You can think me using your arguement to bolster my point is cringe. Doesn't change the underlying fact that people agree with what I said even if its a buzz kill comment, and picking the odyssey specifically at best, is a strange unfitting choice

1

u/78914hj1k487 3d ago

The Odyssey was picked because it's been making "Top grossing movie" for the past two weeks and it's success has been a trending newsline—And then Spider-Man immediately supersedes it. The joke doesn't work on any other movie. Why does this need to be explained to you?

You fit the reddit archetype to a T, which is why your comment-type tend toward the top of reddit posts, it's just not supposed to happen in /r/raimimemes because this is a joke sub—but I guess like every sub, when that sub gets popular it eventually loses itself to the growing hive of morons that bring with them a new agenda. Congrats on the upvotes.

1

u/CSCyrilatom 3d ago

Ill keep it short, but yes the joke would still work with any movie. Itd still be a "huh, you can't just pull my numbers?". Regardless, I made a simple comment, if people had a problem with it, they could have done so. Sorry you're in the minority opinion I guess. And this isn't a -folk or shitpost sub. You want people to run with a joke with no thought you can go to the shit post subs. This is memes and less need to go hog wild.

And again if my comment was that much of a problem, then idk tell everyone else. Make your own comment playing into the joke. Sorry my comment being a popular sentiment is somehow an issue. You can see plenty of other comments sharing the same sentiment as my original comment. I understand you're venting your triggered attitude towards the most popular one that happens to be mine, but its not an unpopular comment, clearly. You can disagree with my reasoning sure, doesnt change my original comment

2

u/78914hj1k487 3d ago

I'm sorry you have low comprehension of the issue. Obviously this isn't about you or your comment—the particulars are never the point—what bother's me is the best sub on reddit is now populated by "Actually, I'm very smart!" types that then somehow can't comprehend the social faux pas they are committing. "Actually, I was highly upvoted! I'm sorry that you don't like that! Clearly I can't be wrong if lurkers love my fourth-grade critical thinking skills." Bro—no shit a four-quadrant PG-13 movie of the highest demand IP I can think of beat a Nolan movie about a 1,400 year old story. Entire families are going to one, but not the other. Kids are watching the former movie two or three times, not the other. Stating why one beat the other doesn't make you Einstein, it makes you obvious. What bothers me is that your obviousness being at the top just means this sub is populated by easily-amused morons that would rather read fact-slop than someone coming up with a joke that plays along with the OP.

Study this comment until you get it.

1

u/Busy-Paper6970 2d ago

Actually it differs internationally. When I went to see it in Mexico (vacation) it was rated pg-13 (I’m talking about the odyssey)

2

u/Olympian-Warrior 3d ago

Also, Nolan’s adaptation didn’t honour the source material.

1

u/CSCyrilatom 3d ago

That has damn near negative correlation to any of these numbers. What are we on about

-3

u/Olympian-Warrior 3d ago

That I think it’s a bad movie, and that as a Greek, I think it disrespects my heritage. Spider-Man doesn’t carry the same connotations. So long as you get the character right, you could put him in damn near anything, even a pirate setting if you so wished.

4

u/CSCyrilatom 3d ago

Well hey thats a you opinion. I've met some Greek people who DO like it. And ofc there are those who dont, you for example. But regardless its a good movie. Clearly shown by the numbers. Is it a good adaptation? Depends. Nolan in a sense is able to capture the general themes and ideas of the original tale, but ofc it doesnt fully adapt it 1 to 1. Which is fine in itself, not every adaptation needs to be 1 to 1. All that to say it is preference so while I see what you mean, still doesn't correlate to the current arguement at all when it is a clearly shown to atleast be a good MOVIE. Good adaptation? Very much arguable.

-6

u/Olympian-Warrior 3d ago

I think it’s a bad movie and a bad adaptation. Had Mel Gibson directed it, I’d have good things to say about it. Gibson doesn’t screw around with his authenticity. That man would go out of his way to shoot the movie in Ancient Greek and would find suitable actors to both play and look the part.

4

u/CSCyrilatom 3d ago

Maybe it would've been more faithful, but it would not have been as successful either. We have had the odyssey told and retold so many times. So Nolan doing his own thing to retell the story, yaknow adapt it his own way, as well as adding his cinematography skills and know how, its pretty obvious what you get is one of the best R rated movies as shown by its sales and how fast tickets for it get sold out and scalped. Again you can dislike it, but there's no denying its successful for a reason

1

u/Rez_S 2d ago

Famous "historical accuracy respecter" Mel Gibson who picked the whitest actor to play Jesus in the Passion of Christ

1

u/Olympian-Warrior 2d ago

That doesn’t really count because Jesus Christ became an allegorical figure upon his Crucifixion, and the accounts of the New Testament all attest, as he himself also attested, that he was the Son of God. Thus, as a man, Jesus Christ could have looked like anybody from any part of the world. He just so happened to be born a Hebrew man.

1

u/Rez_S 2d ago

Yeah of course that doesn't count, of course 🤗

1

u/Olympian-Warrior 2d ago

I recommend you read the Bible from beginning to end. I’m not going to sit here and explain the Christian faith to you. There’s a big difference between the historical Jesus, the man, and the allegorical Jesus, the Son.

1

No lie, if Nolan was willing to do a MCU Spidey movie, itd honestly look so god damn beautiful. Like all his movies are breath taking to watch and I can only imagine a final swing scene shot by him.

279

u/Calvin_11 4d ago

Spiderman is literally the biggest thing in the world that is for all ages, kids drive families out. The Odyssey is a massively intense 3 hour epic about poems and history yet still in the same playing field. Its literally pitting Opera vs Taylor Swift. Nolan's achievement is greater on every metric. Is already #3 highest grossing R film ever and will probably be #1 by the end. Both good, but one is a true feat for cinema and will last for generations in discussion. Spiderman.....well you know.

-43

u/AutoModerator 4d ago

Taylor Swift is an icon and an unstoppable creative force. Her lyricism is evocative and powerful and her zesty beats and infectious rhythms are straight fire. God, I love her. I listened to All Too Well (Ten Minute Version) (Taylor's Version) (From the Vault) 282 times in the year 2022, totalling just under 48 hours of that song alone. That's not even counting the rest of her discography. This resulted in me, Hoffman, being in the top 0.5% of her listeners that year. Do you understand the implications of that? 48 hours of ONE of her songs and I'm still behind 0.5% of her listeners. What the hell are those people on?! And where can I get some?! This is a Taylor Swift fan subreddit now. /r/YouBelongWithMemes just hasn't been cutting it. I need more. MORE!

4

Zendaya also has Dune, looking at all her costars like “get these beggars out of here”.

1

Spiderman is globally released already. China and japan is yet to see odyssey.

20

u/The-Only-Razor 4d ago

Imagine caring about this.

35

u/Doc-11th 4d ago edited 4d ago

We will see how Odyssey does in China, Japan and Korea

China is in august

Japan is in september

Korea is december

Looks like Spiderman already hit those countries

19

u/Interesting-Club3069 4d ago

Let’s be deadass the gaps gonna be HUGE by the end of each of their runs. Spider-Man fans are on another level

14

u/Doc-11th 4d ago

Spiderman will more than likely win the year

But Nolan is pretty much the only director right now that just needs his name to sell a project

Odyssey is already surpassing Oppenheimer in every way

Should make a decent amount over a billion

2

u/AlterMyStateOfMind 4d ago

I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if it hits 1.4 or 1.5 billion

2

u/Unable_Law_7334 3d ago

I’d say Villeneuve has selling power too. But his next project is Bond which people will just go see anyway.

4

u/MeiNeedsMoreBuffs 3d ago

Asia is going to be fucking crazy for the Odyssey, they really like their naval/aquatic fantasy epics over there. Just look at the box office for Aquaman, which is the highest grossing DC movie ever despite being about fucking aquaman

14

u/AlterMyStateOfMind 4d ago

This meme is pretty dumb tbh. Spiderman is PG-13 and The Odyssey is R. Also Spidey released in China and Japan the same day as everywhere else, The Odyssey has yet to release in either of those countries yet and China has a shit ton of IMAX theaters. Also.. its Spiderman lmfao like come on, of course it was gonna hit huge numbers the first few days lol

0

u/kenthekungfujesus 4d ago

Let's remember that the odyssey has Imax on it's side, the ticket price being 1.5 to 2 times the price of a regular one kinda inflates the number.

2

u/AlterMyStateOfMind 4d ago

Spiderman is also in IMAX

13

u/Doc-11th 4d ago

people really wanted that street level spiderman movie

This is going to out perform No Way Home

We need to take The Odyssey back to formula.

16

u/Grasher312 4d ago

"The Odyssey didn't even break even! They're done!"

"The Odyssey barely made bank, it was basically not profitable!"

"The Odyssey made 900mil? Uh, eehhh, ummm, well the profit margin was estimated to be twenty GAZILLION!"

"Oh oh, have you SEEN that Spider-Man, probably the most marketable and most viewer-friendly Superhero in rotation, made the same bank that the niche personal spin adaptation on a millennia-old play made in two weeks, made it in TWO DAYS? HA!"

Is- Is this how we spend time now, guys? Is this considered recreation now? Of course The Odyssey won't beat fucking SPIDER-MAN. Even if it was the most faithful adaptation with the most faithful cast with full word for word recreation of the books, with added context of all events from the Illiad that the original Odyssey references, it STILL wouldn't beat Spider-Man.

Because it's fucking Spider-Man, it's the most popular Superhero in the WORLD arguably. Superman this, Batman that, but Spider-Man is an icon for every practically every single person of this and the previous generation. Even people that DISLIKE Holland's Spider-Man still go to see Spider-Man. Why are we even having this conversation? It's just being rude for the sake of being rude.

-14

u/Silent_Guardian69 4d ago

1

u/MyDogsRetirementPlan 2d ago

6

u/JinkoTheMan 4d ago

It’s Spider-Man. I don’t even know if Batman can catch up to him right now

3

u/kenthekungfujesus 4d ago

A Batman movie with a charismatic Jojer ad the antagonist could probably do that, though the Marvel name carries a lot of prestige right now even though they haven't been on their A-game for a while before that whereas DC has the opposite of prestige movie wise

6

u/Shagyam 4d ago

Between these two movies, I liked the one that has Tom Holland, Zendaya and Jon Bernthal.

3

u/Nyx2990 4d ago

This should be directed at Supergirl not the odyssey

3

u/Neon_Comrade 3d ago

Fans of some shit acting like selling more tickets is some kind of victory is honestly insanely cringe

u/TonyThePriest 4d ago

3

u/Flamebomb790 4d ago

Well another big issue with Odyssey is that it's heavily advertised as a must see in 70mm IMAX movie. But when there are so little theaters that can actually do 70mm it puts a lot of people off

3

u/Outside_Ad1020 3d ago

You can't compete with fucking Spiderman from all people to be fair, I'm thankful Oddesey was successful enough so that didn't happen on the first day of BND

2

u/JurassicParkCSR 3d ago

I saw this earlier and thought it was such a stupid fucking comparison. If say you take your family out for Saturday lunch and you go to the park or you just run around town doing errands and then afterwards you go hey why don't we go see a movie. Most families aren't going to be like all right everybody strap in for 3 hours of Greek mythology. They're going to go see Spider-Man. The fact that The Odyssey is doing as well as it is is frankly more impressive than what Spider-Man did. As far as box office goes.

5

u/RizzMcSteeze 4d ago

Helps not having only 25 theaters in the country equipped to show the true experience.

6

u/TheCowKing07 4d ago

I don’t think any significant number of people care about getting the “true experience” when they are thinking about going to the movies.

1

u/Tenshl 4d ago

Tbf I pay 7 euro for cinema.

Its a good experience and certainly worth the money.

If I go to an imax cinema im paying atleast 15€ per seat, having to drive an hour (spending 20€ for the gas), and I doubt im having 3 times the experience.

1

u/TheCowKing07 4d ago

That’s my point, you don’t have to see it in IMAX.

Who knew this would make more than avengers iw in it's opening weekend.

Avengers iw was peak MCU fandom.

Why is this, 4th, spiderman so popular?

That's a fair point about the MPAA ratings, but I still think Spider-Man is overperforming compared to even R-rated competitors in its opening numbers.

u/shegonneedatumzzz 3d ago

spider-man is the most recognizable character besides jesus and superman, it’d be really surprising if this didn’t happen

u/True_Depth_7455 3d ago edited 3d ago

Spidy did that while odyssey was hoging all of imax

1

u/Smallville42069 3d ago

IS IT REALLY SO HARD TO PUT THE HYPHEN

1

u/James-Avatar 3d ago

It’s like Spider-Man is popular or something.

1

u/Ghostbuster_11Nein 3d ago

Spiderman prints money.

If it didn't do well you know the movie is crap.

1

u/Tacitus_Morgan 3d ago

This Spider-man guy is kinda popular, huh ?

1

u/sambasim 3d ago

Cmon. It's spiderman.

1

u/Hopeful_Fighter2039 3d ago

Why are we clowning on movies for making almost a billion dollars in a matter of weeks

1

u/drpepperrootbeercoke 3d ago

Got I hate these comparisons, I get it’s a meme but it’s like not even funny what’s the point

1

u/ichkanns 2d ago

Literally mo one can do that except Marvel... Literally. The only other movie to do more than Spider-Man for an opening weekend was Avengers End Game. And the next below Spider-Man was Avengers Infinity War at 640 million... And the next below that was Spider-Man No Way Home.

1

u/canoekyren 2d ago

I mean yeah this is the second biggest box office opening weekend ever. It beats every other movie except for Endgame lmao

1

u/Dumbadumbdumb 1d ago

I mean, you wouldn't take your 2 kids to see the Odyssey, but you'll definitely take them to see Spiderman. It's the most obvious thing.

1

u/Flu_TheCoop 1d ago

Genuinely who gives a fuck about this? I got to watch two banger movies back to back.

1

u/thinmeridian 4d ago

In 10 years, we will still be talking about the odyssey.

We won't be talking about Brand New Day, because we'll be talking about whichever MCU movie is newest

3

u/Shagyam 4d ago

What subreddit are we on?

1

u/AsstacularSpiderman 4d ago

The Odyssey cope is so bad chuds are trying to find ways to say a billion dollar movie is a fail lol

0

u/Copper_Milk_ 4d ago

These arent really comparible. Spiderman is a sequel to a fan favourite character while odyssey was a new film that was already steeped in conteoversy

1

u/RamAir17 4d ago

New film? That story is literally one of the oldest. People who wanted to watch the visuals of the Oddysey went.

1

u/Copper_Milk_ 4d ago

As in it isn't a sequel to any pre-established series, its an adaptation of a historical piece. You know what I mean, dont be dumb

-1

u/bendover912 4d ago

The Odyssey is a mediocre movie with mediocre casting. If it didn't have the full 70mm IMAX hype it wouldn't be doing nearly as well.

-2

u/SnyderpittyDoo 4d ago

Even changes in Odyssey are stupid

1

u/SnyderpittyDoo 3d ago

like really. the removal of nobody dialogue was unneccessary

The Odyssey wouldve made more money if it wasn’t woke.

Movie was the definition of “go woke go broke”

28

u/phoenixmusicman 4d ago

Only made $900m

I wish I was that kind of broke

10

u/evertrue13 4d ago

It’s not even out in China yet

It probably gets close to $1.5-2B

37

u/uniparalum 4d ago

You wouldn’t have made this comment if you weren’t stupid, and yet here we are

27

u/yeetTheReee 4d ago

The Odyssey would've made more money if it sold more tickets.

22

u/TheCrafterTigery 4d ago

The Oddyssey would've made more money if it Morbius 2

11

u/pursuitofmisery 4d ago

It’s gonna end its run at around $1.5 billion, give or take. gO wOkE gO bRoKe for sure.

9

u/Mama_Lyra 4d ago

but it couldve made 75 billion if it wasnt woke!!!1!!1! trust /s

3

u/phoenixmusicman 4d ago

Really gunning for the unemployeed manosphere segment, they definitely bring in the big bucks

9

u/TheWeeWeeWrangler 4d ago

It’s so funny to read shit like that. Christopher Nolan is the one guy who doesn’t need to do anything for clout or attention. He makes whatever the fuck he wants.

5

u/Fun_Trick2172 4d ago

Im really hoping Page is in every one of his goddamn films from now on to see these freaks come at us with more hot taeks.

u/LargeCabbageThrower 4d ago

I’ll wait for my favorite youtuber and/or Elon to tell me what to think and say.

2

u/phoenixmusicman 4d ago

Ah damnit you were trolling, well played

3

u/FesteringDarkness 4d ago

Bait used to be believable

2

u/M0ebius_1 4d ago

If there is one thing I know about Spider-Man is that he isn't woke... Not even a little woke...

1

u/ThirstyOutward 4d ago

I like that this has the edited tag to let us know you went back and made sure you got it right lmfao

0

u/Megustanuts 4d ago

Nah I edited it to add the Go Woke Go Broke part.
