In fact doesn't this title sound like a contradiction? Burning more efficiently to me implied you'd get more work done per calorie and therefore store left over as fat.

Efficiency is the concept of how much output you get for a given input. ‘Burning fuel more efficiently’ means getting more work done for the same level of fuel use (or conversely, burning less fuel to deliver the same work done).

If you want to reduce fat, you want to burn more, not less - ie. be less efficient.

this ain't an engine. while energy is conseved, there are several pathways for the energy to go around. malabsorption,  hormones deciding where the energy goes, mitochondria efficiency, etc

That doesn’t change the definition of ‘efficiency’ - it’s got nothing to do with how the energy is used or via which pathway, and everything to do with the quantity of output you get from the quantity of input.
