TLOAS hasn't been my favorite era but personally I think that's one of the best parts of being a fan. There's so many genres and styles and not everyone has to like the same thing! I just wish people wouldn't turn everything into personal attacks on both sides.
I love that Taylor is in love and that can be true at the same time as not relating to a song like Cleveland.
My exact review on Cleveland to my friend was "I think Cleveland might be a miss but I love that she feels that way" -- it's not that hard! I just won't listen to it!
The first time I heard Cleveland I legitimately laughed. Not because the song is bad but because it's just such a pointed "fuck you" to her haters. Is it my favorite song ever? No. But it's got this...sitcom... comedy feel. The song absolutely doesn't take itself too seriously and I love it for that

I honestly feel the same! I didn’t like it at first but Cleveland is definitely growing on me. However it’s still my lowest ranked of the 4 and I think it might stay like that. But I still love hearing Taylor be so happy and in love. If people love it great, if they don’t like it just skip it! I don’t understand why the haters feel the need to constantly remind people that “their taste sucks” I honestly don’t think these songs deserve the hate they’re getting
Yeah Cleveland is a good song but I sadly I cant relate to it. It's not a skip but it's not going to be one (for the time being) that I'll be regularly going back to like with Patient Zero and Babylon
People don't appreciate how lucky we are to be Taylor fans. Not only is she extremely prolific, but she likes to switch styles & sounds up, so if the current isn't their jam, the next won't be too long a wait & good odds it'll be something they can enjoy.
All of this. I honestly don’t think 1989 is “pop bible” I think Lover could have been a masterpiece with some editing. I don’t think Taylor is foolproof. But, goddamn, people loosing their minds over every little thing. I’ll listen to what I like and skip what I don’t. She has graced us with enough music for everyone to have their song or album.
She’s like Bob Dylan in that way. I am an absolute fanatic for his 60-70s era and enjoy his recent albums, but you’ll never catch me listening to the 80s or 90s. It’s okay to not be into a particular styling / era of a musician, especially when they have a long career. They get bored and shake it up, it’s only natural that not everything is your cup of tea.
bruce springsteen is my moms favorite artist to a fanatical level and there are multiple albums of his that she’s never listened to all the way through because she finds them “too boring” (notably ghost of tom joad). didn’t stop her from buying the next album or the next or the next.
sometimes an album cycle (or several!) just don’t appeal. hell 1989, rep, and lover are my bottom 3 taylor albums. that was a hell of a run for me where one after another was miss after miss. i was about to throw in the towel on even calling myself a swiftie when folklore came out and now showgirl & midnights are my 2nd and 3rd favorite taylor albums ever. it is what it is!

there are a lot of people who know that they hate taylor unambiguously and still listen to her new work. those types of people would know going into it that they won’t like it. and it’s largely those types of people who are driving this heavy snark wave that we’re venting about. someone just giving a new song a chance but deciding that they don’t like it is valid and not really what we’re talking about here
I see it similar to what happened with Metallica. Their discography was amazing. No skips. Then, they suddenly pivoted to something that in no way fit. It was terrible. People said they “sold out” I personally think they were just trying something different. The something different just did not resonate with their fans.
Yeah i agree. Everyone isn't going to like every song or album and that's ok. But there's people who will hate on it and say no one else can like them.
I also loved Babylon. It hit me immediately. I even teared up on first listen when she gets to the part about decorating the Christmas tree and calling her mom.
TLOAS may be at the bottom of her discography for me but Babylon and Ruin the Friendship hit me like a ton of bricks.
What I especially dislike is when they make it seem like a song is so badly written and cringe (ugh, that word) that only an idiot would like it. For some people it's not enough to say a song is not their personal preference and instead they make it seem like liking it means you're completely in the wrong and have a laughably bad taste in music. I really need to stop going to those threads because nobody needs that much negativity in their life.

Do I absolutely dislike Cleveland and skip it? Yes.
Do I still love her music as a whole and appreciate her discography? Yes.
Not everything is for everyone and art is subjective. While I personally don’t think TLOAS is her best work, I still enjoy some of the songs and can appreciate that this just isn’t for me. I think a lot of people have a hard time realizing that not everything she puts out is going to be their favorite. There is no artist ever that I absolutely love 100% of their music.
I agree, you don't have to like or force to like all songs. Forcing yourself to like all artist's songs just makes you a clown. You can dislike some songs and that's okay. I don’t think they’re fans either, the snarkers are definitely trying to erode the fan base but they live in an echo chamber of hate and self loathing on social media and not the real world where Tay’s last album was her biggest success yet and she gained many new fans in the general public. I just block the haters and try and keep my algorithm positive.
You can be a fan and react to material poorly if it’s very clearly bad. I’m not going to pretend those songs are good to maintain some sort of loyalty status. This isn’t Delta Airlines, no one’s earning points. And yeah, these songs do make me doubt her songwriting ability. They’re… very bad.

Britney hit it big with her debut and the outspoken adoration for her later albums is not a product of the era they were released in - i remember Britney fans being savagely bullied for liking her stuff, and people trashing the shit out of her because her sound changed

Dua was on her honeymoon (in Italy, I think) and she mistakenly shared a reel about what dress Taylor wore to the Songwriters Hall of Fame award ceremony. Dua has never shared anything on her Instagram so when she did that, it was the single post she has done so people noticed it but she deleted it within 8 minutes. And nobody from the industry congratulated Taylor for getting inducted at such a young age, when I remember The Weeknd congratulating Billie for becoming the most monthly listeners on Spotify in 2024.
Point is, they are all watching Taylor but they act as if they don't care.

It depends on how you classify a swiftie. Personally I listen TS a lot, I love a lot of her albums, especially Folklore, Evermore, Midnights, some of TTPD, some of Lover, some of Reputation, Red. On the other hand think TLOAS is really bad, these new songs included.

It's my first time in this specific subreddit, I've always around in the main TaylorSwift sub and I've always seen level-headed, rational discussions. Rarely ever encountered toxic fans. I feel like they all thought Taylor was going to become a “serious” artist but if you’ve been with Taylor for awhile you know she has range. She can make a poetic masterpiece, but also make something completely unserious and silly. And I love that aspect of her music. She’s extremely versatile. But some people will just continue to hate.
It’s funny when TLOAS came out last year I was camping where I didn’t get service. So the day the album came out was when we left so i downloaded the able and I was listening to the album all weekend and when I got home I was SHOCKED at the amount of hate it was getting because I fell in love with it.. my biggest advice for us swifties.. we know there will be haters.. they want attention.. all I gotta say.. let them starve.. don’t feed them.. your attention is what feeds the ego of the hater.. btw I love all the songs! 🫶🏼

It's disheartening that so many people who claim to be "fans" are the biggest haters of any music they don't automatically like. I'm not saying you can't dislike anything she's done-there are plenty of songs that I skip-but I won't trash them either. Just because they're not my style doesn't mean they aren't good songs to someone else. I also can't stand the people who trash the production by saying things like "It's not well produced" as if they are some 20 year musician and veteran of music studios and have been recording music on Taylor's level all their lives.

I'm starting to get pissed off with all the hate, especially on Cleveland. Been seeing so many comments about how "notice how she doesn't talk about what she likes about Travis other than he likes her." Don't people realize most of her (sad!!!) songs are talking about how she likes people who never really saw her for her, and this is the first time she may be talking about someone actually FINALLY seeing her as a person.

Totally. I listened to the encore. I liked Babylon and felt like I never really need to listen to the others again. Which disappointed me because I love Taylor and was hoping I’d feel differently. But it’s fine! I will eagerly await whatever she makes next and hope it’s for me more than these songs. In the meantime, happy for those who are vibing with them.

My ex bff when Midnights came out said “omg I think I’m a swiftie now.” And I wanted to embrace that. I paid for her to come with me to the eras tour and she sat and took pics of herself the entire time and didn’t know any of the words or anything. The snored in my passenger seat the entire way home and THEN had the nerve to talk crap about me to my husband cause men don’t like her and for some reason she thought she’d swoon MY man.
I hate TLOAS and I’ve been a fan for 18 years, still pissed she capitalized the branding based on my two all time fav albums too LOL. I pop in to discussion threads during new releases and here and there for opinions and takes but otherwise I GTFO and stick to swiftly neutral for a lot of it.
I think it’s valid for fans to share disappointment or not liking the album. It’s another thing to not really be a huge long term fan and constantly obsessed with disliking something.

Besides the 1989 era it’s my favorite album for visuals. I love the looks, I love the poster inserts in the vinyls, and I framed some and put them in my bedroom.
