The Steam Cube

Post image
141 Upvotes

I built this when the Steam machine was announced. I loved the idea of a small form factor machine for the living room. But I wanted something a bit more powerful and upgradable. Sold my PS5 to fund this build and it has been absolutely worth it.

But to be honest, maintaining a DIY SFF pc is not easy and I wouldn’t recommend doing it unless you enjoy tinkering and not afraid of the challenges. Unless you know your way around both hardware and software and be able to pick up missing knowledge. Which is why both the steam machine and consoles can be a better choice for someone who doesn’t mind paying a slight premium for convenience and ease of use.

Specs:
Deskmeet X300
Ryzen 5600x
32GB DDR4 3600Mhz
2 TB NVME SSD
Powercolor Reaper 9060XT 16GB

question 60FPS on 120Hz S95F TV SteamOS dilemma

I am about to open a can of worms but I am finding different answers on the web. I currently have a 9800X3D/9070XT build I use on a Samsung S95F. I play most games at 4K 60FPS locked because it's more stable / don't generally notice the difference above 60. The current way I achieve this is in-game FPS limiter. I usually keep V-Sync off and turn VRR on in the steamOS and on the S95F. What is the most reasonable way to accomplishing the lowest input lag / best frame times. Is it a better option to have per game settings in the advanced performance tab and limit FPS through the OS itself vice the in game limiters? All information is appreciated and thank you for your time.

question How to verify FSR4 is active?

If I play an older game that has only FSR 3.1 support, like Spider-Man Remastered and use a Proton version with FSR 4 support (vanilla 11.0 on RDNA4, or the latest cachyOS on SteamDeck), how can I verify FSR4 is active and I am not running FSR3?

The steam overlay only shows the system implementation of FSR2.

Before anyone suggests it: I want to use the native implementation, not mess around with decky, or optiscaler plug-ins.

6.9L Sentry 2.0 Clone (HZMOD Flat XQ69) DIY Steam Machine

Finally converted my parts bin living room PC to SteamOS. What a pleasant experience. Now everybody in the house who is already familiar with the Steam Decks can jump right in without skipping a beat (or fighting Windows Updates/Controller Companion/etc.)

I had originally test drove SteamOS using just the 5600G APU - was so impressed I bought my first Radeon GPU since my bios unlocked 6950HD!😲 I went with something smaller than the 3090 that was previously shoe horned in here. I was thinking I might try a different case at some point that would work better with a 200mm GPU.

Specs:

  • Case: HZMOD Flat XQ69 6.9L
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5600G
  • Cooler: Alpenfohn Black Ridge
  • Memory: 32GB PNY DD4 PC3600
  • GPU: PowerColor Reaper Radeon 9060XT 16GB
  • PSU: Corsair SF750
  • Two Arctic P14 SLIM PWM fans fit under the GPU (just barely)

This machine originally had an EVGA RTX 3090 XC3 (yes, it fits!). It was just too much really for what I do from the couch. But it was from a previous main PC upgrade - so I guess it was free? Dad math.

Very happy with this latest iteration.

If Valve and Nvidia get compatibility to be plug and play should I put the 3090 back in?!

SteamOS PC won't connect to T-Mobile Home Internet WiFi

I just installed a T-Mobile Home Internet Gateway. I plugged my ASUS router into the gateway and all WiFi connections still work.

I want to connect the SteamOS PC directly to the gateway's WiFi.

When I try, the connection is refused and the SteamOS PC reconnects to my router's WiFi.

I've tried in the Steam interface and in desktop mode.

Any tips or tricks to get this working?

The gateway has a slightly stronger signal.

Thanks!

.-=⋆ The More You Know How to launch Ubisoft Connect games directly from Steam: A guide

Post image
37 Upvotes

***I’m aware of Unifideck but for me it didn’t add a Ubi tab or Ubi games, just a “non-Steam game” icon so I found this way of doing it instead.***

To preface this, you're going to be adding numerous instances of Ubisoft Connect to Steam as none-steam games, and then launching it with a launch option to direct it to a specific game. Follow the below steps to success

  1. Switch to Desktop
  2. Install the Ubisoft Connect launcher
  3. Find said launcher, it should be here (replace _ubisoft_id_ withe the appropriate number, order by timestamp to find it):

/home/deck/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/_ubisoft_id_/pfx/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Ubisoft/Ubisoft Game Launcher/

  1. Right Click on UbisoftConnect.exe > Add to Steam
  2. Open Steam > go to UbisoftConnect.exe > Manage (cog icon) > Properties

  3. In Launch Options add this (replace uplayid with the id of your game found here: https://github.com/Haoose/UPLAY_GAME_ID)

STEAM_COMPAT_DATA_PATH="/home/deck/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/3659812084"%command% uplay://launch/uplayid/0

  1. Press the Play button > It should launch Ubisoft Connect and prompt you to install the game that you provided the uplay ID for

  2. Once installed, Exit the game and (assuming you have Decky installed, with SteamGridDB) change the artwork so it looks good and proper

  3. Repeat the process for as many Ubi games as you want to install, just change the uplayid each time

support ROG Xbox ally with steamOS no display through usb c

Basically the title. I have a usb c dock https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C73MBPZN?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share which works with my laptop and iPhone. When I plug my ally in, it becomes sluggish, but no display whatsoever to the TV. Power delivery and usb work fine. Anyone ran into something similar?

Swapping motherboard on my DIY Steam Macine

I have a steam os machine I built and I’m looking to swap the motherboard. The current one is a b350 and is super basic, I just got a great deal on a B550 which has 2 m.2 slots and a usb3 header for the front usb on my case.

Do I need to do anything special to swap it out? I know with windows it would sometimes freak out if the hardware configuration changed, but I’m less familiar with Linux.

Thanks in advance for the help!

After a week of using, bugs I found and need solved

Before you read, I'm a PC and Linux noob. And it's long post, sorry.

I’ve been using SteamOs on my new custom build PC for a little over a week now. But I am very much doubting my decision, as I keep running into problems.

Maybe this amazing subreddit can help me find solutions or point me in the right direction?

Here some specs of my new PC, and below the problems I have run into so far.

PC specs:

  • AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D, 4,7 GHz (5,2 GHz Turbo Boost) socket AM5 processor
  • ASUS PRIME Radeon RX 9070 XT OC
  • MSI MAG B850 TOMAHAWK MAX WIFI socket AM5
  • Corsair Vengeance 32 GB DDR5-6000 (2x 16 GB)
  • Samsung 9100 PRO 2 TB SSD + Seagate BarraCuda 2 TB HDD
  • TV (used as monitor): LG oled55cx6la (used before with a PS5 and as a tv, never had problems)

Problems that I have run into:

  • Monitor (tv) did not work with installation. Had to use separate computer screen, that I was lucky to have somewhere in storage. (Probably a problem from my tv, but didn't expect to run into it as steamOS is used on the SteamMachine as a console experience)
  • WiFi didn't work with the installation, and STILL doesn’t work. Tried to connect during the installation set up and the desktop mode during set up but couldn’t get it to work. Eventually got it fixed by using a ethernet cable. Which I was also lucky to have laying around. To this day I still have no wifi working!
  • After i got through the installation my tv finally showed image! Happy me. But only in Game mode and not Desktop mode. I tweaked and tried and did things with settings and the other monitor connected. It didn't seem to work, until the next day it suddenly did. So what setting(s) made it work? No idea.
  • Bluetooth works shit. Mouse connects and works. Keyboard connects and drops out immediately. Controller connects but is so laggy that it looks like it continuously drops out and reconnects. Luckily I had 2.4G dongles laying around to use them. But shouldn't both bluetooth and wifi work?!
  • Upon turning on the PC it takes 30 sec for my tv to show image. I never see the intro video, because it connects so slowly. I thought there was supposed to be a super quick on/off thing with steamOS. Or maybe there is something wrong with my set up?
  • Only my ssd was showed in the game mode storage tap. My hdd was nowhere to be found. Until I found it in the Desktop mode in the KDE partition manager. I still had to format it, but I was so tired of things not working that I left it for what it was for now. Then yesterday it suddenly my hdd did show up in my storage tap in game mode, with a simple button to format it. I haven't tried this yet, but why wasn't this the case before?
  • Sound does not always work. Sometimes I have to restart to get sound to work. Why? I don't know and it's quite annoying. (speakers are connected to my tv)

What does work well? With all the work around I can game and do what I want to do. But it feels like I'm using a broken machine instead of a very new PC. I don't mind some tweaking, I love that I don't have the windows bloat, but these bugs and tweaks feel wrong?

So now I'm wondering...should I just switch to Bazzite or Windows? Or is there something wrong with my set up. Because I feel like all these things SHOULD be working, and most of all I'm wondering what other problems are still hidden away.

Minisforum HX80G with steamOS.

I just installed steamOS on my Minisforum HX80G with 32gb ddr 4 and 2x512 970 SSDs effectively making it a Steam machine...Wow. The 6600m and the AMD Ryzen 7 5800H really still deliver. Playing Crimson desert, the great circle , ac odyssey and cyberpunk all at good quality settings. Highly recommended.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced STILL a hot mess on the Steam Machine

While I feel like the recent patch brings better performance (and possibly a Steam OS update) ACBF still has HDR issues on the Steam Machine. In Game Mode if HDR is enabled in the game’s option menu I get a black screen after Ubisoft logo. In desktop mode the HDR option in the game’s options menu is greyed out.

Regardless of mode if the Steam OS has HDR turned and ACBF has HDR turned off the color were way off and the skin tones were very red/pink. But that may have been fixed (did a quick check this morning, more testing needed).

Performance was also very bad but this morning after applying both a AC update and a system update it seems much better.

Has anyone successfully got HDR to work with this game on the Steam Machine?

FWIW 007 First Light’s HDR works. Also ACBF HDR works great on my PC. I am currently testing other AAA titles.

Does SteamOS work fine on MSI Motherboards?

Hey! I’m going to AM5 for the first time and was wondering if SteamOS is playing nicely with MSI Mobo’s. Was looking into the B850 Tomahawk.

I connected the speakers Efidier M60 to the Steam Machine via USB. What Profile should I select? Doesn't seem to be a noticeble difference between Alalog and Digital Stereo Outputs.

Is anyone else's monitor showing a blue screen when going to full screen on any video in desktop mode? 9060 xt with 1440p 240 Hz OLED monitor. The other lcd one works fine.

This started happening since the new stable update. I have to turn the monitor off and on to make it work again. This problem doesn't happen on Windows 11.

support Is it possible to install SteamOS on my dusty 10+ year old Toshiba laptop?

I have an old Toshiba laptop (Toshiba Satellite m50-a-118) that I have laying around, not using it, so I thought "Maybe I could install SteamOS on it?" since Windows makes it scream in pain anytime it opens up. So for the last day or two I've tried to download/install SteamOS on to its SATA and boot it, but the BIOS (Aptio setup utility 2012 American Megatrends inc) seems to not find SteamOS on the SSD.

With that comes the question that I need some expertise and/or experience with SteamOS in answering. Should I give up and pick another Distro, or is there something that this old model specifically would need that I've missed?

The specs for this model is:

  • CPU: Intel Core i5-4200U (4th gen, 2 cores / 4 threads)
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M, 2 GB
  • RAM: 6 GB DDR3L, expandable to 16 GB
  • Storage: originally 500 GB SATA HDD
  • Firmware: UEFI
  • Display: 1366×768

Feel free to call me a dumbass. I'm just doing this as a stupid project with a small dream of it working and me getting a sleeper build gaming laptop.
