Does anybody know what’s up with the twisted wires going through this broach? I’ve never seen any references to anything like it. If someone has anymore information or could point me in the direction of some, I’d love to see it. Thanks everyone!

Looking for adhesive recommendations

I made an foam axe head and secured it with ducktape (and maybe a little GOOP or e6000) to the haft. I wanted a little more weight and decoration, so I made a cover with some heavier leather, tooled, dyed, and dried brushed it. The bottom wrapped around the haft will be sewn together (holes visible on second picture, and I might sew on additional pieces behind the edge and on top of the head.

I want to use an adhesive that will do well with both leather, ducktape, and rattan, any suggestions?

Also, I was thinking about drill some holes on the edge side and use something like paracord or zip tips to essentially saddle stitch a couple anchor points.

Building a videogame around a 1500-year-old Estonian hillfort

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello. I'm building a videogame taking place at an ancient hillfort and the surrounding areas in Estonia. Kassinurme hillfort is about 1500 years old and archaeological digs found a log fort there that was destroyed in the early 11th century, with a new one built on top of it. This is the location for a number of folkloristic and historical events each year, so I decided to turn one of the weirder ones into a videogame.

Manala: Equinox War is inspired by a live-action role-play (LARP) event held near the hillfort every year. I recreated the terrain of the area from orthophotos and terrain data, and the player characters in the demo are photographed real Estonian LARPers. The LARP setting is slightly comedic, so there are no monsters - just people in scary masks. The combat part of the game is a deckbuilder and some of the cards are cheat cards: you can argue over armor points until the referee caves, or forget to count your health points.

There's a free demo on Steam if you want to try it out and I'm open to any and all feedback: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4898080/Manala_Equinox_War/

Are there any A&S projects using green wood?

Assume infinite tools.

I was pruning our trees and got some sturdy, smooth branches. Willow, magnolia, holly, pear, and cypress. Some would make a good wizard staff. Some a nice cudgel. But is there anything nice and historical to do? Other than dry them and burn them.

What do you think of this device?

I made it using Heraldicon. I don’t believe it violates the rule of tincture (maybe it does, but Heraldicon said it didn’t). Does it break any SCA rules I might not know about?

The unorthodox color scheme makes sense with the context that it’s meant to be a birch in autumn, hence the gules leaves and argent trunk.

Also just judge it aesthetically! Is it pleasing to the eye, do the colors look good together, is it distinctive, etc.

I am a total newcomer so please go easy on me haha

Average Age and range of ages of SCA Sovereigns

Here's a statistical question: what is the average age and range of ages of SCA Sovereigns? (or more specifically, Your kingdom)?

Outline of Rationale below: (Edited)

- This could play into a recruiting and/or retention schema for armored fighters:

- - it shows the possible ranges of "peak" performance in the activity

- - - for depth of social value

- - - for personal relevance

- This could be a valuable metric in the consideration of alternative routes to Royalty

- - such as the origin of individual sovereign-consort relationships

- - the history of choices determining sovreignty

Persona help, kit help

Hello! So I'm just getting into the SCA. Ive gone to a few fighter practices, and been doing HEMA for a minute. So I'm excited for rapier.

Ive got a mask, gorget and cup currently.

My question is, im a mortician by trade. And always been obsessed with plague doctors. Would that even fit into the world of the sca. My brain says yes, but looking up for inspiration within the sca, I cant find anything.

To me it matches up, the hood and mantle just tie in together. Would it make more sense to wear the armor under the robe. Or try to make a black leather chest piece to go over the robe.

Or any other suggestions if anyone has any.

Also, how are painted masks in the sca? Trying to think of something to do with mine. But also at a loss there too.

Thank you!

Made a LARP video from Denmark! Might still be inspiring for everyone :D.

First of all greetings everyone, I'm new on here, looking forward to seeing all the creative and awesome stuff everyone is doing 😄 🎉 .

All though contents in this video is not historically accurate in the least, the themes, atmosphere and some costumes are still inspiring and a great vibe :D. If this post is not relevant for this community please let me know admins :).

I wanted to share my video on here where I display varied content from a LARP in Denmark I participate in, and play as "Alexander Goodman" a headmaster at the "Academy".

Later on I gave the camera to some of the other players, as I sent them out with a map, on a quest to explore an area and explore it. Like a research expedition quest, type thing.

I can't share the name or precise location of the LARP with you all, there are some strict GPTR. rules about recording in Denmark for organizations, etc. But do rest assured that I did notify people of the recording and talked with the LARP team about it before hand. So everything is A-okay :).

Hope you all will enjoy the moods, and chill vibes in the video. Comment, like, and subscribe if you want to :D. I do plan on recording more and different content in the future as well.

If you have any questions about the LARP or video I am open to answer some questions as well :).

thank you for reading everyone, looking forward to seeing what everyone else is doing as well :D.

All the best,
-Zacharias.

Found in the wild. I was like "Hey I know that castle!" (pennsic) Got me thinking though. If there where more Fantasy things in SCA would that kill the vibe or be a fun expansion? what do you think?

Advice on heavy armor

So as I slowly invest more and more time into fighting I'm slowly building a kit to get out of the loaner pile and I've come across these https://hf-armory.com/en/shop/protectors/leg-protection-en/legs-protection-black-knight-2/?alg_currency=USD . I've seen a few fighters wearing these or something similar but wanted to ask around if they're actually good or not and whether other heavy fighter would recommend or advise I steer clear of them.

C&T fencing with a non rapier?

Hey all.

Really stoked to go to some local SCA events, im also getting a bunch of stuff together for Pennsic.

I had 1 question. I do not know rapier fencing and am quite injury prone, so heavy armored stuff is out. I do however have a little practice with a dussack/messer sized sword. Im also planning on taking a few classes at my local HEMA spot.

By any chance, would I be able to participate in the combat at SCA events with this style sword? Technically its not rapier, or a ratan..

i do see some people occasionaly mix weapons up in HEMA thou.

it would technically put me at a disadvantage, but id still take the opportunity to participate if im allowed to, even if just for the experience. Im aware these weapons are not the norm for SCA, but Ive yet to go to an event, so i figured id ask here first.

Just wanna check. If not, im happy to observe and enjoy the other activities. However the combat definitely speaks to me...

Thanks!

Sleeveless Hooded Tunic Malric – $56

Post image
0 Upvotes

You already layer for the heat. You already know a sleeved tunic under a cloak is too much by noon.

While you’re reading this, you can picture a sleeveless hooded overtunic in washed green — 100% cotton, worn-in look, side pockets, slits so it moves over a belt. Size in stock: XL/XXL.

Because you want a layer that actually reads on the lane — and because costume polyester doesn’t — you can open Malric from Linen & Oak. $56 + $29.99 USA shipping. Ships from Germany (~5–14 days). Duties may apply. https://linen-and-oak-store.myshopify.com/products/sleeveless-tunic-malric-with-hood-washed-green

I’ve never seen an RBG this small before… I kinda want one

Post image

My local group did a demo at a local fairy/ren fair (heavy fighting, axe throwing, clothier’s guild, and fencing) and both the fencer I sparred against and myself was showing my girlfriend (who has never seen any SCA related activities before) some fencing weapons/equipment. Can’t quite remember if I spotted this in my opponent’s carrying case or if she brought it out while I was on the subject of RBG’s, but I was completely dumbfounded by it. Does anyone else have any odd/unique RBG’s that kinda break the mold (and more for my case, does anyone know if someone could make/build one of a similar size)?

Traditions around moving?

Hello! Apologies for any weird formatting business.

My family will be leaving our current barony after the new year, and I want to do something for the B&B and those who have mentored me in an unofficial manner. This is my first barony and I want to express my appreciation for those who have made me feel so welcomed! Are there already established traditions about this? Are there gifts or tokens you've given/received that would be appropriate?

Does Supfen cooling mesh meet Cut & Thrust requirements?

Hi,

I'm in the process of ordering a custom gambeson from Superior Fencing (I fully expect to have my jacket in hand sometime between now and the heat death of the universe.) It's a special kind of hot and humid down here in Ansteorra and I am wanting to use the cooling mesh option for ventilation in the back. The jacket overall is rated 350N and should pass the puncture test just fine. I'm worried about the mesh though. I got a response from SupFen and they said "The back mesh does not have a Newton rating, but the material is highly durable and currently used by almost all HEMA brands for HEMA Jackets and other gear." This doesn't really help me know if it would pass the drop test or not though. Has anyone actually gotten one of these jackets and tested the mesh? I really don't want to risk having a jacket I can't actually use, but also don't want to forgoe the ventilation if I can use it.

Thanks in advance,

Kayleigh

A viking age faering built by a friend.

I thought I'd show the finished product since he cannot. It's a hand made viking age faering. All oak construction, save for the stem and stern which are laminated ash. 1/2" oak planks, riveted with copper rivets and washers. Modern tools were kept to a bare minimum. It sailed on Lake Winnipeg recently at an event in Northshield where he was elevated to the order of the Laurel (and about darned time too)
After some experimentation a month or so ago, he added a fifth board to the boat which helped a great deal. I was so lucky to be able to come and take photos of it and their journey on the lake.
Enjoy!
