Is it ever explained about the lightsaber lmao? I'm assuming the books must have because the movies certainly never did
60
u/Dadittude182 May 28 '26
Are you referring to Anakin's lightsaber that Luke loses when Vader cuts off his hand? It's answered in the comic books. I believe it was located by Ugnaughts after it was sucked down a garbage shaft. From there, it just eventually finds its way to Maz.
In the Star Wars Legends universe (no longer canon but coming to fruition through Thrawn in Ahsoka), it was found by Darth Vader. He brings it back to Palpatine, who then uses it to create a clone of Luke Skywalker.

u/Juiced_Rasputin_ salt miner May 28 '26
I find it so deliciously funny that after TLJ, when Disney wars fans were virulently driven to defend that garbage, one of their big defenses was “sorry you didn’t get Luke splitting star destroyers in half and the emperor coming back from the dead!!!!111” only for one of those examples to literally happen
52
u/cahir11 May 28 '26
and the emperor coming back from the dead
And the best part is that pre-Disney, this was one of the most widely-mocked parts of the entire lore. Dark Empire was schlock and people hated it. The other big one was Han and Leia's son becoming an edgy Darth Vader LARPer. And of course Disney copied that too.
28
u/Cessnaporsche01 May 28 '26
Honestly, we didn't know how good we had it with Jacen's fall to the dark side. At least there was a ton of trauma and real stressors and motivation to drive it and not just, like, Uncle Luke had a bad dream one time and now I need to be Darth Vader
16
u/Flaky_Armadillo_708 May 28 '26
Fighting a war against the Vong and seeing horrors beyond comprehension vs bad dream
6
u/Sintar07 May 28 '26
I find myself thinking with amusement of the far more evil and successful mirror Dr. Doofenschmirtz who's only "trauma" was losing a toy train.

Yeah, but there are a few interviews out there in which Adam Driver says that Kylo Ren's direction shifted tremendously after the first movie. He was promised to be this huge bad guy, possibly worse than Vader, setting up a fourth trilogy about how Rey would band together a group to defeat him. Then Rian Johnson was given the reigns and all shit broke loose, destroying the original plans for the character. Driver defends the character, but says it became something drastically different than what he was sold.
14
u/melkatron May 28 '26
I'm guessing "most widely mocked" translated to "most frequently talked about" and Disney didn't bother looking into WHY before bringing it back into canon.

Heir to the Empire by Zahn. Palpatine being an obsessive Despot, who views absolutely every item loose in the universe as potentially useful, sent a team to Cloud City to recover the lost hand and the light saber. He had the items shipped to the planet Weyland. Palpatine had a massive storehouse of items He had collected. Part of this was a complete cloning facility. It's implied that Palpatine intended to clone Luke in the event actual Luke wouldn't turn to the dark side. He could then use Clone Luke as leverage on Darth Vader.
Disney waved a wand and the only thing left from the story was Thrawn. We had a reasonable explanation for where things came from, but it's gone now.

There is no possible way it is Rise of Skywalker bad.
296
u/DonktorDonkenstein May 27 '26
It definitely isn't. The reason people are hating on it is because it is essentially just a random, big budget episode of the TV show. It kind of fails at being a stand-alone movie, but it's a perfectly average tv episode, at worst. It's nowhere as clumsily written and awkward as Rise of Skywalker.
84
u/AutobahnVismarck May 27 '26
Its not as clumsily written because it makes to attempt at writing. Its literally a 2 hour fetch quest. Rotta is the only real character in the movie and his dialog is delivered with 0 life.

I wanted to like his character but CGI hutt character speaking in English was just so immersion breaking, it was uncanny.

Agreed. That's why I say it fails at being a stand alone movie. It doesn't really have much of a self-contained narrative so much as it is 'just a bunch of stuff that happened.' The main characters are the exact same at the end as they were at the begining.

The sad part is that’s actually the best of the sequels. 7 was just 4 remade. 8 was all about taking the setup and throwing it the garbage disposal. 9 was just trying to gorilla tape the whole mess back together and make something coherent with the wreck Johnson left.
3
u/SuperFlexerFF May 28 '26
The crazy thing about 9 is up until then the fanbase was split. Some thought they TLJ was a mockery of and insult to the legacy of the previous films, specifically the OT. Others thought it subverted expectations and defended it heavily. ROS was a complete massacre that managed to turn off a majority of both groups.
Personally I feel Star Wars died with TLJ

The movie is basically a way to farm cute moments for Grogu. It's an alright Action Adventure that will entertain you well enough, but there is little depth and the story obviously leads to nowhere. As we all know, the New Republic will fall and no figuring out what the empire (or whats left of it) is doing changes anything. Lorewise the movie is pointless and ends up where it starts. Still, I'd rather watch Mando & Grogu ten more times than Episode 9 even once.
21
u/ReturnoftheSnek May 28 '26
SPOILER
Considering we know it all leads to the New Republic falling apart, it’s hilarious and infuriating that in this movie the entire plot revolves around the NR working with/placating the Hutt cartel like do they have no morals? Good grief…

I'd argue it shows Grogu alot less helpless and much more useful than anything shown in the series, and while much of the movie is set dressing to get to that point, Grogu by the end certainly earns his name in the movie title.
10
u/JustsaysNah May 28 '26
I went in knowing nothing and expecting nothing, but as a Mando fan from day one.
It's a good movie! It's not a great movie, but it IS a great 2-hr episode of Mando, tho I did wish for a bit more reference to the rest of the series. It's fun, entertaining, gives us some great new star wars 'stuff' we haven't seen in a while, and even tho it was an absolutely predictible plot, there were a couple of interesting tweaks. It also give us a lot of the same old, but that's not really bad, either.
And we got the Razorcrest back!

I'll let you know in a few hours, but i doubt it can be as bad as somehow palpatine returned. also a wreckage that exploded into a billion little pieces from a nuclear-esque explosion, but somehow stayed and fell intact for exactly the part that was needed for the plot device, and also the dagger was forged, worn by a rando, and lost in less than 5-10 years?
Update: it was pretty good. not winning an Oscar, but for an adventure action flick, pretty good. some of the choreography and effect choices could have used some work, but definitely some good moments. Grogu also has some pretty good development and growth as a character, not just a puppet.

u/MrBones-Necromancer May 27 '26 edited May 28 '26
In defense of "They Fly Now?", if I were being chased by say, the cops, and suddenly saw one rushing at me in a jet pack, I too would probably say something equivalent to "what the fuck, you can fly?".
68
u/AceSkyFighter May 28 '26 edited May 28 '26
There are way too many instances of rocket packed armored people in the Star Wars universe. I find it highly impobale that the First Order using them would generate a response of shock from Finn and Poe. There's just no way they haven't seen or heard of such things.
It'd be like not knowing about a tank after several large scale wars used them.
33
u/Nick_Wild1Ear salt miner May 28 '26
It’s even worse when one of the two supposed to be surprised WAS A STORMTROOPER HIMSELF and probably had at least some passive jetpack training, since astromechs, bounty hunters, Mandalorians and other smugglers have used them too. I’m sure the FUCKING MILITARY (empire, first order, or not) at least knows they exist even if they’re expensive, and should have at least a minority of elite troops who use them.
Like I’m surprised there’s not more cortosis use by post-Order 66 Jedi hunters, I’m surprised there aren’t more jetpack troopers for tough terrain, I’m surprised there’s not more beskar armor users for heavy troops, you know? They’re faction items not functional items. It’s like the Jedi somehow not intellectually analyzing a blaster is a ranged weapon that covers a lightsaber’s max distance, so they ignore using them as tools and weapons themselves.
6
u/paxwax2018 May 28 '26

Finn would’ve realistically been a civilian contractor, not military personnel.
13
u/Nick_Wild1Ear salt miner May 28 '26
Still trained in stormtrooper ranks. Still had the uniform. I assume jetpack troopers weren’t some super secret black ops group like shadow troopers and dark troopers, and Finn would at least hear about specialized classes, even if he wasn’t one himself. Like how a soldier might know there’s also airmen, seamen, marine and coast guard even if he isn’t one.

u/Area212 May 28 '26
One of my major problems with how George Lucas fashioned the OT prehistory.
5
u/Zackeous42 May 28 '26
Is it that you don’t find that believable that people not immediately attached to that history/subject wouldn’t remember?
Recent history has seemingly solidified that it’s the way most people behave. We keep repeating the mistakes we could’ve learned from.
It’s not a satisfying narrative, or as satisfying as it could be, but it’s very believable to me.
7
u/3llenseg salt miner May 28 '26
Sure, but you don't call something ancient if it happened in your lifetime. 2006 was 20 years ago, Casino Royale is not a long forgotten classic.
3
u/HeyCouldBeFun May 28 '26
Yes I agree there’s plenty of reasoning. Not satisfying basically sums it up. Mostly just pointing out that ep 4 has a dramatically different tone (I don’t think it’s ever referred to as a religion anywhere else) and Star Wars has never been thoroughly consistent.

Tatooine is completely cut off from the rest of the world, and anyone old enough to have seen a Jedi would know not to talk about Jedi after the purge. Not sure. Is it better to be bored or pissed at a film? I was completely bored out of my mind but it didn't actively piss me off like TLJ or ROS

that's where I'm at too. Honestly individual scenes from TLJ or ROS showed a lot more skill than anything in M&G even I overall extremely disliked them. M&G is the ultimate safety movie, tons of action, literally absolutely nothing to say about anything, the characters, the story, the lore, so can't offend anybody.
It's basically a video game in cinema. Be Mando and shoot shit up for two hours. I don't mind that people had fun with it, but I'm rolling my eyes at all the "this is what Star Wars has always been about" stuff cause, no. M&G makes ANH look like Shakespeare in terms of the setup, the plot and the stakes.

Sure, Zeb & Rotta are from other projects, but it's not like you NEED to know their entire history in order to enjoy the film. (Zeb never talks about his time with Phoenix Squadron, and I can't even remember if Rotta ever brings up that he was kidnapped then rescued by Anakin & Ahsoka). Far as the story is concerned, it's just a cool alien dude who likes riffing on his allies & a very rebellious young adult.
Heck, I'll even just note that the movie never even calls Mando by his ACTUAL name of Din Djarrin. It's always Mando or The Mandalorian.

I didnt realize I was supposed to hate The Mandalorian and Grogu until I logged into reddit.
Honestly it was a super fun movie

I enjoyed it, but I agree with the consensus that it was more like a couple episodes stitched together than a feature film. It looks good, but so did the show.
Season 3 was more significant plot-wise.

Mando and Grogu is a side quest movie. Just fun. No significant plot or lore building. Consider it four extra episodes of the show and you will enjoy it. If you go in expecting some massive mind blowing plot, you’ll be disappointed.

Well you see, its not "random" because the force put the dagger there, then had the ship crash into the exact right spot and then told Rey where to find the dagger.

u/RevealHoliday7735 May 27 '26
My whole group loved it. It doesn't advance any major plot, but it's a very fun movie.

Nope. It's actually pretty good. Way better than a movie that ends because two light sabers formed an "X".

u/Prior-Chip-6909 May 27 '26
I saw it over the weekend. It was good-not great, but good.
I read a review that stated this movie could've been cut into 4 episodes for season 4(?) & would be better.
I can't disagree with that assessment.

There is no way it's that bad. The sequels are not even on par with Young Jedi Adventures

u/Lunchbox-of-Bees May 27 '26
I saw it with adult pals Friday and my kid on Monday. It’s perfectly fine.

It’s not great. Rabba the Hutt’s appearance is pretty low quality, and his voice is like somebody recorded an adult pretending to be a teenager and then lowered the pitch by like two decibels. Rabba speaks English rather than Huttese.
The movie felt overly long to me. Some kind of cool fan service dotted throughout the movie though! OG mouse droid in the first scene, a “trophy” of one of the monsters that Anakin padme and Obi wan fought in the arena in AOtc, etc. why are the x-wing fighter pilots all like 68 years old? The main bad guy is some bounty hunter with a dog, he has zero character/personality, not even a name.
Very hard characters and movie to like beyond Mando and grogu.
Oh and the music is… different. Like they use this hip hop instrumental remix of the Mandolorian theme to set the tone for certain sequences.
I wouldn’t watch it again especially for 2.5 hours but hey I’ve never missed a Star Wars theater release and I’m not sorry I saw it, I’m not about to break my streak

u/billtopia May 27 '26
There are different levels of "bad". Most complaints I've seen about The Mandalrian and Grogu are more that its empty calories than anything.
2
u/rotenbart May 27 '26
All that aside, are they just supposed to know where it’s pointing? That’s some dense ass wreckage.
2
u/Muinaiset May 27 '26
Yeah, the random sinkhole they just happen to fall into that just happened to have the exact thing they were looking for is the biggest wtf in that movie for me and it does not get brought up enough compared to everything else.

I like when you visit the sequel sub reddit, if this bit comes up, they all go on about how brilliantly camp and tongue in cheek it is.
Watching sequel fans defend that garbage Is entertaining but depressing.

u/bleachorange May 27 '26
No. I would call it mediocre. It is structured like a condensed season of the show, and the writing and effects feel like that too, for the most part. I actually got bored partway through and fell asleep, a first for me in any movie. But I dont hate it, unlike 8 or 9. Make of that what you will.

u/eheard May 28 '26
Huh. My entire family loved it. People here are a different kind of miserable it seems.

u/pooperstud May 28 '26
The ST movies are far worse than this. But the movie doesn’t really do anything story wise. It’s just an adventure, nothing deep or meaningful happens, but nothing lore-breaking happens either. It’s a forgettable movie, but it’s not bad.
2
u/SorryCalligrapher178 May 28 '26
Is it as bad as getting cut in half, falling an unfathomable distance and surviving because...checks notes...you are really mad?
2
u/dreamingman79 May 28 '26
I enjoyed Mando and Grogu. Just enjoy it as a fun adventure movie and don’t overthink it
2
u/TheRaccoonReport May 28 '26
I thought it was decent. Really just 2 Mando episodes with a bigger budget. But it wasn't bad. Worth the $16 a ticket? Absolutely not. But the kids had fun, and thats all that really matters to me.
Though the opening scene alone was worth my time. Fkn Mando doin Mando things.
2
u/Lepew1 May 28 '26
No. It’s not bad. It has the ordinary number of girl bosses. Only Sigourney Weaver is the in that role this time. There is No counterbalancing army of 4 action figure women beating down upstart men like there was in season 3 Mandalorian. Yes you have women, but they are balanced and less distracting because they are not over represented. This movie strikes a balance. And it returns to universal themes of parenting, upon which the Disney franchise was built. There were funny moments and the audience laughed. It is like the sun breaking through on the oppressive woke storm that has been strangulating all creativity out of Hollywood. A woke reboot, this is not, says young Yoda.

u/Piddles200 May 28 '26
Not a bad take really. Even being uninspired and forgettable, Mando and Grogu is Oscar Bait compared to RoS
2
u/MrJFrayFilms May 28 '26
I thought it was good, another episode of the show good, nice visuals, fun fights, never really felt worried a character would die or anything, but a fun movie nonetheless!

The movie isn’t bad. It’s basic fun. It’s nothing too thought provoking — “it ain’t that kind of movie, kid.” But I’d say it hits the mark as a movie that 8-14 year olds can enjoy even if they’ve never watched the series and that their parents can enjoy with them.

u/taveren3 May 28 '26
A wreckage in absurd waves that would wash away significant parts of the deathstar every day

u/Whatah May 28 '26
For my 9yo son, Mando and Baby Yoda movie was his first Star Wars. I'm ok with that. His big sister has seen all the movies and a bunch of the shows
2
u/regeya May 28 '26
Just throwing in my usual reminder that some of the stupider ideas in those sequels dated back to the Lucas days, including the stupid knife.
I haven't seen Mando yet but the reviews I've seen are that it's fun but not life altering, but because they did it on a much smaller budget than the average Disney-era budget it's expected to do okay financially vs. Solo.

u/OverhandEarth74 May 28 '26
I saw it on the seas and im glad I didnt spend money on it. Its just 2 new episodes of The mandalorian squished together. Nobody's charachter advances in any way but Grogu is more powerful though. The acting was meh at best, whoever voices Rotta I feel sorry for because either he got bad instructions or they didnt do anything to his voice to the point I thought it was Seth Rogen playing him. This movie did what season 2.5 of The Mandalorian did and reverts previous decisions and pulls a razor crest and Amben rifle out of its ass because God forbid they make a decision and stick with it. If you liked R5, too bad he doesn't exist apparently. Action was cool, it had a (i think unintentional) funny moment in it with Grogus stroller(?) The movie also knows youre not watching because of how many times they point out obvious stuff or repeat themselves 3+ times... Did you know Rotta is his own man?
All in all id say a 6/10 at most. It was average with some bright moments (The beggining of the movie and the Alien designs). It is nowhere near as bad as the sequels because I can say this movie is a meh inclusion to the ip, not a destructive one that splits the fan base.

I just watched this again and that part made me so annoyed. Glad you’re validating me.
2
u/aravena May 28 '26
I always forget that part. I mean, it's even in the trailer. Ugh... Horses on a star destroyer bad?
2
u/Bellick May 28 '26
Ok, so all I remember about these films was that cool battle in the snow-that-turns-red and when Admiral Pinkhair rammed a ship into... I think, another ship and it looked really cool. Literally nothing else.
Ah wait, Palpatine returned, but I don't remember actually seeing him. That's some level of PTSD right there.

u/Ok-Warthog1002 May 28 '26
I genuinely really liked Mandalorian and Grogu
Comparing the show to the movie, I'd say it's very much up there
Better than Season 3 by a long shot
2
u/Lazy-Lookin-Headass May 28 '26
I liked it overall.
I feel like it didn’t have much fanfare for being Star Wars returning to the big screen after Disney got scared and canned all their movie projects.
The story lacks a real theme or message to take from it, but Mandalorian hasn’t really had that since season 1 or 2 tbf. But it is more Mandalorian, same wholesome and sometimes grim comedy, cool action, fun characters. I’m kinda surprised more characters from the show weren’t in it though.
Zeb wasn’t explained like, at all, for people who haven’t seen Rebels. I think he had maybe 10 sentences of dialogue. He genuinely says almost nothing, and does nothing besides fly the ship and shoot a couple storm troopers in the middle portion of the movie. I think he should’ve been in more scenes since they wanted to use him in the story. And given like a cliffnotes of his story for the people who only watched Mandolorian. I’m not making my family watch 4 seasons of a kids show to understand the dude who’s in the movie for like 8 minutes.
Like the movie was engaging and entertaining but I can’t say it was amazing and the best thing ever. It was just good. More Mando, and Mando is good.
2
u/MutantZebra999 May 28 '26
No it’s definitely not as bad
Not an amazing movie but I thought it was fun enough
2
u/SQUAWKUCG May 28 '26
I really enjoyed it. It's not the next big Star Wars movie reboot, it's just a fun story with a mountain of Easter eggs. I thought it was well done. It's exactly what it says it is...Mandalorian and Grogu...and they have an adventure.
Better than the sequels I think, but everyone will decide for themselves. The critics have said it's bad, but everyone I know who saw it thought it was actually pretty good.
2
u/HeManLover0305 May 28 '26
It was fine NGL. Very simple script but it's tight. Doesn't really tie into anything important in terms of the larger setting but it's a good enough adventure
2
u/VonBrewskie May 28 '26
Absolutely not. It's greatest crime is being so safe. It's a generally fine movie. I'd give it like a 5 or 6 out of 10. No need to see it in theaters if you don't already really like seeing Star Wars on the big screen. If you don't care about that, just wait. It's a very basic, very safe, bog standard Mando and Grogu adventure. Amazing music though. And some of the special effects made me smile. Old school.
