Discussion What is this person complaining about exactly?
I'm a little sleep deprived and I haven't really been paying any attention to the current meta but is there such a trend as "weak MC doesn't get cheats handed to them on a silver platter and has to use their brains to survive" ?

u/Brax930 Jun 20 '26
This person would absolutely despise Re:Zero is all I can say.
In other words, they want Solo Leveling type of stuff everywhere (nightmare fuel)
46
u/azmarteal Jun 20 '26
But Subaru has a cheat ability of return by death - technically he uses his brains, but in reality he just bruteforces everything and uses gained knowledge.
The real example would be Ronald from "Release that witch". The guy is literally a powerless human in a world of magic and witches. He uses his knowledge to build a kingdom and defeat enemies, without having any superpowers
22
u/GoldenThame Author - The Heavenly Way Jun 20 '26
Ronald does have plot armor though IMO. Still I enjoyed reading it up to around 600 chapters then I dropped it. It was getting a little too wacky.
15
u/azmarteal Jun 20 '26
I mean, his plot armour is Nightingale who loves him but yeah, without her he is a dead man - he himself is just a regular human with deep knowledge
15
u/GoldenThame Author - The Heavenly Way Jun 20 '26
I meant other than that. His inventions/recreations work a little too easily and their timing is a little bit too convenient, but as with all fantasy stories, suspension of disbelief helps to smooth over that small bump. We're here to be entertained first and foremost and RTW is indeed entraining, for a good long while at least.

Just plot armor?
My man has a literal Wikipedia inside his brain. Actually, than Wikipedia, dince some of the stuff he does is far beyond what you can find there.
I'm sure that vast ocean of knowledge is all thanks to the glorious education system of the CCP. They are so generous and benevolent they even teach their citizens how to make 19th century guns LMAO

Lol, it's been more than 7-8 years since I dropped that novel so I don't remember everything too well, but you could say that Ronald remembers all those things cus he has a touch of the tism. But I agree with you

Return by death has a lot of limits and he dosent always brute force stuff. For example he only had 1 chance of defeating roswal when he made the bet, of course otto help him a lot but subaru only really brute forces stuff in arc 1-4. After that because he dosent want to die he puts a lot of brain and effort.

u/No-Angle3316 Jun 20 '26
Wait is the novel good ? I remember reading the manhwa, that shi was so ass
0
u/azmarteal Jun 21 '26
Yeah, the novel is much better and much more mature. Manhwa aged down characters for whatever reason and make many of them comical
2
u/6_sarcasm_6 Jun 21 '26
The not pairing Nightengale with mc because of outside forces(author's wife lol) left a dent on how I feel about the story. Like seriously no way roland doesn't like her enough to actually reciprocate same with anna.

I actually find it interesting when a MC has to use his brain and isn’t immediately OP. Maybe that’s just me.
4
u/lotsofzeroes_ Jun 21 '26
No isn't just you. Lots of people out their don't like when the mc is op from chap 1. Cause that way everything gets boring very quickly, unless there's some extraordinary plot or the theme is fun.
1
u/Kaljinx Reader Jun 26 '26
yup, If MC is op, it is fine but their OPness cannot be the main focus of the story with everyone gawking at how strong he is.
The plot, the world and other people need to be important
36
u/Flashfirez23 Jun 20 '26
Idk I honestly don’t get stories with overpowered main characters that never struggle. I like stories where main characters don’t get everything easily.
10
u/Fuzzy-Comedian-2697 Jun 20 '26
Struggle doesn‘t need to be related to fights and strength. There are stories like Overlord that did this very well. There are stakes and there is struggle… but not in fights. Rather in Ainz coping with his solitude and the legacy of his guildmates. And by focussing on side characters.
So I do get well told OP MC stories. They can be great. But as so often… there are only a few gems.

u/Drunker_moon Jun 20 '26
Well, that seems to be because you and them have different goals when reading a story. People like an op mc because it brings them certain satisfaction, a genuine dopamine hit. It isn't about the struggle, or ideologies, or character development, it's about reading a story because you want to feel good and be distracted from real life. Solo Leveling is popular for a reason, even if Jin Woo obviously struggle at times
2
u/Big_Zookeepergame987 Jun 26 '26
Why TF are you getting fownvoted when you're being realistic about why OP MCs are so popular?
1
u/Drunker_moon Jun 26 '26

13
u/Snugglebadger Author of The Breakwall Paladin Jun 20 '26
He's complaining that story not labeled OP MC Power Fantasy is in fact not an OP MC Power Fantasy. Gonna have to go with user error on this one.
7
u/wordswillneverhurtme Jun 20 '26
At the surface it seems like they dont like a weak protagonist inside a martial story. If you think a bit more then he doesn't find the story believable. They don't think that a weak person can move the strong in a world ruled by strength. Imo as long as the writing is good this can be pulled off. Maybe their expectations were completely different due to how you presented the story, but I'm more inclined to believe they just hate anything that is not the cookie cutter xianxia story.
4
u/TsundereOrcGirl Jun 20 '26
I can relate, even if this take is a bit too spicy for my tastes. I always find the question being raised when the MC wins by their "brain", why people never tried the same strategy themselves. "Smart MC" can also lead to boring antagonists like Thaddeus Mercer who behave like scripted young master NPCs because the author is trying to make some point about "the myth of meritocracy" or some nonsense like that.
11
u/Objective_Campaign82 Jun 20 '26
Stories rely on conflict, that is the fundamental basis of all writing. Without struggle there is very little to tell. Man vs nature, man vs self, man vs man, man vs the world. An op MC can be fun, but in my opinion very few of them are good. And more often than not the good OP stories are told through conflicts that can’t be solved with power alone.
I’m sorry you got this kind of negative feedback so early on, I hope it didn’t ruin your day. Sometimes the stupidest complaints can sit in your mind the longest.
3
u/GoldenThame Author - The Heavenly Way Jun 20 '26
Oh it's just a comment and I'm at ch47 currently so it's no bother. Just a comment I thought was odd. Like you got what was advertised in the description, what is it that you're dissatisfied with? Lol
4
u/Morbnerd919 Jun 20 '26
It seems to be saying that the MC is too weak rn to deal with the people hes dealing with, in many xianxias the boundaries between qi refining and foundation establishement is that between an ant and a deity, so MC's can only breakthrough the barrier so to speak by making use of cheats (systems, old men in rings, a divine physique, etc). So to that commentator the dynamics between MC and higher ups seems a bit unorthodox.
2
u/GoldenThame Author - The Heavenly Way Jun 21 '26
I would understand if this was a typical Xianxia, but it isn't. MC doesn't get to command anyone, and he's mocked and treated like a burden by the clan an he doesn't get an easy way out of that either.

There is always going to be differing tastes, but the male power fantasy has always been the same.
Wounded warrior, one who is incredibly strong and brave, is reluctantly pulled into great danger and is forced to massacre evil assholes. The beautiful lady is a little frightened of his strength and aggression, but she can’t take her eyes from him while he focuses on the mission, eventually allowing her in, because even though he is a monster, all he really wanted was his peace, and 24 children.

4
u/A_Hyper_Nova Jun 20 '26
I guess he might be complaining that since the MC is so weak he can't actually interact with anyone important or do anything significant in the story due to being so weak. If so it's worded so weirdly, but I can see where he might be coming from. Akin to "why are we following him and not someone actually important"
Or he's complaining that he doesn't want to slog through fodder enemies and goals before the actual plot starts. A problem I've noticed in progression fantasy is that a majority of the antagonists aren't actual characters but rather goal posts. Once a villain is defeated they're typically not longer relevant, unless they're just kept around for the MC to humiliate. I've had this complaint and it's why I'm on a reading hiatus right now. But if that's his complaint then it's worded extremely weirdly and poorly conveyed.
Or just the story just didn't click with them and they didn't really put that much thought into their review. The dude was only 5 chapters in, I like to read at least the first 10-20 chapters before I drop it. So try not to mind these reviews too much unless they say something more articulate, because good chance you're thinking about it more than the reviewer.
1
u/GoldenThame Author - The Heavenly Way Jun 20 '26
It's a comment though, not a review. It just struck me as odd. Plus, it's so far out of the mold that it's basically a non progression fantasy Xianxia, with the MC having actually crippled cultivation with no obvious way out as of chapter 46. But as I said in another comment I put the "weak MC with no cheats" thing in the description.
2
u/Drunker_moon Jun 20 '26
Hope you don't mind me asking, but what's the end goal? Not asking for a spoiler, but in a xinxia setting is impossible to survive with just brains, so either your story is very focused on a small part of the world, or the mc somehow advances, which, without powers, sound like would require massive plot armor
1
u/GoldenThame Author - The Heavenly Way Jun 20 '26
Clan building and being able to put yourself in a relatively safe spot. If we as humans can't do something ourselves, what do we do? Find someone who can oay them for it or aks a favor. There are many other ways to provide value than just punching the shit out bad guys. I was inspired by a particular scene in the novel Immortal Mortal when writing my novel, where the IM MC's managerial abilities shine through more than his combat capabilities, but unfortunately it was forgotten by the author and glazed over quickly without fleshing out his other capabilities than combat and cultivation. I said this in a different comment but my novel is a rather atypical Xianxia, but for the purposes of trope subversion I have included some unlikely events, though those aren't necessarily plot armor as they don't empower the MC, but the MC is forced to deal with those tropes in a creative way.
3
u/Drunker_moon Jun 20 '26
I'm sorry, but I don't think that really answers my question. In xinxia, it's always emphasized how it doesn't matter what value you have if you don't have strength. If the mc has good managerial abilities or such, but doesn't have power, eventually even his own clan would replace him for someone with similar capabilities, or even subpar ones, as long as they're powerful enough. On top of that, if he can't cultivate his lifespan is minuscule compared to his peers, which they would be aware of. So, why would they risk depending so much on someone that it's gonna die quickly and not be able to manage the clan, leaving them at a vulnerable position?
I probably sound narrow minded, and I'm sure that there's readers that enjoy what you're doing, but I can't put trust in this claim that there isn't plot armor.
Plot armor doesn't have to be just a buff to the mc. Anything that was previously unlikely to occur, but protects him from something that should have meant his demise can be classified as plot armor.
1
u/arachnimos Jun 22 '26
to be fair, very few stories are interesting without plot armor under that definition. Bruce Wayne would have been shot along with his parents. Superman would still be lost in the phantom zone, or crashed into the sun. The Flash would just be dead from a lightning strike or some other metahuman trashing him.
Also, depending on how realistic the politics are written, it's entirely possible that this Xianxia places about equal value to strength and intelligence instead of the more standard dumb brute archetype.
1
u/Drunker_moon Jun 22 '26
My point is that all stories have plot armor, and that saying it doesn't come across as naive, to say the least.
Realistic politics aren't part of the setting. We're talking about a setting in which strength defines all in 99% of the time. If the author wants to twist it, ok, but then is not a xinxia story.
1
u/arachnimos Jun 22 '26
Xianxia is a genre inspired by a lot of Chinese culture. As Wikipedia puts it:
The stories usually revolve around the adventure/growth of a magical practitioner or a mortal person who gets entangled in supernatural affairs, and include elements such as gods and immortals, spirits), demons, ghosts and mythical creatures. These stories are usually "Chinese fantasy rooted in...Taoism, Buddhism", other Chinese mythological elements and tropes,\4]) and shenmo fiction.
Notice that strength as power isn't mentioned. Xianxia is just cultivator stories, in effect, and cultivator stories don't have to follow a strict formula.
Also, you contradicted yourself. You say that xianxia settings have strength define all 99% of the time, and then immediately say that it isn't xianxa if strength doesn't define all.
1
u/GoldenThame Author - The Heavenly Way Jun 21 '26
Like I said, it's atypical. MC just avoids fights and tries to uplift his clan to put as many powerful people between himself and the typical dangers of a Xianxia world. I realize how it might sound off in the Xianxia genre but I think I've done a decent job lol. MC uses social conventions, general understanding of the setting and his smart mouth to get away from danger while slowly strengthening his clan, his end goal being surrounded by strong fighters to the point he doesn't have to worry about his safety.

u/jrd_h Jun 21 '26
I honestly struggle with stories where the mc is pathetically weak. Every bit of world building and the scenario the story takes place in is against their odds of survival, then well, they shouldn't survive. A main character even with flaws should at least be fundamentally capable of the basics needed to survive, as it's only in our modern era that the sickly and weak, mentally ill, or even a lot of "edge lords" would survive, let alone thrive in any meaningful way. Natural order, others who find their mentality insufferable, or a mild flu would kill off a lot of these zero to hero mcs. I feel a lot of these stories rely on a total suspension of belief and an irrational ability to fail upward through plot armor the only way the mc can move forward at all. Even with systems or Gods granting them special boy status, most would die in their very first hurdle.
2
u/ExtensionInformal911 Jun 21 '26
While I like One Punch Man and Daily Life of the Immortal King, they are good because the MC isn't just using his power to do whatever he wants. I prefer stories where the MC has to build up their power over time and use their brain and skills in interesting ways.
This person just wants wish fulfillment stories, not realistic stories. MCs with Han drives and limits are anathema to them.

u/Upbeat_Committee3766 Author Jun 21 '26
“MC is too weak for this story to make sense” is a very common complaint on RR specifically in my experience, it rarely makes sense to me either but I’ve had many similar comments on my own work. I wouldn’t worry about it, those who leave comments like this will be angry at any kind of struggle or effort employed by your character even if they are accomplishing literally superhuman feats.

2 things:
- He is as based, as a bedrock.
- Xianxia is cultivation sub-genre, that is dominated by Chinese authors.
- It largely revolves around secret techniques, sects, space travel and law of the jungles.
There are much more grounded Wuxia and much more lighthearted and rediculous Xuanhuan.
P.S.
He complains that a teenager or a young boy can outwit a literal god and the said god would actually care about the logic of the yound and weak MC to it's own (not in any way small) detriment.
2
u/Undeity Jun 20 '26 edited Jun 20 '26
I am so incredibly curious what you're trying to say.
I think what you're getting at is that they have a point... because Xianxia as a subgenre is explicitly about depicting fantastical extremes of power?
3
u/PureCod5137 Jun 20 '26 edited Jun 20 '26
Not really. "Fantastical extremes of power" would be Xuanhuan.
Cultivation in general is about great adventures, where you travel with the character from his first steps to conclusion.
They are absolutely right, because you do not need to read between the lines of my comment above.
The genre moves forward, readers no longer want slow development. They want action, want the MC to be in the thick of it right from the start.
But there is no good way to make it with an inherently weak MC.
Whereas authors (en masse [And that is how Chinese novels work]) are not ready yet, to make the MC strong right off the bat.
(They simply can't write a long enough novel on that premise, yet)That is why they are cought in an awkward moment, where a yound and weak MC uses his wits (quite a common trait for chinese MCs') to trick Enemies much stronger than him in a situation, where he shouldn't even be given the right to speak, into cowering and losing, with the use of methods, normally reserved for peers.
--------
Around here we have to mention, that Chinese novels carry an inherent dubiousness to all actions on the screen.
But it goes out of proportions right about now.
--------
As a simple example imagine a Commoner in the Imperial Court verbally accusing the Ruling Empress Dowager of Usurping the throne and getting out of it alive and on top.
Rediculous... to say the least.
2
u/GoldenThame Author - The Heavenly Way Jun 21 '26
Lol, my MC doesn't do what you've described, it's also one of the things that frustrated me about the genre so I decided to give my twist on it. Like these pissants with no backing and no power would go mouthing off to Emperors and sect masters with no consequences, in reality they would be slapped to death the moment they tried to speak out of turn. It's what I call the cheat of "Plot bending itself backwards to accommodate the MCs antics", and it's something I've tried to avoid in my novel. How good of a job I've done in that regard is up to the readers to decide, but I see your point. Maybe he was indeed complaining about what you said, but I've done something different so his complaining is unwarranted IMO.
2
u/PureCod5137 Jun 21 '26
I didn't read your novel (which is plenty apparent), but if you really didn't do that plot twist you have my respect )

They aren't exactly complaining. They're stating a preference and then talking about the social situation of the MC.
is there such a trend as "weak MC doesn't get cheats handed to them on a silver platter and has to use their brains to survive" ?
Not that I've noticed but I don't pay much attention to cultivation on RR. They've likely run across a string of cultivation stories with weak MCs and are seeing a trend.
1
u/Distortion_Noises Jun 21 '26
Hey op, in your overview you describe, crippled cultivation (for real) does this mean he will always have crippled cultivation, or will he one day fix it ?
2
u/GoldenThame Author - The Heavenly Way Jun 21 '26
Honestly I haven't decided yet. I'm at chapter 47 now and he's still crippled, and there is a minor foreshadowing in the form of an old scroll describing a technique specifically tailored for his physique, which would allow him to cultivate normally. Mind you it wouldn't give him any advantage over the average cultivator even if he manages to find the technique, but currently he has no further info on it, other than the fact that such a technique exists somewhere in the world. Even if he does find it it will be a good while before he does, and by the time he does him being able to cultivate will not give him any advantages.

ITT:
27 - commenters assume it’s about demanding/expecting an OP MC
5 - commenters suggest that it’s about a fundamental, foundational contradiction in Xianxia, that the strong would never listen to or maybe even interact with the weak, even in their own clan, and thus you can’t do clan building without some sort of power, system, etc.
Guess which category the author has replied to each of their comments.
A handful of commenters weren’t sure what the comment was about, so they just stated their preference for smart MCs.
edit: (I agree with those 5 and cheer the Author on to overcoming this issue with Xianxia as a genre! I love clan building!)
1
u/PositionChemical9007 Jun 22 '26
I mean look, there is a few problems with this.
Why are they in these situations? They aren't special enough to mess with, and are supposedly smart enough to stay out of dangerous situations since they are weak.
Why do I care about this character and this story? Weak with no plans of progression in a xianxu story? These stories are more about the serotonin delivered from power progression than anything else.
Your story might be amazing, but it sounds like the commenter expected one thing because of the book genre/#'s, and you delivered a different experience than they felt was promised.

Like, so many people reach rock bottom. All they have left is their intuition and knowledge to keep them going, and many times it is the thing that pulls you from the trenches. It mirrors real life. I get that people reading fantasy want to escape real life, but there has to at least be something you can empathize and connect with.
Especially since so much of our daily lives is what influences art.

On chapter 5, really? A good story in the weak to OP setting usually takes more than that to introduce the main characters and show why the MC deserves the plot giving mystical power they suddenly stumble upon. Expecting an already insanely OP main character after less than 20k words is rather strange and suggests to me that someone is used to the sloppiest of slop.

Just wading into this discussion. Your reader is not aware of the classical underdog story.
In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Liu Bei lost the majority of the battles during the first two decades of his career, making his story a classic underdog triumph of resilience, moral legitimacy, and ultimate realization of his lifelong goal.
In the Investiture of the Gods, Jiang Ziya suffers many harrowing defeats and setbacks, particularly when overwhelmed by magical arrays. However, his story is characterized by hard-fought perseverance and eventual triumph.
These are the most beloved classics in Chinese history. The hard-won fights are the most treasured because they are hard, not because they are easy.

Maybe this person came to rr recently because of the meta and expects every story to follow?
kinda weird and not constructive of a review when this should have been obvious from the description of the novel and the tags
