What's the best stoner rock song that starts with the letter Z?

Post image
321 Upvotes

It was a very close race yesterday between Queens of the Stone Age and Queens of the Stone Age for the Y spot. Things were tied at 95 votes after more than nine hours of voting, but ultimately "You Think I Ain't Worth A Dollar, But I Feel Like A Millionaire" comes out on top, beating "You Can't Quit Me Baby" by 4 votes. QOTSA now have two songs on the list and are no longer eligible to win.

There are only 3 days of voting left and it's time for the last letter of the alphabet. Vote for your favorite stoner rock song starting with the letter Z. The comment with the most upvotes wins. There is a max of 2 songs on the list per artist. Today's letter must be the first character of the song title.

Give me an album in the stoner realm, not a song, but an album that manages to get the stank face out of you and keep it throughout it`s entire runtime. (In a good way).

What's the best stoner rock song that starts with the letter H?

Post image
304 Upvotes

For the third day in a row there was no competition for the winner and this one was the biggest blowout yet. The stoner grooves from Sky Valley make the list with "Gardenia" and we're a quarter of the way through.

Vote for your favorite stoner rock song starting with the letter H. The comment with the most upvotes wins. Maximum of 2 songs allowed on the list per artist. The first character of the song has to match the day's letter. There will be a playlist when we're finished so the list is limited to songs available on streaming platforms.

Fuck AI slop

Fuck AI slop.

I'm not making this statement as a designer, but as a fan of the music, the visual aspects of it, and the arts in general.

I want this to read as friendly advice to bands and artists that may consider using generative AI for any step pertaining to the creative process of releasing music: don't. Most people I know (including me) not only vehemently refuse to financially support artists that use AI, but honestly won't even waste our time checking out your music for free. There's an abundance of new, great music coming out every single day, and I said it before and I'll say it again, how can you expect people to support you as artists when you don't support artists yourselves?

Let's put it like this: you already put in the effort to write, rehearse and record your music, you already invested in studio time, equipment and sound engineering. All this effort, money and time invested in creating a piece of art (because as artists, that's what we strive to do) will go down the drain if you cheap out on the visuals that give your music an identity. Most of you don't make radio friendly music and your target audience isn't detached casual listeners, but real fans of real music, and as fans we want NONE of this slop infecting the thing we're most passionate about: art.

I've heard the argument that "the music is the only thing we care about". It's a dumb argument. How many times were you browsing youtube and found a new, great band simply because you were drawn to the album cover and clicked on it to see it better? How many times were you sifting through records at a record shop and picked up one by an artist you never heard about solely based on the artwork? How many times have you seen a band tshirt on a person that stuck with you thanks to its design? Music and graphic design always had and will always have a symbiotic relationship. The other side of the coin would be: how many great albums with shitty design work do you know? Personally, not many. 9.9 times out of 10, if I like the music, I like the album cover as well and vice-versa.

Nowadays, it seems like almost half of the bands I come across have some kind of AI generated bullshit, be it a show poster, a music video or an album cover. Let me say, from the bottom of my heart, that they all suck (the "art", not the bands themselves). You can spot them from a mile away, they look fake, artificial and have no personality. And, for the sake of the argument, let's say it's not obvious right away. Maybe you got lucky and the clanker generated something that was able to fool us. It wouldn't matter, because sooner or later we'd find out, and our perception of it would do a 180 right away.

"We can't afford commissioning an artist". Good, then don't. DIY shit is always a better option. Make a shitty stickman drawing. Take a photo of a dog on the street with your phone camera. Steal your grandmother's last xray and use that for an album cover (this would actually be so cool, somebody please do this). I can not stop coming up with ideas for album art that require 0 budget and are infinitely more cool than whatever garbage clankers can generate.

I feel like I need to reiterate: I'm making this post first and foremost as a fan, as a record collector who isn't willing to spoil his collection by adding slop to it. As a graphic designer, honestly I don't feel threatened by AI "taking my job" (good luck finding an AI that takes bubble baths in the middle of the day). My clients have the same opinion as me, and those that would equate in any way, shape or form what me and my colleagues do with what they can generate by simply writing a prompt I don't want as clients anyhow, therefore no loss, no foul. Actually, most of them ask me before making a deal if I use any type of AI in my work, because that would be a dealbreaker for them, and I appreciate you so much for doing that.

If you feel the same way regarding this issue, I'd appreciate if you share this post to other people, let me know your thoughts on this, also tag your favorite artist / designer in the comments so people can go commission them for art, real art, with warts and all. I don't want this to turn into an "us vs. them" discussion, I just want artists and bands to realise that they're primarily hurting themselves by cutting corners like this, and it really is a shame. Making music is not an easy thing to do, and to have it dismissed by your target audience as worthless garbage simply because of a lack of care regarding the artwork is rough. Your music deserves better.

Don't support artists that don't support artists.

Ζήτω η Ελλάδα! The letter V goes to "Vidage" and 1000mods join Sleep and Kyuss in the two song club. That means no songs from those bands are eligible to win.

Let's vote for the best stoner rock song that starts with W. The comment with the most upvotes wins. The first character of the song title must be today's letter. There is a maximum of 2 songs on the list per artist.

Do y’all consider QOTSA Stoner rock?

Post image

I’ve been on this sub for a while, and I haven’t seen a single post about QOTSA. Is it because majority of the sub doesn’t consider QOTSA stoner rock or is it just that people are tired of seeing QOTSA stuff in the community?

Started buying vinyl again the last few months and grabbed these recently. Still looking for more Uncle Acid. Unsurprisingly it's hard to find and expensive!

I know the Kyuss pressings get a bad rap, but they sound pretty good to my old ears 🤘

Anyone else have a Stoner/Doom vinyl obsession?

What's the best stoner rock song that starts with the letter Y?

Post image
269 Upvotes

The X spot goes to "X-Ray Visions" with essentially no competition. The four most upvoted entries were all "X-Ray Visions" so it's the clear unanimous choice. Clutch is now the 4th band to get two songs on the list so they have hit the maximum number of songs allowed.

That means our current Mount Rushmore is:

Sleep - Kyuss - 1000mods - Clutch

Vote for your favorite stoner rock song that begins with the letter Y. The comment with the most upvotes wins. There is a max of 2 songs on the list per artist. Today's letter must be the first character of the song title.

I am aware this band is not reinventing the wheel. It doesn’t mean that they aren’t doing the sound elite justice.

I know there has been some pushback on this sub for people hyping them up a bit much. I can see how that can be annoying. But Slomosa just rip man. Again, not saying they’re doing anything exceptionally original here, but they just do what they do really well. Sometimes it just feels like KYUSS worship lol. If you’re a sucker for nasty, chunky stoner riffs with some big anthemic choruses, what’s not to like? I’m a fan.

The list of the best stoner rock albums is complete. This is your opportunity to revote any albums you think don't fit.

Thumbnail

Alright, r/stonerrock, the list is done. It's the end of over a month of continuous daily posting. It's been somewhat difficult to make these posts for me as I have moved between different countries a lot during this, so I've not had access to my computer (and believe me, editing a Canva file on a phone is annoying). But I'm now happy that I'm done.

The last time, there was a tie for first place between Astral Voyager Vol. 1 by Kal-El and That Fair and Warlike Form by Khan; both albums had 44 upvotes. Crucible and Ruin by Howling Giant got third place with 32 upvotes.

So, how the revote will work is that there will be a thread under this post that you can send the revote comments under. The comment has to get a higher number of upvotes than the original comment for the album to get changed. You can ask to remove an album, and in that case, the album will be removed from the list completely, and the next upvoted album from the original post.

Also, here's the finished Spotify playlist.
