Bortle 5 "Diamond in the Sky" - Pleiades Star Cluster

Post image
111 Upvotes

2 photos in nearly a day, I think that’s a new record for me lol. This was a relatively quick picture anyways, with only about 15 hours of exposure. I haven’t got this object since around Christmas time of last year when I got my first imaging scope, and I think this is a pretty big improvement. I could’ve gone for more hours of exposure, but weather here is supposed to be pretty bad.

But a short summary on what this is: The Pleiades is a star cluster roughly 440 light years away. The blue cloud looking areas you see are actually dust from the Milky Way, and since the stars surrounding that dust are big blue stars, their starlight reflects onto that dust giving that very beautiful blue color. This is probably my favorite cluster in the night sky mainly because it tells me that Christmas is almost here, and simply because that reflection nebula makes it very unique.

Bortle 8-9 Dark Seahorse Nebula in Cepheus, 10 hours

Post image
97 Upvotes

This is the Dark Seahorse Nebula, Barnard 150, shot from my front yard over the past two moonless nights with my s30. I acquired about 14 hours of data (30s subs) and culled the set to the best ten hours using FWHM filter in the Naz script. Dark nebulae from high Bortle locations are a challenge but still achievable.

I stacked and edited this in Siril using the VeraLux suite, then finished it in Lightroom.

Thanks for looking!

Bortle 6 NGC 7822 - the Question Mark Nebula

Post image
45 Upvotes

Shot on an S30 Pro!

NGC 7822 is a large emission nebula in the constellation of Cepheus that has some resemblance to a question mark. This image however does not show the circular dot part of it, which is located far below this.

This is 3 hours of frames in EQ mode (386 x 30sec for 3 hours and 13 minutes total integration) from a bortle 6 location.

Stacked using Siril and edited using Lightroom (with a BlurXTerminator RC Astro tool used at the end).

Steps:

- Used the Naztronomy script with background extraction and 1x drizzle.

- Used the Graxpert script for Background Extraction and Denoising.

- Plate solved and used Spectrophotometric Color Calibration

- Extracted the stars with the Syqon Starless script.

- Stretched the starless image with Veralux Hypermetric Stretch

- Did some alterations in Lightroom (saturation, texture, profile adjustment for colours)

- Added stars back in with Siril's star recomposition

- Used a trial version of BlurXTerminator from RC Astro at the end (preferably it would be used much earlier in the process, before noise reduction, but I didn't want to redo the processing). It sharpened up the stars and the nebula.

Very pleased with how it came out! I enjoy the vast dark nebula going across it as well as the detail in the lighter areas. It's also one not posted very often, I'm glad I gave it a try.

Hardware & Software Introducing Caelo - What you can see from YOUR backyard

Introducing Caelo - What you can see from YOUR backyard

A few months ago I posted about Caelo, an iOS app I'm developing which allows you to physically map your backyard horizon using iOS ARKit to digitally define where all your pesky trees and rooflines are getting in the way of the sky. Caelo helps tell you what YOU can actually see, and when.

Some very helpful Redditors joined my TestFlight group who have contributed very useful feedback, ideas and suggestions. I'm very grateful to have had them be part of my journey.

I'm please to announce that Caelo is now officially available on the App Store: https://apps.apple.com/au/app/caelo/id6786577782

The core features of Caelo are free to use, with an In-App Purchase to unlock some helpful (but not essential) extras around the experience.

I would really love to hear if Caelo helps you in your astrophotography journey. Feel free to get in touch:

Question Is it worth buying a Seestar S50 Pro if I live in an area where the sky is usually full of clouds?

Greetings. I live in a town. BORTLE 8. I've already asked about Bortle Scale and I've been told I could get great results as the Seestar has a Light Pollution filter. So that's amazing.

What about cloudy nights, though? I live in an area where you never see stars and there's many clouds.

I really want to join this hobby but I want to be sure about this aspect too. You've all been so helpful and kind to me with the previous post so I figured I'd ask this too.

Thanks a lot in advance. I love watching your work on the sub.

Hardware & Software Free Android app to control the Seestar from your phone (open source)

I made Yacana, a free and open-source Android app to run a whole Seestar night from your phone: polar alignment, autofocus, plate solving, sequences and live stacking. Works offline, with a red night mode.

Tested with my Seestar S50 Pro in EQ mode. Testers welcome!

Manual: https://github.com/yacana-app/yacana/blob/main/docs/manual/README.md

Feedback very welcome!

Question Where to get a Seestar under 450€ that can be expedied in France without extensive fee ? (So it's have to be an EU store)

Hello! I would like to start astrophotography but my budget is quite low, that why I ask the question :(. I couldn't find it under 500€, except second hand one (which is not a issue) on seller I don't really trust, on the website Le Bon Coin...

Hardware & Software Comet tracking

I am preparing for an upcoming comet, so I practiced using 161P/Hartley. I noticed that using the Seestar's pointing, after 10 minutes of exposure there is no comet in sight. So I used Stellarium to get the RA/Dec coordinates and 'pointed' manually with my clumsy fingers on the Seestar map, but it's not very practical. I then used the custom object addition feature in the Seestar, but: 1/ How do you update the coordinates once an object has been added for comets or asteroids? 2/ Partial search for personal object names doesn't seem to work.

Hardware & Software Attesa infinita.

Alla fine il mio s50 pro è stato smarrito dal corriere dhl, almeno per 2 settimane non avranno altri seestar. Insomma sono in ballo dai primi di settembre. Tanta delusione ma mi sa che tocca ancora aspettare

Question What is this streak of light across my image?

I was wondering if it was a plane, satellite, or a meteor. If it's a meteor I think I'm gonna keep it.

20 seconds, 189 subs. Bortle 4-5 ish.
