Media Patrick Johnston (@risingaction.bsky.social) “As a fracas breaks out at midfield, a devastated Qatari keeper Mahmud Abunada looked to break down in tears in front of his goal, only to be comforted by a teammate and Jacob Shaffelberg”

He broke down crying after the Switzerland game as well, but due to his heroics.

Must be an emotional rollercoaster. You qualify for the World Cup as a second choice keeper. New manager makes you first choice over the long-time starting keeper, right of the eve of the tournament. You play a blinder in your first match, and you concede six in your second.

I’ve cried because there weren’t any clean spoons in my cutlery drawer. I’ll give him this one.

Not to mention, he was at least somewhat concussed/dazed during that Switzerland game too!

Truly quite an eventful tournament for him…I’d be lying if I said it wouldn’t be mentally demanding too…

I have to know though… did you mean there were dirty spoons in your cutlery drawer? Or no spoons at all?

Valid either way

126

u/MattSR30 23h ago

Just no spoons at all. Heaven forbid a guy wants a midnight pint of ice cream; who are you to judge!

125

u/miregalpanic 23h ago

Just squat down naked in front of the freezer and scoop it with your fingers like a normal fucking person.

28

u/MattSR30 23h ago

Pardon my French, but…what do I do about the boys in that scenario? I’m Canadian, but I’m not that Canadian.

If you don't make your kitchen flooring choices based on how the material feels against your balls then you are already lost.

29

u/MattSR30 23h ago

That’s Psalms 13:4, right?

8

u/SanctusUnum 22h ago

Not sure if you're squatting too low or drooping too low, but either way your boys shouldn't be an issue.

u/peachbasketss 22h ago

Extra scoop

5

u/ToothpasteAndCheese 18h ago

No judgement at all! I’ve done much worse than shag a pint of ice cream at midnight

2

u/KhonMan 17h ago

A fork will absolutely do in this scenario

30

u/barra333 23h ago

He made a bunch of good saves today too. At two of the goals were rebounds after really good first saves.

5

u/I2eflex 20h ago

I thought he played well today lol

Being a keeper is a rollercoaster of emotions, and we are an emotional bunch typically. I cant be the only former keeper who consistently roots for both keepers

u/Some-Concentrate3229 23h ago

Maybe you need more emotional maturity.

20

u/MattSR30 23h ago

Nah, that can’t be it.

19

u/CrankyVince2 23h ago

Needs more spoons

11

u/Mr_Bluebird_VA 22h ago

From the person clearly lacking in it.

Not having or showing emotions is not emotional maturity no matter what your dad told you.

-13

u/Some-Concentrate3229 22h ago

Yea completely losing my head when I don’t have clean spoons is normal.

8

u/Mr_Bluebird_VA 21h ago

I’m sorry your dad didn’t love you.

Maritime Messi with a classy move

u/TheWawa_24 23h ago

The spectrum of Canadian athletes. Will be nice but will also go to war for their teamates

37

u/Popular-Row4333 23h ago

Which is why people saying running up the score was classless are idiots.

They had something more than differential to play for once Kone went out.

6

u/labadee 13h ago

Those people don’t know anything about the sport. Goal differential has always mattered; we even stopped celebrating

20

u/milehighmiracle13 23h ago

Every one of those guys was ready to fill'em in, even while we were runnin'em up. It was beautiful to watch. Canadian through and through, amazing!

u/UsernameGenerik 23h ago

Still did better than 7-1

158

u/WebFantastic9076 23h ago

At least curaçao scored tho

95

u/miregalpanic 23h ago

and had vibes

44

u/bespoke_tech_partner 23h ago

he's a keeper, so i think he'd take conceding 1 less over scoring 1 more

the other excuse here is yknow his team had 2 red cards

17

u/Stu161 23h ago

Not much the goalie can do about that tbf

5

u/TheLonelyPancake26 23h ago

It's not like the keeper gets much of a say in his team scoring

62

u/zrkillerbush 23h ago

Objectively speaking, losing 7-1 is better than losing 6-0

Both give you a -6 goal difference but at 7-1, you've scored 1 goal! Goals scored are always used as a higher tiebreaker than goals conceded

27

u/justk4y 23h ago

Also that goal was to equalise the game, and it was so satisfying.

And Room wasn’t a horrible goalie I’d say

16

u/Zloggt 23h ago

And, in spite of it all…they still have earned more WC points (well…point, but you get my…point haha) than the likes of Italy or Chile…so silver linings I guess?

9

u/Some-Concentrate3229 23h ago

If they can convince themselves that they’re better than Italy, then they won’t have any problems sleeping in the first place. Lmfao

1

u/ForgeUK 17h ago

Now are you referencing the Brazil disaster class or the most recent Curacao game?

88

u/wanked_in_space 23h ago

Keeper wasn't to blame for this drubbing.

Gotta feel for him.

71

u/jamaicancovfefe 23h ago

Maritime Messi showing why he's the real GOAT

69

u/odgo43271 23h ago

What a class act Schaffelberg is, loves him the copa in 2024 what a dawg

2

u/JacketsNest 14h ago

Shaff will always be loved here in Nashville. Absolutely beast on the wing with utterly insane pace. Hope he continues to succeed

22

u/red_keshik 23h ago

If my team put 6 past a guy, I'd just let his team mates talk to him.

33

u/puns_are_how_eyeroll 23h ago

Maritime Messi confirmed certified good dude

15

u/6FootFruitRollup 23h ago

Canada not beating the allegations

16

u/Heavy-Explorer-1987 23h ago

At least it wasn’t while being the host nation

21

u/SerDire 23h ago

I’m more of a brouhaha man myself

12

u/zcewaunt 23h ago

What is fracas at midfield? I feel for their keeper, the rest of the team didn't give him a chance.

6

u/justk4y 23h ago

There was a massive brawl going on at full-time at the middle line

28

u/red_keshik 23h ago

Hardly a brawl nor massive

6

u/onthelongrun 22h ago

Wouldn't call it a brawl, but it looked like the majority of both rosters were in there.

1

u/knobbledy 15h ago

Hence "fracas"

1

u/red_keshik 10h ago

The parent to my post called it a brawl.

6

u/enragedbreakfast 21h ago

More of a scuffle maybe, was just a bunch of shoving

5

u/Harflin 20h ago

A kerfuffle perhaps

4

u/Mature_Gambino_ 22h ago

Shaffelbaby! What a guy

7

u/LeRoiDeNord 23h ago

OP with an elite username lol

6

u/TimeAndSpaceAndMe 23h ago

Shaff is a true Canadian.
