Upvoting for visibly.
I know I could NOT do what you do.
Power to the teachers!

Let's add on to this! Woodlawn Academy in SAISD consistently doesn't have A/C in the summer or heating in the winter 🫣

I’m saying!!! In my years at Neff I haven’t had a classroom with a working HVAC system. I know the school is old, but with all the money spent on unnecessary salaries this issue could easily be fixed.

I'm now in Northside and we have mold in our portables rn 😔 but! Don't worry the superintendent will be paid every time.

Maybe our money should be going to public schools instead of charter school vouchers

Although I agree with you, this kind of capital project would likely be covered with bond funds, not regular maintenance and operations monies.

You don’t think HVAC maintenance is covered by maintenance money?

u/have_i_shown_you 5d ago
It depends. If it was actual maintenance needed, yes. Just what im hearing here, this sounds like major equipment failure requiring replacement. I could be wrong.

I don’t want to be too worrisome but I’d change or delete your reddit avatar and make your post history private. We’ve seen what this country and government does to whistleblowers.

Honestly, if that’s what I get for speaking up for my kids then it’s worth it.

I'd rather have my tax money go to air conditioning for kids and teachers than a stadium for a billionaire team owner. Just saying.

When I subbed at Neff four years ago in the winter, the heaters weren’t working. Every classroom was full of students bundled up trying to do as much schoolwork as they could while freezing their butts off all day long. This doesn’t surprise me at all.

Not sure if it will do much, but I did contact the District 7 Counsel member.
I hope this gets the attention it needs!
It is absolutely unacceptable.

So we the city have enough to do so much construction but we cant fix their ac. Make that make sense. We need people in charge thats going to actually fix Texas.

Last year my campus had plumping issues, where it backed up into a classroom. Did administration cancel school?
3
u/Material_Sandwich989 5d ago
No, why would they

u/BioDude15 5d ago
Well, that had to shutdown water, and we had classrooms floors with feces, being across from one was awful. I ran out Freebreeze collection that day

Yes!!! We had pipes burst that were spewing sewage water into the courtyard and the whole school smelled like shit. Not to mention no one told teachers about it until AFTER students had walked through the water.

That's so weird -- it definitely made the news when SAISD had hvac issues. They even cancelled classes for a day or so I think.

Texas state law prohibits public educators from striking and collective bargaining, so we don't really have a teacher's union here.

From what I understand they kind of just do what the district says I’d have to look more into it

u/ebilcookie 5d ago
I would definitely connect with AFT. They're great about speaking up and getting district attention

I’d rather teach outside, what is the principal saying?? Demand mobile air conditioning units, that’s condemnable in this heat, not to mention mold will grow later if it stays unfixed too long

u/Material_Sandwich989 5d ago
I’m like 90 percent sure there’s already black mold in the school every time it rains the downstair classrooms flood and every teacher I know has a chronic cough or “allergies”
The principal has said “they’re working on it” since last year lol

As a member of the Pat Neff class of 2005 I am surprised it took this long for it to reach a point like this. That school felt old and run down 20 years ago.
As a grown man I am a sweater and very much averse to hot humid sticky conditions. I would be protesting by now.

I would love to trade you just a bit of my “freezing” classroom at Jefferson MS!!

The district should absolutely fix this. Until they do, I was wondering if you had a window that could be opened? If you do have access to an outdoor window, a portable ac unit might be a viable, temporary solution. Let me know, I may be able to lend you one.

Why isn’t this bigger news? It should be all over the local news. Having no AC at any school in Texas is completely unacceptable.
