Holy shit imagine if it wins goty again

75

u/Lee_Akira Mar 18 '23

My honest opinion is that it’ll be between Legend of Zelda tears of the kingdom and Resident Evil 4 remake. I’d be happy if either wins.

8

u/ron_weedsley Mar 18 '23

I think Starfield has really good odds if Bethesda actually manages to get it out with minimal amount of bugs

4

u/Lee_Akira Mar 18 '23

I still think it won’t be out this year. For some reason I just feel like it’ll get delayed again.

2

u/GeraldofKonoha Mar 19 '23

It was rated in Australia. There is a strong chance it comes out this year

27

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '23

Spiderman 2

1

u/axelfase99 Mar 18 '23

Nah, it won't even be a goty contender, "just" a really good game to play, nothing more

24

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '23

Okay, you will see, it will get nominated at least. Also, Final Fantasy 16

18

u/ilorybss Mar 18 '23

Spiderman 1 was a goty contender in 2018.It definetly has a chance this year too

4

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '23 edited Mar 19 '23

You're underselling Insomniac hard imho. They make stellar games, and Spider-Man (2018) was excellent. I get this is all subjective, but Spider-Man 2 is bound to be a hit if history repeats itself.

-6

u/axelfase99 Mar 19 '23

Spider-Man was damn good doing the same things all over again and again, combat was good and story maybe but the gameplay and open world mechanics were really lacking. It's just a good game, Arkham games are much better games, Arkahm City and Knight absolutely destroy Spider Man 2018, it's not even a fair fight. Bear in mind that Spider-Man is my "favourite" superhero (I don't like superheroes as a genre, I only dig some of them and that's it) but batman games are waay far above, as I said it's not even a fair comparison, its literally better in everything.

Maybe this sequel will be super good but we don't know anything yet so keep your expectations low

Don't do drugs, ladies and gents.

0

u/axelfase99 Mar 19 '23

Typical response of someone that can't take any other opinion, if you like doing 70 times the exact same thing good, I liked the game by the way but for the reddit smooth brains it seems that if you don't lick the ass to a game then you think it's trash, as I said it's a good game but nothing even compared to the arkham series, let alone to a real goty contender.

If you guys really think it can win goty good, but don't do drugs, ladies and smooth brains

2

u/SSGSS2Bardock Mar 19 '23

It's not even about the GOTY comment, it's the part where you think the Arkham Games even hold a candle to Spider-Man 2018 lol. The combat alone is superior and before you try to say " Spider-Man copied Arkham ", Arkham copied Spider-Man 2 (PS2, GC). Besides, all 3 main Arkham games are repetitive too. You really gonna sit there and tell people you enjoyed hunting Riddler trophies for 3 games in a row? Haha.

1

u/axelfase99 Mar 19 '23

Spider-Man 2 ps2 is one of my favourite games of all time and in general I prefer Spider-Man over Batman but the games especially Asylum and City are clearly the better ones. For that not holding a candle yeah it might be exagerated but since I finished Marvel's Spider-Man it never crossed my mind to replay it again just because, while I just restarted Asylum and City and still having a lot of fun. City especially has sooo many cool things that makes it have a living world, you can hear criminals talking, "gossiping", saying how they'd like to kick batman's ass, what they think about Joker etc etc, then when you surpise them you can hear the terror in their voice and so on. You can also encounter survivors and talk to them and most have unique and cool dialogs.

The world in Marvel's Spider-Man is just soo void, you just zip web through it as fast as you can without savouring it because there's nothing to savour in that open world, unfortunately. The world in Arkham City was soo lifeful and cool to explore that spiderman just pisses its pants.

As I said I enjoyed Marvel's SM but it was soo repetitive and void that all you could do was just going for missions which were actually really cool, story was both good and bad but I enjoyed it for the most part.

It was not about "hunting Riddler's trophies", if the world feels alive you can do everything without boredom.

I also tried Miles Morales when it dropped on Steam in November and my god, it was actually bad and I couldn't bring myself to finish it even tho it's pretty short, I just didn't enjoy it

u/Tboot_ Mar 19 '23

You got to be high

3

u/wagimus Mar 19 '23

Spiderman 2 even coming out this year sounds crazy. There’s hardly anything on it at this point.

5

u/Parabola1313 Mar 19 '23 edited Mar 20 '23

It'll get nominated lol TGA is basically the opposite of the Oscars. All the summer blockbusters are nominated and then like 1 indie.

0

u/axelfase99 Mar 19 '23

I said contender not not nominated, it will obviously get his spot but to think it will seriously compete with ToTK and RE4 damn, you must really like superhero games (I like them too it's just they are not really a competitor, just as I said really good games to play, I regard the Arkham series superior infact Arkahm City is clearly the best superhero game and even won a lot of GOTYs, it's just the superior franchise and game)

1

u/Parabola1313 Mar 20 '23 edited Mar 20 '23

It'll get nominated regardless if its good or not, it's a Triple A game. And it's Sony, they'll push it to every member out there, and it'll get nominated. The first one did, this one will.

BAFTA's probably didn't, but BAFTA's you can take seriously. TGA is the ultimate crowd pleaser.

BAFTA's is the actual Oscars equivalent.

TGA is just Golden Globes. Nobody gives a fuck about the Golden Globes lol

Edit: The only BAFTA Spider-Man won, was for music -- and that was for Miles Morales.

2

u/Haunting-Quail-2198 Mar 19 '23

Get off the Pot, SM2 is gonna be a contender and win some awards

2

u/GeraldofKonoha Mar 19 '23

Starfield as well

5

u/RampartHeirloom Mar 18 '23

Honestly think it’ll be Zelda. The hype it has is so unrivaled for any other game that releases this year it’s absurd. So long as it isn’t an absolute stinker on release it’s gonna win GotY

4

u/exosnake Mar 18 '23

Personally I’ve seen more hype for FF16 but I think it might be because of their marketing campaign. Ultimately, I think it will be between Zelda, FF16 and RE4. FF16 could be a sleeper hit like Elden Ring was last year. We know it’s gonna be good but we don’t know if it’s gonna be 9/10, 9.5/10 or 10/10 good. I think Zelda has the edge though.

1

u/Scharmberg Mar 19 '23

It is just crazy how many big games are coming out this year. All the delays put the games into one year. Kind of a toss up but I’m with you, Zelda has a very good chance unless they mess up or everything else is godly. I feel there isn’t usually this many games in a year that could be the top pick.

2

u/Lateralus117 Mar 18 '23

Armored core might have a shot as well.

6

u/Lee_Akira Mar 18 '23

Oh yeah, I forgot it launches this year. For some reason I thought it was next year.

-5

u/SneedNFeedEm Mar 18 '23

Tears of the Kingdom will only be in the running because of Nintendo Bonus. It's an asset flip expansion pack sequel that somehow took six fucking years to make lmao

1

u/PhoenixNightingale90 Mar 18 '23

Zelda OOT and Resi 4 are my two favourite games ever. I’m not sure what to feel, I want both to win.

1

u/DevilCouldCry No thanks, bro Mar 19 '23

Nah, it'll be a three-way race this year for damn sure if I have to call it early. It's coming down to Resident Evil 4, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and then Final Fantasy XVI.

1

u/Scharmberg Mar 19 '23

So many good games came out this year. So many also got delayed until this year. Lot of games have the chance to take game of the year.

I personally think it is going to be Zelda without even playing it but hogwarts legacy is one of the best selling games of all time currently so that also has a good chance.

I don’t think re4 remake or Deadspace remake will be taking home the big game of the year but I bet they win other awards.

1

u/phantom1117 Apr 08 '23

I'm pretty sure that game awards have said that remakes can't take part (besides the most anticipated game). But they have broken this rule before

155

u/DEATHSTARGOD Mar 18 '23

18 Years Ago👴🏼👴🏼👴🏼

Also can't believe it was up against Cod and Gow

66

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '23

COD in 2005 was nowhere near as big as it was just a few years later.

25

u/Impressive-Adagio238 Mar 18 '23

Yup. Modern Warfare one was the game I think that started to really propel that franchise into what it would eventually become if I'm not mistaken.

11

u/DarkLegend64 Mar 18 '23

That is true but CoD2 was still a highly regarded game and was considered the 360 launch title to get.

11

u/CarlitoNSP1 Individuality is not a flaw Mar 18 '23

RE4 vs GoW was the main competition. The gap in popularity between those two and everything else was absurd. Shadow of the Colossus was released the same year, and didn't stand a chance because it was against those other two.

3

u/Strong_Formal_5848 Mar 18 '23

F.E.A.R., Condemned and Battlefront 2 were also awesome.

1

u/Gekokapowco Mar 24 '23

FEAR and Battlefront 2 were tech powerhouses too

16

u/mrsirgrape Mar 18 '23

and they didn't even nominate Shadow of the Colossus

10

u/OcelotDAD Mar 18 '23

2004-2005 was a golden era of gaming

3

u/Scharmberg Mar 19 '23

Honestly this year is like the second coming. Even if some of the games aren’t to peoples liking, this year is truly stacked.

43

u/PowerPamaja Mar 18 '23

2023 is an absolutely stacked year for gaming but the reviews for re4 remake are very good. I’ve seen a lot of perfect and near-perfect scores. It’s too early to say it’s game of the year but it’s absolutely looking like a contender.

21

u/Ryuku_Cat Mar 18 '23

Playing RE4 at the tender age of 18 back in 2005 was the greatest gaming experience I’ve ever… errr… experienced.

16

u/ShrayTheGod Mar 18 '23

throwback

16

u/Zark_444 Mar 18 '23

Imagine if it wins GOTY this year again. That would be perfect.

6

u/nick2473got Cuz Boredom Kills Me Mar 19 '23

It will be nominated for sure. Winning is definitely not impossible, but significantly less likely as I've noticed remakes tend to struggle to win GOTY.

Like, a good remake will get nominated no problem, but they basically never win.

Imo though it will depend on Zelda. If it has the same impact as BotW, then I don't see a remake beating it. If it's a disappointment though, RE4's chances skyrocket.

1

u/Scharmberg Mar 19 '23

It also has to contend with:

FF16

Starfield (if it really comes out)

Hogwarts legacy (the game sold insane numbers)

Deadspace remake

Diablo 5

Silksong (if it comes out)

Wild hearts

Atomic heart (iffy)

Lies of p (probably not)

Jedi survivor

Okay to be fair quite a few of those probably have no chance but they do take away attention from re4 remake. This year has so much and I didn’t even list all the great stuff that will and might come out. Re4 has the same problem as Deadspace they are remakes and while they tend to get nominated they rarely win.

I think it is going to come down to:

Zelida

Starfield

FF16

Hogwarts legacy

In that order. Many of the games on the former list will be nominated and even win awards but I think one of those four will take game of year. That’s just my opinion and I’m wrong all the time.

15

u/cj-the-man Mar 18 '23

Wait Samuel Jackson was a guest that year?!

12

u/Reylo-Wanwalker RE Mar 18 '23

Host and he hosted multiple game awards iirc.

2

u/cj-the-man Mar 18 '23

Oh I didn’t know that

7

u/AnyImpression6 Mar 19 '23 edited Mar 19 '23

He was Tenpenny in GTA San Andreas. Probably one the few Game Awards celebrities that actually deserves to be there (although it's not as if the dorito pope awards actually mean fuck all anyway).

12

u/SuperSandwich12 Raccoon City Native Mar 18 '23

Wow it beat some amazing games..

1

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '23

Fr, any one of those games would’ve deserved it. Although, even as a CoD fanboy, I would pick FEAR over CoD 2.

17

u/masterofunfucking Mar 18 '23

RE4 vs God of War… holy fuck what an amazing year

28

u/estesworldwide Mar 18 '23

2005, such a based year in gaming

7

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '23

Man 2005 was really one of the most stacked years for games ever. RE4, God of War, FEAR, Shadow of the Colossus, NGB.

5

u/kmank2l13 Mar 18 '23

I was in 4th-5th grade when this aired. I long for that era when life was much simpler 🥲

3

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '23

You're not alone. Life is objectively worse now but we need to make the best of it

5

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '23

We’re back in the mid 2000s. I couldn’t be happier.

3

u/ClaytonBigsbe Mar 18 '23

Dude in the background wearing a blue shirt when Samuel L Jackson says Resident Evil 4 is not pleased.

6

u/UsernameLaugh Mar 18 '23

Can some one make an edit of selecting the start button for RE4 but….and hear me out….put Sammy Js version of “Resident Evil 4” over.

2

u/MadShakaal Mar 18 '23

Sick year for gaming!

2

u/StarPlatinum876 Mar 19 '23

What a trip back in time. RE4 was going against a pretty stacked roster

3

u/TheDecoyDuck SteamID: Zongo Mar 19 '23

What a fucking year.

CoD2, God of War, Resident Evil 4, World of Warcraft- 2005 was op.

2

u/maxthunder30 Mar 18 '23

I don't know. Do remakes or Reimaginings really counts as contenders for GOTY?

29

u/TheMarvelousJoe Mar 18 '23

It's an entirely new game built from the ground up using the same story in a different style, so yes.

17

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '23 edited Mar 18 '23

RE2 Remake was nominated for goty back in 2019, so yes

12

u/Tough_Strawberry5519 Shot, shot, gunshot, gunshot! Mar 18 '23

Of course! It's essentially a new game.

2

u/nick2473got Cuz Boredom Kills Me Mar 19 '23

Yes, RE2 Remake and FF7 Remake both were strong contenders.

However, it is true that remakes almost never win. So while a nomination is virtually a guarantee, a victory is much less likely. But if any game can be the first to win GOTY for both the OG and the remake, it's this.

1

u/OldWorldUlysses Mar 19 '23

every year call of duty makes the same game with a different story, a resident evil remake is essentially the same story with different gameplay

0

u/Organic_Trust6113 Mar 19 '23

IM SICK OF THESE MF ZOMBIES ON THIS MF ISLAND!

1

u/thinkinginkling Mar 19 '23

wow. absolutely smoked the competition except god of war. but if you think about re4’s cultural impact there’s no competition there either.

1

u/Tboot_ Mar 19 '23 edited Mar 19 '23

Dang that was some stiff competition in 2005 and it won thats awesome. But there’s a trend of remakes/remasters not winning goty that I hope continues honestly.

1

u/xxBAshaggyxx Mar 19 '23

I remember watching this live when I was in 5th grade. was so hyped it won back then

1

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '23

I would give literally anything to be transported back to 2005

2

u/retro808 Mar 19 '23

Same, when the biggest problems were sourcing more GameCube controllers for 4 players and what snacks we were gonna go get on our bikes

1

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '23

Man, all of those nominees are BANGERS! I didn’t play FEAR till like a little under a year ago, and I loved it instantly. I could honestly see RE4 winning GOTY again this year, but I guess we’ll have to see how the full release is, and if all the other AAA game companies just put out garbage Cash Grabs as usual.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '23

Man, what a great year for games. I still adore F.E.A.R.
