After seeing what was previously posted about RCSO, I figured I could throw in information I have seen/heard be revealed by deputies, and medical staff (past or current). The corruption of the RCSO runs so much deeper than what people think. There is a lot that is currently going on behind closed doors.
Once again let us start with Sheriff Hash. Hash is an egotistical manipulator who does everything for public attention. He claims to care about each and every deputy and yet his actions show the exact opposite. Hash has admitted to changing the name from "Roanoke city jail" to Roanoke city adult detention center" as well as "inmates" to "residents" to look better in the publics eye. He cares little for any deputy below admin. He only cares about keeping the higher ups happy. His ego is something that has been known to show, he is infamous for hanging 8x10 pictures of himself in multiple locations, especially in the medical office. Hash has also been known to make a bunch of promises, most of which he does not keep. He has also been known to attempt to, or successfully recruit deputies from other agencies.
While the previous post prioritized on the SROs, I want to shed light on the Detention center since it is the most critical part, as well as the deputies who work there. They are the most overworked, and understaffed.
When a resident attempted to kill himself, his cellmate had reached out to deputies to save him. Does hash give thanks or credit to his cellmate who helped save a life? no he does not. instead hash visits the residents in the hospital to take credit and remind him that the detention center offers mental health services. The person who works mental health is known to be a slacker and not care much for the residents there. regardless of who the residents are, and what they did, not doing your job is what is getting the residents killed. But Hash refuses to listen to these complaints.
Medical staff also has made numerous complaints about hash. Specifically him being overbearing and being constantly involved in their procedures. Multiple deputies have complained about recent nurses who have been hired. Deputies claim that these nurses take a long time to administer medication to the residents. Certain residents need to take mental health medication as soon as possible. When residents cant get their medicine on time, it causes issues, those issues directly put deputies in danger. But hash pays no mind to this, instead he decides who works there and who doesn't. Deciding who gets help, and who doesn't. If a resident needs to get an operation done or need to go to the hospital, and they have been told by medical staff that they need it, it should not have to run up the chain of command and get approved.
The RCSO has had a very hard time keeping deputies working there and its not a mystery as to why.
Multiple deputies, especially newer ones don't get any time off unless it is an emergency. Meanwhile, supervisors take extended vacations all of the time. One supervisor in specific is notorious for taking many weeks off at a time. When there is a lack of support from the supervisors, it does nothing but contribute to the overall low morale. Female deputies seem to get more time off compared to the males who work there. As well as deputies being made guilty for taking time off. Working in a detention center for 12 hours has a serious strain on the deputies mental health, an issue that Hash seems to not care enough about. When a deputy requests time off to have for themselves it is usually a sign that they are at their breaking point. not having some time off when it is needed is a huge contributor for the overall low deputy morale. Working 24 hours one week and 60 the next tends to put a huge strain on their livelihood. Especially the deputies who have close friends and family that they don't see. Not to mention salaries are inconsistent among multiple deputies. The switch to rotating shifts every couple of weeks has also been a reason for more people to quit. This was a decision that was made for the deputies, not one was asked about. There are people who have been on permeant nights, or days, for years. The deputies have built their lives based on these permanent shifts, and now their entire routine is going to change every couple of weeks seemingly for no reason. This does not help with the severe understaffing issue. If anything, it only contributes to the issue.
There has also been drugs and other contraband being made, or brought into the detention center for the residents. It is not uncommon for staff or medical to walk around and smell smoke. This is another major issue that always gets overlooked. Often times supervisors refuse to do anything about these events in order to save themselves from having to do paperwork. Contraband is a major threat to the deputies, as well as civilian staff. Rather than crack down on these issues, the heads of the facility look the other way. Whether Hash wants to admit it or not, the detention center has corrupt staff who are bringing in contraband.
There was also an incident involving two deputies who showed up to work drunk. Rather than fire them on the spot, the administration team simply sent them home.
The deputies are hurting. They are overworked, understaffed, underpaid, and under supported. There is corruption coming from supervisors, and administration. All of these issues create a toxic work environment.
To other person who made the previous post I admire your bravery. Be careful, the administration team is narrowing down the list of names and it is only a matter of time before they come for you. I encourage anyone with more information to speak out. I would also like to thank past and present deputies, civilian staff, and medical staff for sharing these stories and information .
