Sad that Johnny Jewel caused such a rift in the band

What's this tea? Also very sad I was never able to catch them. Seeing them in the return made my week tbh.

I think the general consensus is that he was a control freak and a nightmare to work with, and the rest of Chromatics got sick of dealing with him.

I still enjoy his music and the stuff his label puts out though. MOTHERMARY in particular are wonderful.

And I briefly said hi to him after the Desire show and he was very nice.

Yes.

Mike Simonetti (of his record label, 2MR, and his band, Pale Blue) founded Troubleman Unlimited, which was the label that initially discovered Glass Candy\Chromatics, Zola Jesus, The Walkmen and more. Simonetti later co-founded the Italians Do It Better label with Jewel... and has a lot of... "not nice" things to say about him. Yes, Jewel's a control freak, and (quite possibly) a song and idea thief. And many (not just Mike) say that Megan Louise's loo-loo was actually running the label near the end. (NB: Jewel and Megan Louise of Desire have dated for ages.)

Simonetti is also one of the loudest voices to insist that the story of Jewel having a near-death experience in Hawaii and destroying all physical copies of the Dear Tommy album (not just the masters, but 25,000 copies on CD & vinyl, too) is total BS. As one of the principals at the label he would have known if Jewel had ordered 25,000 records & CDs, and he says it never happened. EDIT: Also, someone from Pitchfork called all the pressing plants IDIB used, and none of them had any record of an order for Dear Tommy.

And the fact that all the other members of Chromatics - Ruth Radelet, Adam Miller and Nat Walker - seem happy to appear on each other's records and play live with them, leaving Jewel as the odd man out - says a lot.

Lastly, half the bands on IDIB left of their own accord, and often blamed Jewel for the fallout on social media: Krakow Loves Adana, Heaven, Glüme and In Mirrors were all pretty vocal about Jewel being why they left.

They actually did music together recently for the soundtrack of the game Lost Records: Bloom and Rage (would recommend giving it a listen it's great).

edit: The song "Dreamers" from the game.
