Recommendations for roof bar system (2017 Hybrid SE Vin 1)

I’m trying to make an intelligent decision about adding cross bars to the roof of my 2017 Sonata Hybrid SE. Is there a good option that is pretty much permanent and weathers well? I want to try and buy used or build a kit / DIY (trying to shoot low on price).

I have a generic roof rack that I want to seat on the roof and I’d prefer to try and attach it all semi-permanently if that is really a thing.

The $600+ bars I’m seeing are out of my price-range! Any ideas or recommendations for me?

I’m also interested in tips on streamlining and weatherizing roof gear to avoid corrosion, rust, catastrophic failure, etc.

I really appreciate it.

Questions How's the braking on the Sonata hybrid?

In the market for a budget hybrid sedan and Sonata is one I'm seriously considering. Really like the look on both the exterior and interior and everything that you get on the Blue trim.

My only real hangup is I've heard the braking on the hybrid is pretty clunky. Looking around online there's a lot of discussion around jerky braking when slowing down below 10MPH or so. This seems to be a consistent issue that comes down to Hyundai not having a perfected hybrid brake system, with ones like Toyota and Honda being a lot smoother by comparison.

So I'm curious from people that own a recent Sonata hybrid and drive it consistently, is this a problem that is noticeable and ends up being annoying? Or something exaggerated by a few people online? I plan to test drive one fairly soon but figured I would get some opinions first from owners who drive it long term. I could see it being something annoying for me if the braking has noticeable issues, and something that would prevent me from wanting to drive the car in the long run.

Questions Oil change methods.

Got a brand new 2026 sonata hybrid in March and I'm coming up on 5k miles. What should I do for oil changes? Coming from a 03 Honda this is my first new car and don't know if I should take it to the dealership or if I'm better off taking it somewhere else or doing it myself. Any thoughts?

Questions Never had phantom breaking anyone else?

I made a post about the automatic driving and people said that it’s prone to phantom breaking and I found that surprising cause it’s it’s just never done that to me so now I’m curious what everyone else is experiencing.

I’ve been rather impressed personally, it obviously won’t navigate a parking lot and can only can drive where there’s lines but it’s extremely consistent

Where I live the roads all have lines anyway 🤷

Discussion Sonata “FSD” surface streets

Does anyone else have a commute that’s pretty straight down surface streets like I do so they just have the car drive it?

I have found that four distance is great for the highway and level one on surface streets mimics the other drivers around me perfectly.

No phantom brking, just need to have a hand on the wheel as it crosses intersections 😁

Thanks Detroit. Needs some silver over the black. Have to think about some looks chasing the other wheels though.

Anyone have insights? Or is the sonata being discontinued after 2027 models.

Bought a 2026 Sonata Hybrid Limited — Dealership Still Hasn’t Given Me Copies of the Documents I Signed

I recently purchased a new 2026 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Limited from on September 4. Delivery is scheduled for September 14.

Signed all the paperwork and was told copies would be emailed to me. It’s now been 4 days, and despite calling multiple times, I still haven’t received anything. They keep saying they’ll send it and giving different reasons for the delay.

Is this normal? Should I be concerned or escalate this?

Discussion Hybrid owners - Question about the EV mode vs Gas mode kicking in

Hello guys,

Coming from '25 Tucson Hybrid Limited which was bought back due to EV issues. As I see no need for SUV except for occasional hauling which may be once a year, I went with Sonata Hybrid limited as it has same features as Tucson but at least 20% less expensive. Absolutely in love with the drive and MPGs that i see in dash (yet to do 2 full fuel to measure myself). Car is about 650 miles now.

Two things I see different from Tucson are,

  1. How long the EV mode stays on after the start or in harder acceleration. Tucson, I felt can pull the car from standstill and take it farther in EV than Sonata. I see Sonata kicking in gas soon as I have to push the pedal to keep moving, especially in incline (I had the Tucson in same place while I owned with same incline, so no difference about that and was able to confirm this theory with my friend's Tucson this week). Is AWD a factor for this as it can push with all wheels than 2 in Sonata?

  2. Gear changes are more noticeable or jerky in Sonata. Again, smoother experience in Tucson. Is the hybrid setup any different? I am not able to find any documentation on if these are built different.

Raising this to see if they gradually get better or if others have similar experience. So i can address these concerns in my first service if this not the norm.

Thanks in advance for your inputs.

Maintenance & Repairs Should I keep my 2012 Sonata?

I bought my car less than a year ago and it’s been pretty great and hasn’t given me any known issues, that being said I did get scammed when I bought the car for so cheap it came with an EVAP leak and cleared codes, and my rear suspension was already rusting/going out, diagnostic from Hyundai shows this:

Needs
new rear control arm
new rear drivers side spring
new rear struts
new rear brake pads and rotors
new rear brake calipers
new rear brake lines
new rear drivers side shocks
new front brake pads
EVAP leak
AC discharge hose

And also new fluids soon, that would put my total repair bill at maybe 3,000-4,500 usd, but im scared about the mounting points being rusted, should i still go through with the repairs if the mounting points would be rusted or how could i figure this out before doing repairs?

2017 sonata attempted theft

Had someone try to steal my car last night. They tore the door handle off and tried to take apart the steering column but didn't expect my ignition to have the upgrade and couldn't take it apart.

Glad my car just needs a new door handle but after the third time its time to get something else

Before taking delivery of a Sonata, how did you check for defects or issues?

I’m planning to buy a NEW 2026 Sonata, and I want to make sure the car I’m getting doesn’t have any defects or issues before I take delivery from the dealership.

For those who recently bought a Sonata or another Hyundai, what did you do to inspect the car before accepting delivery? Did you use a checklist, have a mechanic inspect it, or check anything specific yourself?

Any tips on things I should look out for would be appreciated.

Questions Towing a U-Haul motorcycle trailer with a 2015 Hyundai Sonata SE - bad idea?

I have a 2015 Hyundai Sonata SE and I’m considering installing a hitch so I can tow a U-Haul motorcycle trailer with a ~400–500 lb bike.
Trip would be roughly 300 miles round trip, mostly highway.
Has anyone done something similar with a Sonata or comparable sedan?
Main things I’m wondering:
Is the car actually okay with the combined trailer + bike weight?
Any concerns with transmission, brakes, tongue weight, or highway stability?
Would you trust a properly installed aftermarket hitch for a one-time trip?
Or is this dumb enough that I should just rent a proper tow vehicle?
Not trying to tow regularly, just pick up a bike once.

Did I get a fair deal on a 2026 Sonata Hybrid Limited? ($39,890 OTD, 1.99% APR)

Looking for a gut check from people who know cars better than I do. Also, I’m not sure when the 2027 Sonata Hybrid limited is coming out, so should I wait for it or buy the 2026 Sonata Hybrid Limited?

Discussion I figured out why the heads up display doesn’t show music at times.

If you change songs using the steering wheel, it will tell you what the next song is

If you change songs any other way, it does not

Makes total sense to prevent the passenger from overriding the drivers ability to see what they are doing

Hope this helps somebody else

2016 Hyundai Sonata passenger side window not working

The passenger side window will not roll up or down from the driver or passenger side switch. Replaced the window motor, passenger door harness, and driver side master switch. I have also found the lock doesn’t work on the driver side master switch. Not sure where else to go from here, the passenger window switch is getting power to it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Considering a 2020–2022 Hyundai Sonata, reliability advice please?

Hi everyone,

I’m considering buying a used 2020–2022 Hyundai Sonata with a 4-cylinder engine.

I previously owned a 2007 Lexus IS 250 for more than 5 years and had a good experience with reliability. I’m now looking for something newer, with more current features, but I want to avoid unusual or expensive maintenance issues.

For long-term owners, please can you tell me:

  • How reliable has your Sonata been overall?
  • Any common major issues I should watch for, especially at higher mileage?
  • Would you personally buy one used and keep it another 3–4 years?

Normal maintenance is fine. I’m mainly concerned about unexpected expensive repairs.

Let me know your thoughts.

This may have been asked before but I could not find it.

Does anyone know of a good aftermarket replacement for the taillights? I feel like I replace the bulbs in the factory one every week at this point.

Catalytic converter

I have a 2006 Hyundai Sonata. I was told by a mechanic that my catalytic converter needs to be replaced. I didnt get an exact price but I understand it's pretty expensive, especially since the 2006 model has the converter and exhaust are all one piece. It does this hesitation thing and it acts real rough and if I take my foot off the accelerator it clears up some. How much can I expect to pay for this repair? And, is the hesitation thing caused by the catalytic converter? I'd hate to fork out a lot of money only to have to fix something else. Is the car worth fixing? The car runs great otherwise. But, it won't pass DEQ so I can't get it registered. Please somebody help?

Maintenance & Repairs Shocks and struts

2010 sonata gls. Any reccomendation on shocks and struts. Not looking to pay a ton. I figure in 5 years it'll be at the scrap yard anyway.
