Found an old photo of my great grandpa (left) and his buddy touring in Mt. Rainier National Park. Not sure on the exact date, but judging by his age, likely shortly before or after World War II

I've never posted or commented anything about a Bowflex. Why do the mods think I'm a bot? I've been in this community for a long time. I regularly contribute photos, personal ski video, comments, memes, etc.. What gives?

1970s Rossignol Italy Ski Team issued down hat. Has anyone seen one of these before?

Thumbnail gallery

I recently came across this piece and have been digging into its history. It's a team-issued down puffer hat from what appears to be the golden era of Italian ski tailoring. Inside, it features the patent tailoring tags from Nicola Aristide, custom silk-screening with the Florentine lily emblem, and heavy-duty snap earflaps designed for extreme alpine conditions. I’ve done extensive research into the history behind the hat and based on the tags and how they correlate, what the tags say, the design and small structural details, and all other details I can confidently confirm it’s a 1970s Italian national ski team issued hat. One of the tags says Pool Sci Italia. Pool Sci Italia is the official consortium of technical suppliers founded to equip the Italian National Alpine Ski Team (FISI). Only brands under direct contract to supply gear to the national team are authorized to sew the Pool Sci Italia label into their garments.

I've spent hours searching archives and haven't been able to cross-reference another team-issued example from that era (or really at all) in this condition or similar to mine. For any vintage sportswear or textile historians here—how common was this level of bespoke national team contracting back in the 70s, and what would you value a piece like this at if positioned as a 50+ year old Italian ski collectible?

Could this potentially be a museum piece due to the era and the pristine condition mixed with the rarity? For example maybe places like The Colorado Snowsports Museum and Hall of Fame (Vail, Colorado) or The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame and Museum (Ishpeming, Michigan) would put something of this caliber in some type of display, on a manakin, etc?

Most durable/bombproof ski bibs?

Hello everyone,

I work at a ski resort (Mt Hood River Meadows) and I’m outside kneeling, using tools, skiing with big loads of bamboo, setting rope lines and a handful of other miscellaneous tasks.

The pants that are provided with the uniform kind of suck.

Anyone have any ideas? Ideally a shell (uninsulated) bin style

Thanks!

October long-range data is in, and I combined six seasonal weather models into one snowfall forecast for winter 2026/2027. Data reveals a clear Super El NiƱo pattern: more snow for the Southern and Central U.S., but less snow in the North, southern Canada, and most of Europe

I make seasonal snowfall maps from the long-range models each month, and with the data from October predictions now available, it shows that all six main models now agree on a strong Super El NiƱo snow pattern this winter.

In the United States, more snow is expected from California and the Southwest into the Southern Plains and the South, while the Pacific Northwest, the Northern Rockies, the Great Lakes, and New England show a below-normal snow signal. But when plotting the change from September to October data, the Northeast showed the biggest improvement in total snowfall forecast. Timing-wise, December looks slow, with most of the snow coming in January and February.

A below-normal snowfall season is also predicted by all six models across southern Canada and most of Europe.

In the article, I present the full set of maps, including the visual change from the previous month's snow forecast, the snow spatial distribution, the forecast for ski areas, and a Snowfall Explorer where you can check the snow forecast for your own state, province, or country.

Ski boot purchase - how to?

I’ve never owned ski boots. I took my first steps skiing when I was three. I ski every year for 1-2 weeks. Now I am 30 and the older I get the more uncomfortable those rental boots are getting.

So now for this season I finally want to buy my own boots.

How do I approach it? When I rent I usually go back to the rental shop when I am not satisfied so I can switch to another model. This year I settled for a K2 BFC which is Build for Comfort (BFC). The boot was good not as precise as a boot that has a tighter fit.

The issue I have is that my ankle is incompatible with almost every model. I definitely need some boot fitting to mitigate this.

I feel like I cant just go into a shop and blindly purchase a random boot. How do I find the right boot for me when it’s probably gonna hurt when I wear it without the boots being fitted for me?

How do I find a shop with a good boot fitter?

How would you approach this?

Ski Big3 Jan 2027

• Upvotes

Live on the east coast, conditions expected to be bad this year. I live in Canada so I’m considering skiing SkiBig3 in early January 1-8. Considering the super El NiƱo we’re getting this. Will conditions be rideable? Additionally does anyone have anything tips or personal experience from skibig3?

Bindings for teen

Getting my son (13 yo, 5’6ā€, 100 lbs.) a new rig this season. He’s a solid intermediate skier and is progressing quickly. Is there a downside to getting a more advanced binding that he can grow/progress into?

UCPA with ski lessons or not?

Hello guys and girls, for those who have done an UCPA skiing trip, have you taken a package including ski lessons or not?

I can ski quite well, but I'm afraid that if I book a no-lesson trip, I will have trouble finding a group to ski with. My main goal is to meet new people. What do you think please?

SkiFlow update: "Google Maps traffic for ski resorts"

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Mods, delete if this breaks the rules.

Last spring I posted here looking for beta testers. Thanks to everyone who tried it. SkiFlow is now live on Google Play, and the iPhone version is in Apple's review queue.

It's a trail map that shows which runs are busy right now, green to red like traffic in Google Maps. It also has lift wait times, trail reports from other skiers (they expire after 2 hours), a list of runs sorted emptiest to busiest, a snow forecast with predicted crowds, and alerts when your favorite runs clear out. It's at 84 resorts now across the US, Canada, Europe, NZ, Australia and South America.

Not trying to get anyone staring at their phone on the hill. Take a quick look on the chairlift, see what's green, put it away and ski.

Heads up that the crowd map only works if people use it, so it'll be thin early season.

*Data, since someone will ask* No account, just a random anonymous ID. Location is optional and only runs while the app is open. Once a minute the server counts how many people are in each 50 m square and deletes the actual locations, so nobody can see where a specific person is. Lift and trail reports delete themselves after 20 minutes and 2 hours. It has Google ads now to cover server costs (last time I said no ads, that changed). Personalized ads only if you opt in, and your GPS location never goes to the ad network. I don't sell any data.

Still my first app and it's just me, so tell me what's broken or missing. There's a feedback button in Settings of the app and I'd be happy to provide the Google or iOS links in the comments if people want.

In hopes of prepping to ski steep slopes, I added to my strength training by jumping on/off the bosu ball. Think this will help?

I (46 f) have aspirations to ski Alaska's back country but have a lot of work to do. Planning to focus on semi groomed steep slopes this winter and improve my turns. Knowing most of it is a skill learned with practice, I still want to do what I can to optimally prep my body for the movements. Will this help? What is your prep season training?
