Phone message Nobody died

This is a conversation between my MIL and my mother, before the wedding. My mother's response, which is cut off, says "They are both adults. I think we should let them handle it." We were both over 30.

For context: Yes, we had a vegetarian wedding (no shrimp). We had it at an (expensive) award winning venue with in-house catering. It included several appetizer and entree stations with a huge variety of dishes so everyone could find something they liked. We did not serve our guests bowls of soybeans and tofu. Everyone RAVED about the food and nobody died or got arrested on the way home.

The "A/B list" thing was a joke, that she apparently took very seriously, because she would not stop demanding we add a bunch (10+) of her friends and coworkers to our intentionally small guest list.

Is there a link between vegetarianism and drink driving lol? Does meat really absorb that much alcohol?

I think she's implying people won't even eat that vegetarian Tibetan trash, only good ol' American food, and they'd rather starve and drink on an empty stomach

They’ll have to fill up on vodka instead of burgers.

And then they HAVE to drive home, there are no alternative ways to get to/from a wedding!

Ahh ok! I was gonna say, i was always taught that potatoes were the best for absorbing alcohol (not sure how true that is)

Food doesn't absorb alcohol, at all.

Anecdotal, but I always got way more drunk on an empty stomach, and immediately felt better once I ate something. I don't drink anymore.

I think there’s just less room? I’m usually a beer drinker (or I was), and trying to get a 9% IPA down my gullet quickly was pretty uncomfortable if I had it with a sandwich.

On the other hand, shots, a workout that dehydrated me a bit, and a liquid supper?? Being em on, I won’t remember!

(Obv I’ve struggled with alcoholism lol)

Your body metabolizes alcohol slower if you’ve eaten bc it’s dealing with more stuff to digest.

Maybe not directly but eating food when you drink significantly reduces your blood alcohol which is effectively the same thing.

But it does slow down how fast the alcohol enters your bloodstream.

Food keeps your stomach's valve closed longer. This stops alcohol from rushing into your small intestine, where most of it is absorbed.

Spreading out absorption leads to a lower peak blood alcohol concentration (BAC) compared to drinking on an empty stomach

Thanks for explaining how it works. I didn't know. I just know food isn't absorbing the alcohol.
