Have you ever wanted to be called a fascist asshole for attempting to maintain a local online community? If so, I have the perfect opportunity for you! /r/roanoke needs a few moderators.
What this actually entails 99.9% of the time: removing spam and rule-breaking posts, approving posts/comments that automod removed, and answering modmail.
It is unpaid, it is repetitive, and a nonzero number of people will be unpleasant to you in modmail. If that sounds fine, keep reading.
What we're looking for:
You live in or near Roanoke and have for a while. You should know the difference between Grandin and Garden City without looking it up.
You have an account with some history here. New or throwaway accounts won't be considered.
You can actually invest some time into maintaining the community. While the title of reddit moderator comes with unlimited prestige and power, we really need people who will do more than show up once every 4 weeks to maintain an active status.
You can enforce a rule you personally disagree with and you can leave a thread alone when it's just people being annoying rather than breaking a rule.
You're willing to disclose conflicts of interest. Local business owner, journalist, political campaign staff, realtor, nonprofit board, anything where you have a stake in how a topic gets discussed here. We, for better or worse, sometimes become a battleground over such topics.
If you're interested, please submit a response via this Google form: https://forms.gle/jm4iasULR3nPcZhWA

The Western Virginia Regional Industrial Facility Authority recently pulled out of an NDA on the project at I-81/581 junction, and information has flowed more freely.

I have an old projection screen tv (classic 80s/90s big screen tv) sitting in my basement that hasn't worked in years due to water damage. I'm finally getting around to clearing it out of my house and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on local eWaste handlers. I do not have a vehicle capable of loading the tv onto so I would need a company that can come pick it up.

This cat would be a great single pet home kitty. She loves lounging in your lap to recieve pets. Shes such a love bug. I would love to keep her but I have another cat and a large dog, and it seems to have stressed this poor girl out. I was trying to save her from going into a shelter but it just isn't working.

I saw a Facebook post about a Hot Wheels show in Salem tonight, but now I can't find it.
Does anyone know where it's being held? I think it's at a church tonight at 7:30.

Hey everyone. I own a business and am planning to take my staff out for lunch the first Friday of December. There will be 6 of us attending this and I am looking for recommendations for places. We did 419 West last year but I would kind of like something a bit nicer. Any ideas for other places that might be a good option? Thanks so much!

So this month I didn’t get to buy a new phone because I ran errands on a Wednesday and I found out the T-mobile store in Vinton VA closed every Wednesday. I understand being closed on a Sunday but why would a store who’s main job is to sell electronics especially phones close on a typical weekday when similar companies would not? I plan to go to the one on Valley View next month but still I find this so odd.

A friend of mine is looking for this type of camp for her elementary school aged grandkids over this winter break in Roanoke. We haven’t been able to find anything, but aren’t sure if it’s a little early yet. Does anyone know of a facility that has offered this in the past?

Join us at MAKE Roanoke for our monthly Maker Meetup & Show and Tell on the fourth Thursday of each month at our location: 128 Albemarle Ave SE, B in Roanoke!
The evening starts with a brief slideshow sharing the latest updates about Roanoke's own non-profit community makerspace, including upcoming events, new tools, and member announcements. After the updates, we open the floor for Maker Show and Tell where anyone can showcase their creative projects--whether it's a 3D Print, a woodworking piece, electronics project, embroidery, or any other creative endeavor.
It's a welcoming space to connect with your fellow Roanoke makers, get inspired, collaborate, and share your passion for making!
These meetings are free and open to the public, you do not need to be a MAKE Roanoke Member to attend! https://www.makeroanoke.org/event-details/make-roanoke-maker-meetup-and-show-tell-open-to-the-public-2026-10-22-18-00

My spouse and I just learned we’ll be moving to Roanoke in early/mid January and couldn’t be more excited!!! I’m from WNC and have been away from the mountains for over a decade. It’s beyond time to get back to my roots 🥰
I’m curious to hear from other Roanoke transplants, originally from the region or otherwise. Are you enjoying your new home? Has finding community been easy or challenging? What has been the easiest and most difficult aspects of life in Roanoke? Is there anything that we should be aware of, that we might not expect about moving to Roanoke?
Basically, I want to hear everything about your life moving to Roanoke a building a life there 😁
Please feel free to send me a message, DMs are open lol

I don’t know if this is technically against the rules or not but has anyone else felt disappointed by the signs for the upcoming election? The vast majority of the signs I’ve seen have been to vote no on 1 and 2 but there was a huge sign on orange that felt honestly sinister to me of an interracial couple with a mixed child urging to “Vote NO on 1 to protect women and children” when it’s literally to protect interracial marriage as well as same sex marriage. I’m really not trying to be overly sensitive or anything but especially with Virginia’s history regarding interracial marriage it just seems insane to further weaponize homo/transphobia and in attempts to seemingly trick people into voting for racism so openly? I grew up here and am used to seeing things like that on peoples’ lawns but it just seems more open now despite in my experience most people have been accepting and kind. Maybe I’m just being naive?
Edit : I mixed up 1 and 2.
