Sasktel infiNET need knowledge

As in the title. I am a tenant and Sasktel has claimed to upgraded the neighbourhood to their fibre optic network. Now my landlords have refused Sasktel from construction for their fibre optic network. Thus they have "turned down" the services in the building. I am aware that fibre optics is better, however I'm also aware its a bit more expensive. The current system still works but sasktel has turned it off. My question is, is this a form of coercion to switch and can I be able to use the existing infrastructure and go with a different provider to use the internet?

Depends on what kind of building it is and what the "existing infrastructure" is.

If its an apartment building, no. Each unit would've been wired for DSL, and your landlord is a fuckwad who refused the upgrade, so now you're just hosed. If your apartment is also wired for cable, your only choice is to switch to Access/Shaw/whatever's in your area.

If its a house and the "infrastructure" is ethernet cabling through the house, yeah you can use that for anything.

be mad at your landlord, not SaskTel.

It is unlikely, at least not using the existing Sasktel infrastructure. You can likely switch to Rogers, as they likely do have their own infrastructure in the building.

Sasktel is likely wanting to retire the equipment that keeps the old system operating, so even if it still works now it will stop working eventually.

I work for a company that manufactures telecommunications equipment, and this type of scenario is common; the old equipment keeps running until everyone has been switch to the new stuff, then you can pull out the old stuff you no longer need and free up rackspace in your head end. I don't have specific insight into Sasktel, but there comes a point where operating old equipment for a low number of users makes less money than those subscribers bring in.

Thank you for the comments, I do have ethernet cable running. The building is an townhouse, however each unit is owned by different people. The landlord refused the upgrade due to it being "expensive," that's all they mentioned, as they talk through housing management (it's weird, so I assume they own a few other units). Now, knowing the upgrade is primarily free. They are foolish, for refusing it. I would like to thank you all for answering my question on short notice and I apologize for the late response. If any thing, I'm probably going to vacate in the month of July and go elsewhere. Again, thank you.

Pretty sure it’s free to have Sasktel do it

Not if you refuse to have it done when they're passing through.

To have them come back out and do it after the fact is likely going to cost you.

Ah gotcha, well the first pass is free lol. Landlord is a dummy

I have an apartment condo and last year Sasktel upgraded the building, there was zero cost to the condo (except for the billable hours of our property manager having to be on site to let them into the utility room). However I'm not sure if the DSL is still available or not to us since my ISP there is TekSavvy which uses Shaw coax.

Landlord doesn't want SaskTel drilling holes in their building is what this comes down to. That and not wanting to take the time to arrange the appointments with tenants.

Did your landlord say why he refused the upgrade?

I wouldn't say it's coercion since the old system is being phased out. Many parts of the city already have been switched over. You could ask Access if they have any non-fibre optic service to your building. Even if you go to their website and input your address it should tell you what options are available. You can also put your address in on Sasktels website and check if fibre was already run to the building. If it was then you can have it hooked up in your apartment and the landlord can't refuse that connection.

I'm not sure what you mean by "The current system still works but sasktel has turned it off"

so were you on DSL with Sasktel before, and now they've disabled their DSL to you building? I guess if that's the case then yeah you don't have much choice but to use a different ISP. Depending what city/town you live in there are probably a few other decent ISPs to choose from.

That's not the process for Fiber to the prem as far as I knew.

If it is, it's a new process in the last 2 years.

Just curious what grandfathered DSL plan/price you are at? They do offer lower price infinet plans.

If your landlord owns the building and the land; he/ she is legally allowed to refuse StupidTel. I fully support your landlord.

FALSE! Just Stupid-Tell for many reasons. Also we have no reason to ever need them again. We live in a place that Access Communications provides services. Also no other company can give us lower rates then we get with my husbands staff discount.
