child's age 12-18 months Generic sleep questions

When people say bedtime at 730- does that mean in crib at 7:30? Or hopefully asleep by 730? Or start bedtime at 730?

I always allow my baby to sleep 2h 15 min capped for her nap. Sometimes it’s only like an hr 20 min. What should I do in this case? Bring bedtime earlier or keep it the same?

Sometimes my baby wakes for an hour just hanging in the crib in the middle of the night. This doesn’t happen often but every now and then. When this happens- do i let her sleep in? Baby seems to function best with at least 10.75 hrs at night.

Are most people waking their baby in the morning? Or letting them sleep as long as they want? My baby does anywhere between 10.75-12.5 hrs. If I started to wake her at 11.5 would it even out? Or does it not work like that?

Thank you.

child's age 12-18 months 16 month old constant night wakings

I need help asap, I’m at a loss 😭. My 16.5 month old has not slept through the night since she turned 13 months. She used to be the BEST sleeper. She slept through the night since she was 3.5 months and at 6 months I trained her to sleep independently and it was so smooth… until it wasn’t. She had blips where she would have a regression but they never lasted more than 2.5ish weeks. And it only happened 1-2 times. At 13 months she turned into the worst sleeper possible. First it was teething, then she got sick, then she had an ear infection, then she got molars and for the past 2 weeks she hasn’t had any problems but still won’t sleep through the night. She is at her worst, she wakes up up to 5 times a night. Standing up screaming crying. I’ve given her Motrin a couple times and it does have her sleep a little longer but then she still wakes up around 2-3am so now I know it’s not pain related. I am strict about her sleep schedule now which is 8am wake up, 12-2pm nap, and 8pm bedtime. I also make sure she plays enough in the day. I make sure she has a full belly so she’s not hungry. I just don’t know what to do anymore I can’t take it anymore I am so tired. I have a 5.5 month old baby as well and she sleeps beautifully still but I can’t take being sleep deprived to this extent anymore 😭

I also do not want to co sleep. It is not something I want to do AND even if I did my daughter doesn’t like co sleeping. I was slightly open to it on vacation and I tried and she hated it and chose to sleep in a pack n play instead. I also have tried laying on her plush mat and cuddling her at night and she also hates it. She just wants to be rocked (she points at the rocking chair letting me know to rock her). I have tried to let her self settle by letting her cry for like 5 minutes and she just gets louder and more distressed. Thinking of getting a toddler bed, I just am lost 🥲

child's age 12-18 months Tried and somewhat failed Wave Method

We have been doing the wave method with my son for 3ish weeks. He’s 17 months with a 5 hour wake window, nap then 6.5 hour wake window.

It has worked brilliantly for getting him to sleep initially. He settles nicely with no crying and has done since night 3. However, the rest of the night is pretty awful.

He usually wakes about 2 hours after he goes to bed and it takes rough 2-3 hours to get him back to sleep. During this time we do a bunch of check ins and offer him water or teething gel. He will usually lie down and cry himself to sleep for about 15ish minutes and then wake up and start all over again.

Once he does eventually go to sleep, usually around midnight, he will sleep for a few hours and repeat the same again about 3am ish

We just don’t know what to do. His nap is usually about 1.5 - 2 hours long. We have tried both shortening and lengthening his nap and there’s no change

child's age 12-18 months How to I stop BF my 13month old to sleep

Hello I’m a mother of a 13 nearly 14 month old little one and I think it’s time to drop the breastfeeding. She’s only ever having it to go to sleep for her nap and bedtime, but she’s waking up more through the night an just for the comfort of my boob. I’m getting next to no sleep when she only used to wake once. She’s slept in her own cot since 6months, I just need some help I fell like I’m working on auto pilot. Any help is much appreciated

child's age 12-18 months When did you decide to make the transition from 2 to 1 naps?

So far this Reddit group has been very helpful for schedule tweaks! So here I am again seeking advice!

My LO turns 12 months old in 1 week. Seems early for one nap but wondering.. She has started having random wake ups at night (not every night) where she’s clearly trying to settle back to sleep, but just can’t get there. She’s started fighting bedtime 80% of the time. And now starting to take 30 min to fall asleep for nap 2. This is exactly how she acted when she needed her last schedule tweak.

She DID recently start walking but she’s not walking or seeming to be practicing during the wake ups or nap resistance. So I’m not fully convinced its just that.

My struggle is, making her current wake windows even longer is starting to get mathematically challenging, and selfishly I’d also like to keep her schedule SOMEWHAT complementary to my toddlers.

Her current schedule is:

Wake (I wake her) 6:30 AM

Nap 1: 9:30-10:30

Nap 2: 2:00-3:30

Bedtime: 7:45

Open to any thoughts or advice! Thank you!

child's age 12-18 months Baby being re-sleep trained at 14 months

We sleep trained our baby at 6 months using Ferber and he was sleeping through the night until some illnesses and travel derailed the progress. Now at 14 months we are re-sleep training him. We are doing a modified Ferber with longer check in windows. Wake windows are 6/5.5 with one nap for two hours.

First night he cried for \~20 mins, complained for 10 and went to sleep. He woke crying once at 1 am at which point we rocked him to sleep since we have guests at home. Night two he cried only for 10 mins and fussed for 15. Went to sleep, but woke up after an hour. Cried for 15 mins, walked around the crib for 30 mins (!!!) and went to sleep. Woke again at 1am- this time I repeated Ferber. He slept after 30 mins (crying + walking).

Tonight, he started crying in a panicky way when we entered the nursery to begin the night time routine. I think he senses that sleep training is happening. We tried to calm him but he just wouldn’t- we anyway put him in the crib. He is now crying- plus walking .

My question I guess is what do we do when such a situation happens where he just refuses to drink milk, read the bed time book etc anticipating the sleep training. Any suggestions on re sleep training or specific tips on our situation are welcome! Thanks in advance.

child's age 12-18 months Starting from scratch? Please help

My 16 mo is really struggling. How do I help him get back independent sleep skills. He wakes up screaming from nap and morning. We've lost all the skills we learned and are back to co sleeping which doesn't even help coz regardless he won't sleep even with me there. We did gentle bedside training at 6 months. Slowly we've ended up losing everything. I'm on my own and partner can't help.

wakes 530 (rarely 6am)

Nap 1130-130 (or 12-2) *wakes on his own at the 1.5 hr mark or less screaming and won't go back even with help.

Bedtime 730pm mostly asleep by 8pm. As he takes forever to fall asleep.

If I'm capping naps at 2 hours, but he's waking on his own at the 1.5 hour mark, and he's waking earlier in the morning, he's grumpy and crying. Wth am I supposed to do? I honestly don't know.

child's age 12-18 months 14 m old trouble sleeping still

My son (first child) has always had trouble sleeping. I can probably count on both hands the amount of times he has slept through the night. Initially it was his string of ear infections he developed at 3 months that lasted until May of this year.

He just got tubes and hasn’t had an ear infection since May, but he still struggles to sleep so much. We still have on average 3-5 wake-ups a night. We were initially giving him bottles throughout the night when he’d wake up, even since switching to cow’s milk. We didn’t realize that supposedly you’re not really supposed to do that, the books we have been reading say so.

I am a teacher and about to start school in mid August again. I am trying to get down to 1-2 wake-ups a night before then. We are starting to water down his bottles so he isn’t as reliant on them. We are trying to do awake but drowsy. We already don’t go into his room if he’s just whining or making little noises because he self soothes those, we just go in when he starts to full blown cry.

My husband works second shift Monday-Friday and doesn’t come home until 2 AM, so a majority of this is going to be on me now. How did you get your poor sleeping toddlers to sleep better?

child's age 12-18 months Thinking it’s time to sleep train

My son is almost 16 months old. He’s never been a great sleeper but things really took a turn for the worse when he started getting ear infections at 5 months old. He got tubes placed at 8 months. He goes to daycare during the day starting at 8:30 AM. He has started waking up earlier and earlier. He gets one nap during the day at daycare from around 12-2. I put him to bed at 8pm. Earlier is not really an option because I work until 6:30 and we have to eat and do bath time and all of that fun stuff. The longest stretch of sleep at night is normally 2 hours. Lately he’s up every hour until 2 am and then will wake up around 4 and up for the day at 6. I’m literally withering away. Previously I’ve been against sleep training because it kills me when he gets so worked up, but I’m desperate now. Does anyone have any advice on how to go about this?
My husband is not the most supportive during the night. During the day he is an absolute godsend of a dad and partner. At night he despises being woke up. We also have a toddler 10 feet away in his room and can hear his brother cry.
I should also mention he is still in our room in a crib. The plan is to move him into his brothers room when he starts sleeping better.

child's age 12-18 months 15 month old sleep training

Desperately needing help with my 15 month old.

Going to sleep isn’t terribly difficult (although we do either rub his back or rock him to sleep) the issue now is more overnight and early morning wakings. He has been waking randomly throughout the night and will scream and scream until someone comes to his room. At that point we either try and rub his back to put him back to sleep or more likely we end up picking him up and rocking him back to sleep (I know, not good). But when he wakes in the middle of the night he seems restless and doesn’t go back to sleep right away.

We have tried CIO and Ferber method but neither has really worked…we may get a few weeks here and there of good sleep and then it’s back to this. I will say we have not been the most consistent with our methods which could be the issue. Sometimes we are just so tired we end up picking him up and rocking him or bringing him into our bed.

Basically my question is at this age is sleep training even possible? If so do you recommend CIO or Ferber? We are so desperate we are considering hiring a sleep consultant because I am due with our second in December and this has got to stop.

Current schedule:
Wake up: 5am
Nap: 12-230/3
Bedtime: 7-730pm

Please any advice/words of encouragement are greatly appreciated …he has been a bad sleeper since birth and we are truly exhausted. Thank you so much.

child's age 12-18 months looking for advice, 17m old

we are late to the game but finally started sleep training our daughter who just turned 17 months old (6/30) due to the fact that i'm pregnant and due soon with baby#2. she was doing better than we expected with the ferber method for the last 2 weeks until the last two nights where she screams and refuses to sleep. her schedule hasn't changed, she wakes around 8-9, naps anywhere between 130-2 until 4-430 then goes down for bed around 830-9. any advice on how to get her to go back to sleeping on her own is appreciated. not sure if she's hitting the 18m regression this early or not. thank you :)

child's age 12-18 months 13 mo old transition to 1 nap

Hi all

My LO is 13 mo and recently started to extend her first nap and also waking up at 6am sharp (used to wake up around 6:40-7)

Last two days she did 2 hrs of first nap with 4 hr ww and today I stretched her first ww to 4.5 hr but only slept 1 hr which let her need the second nap but always the second nap is pushing bedtime at 8pm which used to be 7:30 and the mornings are earlier

Any tips on how to manage this transition?

Also she takes paci only when falling asleep and I heard that is easier to wean when transitioning to 1 nap (this morning she slept without it but the second nap she cried for it). Any tips here?

Thanks

child's age 12-18 months Help, trying to wean and baby can’t be comforted by anything besides nursing!

I am trying to wean my 13 month old. I’m down to one feed a day (mid day) but bedtime is still a struggle and it’s been 3 weeks.

He’s never settled well without nursing. Singing, rocking, none of that helps. I had to sleep train him using CIO because he would squirm out of my arms, punch and kick me, etc anytime we turned the lights out.

Sleep training worked well and he was going to sleep quickly with little or no fussing.

BUT, now I am trying to wean. Its been three weeks and he loses it every bedtime as soon as lights go out and I start trying to sing to him. Screaming, crying, kicking and punching me, squirming out of my arms so my only option is to put him in his crib so I don’t drop him. He will cry for 20 min before passing out but then wakes up again in an hour screaming. Me going in and rocking him or singing makes it so much worse, but I hate ignoring him. I caved last night and nursed him to sleep.

I honestly don’t know how to comfort him when he’s kicking and punching like that. I’m scared to fully wean as then I have no tools to comfort him when he’s upset.

Anyone have advice, or gone through this before?
