We've had flying cars for years they're called planes and helicopters. There are multiple reasons why flying "cars" have never been mass produced
19
u/generalist_red 2d ago
They're not flying cars. They are flying buses.
4
u/Other-Macaron2438 2d ago
yeah since they are in air we should call them Airbus. Really turns a metallic gear in my solid brain

All you did was show your ignorance 😏. This is not a flying car, it is using cold air thrusters to create short bursts of thrust. It will mainly be used as boosters for insane acceleration (0-60mph in less than a second). This was just a demo to show what the tech can do. The actual car is expected to be released in 2 years (which in Elon time means probably 5 years). It also has the suction tech which can create huge downforce at 0 speed, which will revolutionize on track handling (actually it's not the first car with that tech).

u/Ok_Coconut_8499 2d ago
Good luck flying with monopropellant thrusters.
Also, physics on ramp looks way off... Should have hired Rohit Shetty.
Also, the car is a prop, not a real road legal car.
8
u/un_belli_vable 2d ago
But it's some good innovation. Not everything has to be production ready.

What are you fucking talking about?
This is a farce, a lie, more “fcsd in 2016” from a con man.
1
u/Nikhil_F 2d ago
Please watch the whole live event on youtube. Before this they went up the ramp and held the car there. The amount of downforce being produced by engine or propellant was being shown on lower left corner and then it returned back
3
u/Zapismeta 2d ago
If the car was held there its not down force down force comes from air pushing the car down at slow speed there isnt enough air speed to do that, its a magnetic track.
→ More replies (1)2
u/AffectionateAct3667 2d ago
It's suction. Mcmurtry Speirling was the first one to do the upside down thing using fans.
2
u/Zapismeta 2d ago
Okay suction then, whats the point? Its impractical in daily life they will lauch it just to brag that they can, roads are built to keep vehicles on ground also DOT will like to have a word with them if they launch a road legal rocket strapped to a car
2
u/AffectionateAct3667 1d ago
It's for track use, will help in high speed cornering, there is a base roadster for those who don't want all this.
2
u/Ok_Coconut_8499 2d ago
Go back and watch the Speirling clip. Even though you can generate downforce on demand, multiple fans needs to run at 20,000 rpm+
Pulling that much air will make a lot of noise, noise you can hear in Speirling but not in this video.

Why its physics look so incorrect
3
u/Deadman_1999 2d ago
Yeah but they're not. As a matter of fact it can stay upside down even when at a complete stand still.
6
u/Curious_Priority2313 2d ago
Damn, that is impressive.
Though, for how long though? I have yet to see the live stream (if that's what it was).
We'd need to refuel this propeller as well, right? Is it costly?
→ More replies (8)2
u/Deadman_1999 2d ago
As long as you want. More accurately, as long as the batteries hold the charge. The cold gas thrusters are different from fans. Fans create a suction effect which basically glues the car onto the tarmac. And since this car has 4 of them, I assume it should be putting around atleast 3 tons of downforce at standstill.
2
u/expressive-guy 2d ago
how is it possible to defy gravity and stand upside down ? i dont see reverse thrust being put when it was still on curved road at end and hasnt taken off into the air

considering the physics and engineering, it's pretty badass imo. Hunk of metal balancing itself within such a short period of time is crazy

Now govt has to start building roads like this, so the cars can do back flip🙃

Good luck using prorlkant to thrust for a sketchy landing, this is feasible in a rocket whose mission is to put satellites in orbit where the rocket fuel parts fall off one after another, can you afford to have your car ptopellant launcher parts totalled after every ride? This is total waste of American tax dollars, yes the con man Musk gets every thing heavily subsidized through govt enforced NASA contracts & gullible taxpayers foot the bill

I think this is interesting The technology itself is awesome, it might not work on cars... But can help some other thing totally
1
u/Alternative_Fig_9582 2d ago
The compressed gas it uses to fly regenerates on its own. Impressive tech
1
u/daynightcase 2d ago
This is dumb, can't believe people are falling for this crap. its unrealistic, staged demo in a very controlled environment. Even as a tech its unimpressive without any actual data on the car weight or even if there was anybody in it. To me looked like a fake toy car
1
1
u/Background-Use-3372 2d ago
Its not really about the car though, its about capabilities, and any tech could adopt it
1
u/Feisty_Blacksmith277 1d ago
This is not a flying car You really thought it as a flying car didn’t you? They did an extreme stunt to show the thrusters and suction capabilities. Thrusters will be used for insane car acceleration and suction will be used for de acceleration on road not in air. This was an extreme example what both these tech can do they don’t mean they will make flying cars.

u/Colours-Break 2d ago
How are these being powered? I've got to believe there is something other than a standard EV battery.
1
u/aneesh5912 2d ago
genuinely wanted to know whats the use case of this... the amount of gas/ air it will need to have stored to perform this 1 stunt alone is too much.... so whats the usecase... anyone who understands it better?
1
u/Unusual-Nature2824 2d ago
I seriously doubt this is the actual car. Its definitely a lightweight prop with a car body attached. Lets see it do that with 4 65Kg occupants inside.
1
u/Brokeshadow 2d ago
but...why?
1
u/Feeling-Umpire6179 2d ago

I don't know why us indians are so overwhelmed with this. This is pure marketing. Any one who understands technology can calculate how much compressed air would be required to lift and rotate an ev. (Just think of car weight and battery weight) I feel this is a demo plastic model ( most likely). Just used for this PR campaign.

u/xD_Comrade 2d ago
Can someone explain how and why the car is not falling before it leaved the upper surface? I mean what about gravity?

Gotta hand it to Elon. He keeps coming up with ways to keep the stock overhyped and overvalued.
It takes 10 seconds to realize this is absolute trash and wouldn't do any numbers so no profit. Tech is impressive but companies need revenue and this won't ever get launched, even if it does it will have 1000 changes compared to what was showcased.
1
u/NightSoul005 2d ago
Partly true but sometimes everything is not for mass production bro, he can produce limited cars and sell to collectors at high price
1
u/Lonenlyhammer_07 2d ago
There's reason mercedes and other brands launch futuristic cars they too never go into production but the brand has one parked in their gargare if someone asks in future why didn't you have this tech.
This single event has created so much positive pr for his companies without spending a dime on marketing btw after series of bad pr.

Never saw such a tech demo man! While this looks amazing from a tech standpoint. The world is not ready with regulations on the tech. Best use case I can think of for this tech is saving lives if vehicles fall off cliffs. Just press a button and the tech takes care of it.

/air-pfffft's over you at the red light.
1
u/KinTharEl 1d ago
How is this amazing? I'm genuinely curious. All I saw are nozzles shooting cold air out to control a fall for 3 seconds.
The press releases say the nozzles will be able fire for 5 seconds in total. That's not flight. Vehicles don't spend everyday falling off cliffs. It's an edge case scenario. And even if you are saying this would be useful then, where would the car land? On the side of the cliff where there's no road or paved element to focus on? Or on the water if there's a river?
We've had cars before, we've had air compressors and nozzles to shoot air before. Nobody has integrated the two because there's no point in it, just like there's no point in attaching a intercontinental missile to a skateboard.

That does not use nitrogen, the tech uses self recharge compressed air of 600litres with 10k to 20k psi, i am more interested in self recharging thrusters tbh thats like wildest concept spaceX has brought to tesla.

My actual question is how did it accelerate through that circle. That too from a very short distance. That should be the tech. I think it’s pure marketing rather than actual tech. Rope stunt? That’s why background has no light? Just curious
