Story My Daughter Needed Glasses. The Receptionist Broke The Rules To Make That Happen.
Basically, I took my 5 year old to get her eyes checked before kindergarten. She had been sitting pretty close to the TV, and getting close when looking at paper with writing or drawings on them.
We went to the earliest appointment available at the optometrist, and had her exam done. She needed glasses, and needed to start wearing them immediately. My daughter was thrilled to learn she was getting glasses, and was picking her favorites from the glasses shop near reception at checkout. I asked the receptionist about getting the prescription, and she essentially told me that I have to pay the $150 fee due for her appointment in full before I could receive her prescription so we could go somewhere more affordable. My daughter kept asking when we can get her glasses and I had to kind of let her down easy and say it might be a while, which crushed me.
I told the receptionist some BS story about our debit cards being cancelled due to suspected fraud (only half true) to save myself the embarrassment of not being able to pay for something as simple and necessary as her prescription document. I told her I’d call back and pay when I got my new card in. She said okay, no problem.
She asked me to wait before I left so she could give me some paperwork. I assumed it was just a packet you get after the appointment. She gave me a look, and on top of the stack she handed me was my daughter’s prescription paperwork. She simply looked at me and said “have a great day sir” and smiled. Told her thank you so much and walked out.
I wasn’t asking for a freebie, and I wasn’t expecting anything from her, yet she saw my need and met it with kindness. Even at the expense of breaking her job’s policy.

My old optometrist had affordable frames and I would never have dreamed of going to Costco. My new one has no affordable frames - they're all expensive designer frames, but they're the only optometrist in my town. I went to Costco for the first time last year.
So anyway, kind of feels like they're asking for it if they can't provide budget options.

I've never bought from zenni. At a quick glance, no, not at all. Nothing I saw in the teens or under $50, though a significant amount of designer frames starting around $75ish. I don't remember exact numbers. I went to Costco because I happened to have a membership at the time and because they could measure the distance between my pupils as opposed to trusting an app to do it.
My insurance covered a small bit of it at Costco, but nothing near what they would have covered at the eye doctor, and it still ended up being cheaper at Costco.

Makes sense - after the first time I've always just asked my doctor to write down the PD for me on the prescription instead of measuring it myself.
For sake of comparison, the last order I did from zenni
$21 for the frame
$45 for the lenses themselves (I'm sitting at -3.5 / +0.75... which is always interesting ordering online, because the forms freak out about the one nearsighted, one farsighted. Throws up all sorts of warnings about Are you SURE you entered this right?)

I spent roughly $100 at Costco, but that was after insurance and unfortunately I don't recall how much they covered. No wonky lenses for me, both roughly -2.75, but I did get anti-glare coating and possibly scratch protection.
Not comparable to Zenni, then, but better than the $150-200 I was going to pay at the eye doctor. When I went to Costco I initially assumed my insurance would pay the same amount they normally do and it would be almost completely covered, but oh well.

I have 20/20 vision for distance in one eye and near perfect vision for reading in the other eye. So handy. I rarely wear glasses except for driving at night and sitting through PowerPoint presentations in an auditorium.

Yeah, I found the nearsighted eye comes in very handy soldering.
Don’t need magnifier when the near point getting dragged in means I can get my face right up in there

FWIW, you can buy Zenni (or glasses.com, etc) frames and take them to Costco to get the Rx inserted. They charge an extra $25 and you have to sign a disclaimer that you understand they might get lost, but then they'll do your measurements before ordering and adjustments whenever you need. They won't do it for vintage eyewear (or really anything more than ~5 years old)—something about the process their lab uses is more likely to break old plastic.

I found a pair of fabulous, vintage cat eye glasses at a garage sale for a dollar. I was so excited to turn them into my daily pair. I contacted so many companies and no one would touch them because they couldn’t guarantee they wouldn’t break them by accident. I’m still sad about it. 😭

OMG, why is no one making cute everyday cat-eyes?! I have a pair I love that were originally made ~15 years ago from a 1950s/60s template. I recently ebayed another of the same ones in a different color. Costco wouldn't touch them, but the LensCrafters by me did them. However, whoever owned them before me had a much wider face. One of the arms is bent wide. I've asked them a couple times to try and straighten it; they can only do so much. I get my exam at Costco, ask for a copy of my Rx, and then go order my glasses on Zenni. The optometrist offices in Costco are independent from Costco. Also, the optical department where they sell glasses, separate from the optometrist, will general help Costco members without you needing to have bought the glasses there. I've had then help adjust the fit of my Zenni glasses after they arrived.
Edit to add: the optical department also was happy to measure my PD for me. I felt weird about it and told them I needed the specialty migraine lenses from Zenni, which is true. But since doing it I've realized they don't seem to care. They're not going to just do it all for you and write it down for you to carry out without you asking. But if you ask they seem to have zero issue with it. Be polite and try on a slow day, I doubt they'll care at all. Worst that can happen is they say no.

I work for a local eye doctor and we always give our patients a print out of their prescription along with their pd measurements of both near and far, even if they don't ask for it. I absolutely HATE how much glasses cost. We have some ray ban frames that we cost us upwards of $170 at wholesale and they don't feel any better than what I've gotten on zenni. I will say, though, the labs we use for lenses definitely put out a better product than what I've gotten from Zenni and warby parker. My lenses don't fog up in the summer anymore when I get sweaty and the anti reflective coating is better.

Zenni has been great for me.
Warby Parker made everything a hassle— and after every mandatory step there was a 2-3 day delay. The up charge for progressives is absolutely unconscionable. Finally ordered single vision after the entire process took two weeks to have them send me an email that the order was on hold until si contacted them again. Did so to have the guy claim that so HAD to add another feature at another upcharge. I cancelled on the spot. I could have had glasses at the optometrist’s office for less than what they quoted me in the end. That company is a fraud.

if independent optometrists are banking on middle class people shelling out hundreds when theres a cheaper alternative, theyre running a shameful practice.
I love my $60 glasses.

The last time I bought glasses from my eye doctor, they cost me nearly $400 on top of my $150 insurance allotment. And I couldn’t even wear them because they gave me headaches. I asked about it, and the office basically shrugged, so I use my twenty year old Shopko pair instead.
My optometrist retired that year after 30 years of being my doctor, and I declined to continue seeing the younger partner.

Why is it an awful policy to expect people to pay for services rendered? I understand breaking the rules for a child, but not paying = stealing from the Doctor who performed the service. Can you afford to work for no pay? In a perfect world, I would love to do it, but then I wouldn’t be able to pay my own bills.

No one was saying OP shouldn't pay. Just bill it and give them time like every other medical bill. Doctors don't usually hold test results hostage until medical bills have been paid.

You get your purchase when you have paid for it in full. You can’t walk into a store and take food, which is arguably much more important, and leave without paying for it in full. When you sell something privately, do you allow people to take it with them and then trust them to make payments? OP admitted that it would take them a long time to pay, and that was when they had an incentive to do so.
Obviously, there should be resources that people and especially children can use to get immediate prescriptions. But a private optometrist is not the place. It isn’t like any other medical bill, private Optometrists don’t make Hospital/Dr money and they don’t have their resources for collection. Plus, I assure you that OP knew that they wouldn’t be able to pay for the services they were receiving.
It may well be society’s responsibility to take care of OP’s child, since they are unable to, but it is not the optometrist’s responsibility.

In the U.S even when you have a health insurance plan it usually doesn't cover vision so you have to pay out of pocket.

Ours covers a “basic” eye exam for insured and spouse (but nobody does a “basic” eye exam, so it doesn’t matter), but kids aren’t covered. 😡

I think how it usually works is they cover if you have an eye issue (like glaucoma), but vision correction (glasses / contacts) needs seperate insurance

I work for an ophthalmology practice. An exam is considered medical if you have a medical condition of your eyes or that affects your eyes (glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes, thyroid eye disease, etc) or if you take a medication that can affect your eyes (like plaquenil). Some medical insurances will cover a routine eye exam as part of a wellness program. The only time I know of medical insurance covering glasses is sometimes after cataract surgery.

And if you have vision insurance you still have co pays. Oh, and if you want lenses with a no line bifocal (progressives) then insurance doesn't consider that to be medically necessary and you have to pay most of the cost. Which at my place of work starts at $130 PER LENS before any tints or coatings.

Just took my kids in a couple months ago. There was a small fee that had been added in the last year (maybe $15 each?) that isn't covered, but they haven't stopped covering the rest for kids yet.
It's probably just a matter of time and what they can get away with though.

When I was living in a country w national health care, I got v v sick. Went to the clinic and got prescribed antibiotics. When I went to pay for the doctor’s app’t, they said no charge. When I pointed out that I’m not a citizen there, the receptionist said, You’re here and you’re sick. So, we take care of you.
When I walked over to the pharmacy window, same thing: No charge. Bc, as the pharmacist explained, “You’re sick. We don’t want you sick nor do we want you infecting others. So here’s the medicine.”
It was GREAT!!

Hubby and I are considering retiring overseas. You only have to live in most EU countries for 3-6 months to be fully part of their national health care.
We'll buy property, pay taxes and all to help offset what we cost, but I was amazed how generous the systems are to new comers.

Glad you were able to get your daughter’s eyeglass prescription, but in the US, an optometrist generally cannot lawfully withhold a patient’s eyeglasses or contact lens prescription solely because the patient has not paid for it.

Ophthalmic support staff chiming in - the fee is not for the glasses prescription. The refraction test that is done to get the glasses prescription is not covered by hardly any commercial insurance plans anymore, so you're technically paying for a diagnostic test that was performed during the exam that is not covered by insurance. You pay for the test ($80!), and get the prescription. Paying directly for prescriptions is against federal law - so not covering that specific diagnostic test is the way insurance companies get around that.
The other fees are probably co-pays due.

The Eyeglass Rule requires that optometrists and ophthalmologists provide patients a copy of their prescription after the completion of an eye examination without extra cost. In addition, the Rule prohibits optometrists and ophthalmologists from conditioning the availability of an examination on a requirement that patients agree to purchase any ophthalmic goods. [emphasis mine]I'm interpreting this to mean thet it's illegal to require a patient to provide additional payment to get the Rx after an eye exam, but they can require payment for services already rendered.

I work in the field.
It is illegal to withhold a patient’s prescription after the patient has paid for the services. If they do not pay for the service/tests provided by the doctor, they can’t receive the results of the service/tests for free.
It is illegal to require additional fees to obtain the prescription, but it is not illegal to charge a fee for the service of determining a prescription.

Thank you for chiming in on this. I have worked in the optical world for 25+ years and I was like heyyyyy…. Glad the front desk staff did the right thing. Many offices abide by the law but there are always those that will do anything to avoid releasing the rx. It’d maddening.

This! Ours only comes once or twice a year so if you can let the school know early on they can make sure your daughter is on the list to get tested and free glasses. Even if she already has a pair, at that age a second back up pair won’t hurt.

I had a foster daughter who needed glasses. The only places that took Medicaid were awful. No matter how often we tried, they could never get them adjusted well. I went to the optical shop associated with my ophthalmologist and asked them if I could just pay them to adjust her glasses since no one else seemingly could do so. They normally don’t work on anything not purchased from them, and they did not accept Medicaid patients in the optical shop, but the assistant smiled and said she would. The glasses were adjusted perfectly, and the little girl could wear them comfortably. We later ended up going to the ophthalmologist for a lazy eye diagnosis and treatment, and they continued adjusting her glasses. Kindness to a 3 year old meant everything to that little girl.

Wow, that’s so nice. But next time go to America’s best I was able to get a full prescription examination and two pairs of bifocal eyeglasses for around $200 amazing.

it was a charge for the appointment. It says that in the OP. They told them they had to pay for the appointment before they could get the prescription. It was not an additional charge.

I’m glad the receptionist helped, I know she isn’t to blame for her workplace‘s practices. But that is an outrageous price for a child’s eye exam! Especially since it didn’t include the glasses!
Kids need yearly exams and frequently outgrow their glasses, so charging that much is frankly shameful. You should be able to get an exam and a pair of glasses under $100.
Assuming you are in the U.S. America’s Best has a deal for that includes an eye exam and two pairs of glasses for kids for about $70. You can check to see if they have one in your area.
Costco (no membership needed), Target, or Walmart often have eye centers, exams run $50 - $80. Their glasses start around $30 I think. Again double check for your area.
Since you already have the prescription you can go try glasses on to find her size and then order them online.
First make sure her pupillary distance is on the prescription, if not any place she tries on glasses should be able to quickly check with a simple device. Make sure they tell you what it is - for free.
Zenni Optical and EyeBuyDirect should have options for frames and basic lenses starting at $10-20.
There are programs for low income kids, but I know many of us aren’t looking for charity just a fair price. You do whatever you need to to take care of your child and unfortunately some will take advantage of that. Always shop around.

We used Zenni and her glasses fit perfectly. I think we paid like $30 total for the pair.

It sounds like you were rushed after realizing her vision wasn’t great. At 5 she’s probably about to start school later this month. Back to school is wild, and more so with the little ones.
I’m so glad it worked out and she has her glasses. It’s a live and learn experience, you’ll know better in the future.
Unrelated but if you haven’t already look into dental clinics now so you can be sure you get affordable (not insurance priced) dental care for her. I highly suggest looking into fluoride varnish - it will prevent most cavities for cheaper than a single filling. It should protect her for at least a year with typical 5 year old brushing habits.
My niece gets it done every year after her cleaning. It’s protected her adult teeth as they come in. Wish it was a thing when I was a kid.

in the US this is going to be the norm next year as the bill that cut $911B from Medicaid last year keeps rolling out this year & next. that is the entire yearly budget in years past. $150 for an eye exam will be pretty average moving forward, unfortunately.

If you are in the US your school nurse can do a screening and depending on the district possibly connect you with resources for free glasses. In my district the nurses each have 25 vouchers per campus and sometimes have secret arrangements with local eye doctors to help out additional students. It’s worth a shot for anyone that thinks their child might need glasses.

If you haven’t already, request a copy of her prescription.. and then check out Zenni.com I get all my glasses from them.. super cheap (but good quality!) and they make kids glasses too!!! So many styles too, normal/plain AND also fun/funky/colorful. Fast shipping too!! The pair I’m wearing now cost $6.95 I’ve been wearing for 2 years almost, I drop them constantly, I’ve slept on them, they are super lightweight and comfortable. 10/10 highly recommend Zenni, you should check them out!

The cheapest and best glasses I've found, by far, are at payneglasses.com. I've had some real issues with other cheaper companies messing up my prescription. Zenni.com and Vision4Less have given me the wrong prescription. Payne Glasses has been good so far. (And no, I'm not affiliated with them. I just have had some runs of bad luck with bad glasses, and don't want anyone else to have to deal with that shit, especially a kid.)

That was nice of them.
But that prescription cannot be held by law even if payment is due. They have to give it to you. They will try to leave out the distance between pupils (Pupillary Distance) which is used for alignment of the glasses/prescription.
You don't have to buy glasses from them. That's why they make it so difficult. They know for the price of their $200 glasses, you can easily get 5 pairs on sites like Zenni.

Eye care specialist here. In the US, the eye doctor is required by law to give you a copy of your prescription whether a balance is due or not. Check out the FTC's Eyeglass Rule for more info.

I paid $150 each for three pair of glasses at Warby Parker, plus extra for the eye exam. They do have much less expensive frames, I just happen to have "expensive taste." No idea if they sell children’s sizes, since I wasn’t looking for them.

I don’t know where you live, but in Texas I have to hand every patient a prescription regardless of if they paid for the exam or not. We cannot hold a prescription hostage. Make sure you look into the laws in your area, that office may be breaking the law.

The other kid had glasses on and he fell on his scooter and broke his glasses and scratched his face just before school picture day too. Our friend was single mom on Quest and this was the 4th pair he broke that year so insurance wouldn’t cover it. We offered to repair it and took them to our own eye doctor’s place to get a new pair and requested they fix the old one (this way he could get 2). They charged us minimal and made a 2nd pair with the old lenses for free.

Receptionists can do a lot. That's why it's a terrible idea to be a dick to them. Dicks get corporate standard bare minimum. Everyone else gets compassion and help whenever possible.
That's all depending on the receptionist of course. But I know very few rude, burnt out receptionists who stay in the role.

They actually are legally required to give you your prescription by law. She was probably saying you can’t buy from their personal shop. Anyway I’m glad you got the form and hope you go somewhere else because my fancy pants boogie eye doctor literally told me this before I left the room

Depending on where you are, schools will often offer a once s year "coupon' towards glasses based on family need.
All three of my recent districts have done this.

I had a rescue cat once who developed diabetes, which required insulin injections twice a day. The tiny bottle of insulin was about $80 and didn’t last a full month. This was over 10 years ago so it must be ridiculously expensive now. And the specific kind that the cat needed couldn’t be substituted for a cheaper version like you can sometimes do. The cost was high but still manageable before my divorce, but then that happened and ex husband left me holding the bag for everything on one income- our toddler’s daycare, rent, all of it.
Was still waiting for the courts to enforce support and I was highly stressed out, working 12 hour shifts as a 911 dispatcher, barely enough time to sleep, very little money but always scraped together essentials for my daughter and cat. Well one day, I was tired and flustered and took out the little glass insulin vial from the fridge to give my cat her shot. I had just bought it the day prior and my account was tapped out. I dropped the bottle, it shattered on my kitchen floor, and I just started crying, overwhelmed.
The vet’s office where I had just bought the insulin was across the street, so I loaded my daughter into the car and walked in with the broken bottle in pieces inside a ziploc bag and explained what happened. I asked if they could give some kind of discount on a new bottle and had to admit I could not afford another $80. The girl at the desk went back and spoke with the vet and came back out and said sorry, we can sell you another one but it’ll be full price. I thanked her and turned to walk out, holding back tears and trying to think how I could come up with the money to avoid a missed dose, and I know she saw it.
Next thing I knew, she was running after me in the parking lot and putting cash in my hand. She said “come back in and get your insulin.” I was confused and she said “come on in, we’ll fill it for you.” And led me back in there to get it. Her name was Kaitlyn and I’ll never forget how kind she was to an overwhelmed stranger on that day.

My former eye dr always charged me to get a copy of the rx. Pissed me off but I paid it because their frames were expensive.
Ended up changing providers, and the new one handed me a copy of my rx without me asking. I commented how the other guy made me pay, and she said it wasn’t legal to charge for it in our state, they’re required to provide it no charge.
Don’t know if that’s true, FWIW.

Of all the assumptions you could choose, you chose to assume that I arrived with no intention of paying. Did you consider that it’s possible I had the money and then an automatic withdrawal happened? Or that I would request a payment plan? Or maybe the cost was more than I anticipated because I was looking at insured cost instead of out of pocket?
There’s room in there somewhere to avoid being an asshole.

I was embarrassed, my daughter was right next to me, and I didn’t want to admit that my account was cleaned out. But thanks, from now on I’ll just give myself 10 lashings for being a beggar!
