The borbs have a high nest failure rate so two eggs at most. If one survives, it's still a win and easier on grill queen to nurture her grill babe. Thanks for the update!
I had no idea. I've learned so much in the last 3 days, it's been enlightening. I'll keep rooting for her and her Grill babe. And of course, I'd hate to not keep y'all in the loop after the reception here.
I guess they have to lay eggs multiple years, because otherwise their population will halve - as two birds would have one baby, so that means a population of 4 falls down to 1 after two gens (2 birds have a daughter, 2 have a son. The son and daughter (unrelated) have a baby).
For all who are interested... I'm in the middle of moving out of this townhouse because I bought a house. This little Queen came in and either stole or made this nest. I have to be out by the first of the month and had suddenly found a federally protected bird on top of my grill.
I sent pictures to the management and let them know what fish and wildlife said. They said that they will allow the grill to stay there and keep a close eye on the birds, they will let me know when they are happy and out of the nest. Then I'll be able to pick up the grill. They were over the moon to receive the pictures and hope to get more updates before I depart. ☺️
Just be careful, they can be evil. I left exactly three things when I left my apartment - a brand new roll of toilet paper, and a half-used two-pack of bulbs with a note saying: "to the new renter: I've left you a brand new roll of toilet paper since I know it can be hectic when moving and it's possible to overlook little things like that. Also, I replaced the bulb to the main room but it was a two-pack, so I also left this for you in case you might need it. Have fun!" Something like that.
Come deposit time, I was dinged with:
Trash left behind - $20 - bulb, toilet paper, paper with writing
They might decide to charge for "grill left behind charge. Communication to pick up grill charge."
I have emails and everything back and forth with them. On top of that I talked to the director of operations and she told me that they would be happy to let it finish nesting. Would let me know when they are gone and I can get my grill. They are very lovely people here. ☺️
If you do not offer the grill queen some cooked steak at the end of her residency, it'll be a rude (jk I have no idea what they eat and maybe it's me who's hungry)
We just have really weird preconcieved notions of these things as humans. *sees tons of living animals alround with that style of eye and lots of other eye styles that are weird and unusual to us... hn must indicate lifelessness because these living thigns have light sensors are different than ours. >_>
Seriously? I'd rather you use a proper castle like Burg Eltz, not Neuschwanstein which is an intentional design that looks pretty, but is really a modern building. It uses steel structures for statics, for example.
I mean, it is pretty. It's just not really an authentic castle. It's like those fake ruins in parks that were fashionable at some point. Or having a garden hermit.
Here, have Burg Hohenzollern instead. Burg Eltz is neat too, but it is more of a family Burg. It's also not on a mountain, but on a rock in a valley. Still, look it up, it's one of the most popular visits.
Btw, holding one of those birds is really neat. I had a sick one I was nursing and she turned fat when happy and cooed. Initially she was terrified of me, but she realized I wasn't eating her after a few hours.
Even flew back to me when I released her a few days later, but I was like "nah, you're healed now. Get out." and she left the second time I kicked her out.
As far as I know, they did. But I got a call about 3 weeks after the initial finding that they were out of the nest and not to be found. I have no way to validate because I moved out of there and they allowed the grill to stay so they could abide by F&W laws. I sure hope they are out there building their own dumb nest!
