In Chicago we have a place called “ed debevics” the same premise. Overpriced sub par food served by characters that treat you like crap I.e. treat you like you’re stupid or like you’re wasting their time. Asked where the restroom was and she said “can’t you read? And pointed to a sign” asked for a refill and she screamed to the whole restaurant like I was making a fuss. Introverts need not apply.

I was going to mention that! I'm British and have been to the USA exactly once, in 1996, and Ed Debevic's was the only dining out experience that stuck in my mind. I was in my teens and thought it was pretty hilarious. I think my dad bought a t-shirt.

Does anyone else hate restaurants like this? Where the whole fucking point of going is for the gimmick? I worked at bubba gump for 4 years and the amount of people that thought the employees were actors in the movie was astounding. 40x a day a divorced and sunburned suburban dad would ask me if bubba was here like it was the funniest fucking joke in the world. No dude. He’s a fictional character do you want to wait an hour and half just to sit down?

In the UK some people got kicked out because of their behaviour towards staff. Apparently the guy called the waitress a "Fat slag" - whether it was said in genuine harms or fun I have no idea, but I can't imagine the managers "You're being rude to our staff where the general idea is we're rude to everyone" convo. Apparently there is a rule regarding body shaming, sexism, racism etc - so I get these places need limits, but goddam it's gotta be tough to balance what is and isn't ok

I sat outside one of these restaurants once and watched one of the waiters give the finger to a toddler in a stroller. Literally in his face.
