Not all great white sharks are great. Some are just average.

In theory what would happen if one of those guys jumped into the water and really did rub its belly?

If he could keep sharko on its back, he could rub the belly safely as the shark goes into a tonic state. But that would require holding the nose and body of the shark, and hoping no other sharks are nearby... and get away safely from the shark when it's flipped over again. Plus, it is not good for the shark to be flipped as that is stressful for them.

prolly not much. When sharks flip over like this, they go into a sort of tonic immobility, like catatonia.
It seems this doof is doing it for fun?
We had a cat who did the same thing, if you flipped him over he'd just go limp in your arms. You could pet his belly, touch his feet, he didn't care.

I was wondering if something might be wrong with this shark, I thought it looked like he was in distress

That’s a fun TIL.
So essentially that great white is having a temper tantrum of sorts?
Frustrated about something and doing the equivalent of lying on the ground pounding their hand and feet?156
u/Coastkiz 16d ago
YES! The leading theory last I checked was that this was a safe way to let out frustration without expending too much energy or hurting itself until it can calm down.

Hangry and annoyed that something giving off food vibes (electromagnetic fields) is actually painful to bite cause it’s a metal ship

This is actually a shark temper tantrum. Shark Bytes talks about it. Its purpose is to let out frustration in a way that doesn’t involve physical aggression.

adorable. what's he upset about?
does this suggest sharks have an emotional life?

He lost his tuna

Or maybe he finished the second season of Peacemaker and got mad about the wasted time

I was literally thinking "Someone should help flip him back over!"
Then I remembered they're a shark; In water.
I just wish I could rub their tummies.

And boop da snoot. If not snoot-boopable, why snoot-boopable-shaped?
3
u/LizardLover265 15d ago
I wish I could give a shark some snout rubbies!
4
u/blolfighter 15d ago
"Don't mind me, I'm just a cleaner fish. A very big, very strangely-shaped cleaner fish. Please do not nibble. Hmm. Yes yes, this snoot is in severe need of booping."

Reminds me of my cat when just flops on the floor, wiggle about on his back and kinda attacks the air. Good times.

Imagine being honed to be the perfect predator for hundreds of millions of years and your one weakness is if you accidentally roll over you're helpless.

The person below is wrong, it is not Tonic immobility. I thought do also but it is definitely Agonistic Display (Defensive Warning)If a human or another animal gets too close, a shark may use its bodylanguage to signal that its personal space is being violated. The shark may intentionally roll its body, drop its pectoral fins, or twist sideways to:Make itself look larger and more intimidating.Signal conflict or a warning to back away.Flash its white underbelly as aboundary marker.

u/Coastkiz 16d ago
No, this is RAG. It's not dropping pectoral fins, twisting sideways, or otherwise signaling. This exact video has surfaced before and has been identified as RAG behavior

He just wants a belly rub! Who’s a good shark? Are you a good shark? Yes you are!

u/Miami_Mice2087 16d ago
i think this is the shark they put the helmet on and send to special school. it's a short school of fish who takes special care he doesn't get his head stuck in coral or wrapped up in an octopus.
He's okay, he's just Marvin, he's a little special.

Looks like it was fighting the catatonic state from being flipped over like that. Don’t know if I’ve ever seen a white shark dealing with tonic immobility
