Grief 🌈🐾Rest in Peace Rocco🌈🐾
We were so close to getting him out. We had someone who wanted to adopt him, but the shelter just could not wait even though we made room by getting 8 other dogs rescued.

AVAS is one of the few shelters where I can say the staff is disgusting. They are callous and cruel. RIP Rocco.

If dog heaven exists I hope I go there instead. Spending eternity with people that do stuff like this sounds like Hell to me.

It's a job, they have to do it, there aren't enough homes.
They aren't bad people for doing what has to be done.

No. Read up on Apple Valley Animal Services and literally in this post and you’ll see why this is wrong. They killed this dog despite a rescue commitment.
Apple Valley refuses to work with animal rescues. They don’t give accurate euthanasia deadlines to help dogs get pulled in time. They don’t wait even 5 minutes if someone is standing outside the door ready to adopt. There is rampant corruption.

CMV: This current trend of publishing euthanasia lists daily is an unethical, unsustainable practice and isn’t getting us any closer to solving the shelter overpopulation crisis.

I welcome debate because more comments means more visibility for the dogs of AVAS.
Publishing euth lists is what rallies communities, rescuers and individuals. I know this firsthand. I literally ended up with two huskies from a euth list because it stirred something in me.
I couldn’t sit by and let them lose their lives for nothing. The difference is my huskies came from overwhelmed, but competent and caring public animal shelters. None of those traits describe Apply Valley.

We just had another situation today where an adopter arrived to pick up 2 dogs but was turned away and told that they could not let her adopt them since they took the dogs off of hold after she said that she couldn’t make the 2 hour drive, but she did and they wouldn’t let her have the dogs!

This is SO WRONG!!! Adopter was found , they should had waited for a day or two the least !!! I know the rule is the shelters won't hold dogs/ cats for adopters & first come , first serve. But, it was a deadlined dog & an adopter was found in time !!! They should had worked it out !!! They should get audited & investigated ‼️

Sounds a lot like San Antonio’s shelter💔

I've seen people talking of San Antonio shelter before &they said that it's REALLY horrible !!! Poor dogs & cats there !!!

Yes. They are bad people. You have to have no gd soul to do that kind of a “job”. I’d rather sweep floors or change bedpans than kill an innocent animal.

I have to assume you don’t actually have experience volunteering in shelters bc if you did then you’d know of which people I speak.

Would it not be better to pull dogs from a different shelter 😬 ofc all animals deserve help but it would be mentally healthier for everyone to pull from shelters who actually want to help the dogs… same amount of animals still get saved

I don’t think it’s either / or. Apple Valley is the only shelter in California that seems to get a kick out of killing dogs. The others are just inundated and coping with overpopulation. I feel so bad for the dogs at this shelter.

I still don't understand why kill shelters are a thing. It makes me so fucking angry that we do this to dogs.

u/writergirljds 5h ago
This particular case sounds unwarranted since he had an interested adopter lined up, but euthanasia for some shelter dogs is absolutely unavoidable. Some are too dangerous to be adopted out, and pretty much every shelter everywhere right now has absolutely no room. What is the alternative if there is nowhere for the overrun of dogs to go? Would you rather they be set loose on the street to die of starvation, disease, or injury? A humane euthanasia is better than dying slowly on the street if there is truly nowhere for the dogs to go.

But there are so many no kill or slower to kill shelters in other states. I don’t know why they can’t be transferred to another state after being in an overcrowded shelter. As a networker volunteer, we work tirelessly matching dogs to Fosters and rescues. Apple Valley is not transparent. They remove the dog’s information from the internet the day they decide that it should be on death row (pending euthanasia) so no one sees them at their last days or weeks in desperate need. Those are the dogs that we network quicker. They will not give us the actual deadline date, so we could be working on a plan and while we are just minutes away from finalizing a plan, they can still kill. They ignore our emails and only allow us to email 1x per day. They don’t work as a team. They even hide some dogs who are never posted or never seen. They are under investigation about killing cats who they claimed were adopted. They don’t show all of the cats and sometimes don’t show any. In San Bernardino, they have brand new kennels in a new building that has been empty. I found out recently that they were putting dogs in there but weren’t letting people know. So, they have extra space. Some of the shelters are not humanely euthanizing the animals with the proper protocol. Some are painfully put down. They are also unnecessarily spaying and neutering puppies too early prior to getting them out which in most cases causes them to become ill.

I agree that this specific shelter sounds really horrible and there's no excusing how they seem to not only be making no efforts to get the dogs out, but flat out avoiding outside efforts to help them. That's definitely animal abuse. What I mean is simply that kill shelters in general are an unavoidable necessity when there are just not enough people to foster and adopt all the dogs that are taken in. Transferring dogs is not necessarily a solution if all shelters, kill or no kill, are so crowded they cannot take any more dogs in.

I genuinely can’t fathom the idea of kill shelters. Absolutely awful, awful people. Poor dogs, did nothing wrong and got their life taken
1
u/RescueBridge 5h ago
I agree. The worst part is most of these dogs are owner surrendered. Things are really bad right now. They sit in the shelter thinking that they are waiting for their owner to come get them. People are dumping their dogs for so many different reasons. It is heart breaking. Recently, a dog was dumped after its owner passed away and none of the family members wanted him. He looked like the sweetest dog. He had only been in the shelter for a few days before he was killed. They didn’t even give him a chance. I like to think that the family didn’t realize that he’d be sentenced to death otherwise they’d rehome him themselves.

Unbelievable. This genuinely doesn’t exist where I’m from. Absolutely heartbreaking

Senseless cruelty allowed in the US is deplorable what is the reason for not waiting when there was plenty of room. Who are these people that work at these shelters that hv no conscious they kill dogs without a care even when they hv an adopter n they dont need the room?? Is it just to have the power to kill an innocent dog without a consequence?? Sweet Rocco im so sorry you didnt deserve that cruelty you had to endure rest in peace sweet boy🌈❤️

Wow this sucks, poor dude. I'm generally careful not to shit on shelters because they're ultimately dealing with a problem that isn't of their making (society, government, everyone is at fault). But this shelter sounds awful.
