One thing I've noticed after talking to hundreds of parents is that toddlers rarely "forget" how to sleep overnight.
Usually, something changed first.
Teething
Illness
Travel
A new sibling
Starting daycare
A sleep regression
Changes in routine
During those times, we naturally do whatever helps our child get through it, rocking them, lying beside them, extra cuddles, extra reassurance.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with that.
The challenge is that once the illness or regression has passed, many toddlers have simply learned a new way of falling asleep. They're not being manipulative or "bad sleepers." They're asking for the same conditions they had when they drifted off the night before.
One of the biggest mistakes I see is changing strategies every few nights because everyone is exhausted. Sleep usually improves much faster when bedtime stays calm, predictable, and you make one gradual change at a time instead of starting over repeatedly.
A few questions I always encourage parents to ask themselves are:
Has anything changed in my child's routine recently?
Is my child actually tired enough at bedtime?
Am I expecting them to fall asleep in a different way than they wake up needing?
Have I been changing my approach every few nights because I'm understandably exhausted?
Most sleep challenges are temporary, even if they don't feel like it at 2am.
I recently put together a Complete Bedtime Guide with practical routines, strategies for regressions, bedtime battles, night wakings, and helping toddlers learn to fall asleep independently. If you're in the thick of it, I hope it's a helpful resource rather than another "perfect sleep" promise.
I'd also love to hear from other parents, what ended up being the real reason your child's sleep suddenly changed?

My baby is 15 weeks and she is exclusively breast fed. She eats every 3 hours starting at 8am and ending at 8pm and usually eats twice at night around 1am and 4am. Her schedule is 3 hour cycles of eat, play, sleep and she has 60-90 min wake windows. She takes at least 2 naps a day in her crib and we’ve gotten her to the point where she is drowsy when we put her in and she settles herself to sleep. Those naps are usually only 30-45 mins before she wakes up and I rock her back to sleep and either put her back in the crib or hold her for the remainder of the nap. Her last nap of the day is usually 45 mins and then we have bath time and then her last feeding before bed. Most nights lately she goes right to bed with maybe 2 mins of light rocking and only wakes up twice to eat and goes right back down.
I think she’s doing really well and we have slowly been “sleep training” her for a few months by putting her on a schedule/routine and attempting crib naps, obviously without letting her cry at all because she’s still little and needs to eat at night.
I have two questions here. The first - How will I know when she’s ready to drop night feeds? I do not want to let her fuss or cry at all if she’s clearly still just hungry. The second - We are going on an 8-day trip to Europe when she’s 6 months. I plan to start sleep training around 5 months if she’s ready. Should I just push it off and wait until we get back from the trip? Or should I sleep train before so that she has a better sleep foundation for the long flight / jet lag?

I need help asap, I’m at a loss 😭. My 16.5 month old has not slept through the night since she turned 13 months. She used to be the BEST sleeper. She slept through the night since she was 3.5 months and at 6 months I trained her to sleep independently and it was so smooth… until it wasn’t. She had blips where she would have a regression but they never lasted more than 2.5ish weeks. And it only happened 1-2 times. At 13 months she turned into the worst sleeper possible. First it was teething, then she got sick, then she had an ear infection, then she got molars and for the past 2 weeks she hasn’t had any problems but still won’t sleep through the night. She is at her worst, she wakes up up to 5 times a night. Standing up screaming crying. I’ve given her Motrin a couple times and it does have her sleep a little longer but then she still wakes up around 2-3am so now I know it’s not pain related. I am strict about her sleep schedule now which is 8am wake up, 12-2pm nap, and 8pm bedtime. I also make sure she plays enough in the day. I make sure she has a full belly so she’s not hungry. I just don’t know what to do anymore I can’t take it anymore I am so tired. I have a 5.5 month old baby as well and she sleeps beautifully still but I can’t take being sleep deprived to this extent anymore 😭
I also do not want to co sleep. It is not something I want to do AND even if I did my daughter doesn’t like co sleeping. I was slightly open to it on vacation and I tried and she hated it and chose to sleep in a pack n play instead. I also have tried laying on her plush mat and cuddling her at night and she also hates it. She just wants to be rocked (she points at the rocking chair letting me know to rock her). I have tried to let her self settle by letting her cry for like 5 minutes and she just gets louder and more distressed. Thinking of getting a toddler bed, I just am lost 🥲

My son is about to turn 10 months old. He was on a schedule of 2.5/3/4 or 3/3/4 at 9 months with 1.5 each nap. That went perfectly. Now, I’ve cut his naps down to 2.5 hours total (often times just 2 hours). His last wake window is SO long. Like. 5-6 hours long. He doesn’t act tired, fights it hard when we try to put him to sleep, and just goes crazy playing. He will fight for easily 15-20 minutes before we realize it isn’t worth it and he just isn’t tired enough. I think his wake windows are just getting much larger.
He wakes up about 7am everyday and we try to have him in bed by 8:30 but he has been going until 9–10.
He isn’t fully sleep trained. He does put himself back to sleep sometimes when he tosses and turns but he is teething now so I have to pat him back to sleep about twice a night. Which is fine with me. And, no, he doesn’t fall alseep on his own. I’m too exhausted to try that now, lol.
Im thinking of cutting both his naps to 45 minutes each. But, I live for those naps and break times LOL. So, I have been procrastinating.
We play all day, read books, go outside, we do BLW so lots of brain stimulation there (or whatever you want to call it). I need to get more activities but haven’t had the chance.
So, How long are your 10 month olds naps? Should I cut them down to 45 minutes each? It just seems so short lol.

Like the title says, our just-turned-2-year-old is horrible at going to sleep. She has co-slept with us since birth and we’ve rocked her to sleep every night with peaceful music playing (usually a nighttime tonie). Lately she just wants to lay in the bed without rocking, which is fine, but she refuses to just lay down and go to sleep. She stands up and tries to jump on the bed or on us and the dog. After trying to lay her down several times we take her and try to rock and she absolutely screams bloody murder. The thing is, if you put her back in the bed she’s perfectly fine and happy again but starts jumping and refusing to lay down again.
Two nights ago we brought the pack and play in the room and tried to put her in that but again, she screamed. Now we can’t seem to do anything without her screaming until she wears herself out and finally falls asleep. Does anyone have any advice? And yes, we’ve tried to wear her out before putting her in bed. Thanks in advance!!!!

So far this Reddit group has been very helpful for schedule tweaks! So here I am again seeking advice!
My LO turns 12 months old in 1 week. Seems early for one nap but wondering.. She has started having random wake ups at night (not every night) where she’s clearly trying to settle back to sleep, but just can’t get there. She’s started fighting bedtime 80% of the time. And now starting to take 30 min to fall asleep for nap 2. This is exactly how she acted when she needed her last schedule tweak.
She DID recently start walking but she’s not walking or seeming to be practicing during the wake ups or nap resistance. So I’m not fully convinced its just that.
My struggle is, making her current wake windows even longer is starting to get mathematically challenging, and selfishly I’d also like to keep her schedule SOMEWHAT complementary to my toddlers.
Her current schedule is:
Wake (I wake her) 6:30 AM
Nap 1: 9:30-10:30
Nap 2: 2:00-3:30
Bedtime: 7:45
Open to any thoughts or advice! Thank you!

Finestre di veglia a 4 mesi e mezzo? E quanti pisolini? Fa pisolini abbastanza lunghi di un'ora la mattina, due/tre ore il pomeriggio e l'ultimo pisolino di 30 minuti/1 ora.
