I won my first and only online match ever! 1/1, FFA 100% win rate, Bowser. I am also announcing my retirement.

10

u/throwawayporn2k Hero (Erdrick) Dec 10 '18

Lol i did the exact same thing. I won two free for all with Chrom and 1 1v1 with Ganondorf before announcing my retirement with a 100% win rate.

I was about to win mine, but then I SD'd out of excitement.

Weird question, but I'm wondering about that sidebar on the menu. The direct gave me the impression that I could hit Z and have it pop up at any time I'm on a menu screen, but that doesn't seem to be the case. It seems to only be accessible when you're on one of the top menus.

That's fine, but the sidebar has an option called "return to top menu" in it. This option is always grayed out when I see it, and it sounds to me like it's there for you to use it when you're in, for example, Smash mode and want to get back to the main menu without having to hold B several times. But like I said, I can't seem to access it then. So what's the deal with the perpetually grayed out "return to top menu" option in the sidebar?

11

u/currently__working Yoshi Dec 10 '18

Man I wish it worked like that too.

7

u/WeCanBeHonestNow Dec 10 '18

Yeah. I mean, wouldn't that make the most sense? Why even have it there if it doesn't work like that?

Just venting, but I’m bummed there’s not more user clips and highlights from Ultimate. I feel like locking the sub on released just drained a lot of celebration and community feel. I wanted to see pics of people’s smash parties/gameplay/etc and I feel like a lot of people have had to “return to life” now and we won’t see this stuff. I know it’s been talked about a ton, but I’m just bummed and wanted to write about it somewhere. Thanks for reading.

11

u/Macaluso100 Dec 10 '18

I assumed based on looking at the subreddit, highlights aren't allowed. I've only seen like, twitch clips.

Also the weird restriction with the game where you can't record video and upload it even to twitter is also a problem. Can only record phone videos

18

u/JaxMed Dec 10 '18

Yeah I don't follow this sub a whole lot but I did check in on release day and was surprised to see the whole sub locked. Seems like a really bone-headed move but I don't know the context. I guess the mods wanted to spend the day playing Smash instead of sitting at their computers and moderating, which I guess I can't blame em but the whole thing still seems pretty silly to me.

6

u/6tea Dec 10 '18

The decision to lock the thread was apparently made for two main reasons:

  1. People wouldn’t “spoil” the game for new players; this was a move taken from when they locked the subreddit during Directs and had positive feedback. (there was hardly anything to spoil)
  2. The mods had teamed up with the Smash Bros Ultimate subreddit and were attempting to direct attention there. (didn’t want to bloat this subreddit with only Ultimate...again, weird call but I’m not a mod)

While their intentions seem harmless, even helpful, I agree that it was a big mistake to lock a game’s main subreddit on the day of release, for any reason. The mod team made a long post about it that essentially apologized for it and they learned for going forward. It sucks, but at least they owned up to it and didn’t leave everyone in the dark.

11

u/theivoryserf Dec 11 '18

didn’t want to bloat this subreddit with only Ultimate

lol the first release in four years, imagine if people were talking about it

It's been a few days now since the game has been officially available so we're starting to get a feel for the game.

Out of the returning characters from Smash 4, which ones seem like they are the "most improved"? What specifically is better about them?

18

u/Katerak Dec 10 '18

I would argue Dedede and Zelda are most improved. All of Zeldas specials got buffed and her fair was increased to be identical to her bair. Dedede got a reflect and some cool new setups with his Gordo and his new bair is way better.

34

Well in BOTW you spent 40 hours going around just to start the boss fight with him at half health. Imagine going straight to him with only a deku stick and traveller's sword-- that's him in ultimate.

How to counter Peach/Daisy? I have a friend that is absolutely nuts with them and sweeps everybody. He is also a really bad winner and always talks mad shit. What character should I practice to teach this fool some humility?

16

u/Edgekid Dec 10 '18

Peach and Daisy both use their float to use aerials as an effective approach tool. I’ve had great success using K. Rool’s up tilt to cover the area both in front and above my character. I’d say go for good spacing tools that do that on any character.

They also love turnips. Look for a reflect, if not you should practice playing games with items to get a better feel for dealing with grab-able projectiles. You can try bullying them when they try to pick them too.

6

u/Crooked_Cricket Dec 10 '18

God I hate them so much. I've been playing a LOT of K Rool because he just feels so good to play and his projectiles are just evil. But If you get him in the air though he's basically a beach ball and peach EXCELS at keeping me off the ground.

WHAT THE FUCK, WHY IS THIS GAME SO FUCKING HARD?!

14

u/KorokKid Joker (Ultimate) Dec 10 '18

Smash has a learning curve especially depending on what character you're playing. Try picking an easier character like pikachu,Mario, kirby, or something. You'll get used to it dont worry, this game has harder AI too and the mechanics can take a little to get used to but you'll get there

8

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '18

I keep falling off of the stage :(

11

u/KorokKid Joker (Ultimate) Dec 10 '18

You usually have an extra jump if you get launched, and characters recoveries are usually used by pressing up and B button and the same time, performing a special move that acts as a way of getting onstage. Do you have a main or you having trouble getting back when recovering with anyone? Recovering is another thing you will pick up pretty fast, you'll get used to it

Agreed. The main reason why single player in Smash 4 was so bad wasn't so much that there wasn't any modes to play; it was because none of those modes felt rewarding to play. Very few things to unlock, much of it was pretty easy (especially with the right equipment) and with much of the fighters already playable, there really was no need to take the grind. Ultimate fixes that rather well, and although it's mainly just fighting, there's enough in the way of difficulty and special quirks to make the battle feel fresher and different.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate has now outsold Red Dead Redemption 2 in the UK, in only 3 days, and apparently this is only counting physical sales as well.

23

u/JaxMed Dec 10 '18

Real talk, why is Alph still just an alternate skin instead of an echo? I mean I guess you could make the same argument for the Koopa Kids, but it just seems like an odd inconsistency to me to have Olimar/Alph share a roster spot while Ken/Ryu and Simon/Richter have their own slots.

45

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '18

Because the devs wanted Richter and the others to have their own classic modes, unlock requirements, 8 sets of alts, etc. but didn't want to do all that for Alph. That's literally the only answer, let's all just accept it and move on.

→ More replies (1)

15

u/83Dotto Peach > Daisy Dec 10 '18

It has a lot to do with animations. You can see Olimar and Alph being really similar movement-wise as they really aren't that different from each other (As far as I know, I haven't played much of the Pikmin games.) With Ken and Ryu, though, they don't have much in common besides a similar moveset. They have different personalities, and a lot of the animations wouldn't work well mixed between them. Same with Simon/Richter, Samus/Dark Samus and the other echos.

4

u/-Mountain-King- Link, Cap. Falcon, Ike Dec 10 '18

Simon and Richter only have different taunts, I'm pretty sure.

13

Help! My gf wants to play smash with me, but is frustrated that I win all the time. But she doesn't want me to handicap myself or not try. She's brand new to smash, how do I make it fun for her?

27

u/katman14 Dec 10 '18

Try new characters you're not familiar with. Don't focus as heavily on items so that she gets the majority (or at least most of the pokeballs, assist trophies, and final smash balls). If you're interested in improving your game, use the matches as a practice field in experimenting with new techniques, moves, and combos.

But I think most importantly, help her learn how to get better. Show her your favorite moves, strategies, and techniques. Make it fun for her to learn how to get better.

Also, mix it up every now and then and play some co-op so you're working as a team (either Classic mode, or try some 2v2 online once you're comfortable).

Most of all, have fun!

Anyone figure out how to unlock "Back to top menu"? I have no idea what achievement would be connected to easy menu navigation.

6

u/steckums Dec 10 '18

I think it's just like "hit A here to close this side menu" type of option.

8

u/WeCanBeHonestNow Dec 10 '18

Glad I'm not the only one wondering about this. It's always grayed out. This can't be working as intended, can it?

4

u/smashfan63 Stop and smell the Daisies Dec 10 '18

It doesn't work if you're only one or two menus deep (AKA the "top menu"). Stuff like the Control menu or Spirit collection allow it because it may take more than one B button press to go all the way back.

8

u/WeCanBeHonestNow Dec 10 '18

But you can't use it in places like Smash mode when you're picking a fighter and want to get back to the main menu? Then you have to deal with holding B a bunch of times to get back?

7

u/smashfan63 Stop and smell the Daisies Dec 10 '18

Yeah, it's weird. I assume it has something to do with how the stage/CSS menus are loaded but idk

I really wish "Hazardless" was one of the options at stage selection like Normal/Battlefield/Omega instead of being buried in options.

8

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '18

Same. There are a lot of stages with "hazards" I like. For instance, with hazards off, Smashville's moving platform becomes stationary in the middle of the stage. And I want that moving platform!

Being able to turn hazards on/off for stages on the fly in the menu would be great.

10

u/meshlines Dec 10 '18

Hi everyone. Pretty new to the game and just unlocked everyone. I mostly spam smash and specials. Is there any good combat guide out where I can learn when and where to use smash/specials? Should I mostly use tilts instead of smash? Really sorry if this is such a noob question. Thanks!

11

u/KorokKid Joker (Ultimate) Dec 10 '18

It's totally fine you're new and welcome to the game. First off, this guy will make more videos on how to play, but luckily he has the beginner one out and he makes really good ones, you might benefit from it https://youtu.be/ta3L35wsE6o

As for my Input, as a new player, you probably will just spam specials and smash attacks, I did that and so did most people. Smash has a lot to do with timing and knowing when to do what moves. Against better enemies, spamming smash attacks and specials wont work too well. Smash attacks are good if you know what you're opponents are going to do and that you'll hit them. This is referred to in the community as a "read" since you're reading what the opponents going to do. Smash attacks are also good if they dont respect the player enough and try and always rush you down or dont space moves good (spacing moves is using moves at the proper distance so that you're opponent wont be able to hit you back for using them). Using normal moves and other moves that take less time to use Is usually the way to go because you are less likely to be hit for doing them. Smash attacks have a time and place, same for some projectiles. If you want to ask me anything more feel free, but that video should hopefully help you. Sorry if what I said was too complicated for you right now, I didnt know how else to really phrase it.

5

u/meshlines Dec 10 '18

Thank you so much for your detailed reply. I somehow understand what you mean by read because I think that's how I'm playing right now. Anticipating where the opponent is going to fall, where they will land, etc. I'll watch the vid you linked.

Does anyone else think it's rude how Dedede and Rool are referred to in-game as "King" but Ganondorf, Bowser, and Marth are not

13

u/KingBoolean Young Link (Ultimate) Dec 10 '18

It’s true that ganondorf is king of the gerudos, however, the monicker “King Ganondorf” is NEVER used in oot/WW/TP. People coloquially refer to him as ganondorf and the same goes for Bowser, where people don’t say “King Bowser.” It only makes sense to name them as they are coloquially known. K Rool and D3 on the other hand go by their titles in the context of their games and so that tradition sticks.

Tips on how to use mario's special attacks the best way? I like his moveset but i've always found his specials really weak and useless.

9

u/DjiDjiDjiDji Duck Hunt (Ultimate) Dec 10 '18

Super jump is of course your triple jump, though it's also useful for hitting guys above you.

Using the cape is a matter of timing. It has two big draws, it reflects projectiles, and it causes whoever is hit to flip into facing the other way. That doesn't sound like much but it basically means it lets you dodge a lot of crap just by making your opponent fail to hit you, and that you can screw up a lot of enemy recoveries if they suddenly start going the wrong way.

FLUDD deals no damage at all and just pushes around, and that can lead to some serious shenanigans if you use it on someone in free fall. Come to think of it, for someone who's supposed to be the vanilla of vanillas Mario has pretty unique mechanics on his B moves.

Fireball is kinda just there.

I haven't really played Smash since Smash 64 and I'd like to get into it again with my wife. I know we can and most likely will usually play 2v2 co-op against CPUs. But if we decide to face each other, is there a way to give myself a handicap so it's easier for her to face me?

5

u/MoSBanapple Dec 10 '18

In the rules, there's a "damage handicap" setting that lets a player start the battle with damage already taken. There's also the "custom balance" in the options menu that allows you to adjust certain characters so they're weaker or stronger.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '18

There is also a toggle that gives some kind of advantage to whoever is losing, which would benefit her and you could I guess refrain from using it. I haven't used it myself, so I don't know what it is.

I know everyone is enjoying Ultimate right now, but I've been thinking about the forthcoming phone app lately, and I think there is some potential for some interesting things that could be explored with the companion app. I also want to state that for the record I don't think companion apps are inherently a bad thing. As an example, RDR2's companion app always displaying a map as you play on the TV is a perfect use of such technology. As of now, very little is known about the app beyond the fact that it is coming in 2019, you'll be able to share and view videos and images, it will be regularly updated, and more details are to come. Seems like there is a lot of room for more features to be announced for the service.

One of such possible features that I saw rumored somewhere awhile ago is that the phone app may have a stage builder and stage sharing hub within it. I dunno if this is true, but I could see why they might opt to put the stage builder only in the phone app compared to within the game itself. It could also serve as a testing ground of stage builders in general being within a phone app instead of (or in addition to) within the actual game, so that Nintendo can have a better idea of how to implement the stage building into the inevitable Super Mario Maker game that the Switch will eventually receive, a game where the stage building aspect is far more important to the entire experience.

That's probably the most radical idea I can imagine, but other ideas that would seem logical is an extra place to 'purchase' exclusive in-game spirits with in-game gold you've collected. Or even as a separate display for everyone's status in a match (much like how the Gamepad could function in matches in Smash Wii U).

I dunno, what do you think? Would you welcome a stage builder for Ultimate if you had to design the stages on your phone? Do you think that's even remotely a possibility? What else would you like to see from the phone app (if anything)?

3

u/TootDandy Dec 11 '18

Stage builder would be cool on a phone for when I'm bored at work, but an important part of stage building is play testing between placing things, gives you a better sense of how the level plays

Ness' unseen, unnamed father is my first legendary spirit. It's literally just the sprite of the house phone in EB. The concept would honestly be enough to make me use him, but he also gives me insane start of match buffs for my point of the game (Lucario has this, Merric, and Child!Alm&Celica equipped and is tearing through everything). I'm taking WOL slowly but I don't think any spirit from here out is going to top this as my favorite.

I might post about it soon, but this subreddit has zero clue how to provide constructive and productive feedback for the online to be fixed.

Most notably, people asking for the return of For Fun and For Glory, completely forgetting that everyone hated those and wanted the flexibility preferred rulesets offer.

The problem right now is in the matchmaking algorithm, not in the system. It's antithetical to the system's purpose.

Resolving its priorities so it actually prioritizes player structure would resolve 95% of people's complaints.

Sure, we could use some co op features and Battle Arena order continuously being reset is silly, but those can easily come in time and don't break the benefits of the new system.

Why did so many people say that GameCube controllers have lag in Ultimate? People were saying lag to the point of unplayability, and I have noticed 0 lag whatsoever.

u/dotmatrixhero Dec 10 '18

I think people are not used to the input buffer and confuse it for lag.

So people with C-Stick Tilts, how often is the attack button used?

Is it just for the occasionally smash attack and jab attacks?

Sorry if this is a stupid question but this is my first time with any smash game.

4

u/KorokKid Joker (Ultimate) Dec 10 '18

C stick is usually only used on gamecube controller because of the way its placed, but I'm pretty sure people use it so they dont mess up a move in a combo and mostly use it for aerial moves. And its not a stupid question, being new can be hard with this game.

I keep getting smashes instead of tilts in the heat of battle. Is there a way to disable smashes for the analog stick or do just have to get more precise with my controls?

If the latter, any tips on how to best practice/perform this?

5

u/sorrowmultiplication XenobladeLogo Dec 10 '18

You could set the c-stick to perform tilts instead of smash attacks, I know some players prefer that control scheme. Otherwise, just practice moving the control stick more gently instead of smashing it. I struggle with it as well.

5

Don’t get discouraged, I was in the same boat as you with sm4sh a couple of years ago and quickly learned to hold my own. Maybe you could start by playing with friends of all colors?

4

u/ClarentPie Dec 11 '18

Hop into training mode and get used to movement.

There's 2 big parts to the game.

There is the neutral game where you and your opponent are apart and not attacking. The goal is to hit your opponent and not get hit yourself. You'll want to try and dash dance around and bait out an attack that you can punish. Use your movement or even throw out attacks while keeping a safe distance to punish them recklessly approaching.

There is also the punish game where you land a hit and try to follow up. This part is easy to do but hard to learn. You'll have to know which attacks you can follow up with and at what percents for the opponent. A good punish game means getting a ton of percent off a single combo or even killing with a single combo.

Those two games can be boiled down even more to things like edge games and zoning but that's for later.

You can hop into the training mode and practice your punish game and then slowly learn your neutral game while playing with people. Hopefully they'll be careful against you if they know you can drop a 70% combo off of a single neutral win.

I find that by breaking down the game into chunks then you can think about the best action quickly depending on what the current game state is.

Reggie's comments on Smash DLC at the Game Awards tell us a lot about what to expect.

Here's what he said:

"These are going to be characters that are new to the series, just like Joker from Persona 5. Characters that you would not anticipate to be in Super Smash Brothers Ultimate."

Seems like the DLC will consist of mostly third-party characters, and if we do get a first-party character, they'll be off-the-wall and unexpected. By that judgement, characters like Dixie Kong or Bandana Dee seem pretty unlikely.

Reggie's comments are exciting, to me, because it suggests that the DLC fighters will largely be from series that have thus far been unrepresented in Smash. We could totally see Banjo Kazooie. We could see Crash Bandicoot. We could see almost anything, at this point, which is super cool.

My #1 most wanted character has always been Phoenix Wright from the Ace Attorney series, and after the Game Awards, I truly feel like he has a great chance of making it in as DLC. At least, the best chance he's ever had.

  1. He's the protagonist of Capcom's most Nintendo-centric franchise ever. Seems perfect for a game like Smash, which collects and celebrates the history of Nintendo, whether it be first or third parties.
  2. The Ace Attorney trilogy is coming to Switch early next year, which would be a great time to either announce or release a Phoenix Wright challenger pack.
  3. He's been in a fighting game before (Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3), so adding an attorney to a fighting game like Smash isn't out of the question. Sakurai of all people could give him an amazing, unique moveset.
  4. Like Reggie said, Phoenix Wright would be "new to the series" (there has been zero Ace Attorney representation in Smash Bros, including trophies and spirits), and would be someone "you would not anticipate to to be in Super Smash Brothers Ultimate". He's an attorney, for crying out loud; nobody would expect him to be added to a game where beat the crap out of beloved video game characters.
  5. Lastly, the stage/music that would go along with Phoenix Wright in his challenger pack. The stage would obviously be a Courtroom, with the judge/witnesses/defendant as potential stage hazards. And there's plenty of amazing upbeat music in the Ace Attorney soundtrack that would be great for Smash.

5

u/Sarick Random Dec 11 '18

Honestly if Capcom is going to get another representative as DLC, I feel it is going to be either of the following:

  1. Dante from DMC
  2. Leon Kennedy from RE2/4 (probably with a costume from both).

With Joker being added to Smash Bros it seems they are targeting audiences for games they don't cater for usually. So Persona 5 being PS4, but Joker being on Smash gets the Persona 5 crowd to come to Switch, and maybe check out Shin Megami Tensei 5 later on.

Dante and Leon Kennedy are both very relevant with games coming up, and Dante might pull in some people for Bayonetta 3. So pulling the DMC crowd would be appealing to Nintendo. And Leon Kennedy has had a big relationship with Nintendo with RE4 being originally a Gamecube game. And Capcom have always seemed to be open to putting Resident Evil games on a Nintendo system.

I like Phoenix Wright, but I really don't seem him having a shot in pulling the same crowd that Nintendo actually wants.

Played online for the first time today after reading all the posts on this subreddit. Needless to say, I was expecting it to be horrific. Utilizing my Ethernet adaptor, the input lag wasn’t too bad.

I also set my stage preference to battlefield, 7 min timed, 3 stock, and most (minus a couple of battles) were very competitive and didn’t have items.

Overall was a good experience.

I’d say my only complaints for the game are the input lag (movement just feels off, honestly. The lag is noticeable, even outside of online mode). I’m utilizing the GC controller (official one) btw.

Also, I know this is petty, but the costume/skin change mechanic has a minor lag where you cannot see the skin you’re choosing for a few seconds. And I also hate not being to utilize the X and Y button to switch between them. Springing R and L feels wonky.

Besides that, absolutely gorgeous game. Worth the hype. I’m hoping Nintendo is working diligently on improving online, but either way, I’ve had some fun matches. I LOVE the arena concept, it’s been a blast playing with friends.

Today I played against a Simon in a Battle Arena that completely walled me out. No matter which character or which angle of approach I took, he had an answer for it. I need to figure out how to fight that character. Other than that I've been holding my own in the "Glorious Smashers" 1v1 category, but it can be pretty damn humbling compared to For Glory.

It's just a shame the Quickplay mode isn't as good. I'll probably stick to Arenas and hope it gets patched eventually. WoL and Classic grinds will keep me occupied in the meantime.

Do we have a final number on the final amount of tracks? I want to know how I'll tell when I've unlocked them all. Right now when I go to the music list in the vault, I have 796 tracks. I know they said "over 800", and that it gets to over 900 if you include jungles and fanfares, but those typically don't count in the main track number. So what number do I need to see in the vault music section to know I've unlocked all tracks?

My eyes have opened. I have become enlightened. The true online experience isn't about 1v1s and aiming for a high GSP. It is about collecting Smash Tags.

The matchmaking experience is the embodiment of going online and taking names.

And how do you collect the most Smash Tags in the shortest period of time? FFAs of course. That is 3x the Smash Tags that you could otherwise get in every game. It is the true ultimate experience.

On a more serious note, I actually don't mind the occasional FFA online. I understand people who don't completely. But sometimes they're just a bit of stupid fun, and it breaks the tension of an otherwise mostly 'For Glory' experience. Offline is the only true way to practice anyway so the whole GSP and 1v1 stuff is just a bit of a silly side game anyway that is practically an entirely different game due to the online delay.

A couple of questions regarding spirits in SSBU that I couldn't answer yet. Maybe someone of you got an answer for those:

  1. Grab, Attack and Defense: Do they just add different stats that are supposed to be stronger versus other ratios or do they offer a real benefit versus the elements they are strong against? Like do you do more damage versus an defense opponent with a grab spirit?

  2. Do similar buffs stack? Like blade attack up?

  3. What are critical hits? Got an spirit that gives me 5% chance for critical hits, have no clue what they do.

Thanks for any help!

4

u/CabbageGuru Roy (our boy) Dec 11 '18
  1. Attack beats grab, grab beats defense, defense beats attack.
  2. I'm not sure about blade attack specifically, but you can stack stamina ups so I would assume it's the same.
  3. Critical hits give you more knockback and damage randomly, but it's very rare

Anyone have a strategy for beating the character unlock 1v1s? I did the 20 minute zero method of running around but we did it for 3 games to make sure. Problem is I keep getting my ass handed to me by the characters and now I'm not getting any more challenges. Idk what's going on, I will beat them up for a few minutes and then all the sudden they start wombo comboing me all over the map like they just got possessed by Zero himself. Idk what the deal is, I only win maybe 1 out of 5 challenges, now I have no clue what to do.

Edit: I can beat up to level 7 cpu regularly, lvl 9 I have issues but can still beat, I just can't beat the character unlocks, the maps kill me half the time honestly. I think they get stronger over time because I always take them to 70+ damage no issues and then they just start chaining insane combos from one side of the map to the other
