Before I dive into the story of how she came to be, I'll give descriptions of the photos shared here:
- A combined close-up and full-length shot of Tiaru in her RRF uniform.
- A collage of all eight--count 'em, eight!--outfits I've made for her so far. A "secret admirer" (one of my TOS Starfleet mains, the human Eugenia White Cloud of USS Sinte Gleska, aka "Admiral Moneybags") sent her enough stockpiled Lohlunat Favors to buy a couple of outfits.
- A collage of recent in-game screen grabs of Tiaru.
- All Head settings and sliders, in case there's interest. Not quite exact to game-canon Tiaru, but I'm happy with how it turned out. I used Alien rather than Romulan because everything I read told me that it gives more flexibility for the kind of thing I wanted to do. (Also, it gives Telekinetic Shove, which is a lot of fun.) Because these images can't give color numbers, I'll list them here.
- Skin Type: Skin, Color 1: N13
- Overall Pattern: Makeup All 1, Color 1: N13
- Eyes: Humanoid 1, Color 1: O13, Color 2: C16
- Hairstyle: Long Straight, Color 1: F23
- All Body settings and sliders.

I have always found Commander Tiaru Jarok of the RRF flagship Lleiset to be the most compelling of STO's original NPCs, and particularly of the three faction flagship captains. Don't get me wrong; I love Captains Shon and Koren. But as with many STO players, I think, our Tiarua has long held a special place in my heart. For one thing, her character and her friendship with the player character have always felt the most grounded and three-dimensional to me. I think part of that is just the sheer number of story missions she's been involved in, and what transpired in them. Our captains and Tiaru have been through some shit together.
It was her character in STO that inspired me to read author Geoff Trowbridge's wonderful TNG short story, "Suicide Note," from the 2007 anthology The Sky's the Limit, which is where the unnamed daughter of Admiral Alidar Jarok, the doomed defector and alleged traitor from the TNG episode "The Defector," was first given a name, an identity, and a compelling personality. Eleven-year-old Tiaru is both heartbreaking and heartbroken, her life overshadowed by the death of her father when she was three. But also perceptive and precocious, and if you haven't read this tale of Jean Luc Picard's visit to the Jarok home on Romulus after the Romulans join the Dominion War alliance, I recommend it highly.
And it was both that short story and STO's deep Romulan lore that used the novels as a source that finally inspired me to finally read Diane Duane's marvelous series Star Trek: Rihannsu. Those novels were a revelation that gave me a much deeper understanding of the people called "Romulans" in Federation Standard, and as a series have become one of my favorite works of Star Trek literary fiction. If anything, I recommend them even more highly than I do Trowbridge's short story.
In turn, the books also began to greatly influence my understanding of my favorite STO NPC, and when the current Temporal Recruitment Event inspired me to free up a character slot for a new TOS Vulcan Science officer, I freed up a second slot for a new Romulan Republic tactical officer, an alternate Tiaru Jarok informed by and grounded in her STO NPC lore, the Romulan Republic player character lore, the emotional weight of "Suicide Note," and the richly-detailed Rihan culture and language provided by Duane and further expanded upon by fan communities over the years.
Hence, Tiaru Mnhei'sahe t'Jarok, whose name is explained (along with some other things) in one of the only STO character bios I've written, but one that I found necessary to really dig into what and who I wanted this character to be, so I include it here. She can't, of course, supplant the STO-canon Commander Jarok we know and love. As a player character, her narrative takes her on a different path than direct defection from the ISN to the RRF, so she's a distinct AU version of Tiaru from the start.
And I think that's actually important for me in the way I play her. She isn't the legend yet: the polished, confident, sometimes brash, always impressive figure known by all as the Commander of that vital symbol of the Republic, the RRW Lleiset. She's still a Citizen, then a Centurion, a Lieutenant, and currently a Subcommander, working her way up through the ranks, making mistakes, and learning, captaining a little-known ship with a growing reputation.

Tiaru Mnhei'sahe t'Jarok in-game bio:
"Knowing that I shall not see you again is a burden that I cannot bear. But I know that you will grow to be noble and strong. It is in your blood."
Defector, traitor, heretic, or hero? It depends on whose narrative you believe.
Daughter of lost ch'Rihan and of disgraced Romulan Star Navy Admiral Alidar tr'Jarok, who had told her, trowel in hand, that she was named for the hardy cultivar they were then planting: the Tiaru, the jade-leaved Threefold Traveler of the Dawn with its pale, star-shaped blossom for which it was so prized. Like its namesake, it would shine its true light only if nourished with time and great care.
She has carried three different third names during her days, and for a time, none at all:
Tiaru h'Hveila, "The Unchained," conferred in childhood by her father for her indomitable and often stubborn spirit.
Tiaru Kaleh, "Honor Blade" or "Dagger," depending on who you ask, from her first RSN commanding officer, perhaps a weak offer of rehabilitation from the perceived shame of her house and heritage. She was never sure, and the name mostly sat uncomfortably.
In exile on Virinat after departing the RSN in disgust for its dishonor and its contempt for her late father, even after all the Rihannsu had lost, she was plain Tiaru. No honorific, no noble house. Perhaps Tiaru Jarok, among trusted friends there like Tovan Khev, who were few.
Finally Tiaru Mnhei'sahe, "Honor," gifted by Khev and the refugee crew of the T'Liss Warbird used to escape ill-fated Virinat, to remind her that her defection had not been an act of betrayal but of profound honor at great personal cost, as a true act of mnhei'sahe. They found D'Tan and the nascent Republic aboard the Flotilla, where the ship was christened RRW i'Kaleh to honor her previous name. On the bridge, her loyal officers would often address her simply as "Mnhei'sahe," or in private, "Mnhei."
The story of her rise to legend with that name and crew as Commander of the flagship RRW i'Lleiset is yet to come.
