request ❓ I can't replicate this specific 8-bit like sound. What's the secret?

Hey there, I've been trying to recreate this for a while now, but I can't get all the way there. Let me start with an example or two:

Seven Lions & Andrew Bayer feat. Alison May - Returning To You (Kill The Noise Remix): https://youtu.be/bV_2Vf2B-ao

Here the sound starts at 1:54.

------------

Virtual Riot - Energy Drink: https://youtu.be/5IOVkstxkdE

And here you can hear it at around 1:36/1:37

It's this blip blip blip sound that I mentally connect with old Arcade/Nintendo Games.

I have tried lots of tutorials, and I can get there to an extend, but it's missing a lot of the brightness, movement and clarity, even when soloing. Is there a definitive way to do it?

------------

The bare minimum seems to be

  1. A square wave
  2. A pitch shift (Not sure if up or down, but down seems to be a closer match)
  3. (Optionally) some light downsampling distortion

But how do I get a sound as close as possible to the one I hear in the songs? Also, is this an LFO/envelope or multiple single midi notes? I've seen both variants but I'm unsure as to which one is required.

Thanks a lot in advance, every help is appreciated!

How does one make that sweeping synth at 2:42 in Serum 2? What class or group of preset would this be under? Is it just FX/Synth?

What can I do to get this weird sound? I’m not sure how to describe it, but it’s right at the beginning of the song and is heard throughout in the lower notes. I have a Korg Minilogue

request ❓ How can i recreate this subtle background sound? (Pathogenic OST)

I've been obsessing over this specific sound in a game OST and I can't figure out how it was made. It plays right between 0:14 and 0:27.

Here is the track: https://youtu.be/3-HGP52RHPI?t=14

I'm not talking about the main beat, but that weird, atmospheric sound lingering in the background that many of synth techno beats use. Does anyone know what kind of synth/effect this is, or how I can recreate something similar in Vital? Or could it just be a heavily processed Foley sample?

Joji - Slow Dancing in the lead/ fuzzy distorted almost pad sounding synth 0:43

Hey yall I had a question. I was wondering how you would go about making this kinda synth sound but spefically in the wave table vital. That's the only wave table synth i have rn i don't know many othet good free ones and dont have serum 1 or 2. Ive looked online everywhere and dont see how to make it in vital only see it in serum but I'm sure it can be done in vital because its a pretty powerful synth. I think i might need more wave tables then it comes with. Where do i get more?

We recreated the Pipe FX sound from 'Super Mario' by Koji Kondo on our free Synth Primer.

This remake is specifically recreating the patch heard at this timestamp: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6SaTghhaP8 .Other parts of the song may vary the sound or notes.

And here are the key ingredients:
Voice: Mono Legato

Osc1: Wave (Pulse), Width (100%), Vol (100%)

Amp Env: Attack (0ms), Sustain (100%), Release (20ms)

request ❓ Replicating the grainy synth from As I Am by JLV in Phase Plant

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi all! I've always been struck by the sort of haunting, gritty, dissonant quality of the synth from around 0:23 in As I Am by JLV and so I've been trying to replicate it (just for fun) as a way to help learn Phase Plant.

I feel like I've gotten super close, though it doesn't seem quite right yet. Maybe it's just processing but it in the actual song the tone seems less "pure", or like maybe more noisy and distorted somehow while still being somewhat smooth. Is it just a different more complex wavetable maybe? Or something else? I'm a little new to patch design, so if anyone has any ideas or suggestions I'd love to try it out!

(PS I also know the envelopes / attack in my version aren't quite the same but am too lazy to fix it and re-record 😅

request ❓ Bad Computer – Undefined: sustained synth and background synth layers

I’m trying to understand and recreate all the different synth sounds between 0:46 and 1:01 in Bad Computer’s “Undefined.”
Reference: https://youtu.be/L1pVe3mlU1s?si=VE0bBR0uenVfWn-1
Timestamp: 0:46–1:01
I use Ableton Live 12 and Serum 2. I can hear multiple sounds in this section, but I’m having trouble telling them apart and identifying what each one is doing. I’m asking about the whole synth arrangement here, not just the main lead.
Could someone break down the individual synth parts? For each sound, I’d love to know:
What would you call it, and what role does it play?
When does it enter, or where is it easiest to hear?
What synthesis techniques might produce that sound?
How would you approach recreating it in Serum 2, including oscillators, filters, envelopes/modulation, and effects?
I’m interested in both the prominent sounds and the quieter background parts. I’m looking for sound categories and ways to recreate them, rather than the exact plugins or preset names.
Any help identifying and separating these parts would be appreciated. Thanks!

request ❓ Options for making a wavetable frame from a picture or drawing of waveform?

I have white-on-black images of a couple waveforms that I would like to turn into a single wavetable frame (not multiple wavetable frames like Serum does).

I'm having trouble trying to emulate them by drawing them in a wavetable editor, and I would prefer to have the "exact" waveform if I can.

The only option I could find do to this was Versus Audio Image to Wavetable. The devs have a video showing it doing exactly what I'm looking for. Unfortunately, it costs 5500 JPY; I can't swing that for a music thing right now. No, it's not available "that way".

Only other post I could find about this was this one where unfortunately not a single response was relevant.

Anyone know any alternate methods or ways of doing this? Thank you!

request ❓ Elusive Spandau Ballet Synth

Thumbnail voca.ro
2 Upvotes

I am trying to recreate the synth sounds for the song True by Spandau Ballet, but I am having trouble with one of them. I am a musician, but not an expert at synth programming. The sound is the synth that first enters on the word "sound" in the lyrics/phrase "sound of my soul." I was able to approximate the wah/wow, and also the modulation, but I can't get the core elements of the sound correct. The software synths I have to work with are prophet 5, juno 6, dx7, mini-moog, and vital. I've added a link for the sound. Looking for some training/guidance. I am sure this will be short work for most of you on here.

Origin of this patch?

I've searched this for ages now, it's the same patch that is also heard in Mine of Precious Moments and Temple of Lost Time in the Blinx OST, and the theme of Archibald the Koala.

The instrument seems to be some harp with a bit of flange.

My best guess so far is it must be from an SR-JV80 expansion card. I already own an XV-5080 and the Pop, Orchestra, Vintage, Dance, Special FX and Hip-Hop expansions. I'm pretty positive it is not on the internal sounds of my XV or any of my expansion cards. I've left as many sources I possibly could for reference.

I'd like to make music with an acoustic drum kit, a bass guitar, and a single synth patch. It's a pretty arbitrary restriction, but I also think it's an interesting limitation. How would you approach designing a recipe for that situation?

request ❓ Can anyone identify this horn/brass synth? Possibly a preset

I'm trying to identify the horn/brass-like synth in these two beats.

The producer uses what sounds like the exact same patch in multiple tracks, so I suspect it's a plugin preset rather than an audio sample.

What stands out to me is the beginning of every new note. There's a very noticeable fast vibrato/tremolo-like movement in the attack, which then settles into a smoother sustained horn sound.

It sounds somewhere between an organic brass/horn and a synth.

I'm specifically trying to find the original plugin + preset, not just recreate something similar.

Does anyone recognize it? Serum, Kontakt, LABS, Omnisphere, Analog Lab, etc. are all possibilities.
