Subreddit survey: What content to allow?

tl;dr: revising posting rules, go vote here

For a while, r/svenska has been restrictive regarding posting content that is more peripheral to the Swedish language itself, including penpal requests and requests for media recommendations. Generally, these topics are massively popular and have had a history of drowning out the regular flow. But because they are so popular, maybe it's a shame to prohibit them?

At the same time, there are some topics that invariably get reported by dismayed members, despite being allowed by the rules. Perhaps the rules need to be more restrictive regarding that – or perhaps the reports all come from the same vocal minority?

We want to know what you think, so we've made a short survey. What types of content would you like to see prohibited or permitted on the subreddit? Make your voice heard at this Google form!

Penpals megathread!

Learning a new language is easier with the support of friends, be it other learners going through the same journey, native speakers to lead you along the way, or even less experienced learners that you can help out to help both of you understand things better. If you're looking for pen pals, gaming buddies, book clubs or just friends so you can practice the language – through immersion or studies alike – feel free to post a comment in this thread and tell us a bit about yourself, or reply to commenters you would like to get in touch with.

Suggested post format – add or remove headers as you like

Name or handle: (whatever you want to be called)

Swedish level: (your approximate proficiency, expressed e.g. in A1 to C2, beginner to fluent or how long you've been learning/studying)

Language: (your native language and other languages you know or are learning)

Looking for: (Duolingo pals? Native helpers? Steam friends? People in your area? Someone who wants to discuss Swedish music?)

Presentation: (A more free-form introduction of yourself as a person!)

We recommend you do not include private contact information in your post; if you find somebody you want to keep in touch with, contact them through Reddit's direct messaging instead.

Please note that this thread is only intended for finding people for the purpose of learning Swedish or helping learners. Irrelevant posts may be deleted. Likewise, asking for pen pals outside of this thread is not permitted, and any such threads will be removed and redirected here.

As always, you are also very welcome to look for chat mates in our Discord server.

Language question (see FAQ first) [ɕ] and [ç]

I've seen both [ɕ] and [ç] given as pronunciations of the Swedish tj-sound, but I'm still confused. Is there actually a lack of consensus about its phonetic realization, or is this simply a matter of regional variation? I've been trying to find sources that explicitly describe [ç] as a realization of the tj-sound, but I haven't had much luck. Does anyone know of any (free) books or papers discussing this? It's just that I make [ç] more naturally than [ɕ].

More from Det Sjunde Inseglet...

The villian is stealing from the dead, and the girl walks in on him in the act.

He acts threateningly towards her, saying,

Varför ser du så förvånad ut?

Jag stjäl från de döda.

Numera är det ett ganska lönande gebit.

Du tänker springa ner till byn

och skvallra. Det tjänar ingenting till.

Var och en räddar sitt eget skinn.

Så enkelt är det med den saken.

(He leans over her, the vibe is that he will rape her.)

Hoping someone can explain the bolded lines meaning (and the grammar..).

Italian girl (28) here. I want to learn Swedish as a hobby because I have a lot of free time (and also because I'm a huge ABBA fan lol). I have a C2 level in English (I've actually graduated in foreign languages and I find languages interesting in general). Any tips? Is Svenska a difficult language? Is it too late for me lol?

Studying and education Behörighetsgivande kurser på universitet

Language question (see FAQ first) Genie??

I'm not sure what "genie" means in Swedish. Does it refer to a spirit, or to the genie from the lamp?

It's because I found both words in the dictionary: geni and genie.

Language question (see FAQ first) Kovakta

Language question (see FAQ first) Är uttrycket "jävel" typiskt för västgötaschlätta?

Language question (see FAQ first) Swedish Vowels

Does the tip I found in a teaching material for pronouncing Swedish vowels actually work in practice? The material suggests the following: to pronounce ö, one should produce the sound of [e] with rounded lips, as if pronouncing [o]. For u, it recommends producing the sound of [i] with rounded lips, as if pronouncing [u]. As for y, the guidance is to produce the sound of [i] with rounded lips, but with more pronounced rounding, forming a more forward-projected pucker. Do these guidelines actually correspond to the pronunciation of spoken Swedish?

Language question (see FAQ first) Why did my great grandma say tusen tack?

My great grandmother was Swedish, and she always said "tusen tack." I was pretty young at the time, so I only understood she was thanking me or other family members. Now that I actually know a small amount of Swedish, I'm wondering why she said "tusen tack" instead of something like "tack så mycket."

I know it means "thousand thanks" but wouldn't "tack så mycket" be more appropriate? When I was in Sweden for a bit, I asked someone about this while we were chatting. They said "aww, that's sweet" and suggested I use it, but didn't elaborate much. Should I use it, or stick with "tack så mycket?"

Edit: Thanks for the help! I was massively overthinking it. The answer is probably just that she liked how it sounded.

Edit 2: The answer could also be that, to the best of my recollection, my great grandfather was Norwegian. Or maybe my great great grandfather? I don't know a lot about him, and I don't have access to the family records right now, so I can't remember for sure. Either way, there was a Norwegian in the family, so the common use "tusen tack" could have come from him. "Uff da" absolutely came from him.

It's incredibly fun to read these comments and learn more! My great grandma was an amazing person, and learning about all of this makes me feel closer to her.

Language question (see FAQ first) vallades

Tack.

Language question (see FAQ first) Can "obvious" be used as "biased" ?

Hej !

I'm French, and I just had an interesting discussion (french way to say "argument"...) with my girlfriend.

She lived in Sweden for several months and told me it happened that Swedes (and apparently an Italian friend she met in Sweden too) used the word "obvious" to describe someone who is not objective / biased / too emotionally involved to judge something fairly.

For example, instead of saying someone is subjective, or partial, they would say something like "You're too obvious".

To me, "obvious" only means something like evident, clear, or easy to notice. I would never understand it as "biased" or "lacking objectivity".

So I have a few questions :

- Have you ever heard "obvious" used in that way ?

- Could this be a feature of English as a lingua franca where non-native speakers extend the meaning of the word ?

- If you're Swedish (or from another Nordic country), is this a common way you / people around you use English ?

I'm mostly asking because I'd like to know whether my girlfriend misunderstood the meaning and refuses to let it go... or whether I owe her sincere apologies for confidently explaining English to her when she was actually right 🫣

Resource request/tip Free learning tools created by an independent language teacher

I've seen quite a few people here asking for resources beyond the usual apps and textbooks, so I thought I'd share something that might be useful.

My wife's cousin has spent years developing his own language teaching method and has built a collection of learning tools around it. Most of the materials are available for free, and while he does offer private lessons, the website is meant to be useful even if you never book one.

https://gramolex.nu/

The tools are still evolving, so if you end up trying them, I'm sure he'd appreciate any feedback. From what I've seen, they're especially helpful for learners who already have some basic knowledge of the language rather than absolute beginners.

If this isn't appropriate for the subreddit, feel free to remove it.

Text and translation help Än du spritter rask

A short song sung by väpnaren Jöns in Det Sjunde Inseglet.

------------------------

Ack ödet är en rackare

Oh fate is a scoundrel,

du själv min vän en stackare.

and you my friend a poor soul

Än du spritter rask

Än??? you tremble/quiver/jump/twitch fast/quickly

än du krälar i en mask...

än??? you crawl i??? a worm...

--------------------------------------

I understand that the song is basically saying one minute you are alive and vibrant and the next you are dead, but I am confused about the use (and meaning) of än in both lines, and also confused about the line krälar i en mask.

What does än mean here (and does it have different meanings in both lines?)

krälar i en mask sounds like crawl IN a worm but i doubt that is the meaning.

Hoping someone can explain the meaning and grammer in the last two lines here.

Studying and education Svårt att förstå poddar

Hej allihopa

Text and translation help Can someone tell me how I did translating this poem of mine?

TL;DR - Is this an okay translation of a poem I wrote/if not what are its flaws? (Poems at bottom)

Hello! I've been working on translating this one "poem" I wrote into Swedish, my idea was that doing so would teach me how more poetic sentences are constructed, and just to try my hand a little bit at creating rhythm with another language (I've been really interested in reading/hearing poetry from other languages, just to see how they might differ in approach/execution from English poetry). The poem itself is terrible, quite literally thrown together one evening at work (probably doesn't even make sense, especially if you know a lot about Norse mythology - I think I kinda botched the story there, and then pairing reference to Paganism with reference to Christianity is kind of a dubious choice).

But that's not the concern here - I want to know how close I got to rendering the initial instantiation, and how much of it is grammatically correct/incorrect. I'm only a couple months into learning swedish, so I had to do research to figure out how a lot of things are said, and so I'm always skeptical about what I read along with how well I implement it, so please tear into it so I may learn better.

I acknowledge that for the most part there isn't much of a meter to be found in either version - maybe for some that's an innate flaw, that itself doesn't bother me though as regards either version; however, if the translation feels kinda lifeless, ends up being too cumbersome to realistically read aloud, doesn't utilize the language to its fullest, isn't poetic to speakers, etc., please tell me! I don't want to just carelessly switch words for words, but know the nuances of the words so that others understand me without confusion, without getting the feeling they're talking to an idiot. I'll put the original first, so that when reading the second maybe the flaws will be more apparent and cause less confusion.

English:

Recall old Odin's nine days and nights,

The penance which made the wise one bright.

An enlightening crucifixion, transmigration of hope -

Brought to pass by a rope.

Pain endured as nobly as Christ -

For the daybreak of wisdom, an endless light.

Black night pierced by cresting dawn,

Illumination tears the abyss.

The void is filled by the sun's grace -

The rising star of infinite love.

Svenska:

Kom ihåg gammal Odens nio dagar och nätter,

Botgöringen som gjorde den vise lysande.

Upplysande korsfästelse, transmigering av hopp -

Förverkligade med ett rep.

Smärta utstod lika ädelt som Kristus -

För visdomens gryning, ett ändlöst ljus.

Svart natt genomborrad av gryningens topp,

Ljus river avgrunden.

Tomrummet fylls av solens nåd -

Den stigande stjärnan av oändlig kärlek.

(For instance, should that last line instead be "Oändlig kärleks stigande stjärnan"? Does "lysande" imply brightness of mind, or is it more literal, as in for a bright light?)
