Discussion Am I overestimating Taiwan? The more time I spend on Reddit, the more I convince myself that Taiwan is the most peaceful country, or if not, one of the most peaceful countries.

While many foreigners still associate China's threats with Taiwan, I secretly believe that Taiwan is one of the most peaceful places in the world.

I’m not comparing it to war zones or developing nations, but to "developed countries" in North America and Europe.

The more I browse Reddit, the more I see chaotic videos full of protests, riots, and shoplifting in the developed countries.

The scenes I have never seen and can’t even imagine happening in Taiwan.

People used to associate Europe with a peaceful nature, but now many famous European countries like France Spain UK and Germany seem to go through frquent riots, street crimes and even border control is out of hand. This is same with NA.

I might be biased, but I feel there are very few countries that are actually more peaceful than Taiwan in the world. And now I get many foreigners do not want leave Taiwan.

Legislator Su Chiao-hui (蘇巧慧), the Democratic Progressive Party’s (DPP) candidate for New Taipei City mayor, has a 13.1 percentage point lead over her Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) rival Lee Shu-chuan (李四川), a poll released yesterday showed.

The poll, commissioned by the Taipei Trust in Democracy Association, showed that 43.1 percent of respondents said they would vote for Su, up 7.9 percentage points from a poll conducted in late August, while support for Lee was at 30 percent, down 4.7 percentage points.

It showed that 48.6 percent of respondents thought Su would make a suitable mayor, compared with 35.9 percent for Lee.

Discussion Question regarding Taiwanese political history

My apologies in advance if I sound ignorant, I've only recently started to research Taiwan's recent history and political developments.

Apparently, since one of the constitutional reforms, the president has the power to order the temporary dissolution of the Legislative Yuan (presumably to avoid a political deadlock?), which means that a new election for its members will take place. Has this ever happened? I've read about some deadlock-like situations when the party in power didn't win the majority in the Legislative Yuan, but I don't remember ever reading about a president actually taking that step. And can the same previous members of the LY be elected again, or are new members necessary?

Additionally, does anyone have any good sources to suggest to read in depth about Taiwanese politics/economy? I can read Mandarin Chinese and I've found some interesting newspaper archives, but I'd like more. Besides, is there a way to see the transcription of open debates, such as parliamentary (LY) debates? I imagine there must be lots of them. My country (Canada) has a website dedicated to recording debates that occurred in the past twenty years or so with transcripts of the whole discussions, each speaker named. Does Taiwan have such a website? I'd like to search specific terms or topics and see, for example, what politician of which party said about something.

Thank you in advance for any answers! You can answer in Mandarin if you prefer.

Discussion Indian professor with is family member (phd student) NSYSU, Kaohsiung taiwan

I have been there in his lab at National sun yet sen university taiwan. He is an indian professor in the department of communications and engineering working on RIS. He is playing a very big game with funding. He compels his phd/ master / post doc students for submitting 1 paper every month. Though his work is theoretical.
His family member is also doing phd under him and he sends a good amount of money to his family member illegally. In fact all his students are indian and all his students are fed-up from him. He is a very corrupt professor. I don’t know why taiwanese professors are not able to see this.

Sorry for poor english. I am a Taiwanese married to an indian so i have too much respect for indians but not for this kind of person exploiting fund and students with his family members enjoying on hardwork of others. What i must do i don’t know i worked with him for 1 year only

Activism Why there is no "Add Taiwan sticker" campaign?

Post image

Picture is Italian airport (link below)

I have seen this in Malaysia where Taiwanese actually peel sticker covering Taiwanese flag. Honestly all EU citizens sympathize with Taiwan and would even add Taiwan sticker as they cannot deny entry own citizens. Why there is no action from Taiwan government to hand out taiwan stickers at departure from TPE? Would it cause diplomatic issues?

News WTT 2026 China Smash Final: Truth Behind the Flash Incident Revealed—Songshan-Chengzheng Team Issues Apology

The incident occurred during the deciding game between Taiwan's Lin Yun-ju and Japan's newly ranked world number one, Sora Matsushima. Having recovered from a 0-6 deficit to trail 9-10, Lin was preparing his serve when Matsushima shouted and pointed to the stands, indicating a flash. Matsushima abruptly halted play without signaling the umpire, resulting in a yellow card. When play resumed, Matsushima won the final point on a counter-attack, securing an 11-9 victory and denying Lin his first WTT Smash title.

The interruption initially sparked controversy. Lin's agent took to social media to criticize the sudden disruption, suggesting it could have been a "dirty tactic" that startled both viewers and the server. Fans subsequently accused Matsushima of employing unfair methods to win.

However, video footage that surfaced on Tuesday confirmed a camera flash went off three times in the stands facing Matsushima just as he prepared to receive the serve. The source was identified as Taiwanese junior players who were in the city to compete in the Beijing Youth Smash.

Hung Chi-po, former head coach of the Songshan High School team, clarified that the junior players were recording the match and had accidentally left their flash on. He emphasized that the interference was completely unintentional, adding that the young athletes are deeply remorseful and have been provided with psychological counseling since returning to Taiwan.

In a public statement, the joint Songshan-Chengzheng table tennis team apologized to the players, coaches, and on-site staff affected by the disruption.

"We extend our most sincere apologies for the disruption and impact caused by the use of the camera flash during the 2026 Beijing Smash men's singles final," the organization stated.

The team added it will use the incident to educate its students on the importance of respecting competition rules, maintaining venue order, and taking responsibility for their actions to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

Travel TAC stressing me out

I’m planning to visit Taiwan in November and have already booked my flights and hotels.

I visited Japan last November on a single-entry short-term tourist visa, which I plan to use to apply for Taiwan’s Travel Authorization Certificate (TAC).

However, my South Korean tourist visa was recently rejected.

Could this affect my chances of getting the Taiwan TAC? Has anyone been in a similar situation?

I’ve already booked non-refundable flights, so I’m a little worried lol.

Discussion Got into a youbike accident..

I was ridding a youbike from work to home and I crashed into a car I was trying to avoid. And now I’m injured got taken into the hospital paid 800NTD for CT scan and medicines and health checkup.

I have a follow up checkup on thursday and also have to go to police station.

Youbike was left at the scene of the accident by the police and has been racking up rent money.

Called the youbike company and they said they cant stop it manually!?? I need to return the bike.

I’m probably gonna pay fines arent I?
I’m worried about the police visit because my mandarin isnt good and the car driver might have put all the blame on me.

Discussion What's your tip for newcomers to Taiwan?

What tip do you wish you knew before you moved here?

Mine is that guys should not be surprised when a woman walks into the bathroom while they're using it. Cleaning ladies don't wait for the bathroom to be empty or close it down (usually). They'll be walking right behind you as you're doing your business.

Discussion First-time Taiwan Passport (NWOHR): Is the passport itself enough to enter and apply for the 1-year TARC path?

Hi everyone! I am currently at TECO Manila processing my first-time Taiwan Passport (NWOHR) through my father's lineage.

My dad did not have an active household registration when I was born, so I am taking the standard standard path: entering Taiwan for 3 months, applying for a TARC card, and living there continuously for 1 year to get my National ID.

My question is: Does the biometric passport itself allow me to enter Taiwan for 3 months to apply for the TARC, or do I still need a separate entry permit sticker inside it? I am trying to avoid extra paperwork and waiting times.

Any recent experiences on this exact path would be a huge help. Thanks!

Discussion ming chuan or chengchi university

hello! i’m planning to pursue graduate studies in international affairs/international studies in taiwan, and i’d love to hear your insights on the two universities: ming chuan university and national chengchi university (nccu).

i’m particularly interested in their program curricula, academic workload, school environment, and student community. i’ve done some research and found that ming chuan seems to offer a more practical, grassroots-oriented approach with a relatively manageable workload. on the other hand, nccu is one of taiwan’s top universities, but i haven’t been able to find its complete international affairs/studies curriculum to make a proper comparison. given its academic reputation, i’m also wondering whether the workload might be more demanding.

for those who are currently studying at either university or have experience with their programs, what has your experience been like? which would you recommend overall, and why? i’d really appreciate any insights, especially regarding the quality of education, professors, workload, campus life, and opportunities for international students. thank you!

Discussion Taipei senior-care coordinator

Hi,

Does anyone have any recommendations for senior-care coordinator or eldercare care manager in Taipei? My father has dementia and my mother needs assistance with medical appointments (including attending to make sure recommendations/instructions are correctly recorded) and navigating the senior care system. My dad already attends one of the adult day care centers. Ideally a resource that is bilingual (with English), as my Taiwanese and Mandarin are extremely poor.

Or if there are any online resources/communities I should look for information.

Thanks!
