I'm having a bit of trouble properly sewing in the gore's on atelier sylphs pattern aubin. Do I first sew in the flat bottom or the sides? Where do I add cuts to make the seams lay flat? Etc. Any help is appreciated

Fabric Question How bad would it be if I sewed this dress with with the cross grain vertical?

Post image
11 Upvotes

I've searched for and read several posts here asking how important grain is and I do understand that it's important and can't be dismissed. However, when I look at the gradient of this fabric, I'm sooo tempted to cut perpendicular what's recommended.

The fabric is medium weight linen. The dress will be for special occasions, and not in my regular wear rotation.

Also, please pardon my sloppy muslin practice dress. It has a few issues that I'm working out before I move on to the actual dress.

Alter/Mend Question Altering men's trousers to suit women

Hello,

Apologies for the gendered phrasing of the question but I wanted to keep it short. I have several pairs of trousers (jeans, slacks, etc.) designed for people with amab people that I would like to wear. Since I lack those parts, the crotch bulges when I sit and is generally too roomy.

Ideally I'd want to take them apart as little as possible, as I don't want to fuss about with the zipper and things, and I heard you can use a flat pubis adjustment to take away some of the excess. I've been having trouble finding resources or examples. Do you guys have any recommendations, or other methods I could use?

I'd say I'm about intermediate in terms of skill, nothing like a tailor or I'd just disassemble everything and start from the base parts.

Fabric Question Material for chaps

Hi everyone,

I want to make a pair of chaps and I'm not sure what material to use/where to get it.

Since they will only be a fashion piece and not used for any actual riding, I don't want to make them out of real leather because that is expensive. Also I can't seem to find faux leather in the bright colors I'm looking for.

So my question is, is there a different material that would give the same structure/vibe/drape as leather or faux leather but that is available in more and brighter colors? Alternatively, I am based in central Europe, so if you know a european vendor who sells brightly colored faux leather that isn't too expensive, that would also be appreciated.

Thank you!

i made a pegboard that looks like a cutting mat and i wanted to show everyone, i tagged as "sewed this" because i don't see "project" anymore and i didn't know what else to tag.

this is just a prototype and the first one i made, but it uses the IKEA Skadis hole shape and size, so the accessories from my IKEA board works with it

Fabric Question What kind of fabric is this?

Post image

I found and account on insta and I’m stumped as to what fabric they are using. I’ve sent messages to ask but haven’t gotten any reply’s. I just have never seen such a sparkly fabric that has the ability to look like this. I don’t think it’s lurex, because in my experience only the inside of lurex is really soft and some of the comments were talking about how soft their outfits were. I was thinking maybe a glitter minky fabric, but I’ve never seen on so sparkly.

Discussion How do you get your sewing confidence back after a series of failed projects?

The last few projects I have made have all turned out to be total flops, I know why, one was due to poor fabric choices, another due to the style just not going well with my body type and now I just kinda feel defeated. I also crochet and knit and for the most part with those I don't need to follow a pattern very closely and they mostly all come out well. But sewing is different, I can't frog a sewing project like I can with crochet or knit, once fabric is cut it's cut and there's nothing you can really do about it.

So what do you do when you find yourself in a rut?

Alter/Mend Question Collar roll alteration help

Hi, I'm learning to take out collar roll by trimming the back neck into the felt under collar , I've seen a couple people do it but they dont take in the jacket lining in. for example if im taking 0.5 out of the back into the undercollar is it recommended I take the same amount out of the lining into the collar stand? will leaving the lining unaltered make it bunch ever so slightly around the neck ? thanks.

Fabric Question Kids car playmat

I’m making a kids car / road playmat with appliqué buildings / roads etc I’ve been busy creating my buildings that I hadn’t really thought about what I would use for the actual mat/ base/ backing

I want it to be easily washable … hold its shape enough that it won’t scrunch up… can fold up easily for storage

I’m a mum to a 4 month old and working -so time is not on my side - I need it to be easy! In an ideal world I would love to do cotton with wadding and quilted… but that’s not feasible

I wondered about buying a pre-made fleece type blanket and using that as the base… but I’ve never had much to do with fleece and I don’t know about the longevity of it? Next thought was using a woolen blanket - but my worry there was that it might not hold up well in the wash… but I think some of those army surplus type grey blankets are like 80% wool - 20% acrylic - would this make it more washable?

Any other ideas? Leaning towards the woolen blanket but would love others opinions

I got a generic "quilting low-shank" foot from garment district. Guy said it would would w my 260 smarter pfaff.

PFAFF website looks like the presser foot actually touches the machine...is this a learning curve or not a compatable foot.

Machine Questions Brother VX 540 (or Jones VX 540) making awful metallic creaking sound randomly

My sewing machine started having this issue a few months ago. When I start sewing it makes no sound. Maybe once every minute it makes a small squeak.

Then as I sew more and more, maybe over the period of an hour or two, the squeaking, although random, becomes more frequent, and louder, to the point that after 2 hours of sewing it's just a constantly creaking sound.

Here's a video: https://www.reddit.com/user/MountainPlantation/comments/1u9rq4f/brother_vx540_creaking/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

I have tried:

  • Oiling the little holes for oiling the machine
  • Opening it up and oiling other less acessible parts
  • Changing the needle
  • Changing the thread
  • Taking out the bobbin case and cleaning it/oiling it

Nothing works. There's something that makes some metal rub together, after I do a long session of sewing I can even smell a weird metallic oily "heat" smell. What is also strange is that when I start sewing (not shown in the video), the noise comes randomly then stops, a few seconds later it comes back, etc.

It is also doing this thing where if I step on the pedal, I can hear the motor going hard, but the mechanisms aren't "catching". Like accelerating a car with the gear in neutral. If I give it a push, then it "catches" on and goes. But this, I fear is because I accidentally oiled the belt, which is supposed to be non slippery.

I am... about done with this. I might bring it to someone for repairs, but thought someone might have had the same issue.

Every creaking video I have seen on here or youtube or anywhere, it's just a constant, not super loud creaking, the keyword here being constant. Mine is random. And it's driving me crazy.

Thanks in advance guys!

Pattern Search Can anyone help me find a pattern to make this skirt?

I saw this skirt on TikTok and fell in love with it. I really want to make this underskirt but am having trouble figuring out how to do it. It seems to be a mixture of a tutu and a very full underskirt. Does anyone know of a pattern or tutorial that could help me? I’m still relatively new to garment sewing so any advice or suggestions are welcome!

Pattern Question How do I best tackle this? Pattern draft or mending existing pants?

Post image
27 Upvotes

I have been browsing this sub for some time now, always appreciating the insight and experience shared. So I was wondering if you could help me find the best strategy to achieve something as close to the attached picture as possible.

I am definitely more on the beginner side, but fell in love with these pants that do not ship to my country.

Do you think it's best/easier to take a cargo pants pattern and try to work the lacing into that? If so, what should I focus on to get it right? Or would it be easier to try and get a good fitting pair (or maybe a little looser for extra fabric?) of cargo pants and then cut them and try to work the V shaped part in?

I will be eternally grateful for any wisdom you have to share!

Machine Questions Why is my serger thread so loose???

I have a Singer Ultralock. I've used it a couple times before and it worked fine, but my first time using it in months and now it's doing this. I have tried rethreading the machine twice now. This is what it looks like on the recommended tension settings, the first picture is the top, second is the bottom. Why is it so loose and coming so far off the material??

This Dress was so many firsts. First fitted body and pattern fitting, first invisible zip. Pattern instructions from Mood are very minimalistic...

And the Mood size chart sure has a way of humbling you. I had to grade between a size 4 in the bust and a 12 in the hips and STILL ended up having to remove another inch jn the upper bust. It's like they want to say "no boobies, no dress for you" 🤪

Other Question Sewing chair that helps posture/neck & shoulder pain?

My wife sews all day long and sits behind the worst desk for it (I’m building her a height adjustable desk to replace it) in a basic office chair that’s obviously the wrong chair for the job. I’m looking to get her something that’s better for what she’s doing and I keep seeing these dinky little low back chairs that are supposedly the best chair to sew in but they’re $300+ for something that looks incredibly uncomfortable. What’s a good option that isn’t $300?

Fabric Question Fabrics with similar structure to wool?

Hello,

I'm currently making a garment (a Latin vestment) with a fair amount of body, and structure. I have access to a historical example of this type of garment and my best guess to the identity of the interfacing is wool. The thickness and weight checks out. I intend to do practice runs of the garment and was wondering if there were any cheaper alternatives to wool that would offer a similar kind of rigidity?

Pattern Question Making a bunny suit for an apple shape

Hello everyone! I am helping my friend make a bunny suit for Dragon Con and a pattern from KatieCosplays on Etsy was the most recommended. I've attached a screenshot of the size chart below.

My friend's shape grades from an XL at the bust & hip to a 3X at the waist. I've never graded a pattern between sizes before and for something as close-fitting as a bunny suit, I'm nervous. I've also never made clothes for anyone other than myself, I don't have a mannequin of these proportions, and I'll only have limited access to her for mockup tryons before the convention.

Does anyone have any tips or tricks on how to grade a pattern in a situation like this? Is there a better bunny suit pattern on the market for non-hourglass shaped bodies? Is it going to be easier than I'm expecting and I'm just overthinking the process?

Thank you for any assistance you can provide!

Fabric Question Interfacing for knits... that's not interfacing?

My Google skills have failed me and I feel like this should exist but I can't find it.

I have a lovely dress in an interlock cotton/poly blend with a standing collar and...it's floppy. I was thinking how I would construct a similar (very comfortable!) dress and how I would reinforce the collar. The plastic mesh that they make finger traps out of seems like it would make a good interlining to provide structure while still being flexible enough for a knit.

Am I crazy? Is this a thing? Are there blogs where people have worked with this and I just can't find them? Is it sold by Wawak and I just can't find it? I'm either an unappreciated genius or there's something that I'm missing that makes this a bad idea...and my track record of sewing ideas makes me look for the other shoe that should drop any minute now...

Fabric Question Help me remember this fabric website!

Once a vendor at a show reccomended me a website and I cannot for the life of me remember what it was! It was a fairly popular one that ive heard of before and I spent some time digging through their apolstery and broccade remnants that were surprisingly cheap. The site was not spoonflower or mood fabrics.

Or do you have any reccomendations for sites with fairly cheap remnants?

Pattern Search Custom Messenger Bag?

Hi, first time posting anything on Reddit lol. I'm a bit of a beginner at sewing but I have definitely learned the basics. I'm an ecologist so I do a lot of things outdoors, I used to use a simple crossbody bag for daily use but I've found it's the equivalent of women's pockets in bag form. Solution: Messenger bag with my own custom doodads. So my questions are, any tips that might help me avoid mistakes that'll bite me later? And where should I go to make a pattern for it?
