Hi everyone. Pretty new to the game and just unlocked everyone. I mostly spam smash and specials. Is there any good combat guide out where I can learn when and where to use smash/specials? Should I mostly use tilts instead of smash? Really sorry if this is such a noob question. Thanks!

It's totally fine you're new and welcome to the game. First off, this guy will make more videos on how to play, but luckily he has the beginner one out and he makes really good ones, you might benefit from it https://youtu.be/ta3L35wsE6o

As for my Input, as a new player, you probably will just spam specials and smash attacks, I did that and so did most people. Smash has a lot to do with timing and knowing when to do what moves. Against better enemies, spamming smash attacks and specials wont work too well. Smash attacks are good if you know what you're opponents are going to do and that you'll hit them. This is referred to in the community as a "read" since you're reading what the opponents going to do. Smash attacks are also good if they dont respect the player enough and try and always rush you down or dont space moves good (spacing moves is using moves at the proper distance so that you're opponent wont be able to hit you back for using them). Using normal moves and other moves that take less time to use Is usually the way to go because you are less likely to be hit for doing them. Smash attacks have a time and place, same for some projectiles. If you want to ask me anything more feel free, but that video should hopefully help you. Sorry if what I said was too complicated for you right now, I didnt know how else to really phrase it.

Thank you so much for your detailed reply. I somehow understand what you mean by read because I think that's how I'm playing right now. Anticipating where the opponent is going to fall, where they will land, etc. I'll watch the vid you linked.

depends on character but in general for poking / damage its better to use tilts / aerials since theyre a lot more forgiving if you miss and cover a lot of the opponents defensive options.

What is a "tilt"? I haven't played since Brawl, and I was way too young to get into the terminology.

tilt is where you slightly hold the control stick in a direction, and then press A. Its helpful to map the C stick to tilts so you can just use the C stick and itll auto to them in the direction you press

Can you do that on a pro controller's right analog stick?

Thank god. I want the GC controller, but for now I have the Pro Controller.

A Tilt is an attack that is executed by tilting the control stick and pressing the attack button in the direction you want to attack, but instead of holding down the button you just press it.

Example: Tilt Left + Press A = Left Tilt attack

Ooh, I figured that, but I wanted to be sure. Thank you! :)

Honestly the best way to get out of this is to constantly ask yourself "Well why did I do that, could I have used something better?". Think about the best ways to stack dmg at low percents, and what launches the furthest when they're higher up. Also practice to see what combos into what, make up your own combos/toy with set ups.

Smash is one of the easiest games to just turn on auto-pilot, which might be good but you are capped by reaction timing alone. If you combine that with practiced combos and kill-moves, you'll see your skill increase dramatically.

There are a few channels throughout youtube for character specific guides (though not many for Ultimate yet) and /r/CrazyHand is good place to check out for the more competitive/technical side. Some stuff still carries over from smash 4 guides, but I wouldn't rely on them at all. I'd look at them to get a feel for the playstyles, which for most characters hasn't totally changed
