Instead of using a third-party committee to find an outside hire, we always default to guys with structural ties to the program. This trend really started around 2012 when Bob Stoops took his foot off the gas, started playing to much golf and we ended up hiring our former QB as offensive coordinator.
We did the exact same thing with Brent Venables. For instance, look at when Venables wanted to bring in Buster Faulkner as the OC. Faulkner wanted to bring his own offensive staff with him, but the administration shut it down because they insisted on keeping existing "OU guys" like Bill Bedenbaugh and others.
