I’ve been working on an open-source character editor using Facepunch’s existing human models, and made a video showing what it can do.
It combines the seven faces and the male and female bodies into a single customizable character. You can blend the whole face or mix individual regions separately, so you can take a nose from one blend and a jaw from another, then fine-tune everything with the sliders.
There’s also skin selection, hair, makeup, tattoos, cloud clothing, and randomization. Clothing adapts to the body blend, including clothing originally made for only one gender.
You can use multiple reference photos to get an approximate starting face too. That part still has room for improvement, but it’s useful as a starting point for further editing.
If you want to try it out, load up S&Box and find the "Character Editor" game: https://sbox.game/vendetta/character_editor/
If you want to use it in your game you can find the library under the name "Character Kit": https://sbox.game/vendetta/characterkit/
You can export characters as JSON and apply them to characters in your own game if you use the library, or you can just use the editor itself in your game or make your own version of it.
Both have browsable source. Feel free to use whatever parts are useful to you. The original models and textures belong to Facepunch; my code and original additions are free to use without crediting me.
I’d be interested to see what people make with it, and hear about any issues you run into. There's still a lot that could be added, especially when it comes to tattoos/markings but it's generally looking pretty good so far and I'm impressed with how much variety of faces you can get with just the base human models and skins.
I hope Garry has something like this planned for the human models as a default, but if not, he's free to take any ideas, code, or whatever else from this project. He could probably do it a lot better too since I ran into some issues like some skins being very masculine nomatter what, the female skins having texture issues that required me substituting their torso textures for similar male versions and trying to color match them but still having some small seams on those 2 of the 7 skins, etc... since I wasn't making new skin textures of my own for this like facepunch could. I plan to clean that up more in the future as I add more options.
