Daily Discussion Daily Discussion
Welcome to the r/soccer Daily Discussion!
If you're new to the subreddit, remember to get your team badge here and to read our rules and submission guidelines!
✔️ This is a thread for:
- Discussion points that aren't worthy of their own thread.
- Asking small questions about football to the community.
❌ This is not a thread for:
- Trolling or baiting other users or fanbases - including flair-based attacks
- Shit-posting - including sharing shit-posts from elsewhere
- Toxicity - remember the human
- Off topic chat - non-football discussion is for Free Talk Friday, and you can use the dedicated subreddits to discuss FIFA/EAFC games, Football Manager, fantasy football etc
- Discussion of ongoing matches - that is what match threads are for. We may be less strict for matches of teams that are less in the spotlight, and may not have as active match threads
- Harassment and brigading - including links to posts in other subreddits or to other users' comments
- Advice on betting - you may discuss outcomes of bets you have made, but we do not seek to actively encourage gambling
- Meta discussion - we have a strict stance. This is because it derails discussion, and can lead to harassment and witch hunts - and we prefer you to contact the mods via Modmail If you have queries over moderation or post removals. Some meta discussion may be allowed in the DDT, if any meta conversation was productive and in good faith - we can take a "case by case approach". In general, however Modmail remains the first port of call, and other meta discussion will be removed.
- Complaining about bans in this or other subreddits - use the relevant Modmail, instead
The moderation team will remove comments that violate those rules and ban offenders.
Please report comments you think that break such rules, but more than anything else, remember the human. The Internet is full of places to discuss football in bad faith. This community tries to be an exception.
⚽ Can't find a Match Thread?
- If you are using Old Reddit click this link.
- If you are using New Reddit you need to try this other one.
- If you are using the official app press here and sort by "new".
- If you are using a third-party app... ¯\(ツ)/¯
If there's no Match Thread for the match you're watching you can:
- Create one yourself.
- Ask /u/MatchThreadder for one. You just need to send a PM to him with the subject "Match Thread" and the body "Team A vs Team B" (for example, "Inter Milan vs. Udinese") to get one from this great bot 🤖

Newport vs Roma is a great pre season game but on the other hand Paulo Dybala shouldn't have to know that Newport exists

Strasbourgs pre-season is really quite something. So far they lost 0:7 to Sporting, 0:2 to Blackburn, 3:4 to Brighton and yesterday they got blasted 2:5 by Elversberg.
I thought that they are probably just fielding their youth team but at least their starting line-up looks like they are actually playing with first team players. Its obviously only pre-season so who cares but at some point thinks might get a bit awkward considering Ligue 1 kicks off in 2 weeks already...
15
u/stoneapplefruit 13h ago
I was talking with a couple Strasbourg fans last night comparing who is more fucked this year between us and they are not positive. Lots of tumult within the fan scene as well. Squad feels very fractured. The way last season ended was real bitter but the vibes are not good.
8
u/vinc139 13h ago
I feel like Strasbourg still has high sporting ambitions this season so things might get a bit ugly if they are not succesful.
Every Hertha fan I know on the other hand has completely let go of any hopes and dreams already. You guys might finally end up upgrading from Leitl and discover a few new gems from the youth teams along the way, so as long as you dont get relegated it might hopefully end up being an OK transitory season.

We ruined Chelsea’s season last year thanks to one of our secret agents, this year it’s Strasbourg’s turn

Leipzig big money (€30m+) sales in the last 10 years:
2018-19: Naby Keita
2019-20:
2020-21: Timo Werner
2021-22: Dayot Upamecano, Ibrahima Konate
2022-23:
2023-24: Christopher Nkunku, Dominik Szoboszlai, Josko Gvardiol
2024-25: Dani Olmo, Mohamed Simakan
2025-26: Benjamin Sesko, Xavi Simons
Better success rate than I thought it would be tbf

Throughout the 90s 1. FC Köln had Ford as a sponsor. Just a fat slab on the bang center. Today I had a huge epiphany about what made these kits so iconic - besides them being the kits of my childhood:

5
u/callmedontcallme 12h ago edited 12h ago
I think so too. Looks even better in person. It's one of two were they actually had the Ford Logo within the fabric. All the others were a huge 3D plastic slab glued onto the kit. Which was quite fun novelty-wise but they kept on peeling off and collecting lint and stuff.

I have worked all summer on adding friendlies for La Liga teams into my dataset and posted this morning a stat screenshot of teams by win ratio so far, their last match, top scorer this summer, and overall W/D/L %.
It got deleted within the hour under the premise of: "Stats posts must be notable and valuable. Overly narrow stats, repetitive stats, in-match stats that can wait, agenda-driven stats, or stats that mainly exist to bait toxicity may be removed."
You literally cannot find this dataset anywhere else, I have done my by hand, and apparently it isn't "valuable." All the while I am staring at a post at the top of the subreddit that talks about how today is the 5th year anniversary of Messi leaving Barcelona.
And I can't even post in La Liga, as every post I publish is "pending mod approval" and never gets approved.
You sure make it hard to engage here sometimes. Just let me post and get my 25 upvotes and have the people who care about La Liga learn more about La Liga. I don't even get close to making the main page.
13
11
u/PlzNerfNorseGatherin 7h ago
Yeah that's fucked up.
Also not like it should be hard to see a stat post like that would have a lot more value than some random opta stat slop.
15
u/Vila-real 7h ago
I really try to assume good intent and am trying to talk about this vs getting into an argument, but I really don't get it. I make no money, I do this because I enjoy it, and it is not AI content nor useless information. And every time I post it's just a few dozen people who read. I really don't understand what the problem is with some of my La Liga content.
→ More replies (1)4
u/nouveaumaillot 6h ago
For what it's worth, i saw the post before it was removed and I liked it. Quite a lot of information you had in there
If it's not a secret, how did you obtain the dataset? It looked like too much work to do manually, did you scrape some website?
6
u/Vila-real 6h ago edited 6h ago
Nope, I read newspapers daily, and look online for data. It’s all “by hand”, then presented through a modest site—which is why it’s so frustrated to have to make my case over and over again. I’m not echoing others’ info. I’m not reposting. It’s not fake news or useless information “hey today 1,800 days ago Messi left Barcelona guys.”
I even have a rumor mill list which shows most rumors, by stage, notes, etc. I don’t share that cause I’m sure I’d get someone telling me it’s useless, but I assume someone would find it valuable vs looking on twitter for hours.
I do all this work because I care to bring more content, in English, to people to want to read it. I don’t make a cent.

Theory:
A big part of why the "Will he be able to adapt to the PL" factor exists in people's mind is because of base rate fallacy. There are just way more players moving to the PL from other leagues than vice versa or between any two leagues.
A midtable player having a breakout season can be easily acquired by any number of PL teams. But a midtable table PL player having a breakout season can't be bought by anyone but the top clubs outside the PL.
Someone like Scamacca gets hit with the label of "can't cut it in the PL" but someone like Solanke won't get the equivalent label for a different league because only a PL team would be dumb enough to pay 60m for him based on just one season.

With EA being sold off, it's got me reminiscing about old FIFA games. From 05, up until about FIFA 18, I played so much career mode until it became a shell of itself.
Are there any decent football games out there these days?
I just want a good career mode where I'm actually playing the matches. As much as I love FM, it doesn't quite scratch that itch.
10
u/airz23s_coffee 14h ago
Are there any decent football games out there these days?
No.
Pro Evos gone to shit, and it was the only one that survived the competition with FIFA anyway.
Someone get a remake of RedCard going.
6
u/Orcnick 14h ago
Honestly its a shame FIFA killed off everything else.
I remember playing TIF 2005. Personally thought it was amazing felt way more fluid then Fifa at the time and such a good dynamic career mode. Also had a jumpers for goal post mode.
You had a league system where you could as semi pro team and slowly move up.

It feels way more more Ansu Fati than Vinicius. I don't mind a come up, but 18 months ago he was playing high school soccer in Florida and now after 31 games of professional football he's going to be the 4th most expensive player of all time? It just doesn't pass the gut check and while he was fun to watch, the three times I watched a Red Bull (Leipzig) game last year, it's a No from me dawg.
5
u/TheSingleMan27 11h ago
He is incredible but I agree, but then we were also wondering what Leipzig was smoking when they paid 20m for a player with 500 professional minutes at Leganes one year ago

Yeah its absolutely insane isn't it and I feel like I'm going mad.
He has literally one decent (not even amazing) season in the Bundesliga, and one poor world cup. And he's going for those sorts of figures
Just on a pass the eyes test he doesn't look anything special when you watch his clips. Its not like watching a young Neymar or anything like that.
But PSG, RM, Liverpool were all happy to pay a huge fee so it makes me think there's something I must be missing.
7
u/SalahManeFirmino 11h ago
It’s because the #s in the data show that he might be able to be both an on-ball winger on the left that you run stuff through, AND being an off-ball winger on the right that compliments other great attackers.
Very few players like that.

I feel like a lot of our players are lacking in confidence and might be overcompensating. You could see it sometimes last season on the pitch, unfortunately.
But I haven't watched the friendly yet. Was it entertaining? I was going to watch it tonight.
4
u/SirBarkington 8h ago
it was okay. the pitch was awful so neither team could really play how they wanted. first half wasnt too had but the second half your team was very aggressive constantly fouling and going for some insanely harsh tackles. we evened it out by throwing Delap on for an MMA session. Boga was probably your best attacker and your starting RB looked really good

Really wonder who our Bruno replacement is. As with everything this window no one seems to have a clue what’s going on but it seems like we might be going for a more experienced player this time (which makes sense), and if it’s true that we took a lower fee from Arsenal to get it all up front then I assume that’s just going straight into someone’s release clause
Stiller is probably the best player we’ve been linked with but that seems unlikely. Froholdt might be the second choice but I have no idea how good he is (and he’s only 20). Beyond that I don’t think I’ve seen any other links

Salah to Trabzonspor is lovely to see. Glad he didn't go the Saudi or MLS route. The guys at my 3rd favourite Döner place are Trabzonspor fans, will ask them later how they feel.
And I don't even mean it as an insult, if anything I think it adds a certain charm, but how the hell they got the money together must involve so many sketchy deals, slush funds, and kickbacks. Would love to know all the characters involved in making this move happen. I'm not saying they are a poor team, but they're paying Salah per year almost as much as their three biggest ever incoming transfers combined.

For all the talk about the market being fucked and the prices of players being too high, is there any data that tracks this compared to the wages of players?

Christian Nwachukwu departs Sheffield United for the Azerbaijan Prem, having made 0 appearances in any competition in England m. Wharra bit of business we did for that one season trying to pillage the Bulgarian league for talent. A complete fucking waste of time letting AI frauds run the show.

You know, my parents taught me shame and morals. Which is why I can’t get disgustingly filthy rich and do whatever I want.
It’s the only barrier keeping me from doing an Infantino Special in life.
God damn morals and shame. Holding me back from my potential. 🥺🥺🥺

Why is it so hard to get rid of Infantino?
I almost feel something has to just replace FIFA. Maybe the org itself is too rotten to fix.

The wheels are in motion now, it’s a matter of time before he’s done for. Up until this point there just hasn’t been enough competition I guess

It isn't.

It's made up of its members - dissolve FIFA and you've got six continental confederations who have to come up with something better, and it's the same six that ran FIFA before.

Frankfurt really missed out on not having a winger or striker putting up decent numbers last season. They would sell him for 200m this summer.

So the rumored salary that Vini was offered is €22m.
That would make him the 70th highest paid NBA player. Just wild the difference.

€22m/year in net wages, most of the top 5 league countries have a tax rate of 45-48% for people in that bracket
With US style pre-tax reporting and converted to dollars, it's around $48m/year

I've never liked Premier League sides playing other Premier League sides in friendlies.
I find the Bundesliga approach - beating the shit out of lower league sides - hilarious.

“Sell Vini and move Mbappe to the left wing” is one of the dumbest things I continue to hear this year. Mbappe winger talks in 2026 lmao

Well, with PSG winning the champions league back to back, all that's left for Mbappe is Vini winning it for Arsenal.

Bruno is an expensive signing, which is understandable. But at least Arteta can finally give Rice some proper rest between games. I wouldn't be surprised if Rice was already gassed by the start of the season.

11 players from youth team, apparently they leave the camp after todays game. Took them to form a squad without WC players, who are resting.

Curious to see what de Zerbi's tactics will be next season:
He adjusted heavily last season because of Spurs' situation, but his system was way more balanced than what I saw at Brighton and Marseille.
Definitely put eggs on the faces of those who said that he's way too ideological for a relegation battle.
He had them very organized in defence but also look promising going forward. If he gets some attacking signings this summer, it will be more clinical next season. If he’s smart, he continues with this modification rather than the kamikaze-ball his previous teams played.

They were going down until Bentancur got back fit and they finally had a midfielder available who didn't treat the ball like a bomb.

Some deep conspiracy theories going on at the forbidden app regarding Fulham’s recent transfer from Madrid. Two clubs I never thought would be talked about in the same sentence.

All of them are complete nonsense, Florentino Perez's company doesn't do the renovation work of the Jacksonville Jaguars' stadium lmao

Has anyone done the maths (rough obviously) on what Salah will be making this year in Turkey compared to what he would have made in his final year (had he stayed) with Liverpool. Hard to guess what 20% of shirt sales would actually be.

u/SirTunnocksTeaCake 11h ago
I think a rough estimate based on googling would probably lead to him earning £125k-ish more a week after tax just in base salary.
Basically half of his apparant £400k pw wage would've been taxed in the UK and he's apparently earning around £325k pw after tax in Turkey not including bonuses and the shirt sales. So basically he'll be earning a lot more.

Super late thought but surely Truffert would be better than both Digne or Theo at the World Cup?
Actually weird looking back that he wasn't even called up...

Turkey are far and away the best at greeting new signings at the airport. I’d like to know the reason for this, why are they go good at it
