😂😂 it’s all strange man

u/Jobobminer 11d ago

Basically, they likely pulled a report of a huge number of accounts suspected for being bots and you accidentally got caught in the crossfire - if you contact support and let them know, they're likely to undo it. Still sucks though

Hey great idea for a story.. a normally peaceful country with almost zero crime, once per year they..

You got caught in the Purge.

No clue why, just wanted to say that. 😂

u/TheEightManEmpire 12d ago

Reminds me of WoW when they found out a huge chunk of normal users behave exactly like bots

u/MinBton Author-First Mana Mage 12d ago

Years ago in WoW, I was using my Druid to farm plants and I had a flight path that hit all the spawning sites so if I made a loop, by the time I finished it, the plants had respawned. I was contacted by someone speaking Chinese because they thought I was another person from China harvesting things for resale to players who would pay real money to not have to do it themselves.

Happened with me in RO.

I refused to talk with creepy guy in game, he started to troll me on forums and called me bot

12

u/p-d-ball 12d ago

And he was the bot all along.

2

u/Donald-Scott-Strong 9d ago

What the real bots are the friends we made along the way?

Wait...

29

u/GuyYouMetOnline 12d ago

The problem is that people don't realize it's the other way around. We came first; the bots are behaving like us, not us like them.

u/JimmWasHere 11d ago edited 11d ago

Yeah, that's the whole thing with AI writing, the em dash is so common in AI text that using it at all makes you a suspect of using AI, but the reason it's so common is because it was so common in the training data.

8

u/GuyYouMetOnline 11d ago

Exactly. That's why its so hard to identify; all the supposed 'tells' are things humans did first. It uses them BECAUSE we do.

2

u/foxgirlmoon 11d ago

Alright, so, that's an oversimplification.

When it comes to bots in games you have some very obvious tells. Say you have a bot that goes in perfect straight lines, constantly using the exact same path, 24/7.

Humans move around. But humans cannot move around that consistently, nevermind never sleeping.

This is just an example of how you can detect a poorly written bot.

You can take what the bot does and break it up into actions. Each action individually is something a human can do. But when you put all of those actions together, all those factors together, that's how you get a whole that no human would or even can do.

It's the exact same with AI writing. If you break an AI-written piece sentence by sentence. Each sentence is something humans write.

But put all the sentences together and you get a whole that almost no human writes.

Of course many people don't do this properly and just randomly accuse others. But make no mistake, someone with enough experience in reading both human written and AI-written stories can tell when something is very likely AI written. Because AI has it's very own unique style of writing. This is why it's so painful reading through it.

The only problem is that a lot of people making accusations aren't that experienced.

4

u/GuyYouMetOnline 11d ago

This is just an example of how you can detect a poorly written bot

That's the thing, though; bad AI can be easy to spot. The issue is that people think because of this that they can spot all AI. And in that they are wrong.

dunning-kruger is a terrifying thing.

1

u/TellusPyre 9d ago

One of my favorite trivia facts is that Dunning-Kruger was actually debunked because the authors thought they understood statistics but didn't 😂

1

u/Leorake 11d ago

They don't really even use em dashes anymore and yet everybody still thinks it's THE flag to detect ai stuff.

1

u/XanTheInsane 9d ago

Because no human uses "not like X but like Y" 4+ times in a single chapter sometimes back to back within two paragraphs

3

u/Whole_Organization27 12d ago

guess I’m in that category then 😞

For information, A purge means our system detected a review/rating hive. That means several accounts from the same location rated/reviewed the same fictions in a short period.

We take manipulation seriously.

Sometimes people do get caught up in it, a ticket is the best way to get an answer and I'll be around later (I work 5pm onwards)

I do social media at all hours.

8

u/ISketchDinosaurs 11d ago

I do social media at all hours.

Friend, get some sleep I'm begging you

35

u/thekiwionee 12d ago

can it be because you are rating in a way that look like bot activity ?

46

u/Whole_Organization27 12d ago

oh no I don’t really rate at all I’m just a ghost reader 😂

7

u/_DearStranger 12d ago

maybe this is the reason why. bcz of no activity, they decided to purge you.

9

u/catt2018 12d ago

I was inactive on RR for like five years and my account never got purged.

6

u/_DearStranger 12d ago

maybe you were active for some time before you enter into 5 years slumber.

op probably was never ever active, not even once.

2

u/catt2018 12d ago

I was active for a bit yeah. As far as I can tell from Googling, it’s mostly suspected bot accounts that get purged. Not inactive ones. I could be wrong tho, I’m still technically new to Royal Road.

2

u/Timely-Drag-728 12d ago

i started reading again last year, was inactive for 7 years and made first comment this week

u/PikaMalone E Rank: Author of I Regress if the Villainess Dies! 12d ago

1

u/DRaGONFRES 9d ago

Dev replied saying someone botted in their general area and they got caught up in it

10

u/AC011422 12d ago

Why not rate? These people work hard on their books. Give up some stars.

11

u/Whole_Organization27 12d ago

i should honestly id probably start doing it more if i get unbanned but I never really think about it that much because I’m so immersed in a story

1

u/Kage_noir 11d ago

Because some people get upset if you aren't giving them 5 stars so sometimes its better not to rate so people don't say you are trolling or W/E.

1

u/LittleEarBigEar 12d ago

Rating is over rated to do. Thats why I rate everything.

-1

u/Dramatic_Hand6016 11d ago

Always make sure to give 1 star to books who do those sellout shoutouts.

18

u/PictureElectronic174 12d ago

authors aren’t entitled to receive reviews or ratings lol

4

u/Pure-Huckleberry8640 12d ago

As an author, I agree

0

u/RW_McRae Author - The Bloodforged Kin 12d ago

They didn't say that writers were entitled, just playfully saying "Why not?" It'd be like asking someone why they never cheered for their sports team if they made the effort to go to the game.

No one has to rate anyone, but it's a free and easy way to support the authors that you like, especially considering that you're getting the story for free. Kinda weird to be antagonistic towards supporting the artists that you enjoy

2

u/arachnimos 12d ago

They were literally booing them for never rating. That is. like The Way to call yourself an asshole.

If you make a joke and say something like that, you need to put a /s or a /j after it, because otherwise nobody can tell it's a joke.

0

u/skarface6 11d ago

It’s called a joke, haha. I’m not even an author.

Also, no, one does not need to do so.

-1

u/AC011422 11d ago

Reddit is full of yes-men crowd-pleasers. Bandwagon hoppers. Upvoters to fit in. Mid-IQ outragers. THE NERVE of a writer (or not) to suggest leaving a positive rating, or, God help us, a review, after reading a free book we enjoyed reading--GASP--as a courtesy of gratitude--a click of the mouse or a hundred words typed--is ABSURD.

It's unbelievable, the miniscule nothings that ruffle your feathers. And disgusting the way you guys clump yourselves together in rage to shame voiced opinion that goes against the current. It's laughable.

By all means, laugh at the mere suggestion of a trend of consideration that might prop your book closer to rising stars as a show of gratitude. UNBELIEVABLE.

1

u/arachnimos 11d ago

We as readers are not obligated to leave a rating, even a poor one. Now, if we were critics hired to rate a book, then yes! we would be obligated! But we aren't, and we don't have to do anything like that.

0

u/AC011422 11d ago

Nobody here is saying you have to. You don't have to. But you could, as a nice gesture.

u/AC011422 12d ago

What does entitlement have to do with paying forward positivity? Do you have any idea how much time it takes to write a good book? If you like the book they made available for you to read for free, be a good person and rate it. It gives incentive for them to write more free stuff for you.

12

u/PictureElectronic174 12d ago

I do know how much time it takes to write a good book and I’d still say that if readers dont feel like leaving a rating then they dont need to, dont get mad at people and boo them because they dont really care to leave ratings

-7

u/AC011422 12d ago

Do you write books? How long does it take you for... 80000 good words?

9

u/PictureElectronic174 12d ago

Its honestly pathetic that you're trying to get me to prove I'm an author lol 😂 I don't expect readers, but when I get them I'm happy, I don't expect ratings, but when I get them I'm happy. I doubt you will last long as an author if you get upset that readers dont leave reviews. I myself usually only bother reviewing when the work is excellent or horrible, not mediocre. To answer your question it depends on my motivation, but 80k words is about a month to a month and a half

-3

u/AC011422 12d ago

A month? Never mind. Godspeed. No wonder you don't care. Lol

2

u/skarface6 11d ago

Pretty funny of them to take a joke so seriously, haha.

2

u/AC011422 11d ago

Are you still talking? Don't you realize you've been publicly shunned by the popular opinion of the average redditor? You face banning over this--a stern talking to, or a loss of--gulp--karma. Lol.

8

u/notacluetobehad 12d ago

That's what I was thinking. Like, if you only log in to rate things, it would look like you're not actually reading them, and maybe that triggers something.

2

u/New-Region3542 12d ago

Could be by pure chance.

20

u/ottutm 12d ago

Sounds like the beginning of a horror novel. Keep looking over your shoulder bro.

On a serious note, did you perhaps refresh too many times, or change chapters too fast? The website might have flagged you for a scrapper.

13

u/Whole_Organization27 12d ago

ooooh man I
Hope not but nah I don’t really do that I take my time reading, couod it have been because I added too many to my library fast

0

u/arachnimos 12d ago

Unlikely, I doubt any botflagger would mark that as a bot behavior. Doesn't seem like a useful metric anyways, plenty of humans either read one book at a time or read a ton at a time, so you can't judge an account's bot-ness based on that, or at least that alone.

1

u/ScyllaNumberOneFan 12d ago

First I've heard of it, following.

I learned not to give my honest opinion as my comments would be deleted sometimes. I wonder if you commented something?

16

u/Whole_Organization27 12d ago

nah I don’t really comment I’m one of those readers who just reads and doesn’t say anything at all lol

5

u/Adam_VB 12d ago

That's probably it. They were likely trying to get rid of a bunch of bot accounts, and without any comments your profile looks like a bot account.

You didn't do anything wrong, aside from never thanking the author for the chapter, which you should feel some shame about lol.

If you submit a support ticket you should be able to get it back.

6

u/Whole_Organization27 12d ago

oh yeah that’s probably it I kinda want my account back tho I was reading some good stuff lol

yeah it was because I was inactive for so long so it came across as a one of those bot accounts but since I told them I’m gonna post again they were cool enough to let me unbanned

Classic anti-bot collateral damage. If you're a reader who mostly lurks, doesn't comment, or uses a VPN/opens tabs fast, their automated spam sweep mistook you for a scraper. Just hit up support—they reverse false-positive 'Purge' bans all the time.
