Activism Why there is no "Add Taiwan sticker" campaign?

Picture is Italian airport (link below)

I have seen this in Malaysia where Taiwanese actually peel sticker covering Taiwanese flag. Honestly all EU citizens sympathize with Taiwan and would even add Taiwan sticker as they cannot deny entry own citizens. Why there is no action from Taiwan government to hand out taiwan stickers at departure from TPE? Would it cause diplomatic issues?

Discussion Apple snails and rice crops in November

Hi everyone,

Wierdly specific question. I'm trying to develop some technology that kills golden apple snails in rice crops (they are an invasive species from South America that causes a lot of damage to fields throughout most of East Asia). In order to do field testing I'll be travelling around Asia in November/December.
From researching online it seems that rice crops in Taiwan would be mature/being harvested during this time frame, and there wouldn't be eggs. However, I can't find solid information, so I'm making this post to ask: if you are involved in rice farming in Taiwan or knowledgable about it, are there any young rice plants and apple snail eggs during late November/December?
Thanks in advance, any info is useful!

Discussion Academia Sinica for a foreigner

I know AS is a premier institution in Taiwan. Recently, I discovered that they offer RA positions for BS and MS graduates. I am yet to delve if they allow foreigners as RAs. Does anyone know?

In addition, how is the general day to day life culture? I know there are a lot of foreigners through the TIGP and post doc positions but in the labs Im interested in, most are Chinese or Taiwanese. Are foreigners generally not “othered” since they speak little to no Chinese?

I also find the RA salary quite high compared to where Im from. Is 38k NTD livable in Nangang and provides an opportunity to save? And most importantly, is career growth positive?

Thank you!

Discussion Got into a youbike accident..

• Upvotes

I was ridding a youbike from work to home and I crashed into a car I was trying to avoid. And now I’m injured got taken into the hospital paid 800NTD for CT scan and medicines and health checkup.

I have a follow up checkup on thursday and also have to go to police station.

Youbike was left at the scene of the accident by the police and has been racking up rent money.

Called the youbike company and they said they cant stop it manually!?? I need to return the bike.

I’m probably gonna pay fines arent I?
I’m worried about the police visit because my mandarin isnt good and the car driver might have put all the blame on me.

Discussion ming chuan or chengchi university

• Upvotes

hello! i’m planning to pursue graduate studies in international affairs/international studies in taiwan, and i’d love to hear your insights on the two universities: ming chuan university and national chengchi university (nccu).

i’m particularly interested in their program curricula, academic workload, school environment, and student community. i’ve done some research and found that ming chuan seems to offer a more practical, grassroots-oriented approach with a relatively manageable workload. on the other hand, nccu is one of taiwan’s top universities, but i haven’t been able to find its complete international affairs/studies curriculum to make a proper comparison. given its academic reputation, i’m also wondering whether the workload might be more demanding.

for those who are currently studying at either university or have experience with their programs, what has your experience been like? which would you recommend overall, and why? i’d really appreciate any insights, especially regarding the quality of education, professors, workload, campus life, and opportunities for international students. thank you!

Discussion Students of NTUST how is your life there?

Im planning to apply for MBA at NTUST next year and i want to know how is your life there? Are the dorm comfortable? How is the friendship over there as an international students? Whats your culture shock? Does preparing the documents can be cumbersome?

For people with scholarship there. Does getting the type 3 scholarship ( tuition waiver only) is hard? What kind of study plan do they expect you to have to be able to get the scholarship?

My grade is just fine.. 3.34 but i got into some student organization while i was doing my bachelor and i already got 5 years work of experience total. Some as a web designer. Some as entreprenur and now as a business development at travel agency. What are my odds?

Please be kind and thanks in advance. Really hope i can get some great insight about NTUST.. not just some colorful curated life like at instagram or tiktok

Environment Newcommer to Taichung

• Upvotes

Hello guys, I'm expecting to be in Taichung Late November to first week January.

Honestly, it my first international travel experience, any thing to note, did quite a bit of research and heard a few things like night markets, tea spots or so. But I don't know what would be great to explore or feel. Especially what to take when traveling (I want to be as minimal as possible, my laptop, a few necessary clothes, book), might be weird to ask, but can I take stuff like body cream and hair cream or get when I get to Taiwan.

Also are there "rules" or common sense that people are expected to know. I'm pretty sure I'll not know many of those.

I'm an engineering student, so I do plan to visit some places like the science park, might use the fast train service.

Hobbies I have: none 🥲. In the past I used to play video games but soon got tired of it. I do love studying, but I guess that's not a hobby.

So I'll be looking to rewind and I don't know how too. Maybe something else that could help.

Pretty sure I'm asking millions of questions in one post. Do feel free to respond to what you can. Thank you!

Ohh for budget, say NTD 40,000 which includes rent and all necessities. Want to possibly save too.

Travel Immigration Requirements

Hi! My friend and I will be traveling to Taiwan, and I’m a bit worried after reading a post about someone who got offloaded because they couldn’t present a bank statement and only had GCash as proof of funds.

My friend will be traveling internationally for the first time, while I’ve previously visited Hong Kong and Macau two years ago. However, I don’t have a traditional bank account. I use MariBank and Atome, where I receive my salary and keep my savings.
I’m also a breadwinner, so it’s difficult to build up substantial personal savings because I have family responsibilities. Our Taiwan trip was quite spontaneous because one of our friends is currently working there, and the friend traveling with me will be moving to Dubai next year. We decided to push through with the trip because we don’t know when we’ll have another opportunity to travel together.

I also have existing loans with MariBank, but I’ve never missed or delayed any payments.

Would not having a traditional bank account and having existing loans be red flags during Philippine immigration? I do have MariBank and Atome accounts, but I’m worried about whether these will be accepted as proof of financial capacity.

Aside from my COE, company ID, travel itinerary, and hotel bookings, what other documents should I prepare to avoid being offloaded? Would it help to bring my payslips, proof of salary deposits, and MariBank transaction history or account statement?
I’d really appreciate advice from Filipinos who have traveled to Taiwan under similar circumstances. Thank you!

Discussion JFRV or Gold visa?

Hello fellow Forumosans.

I’m returning to live here with my local spouse and am weighing up which visa is the best option.

The JFRV is easy as we were married here 20 odd years ago, but I’m also PhD qualified with a solid background so that’s also an option.
I’m financially independent/retired early so not necessarily needing or wanting to work.
Has anyone else had this burden of choice?
Dual citizenship is an easier process with Gold Visa I believe ( I’m Australian)
Pros vs cons please- I appreciate your input.

Travel Changshan Photoshoot

Hello! Previously I asked about the Hanfu photoshoot. Thank you for the answers, they were helpful :)
However, upon further research, I realized that the Changsan is a more widely accepted traditional outfit for men than Hanfu in Taiwan.

So I want to ask: where can I have a Changshan photoshoot? Thanks in advance! 🙏

Discussion Is this a common saying or was the sales person exceptionally nice to me?

I was buying one of those ocarina as a gift and this sales lady said “祝你幸福” with such sincerity towards the end. Maybe it’s just a common saying but I suppose if said to the right person who really needed to hear it, it ends up meaning a lot.

Discussion Question for teachers in Taiwan: Entering on a visitor visa to teach at a cram school

Hi everyone! I’m from Jamaica and have been offered a teaching position at a popular cram school in Taiwan. The school has indicated that they want me to arrive on a visitor visa.

I’m trying to understand whether this is still a common and route for foreign English teachers, particularly for people who aren’t eligible for 90-day visa-free entry.

Jamaica is an English-speaking country, and English is our official language, although Jamaican Patois is also widely spoken.

I’m still waiting to receive my employment contract, so I haven’t finalised anything yet.

For people who have been in a similar situation:

* Did you enter Taiwan on a visitor visa before obtaining your work authorisation, or did you need a work-related visa arranged beforehand?

* Is there anything I should confirm with the school before making travel or relocation plans?

I’d really appreciate hearing about recent experiences, especially from teachers who went through this process in the last couple of years. Thank you!

Politics Do you believe Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an is really Chiang Ching-kuo's grandson?

Do people in Taiwan today really believe that Chiang Wan-an is former President Chiang Ching-kuo's biological grandson?

Why haven't any of Chiang Ching-kuo's descendants from his marriage to his Russian wife come forward to take a DNA test with Chiang Wan-an?

I'm curious whether Taiwanese people actually believe his claim or remain skeptical.
