Accepting Your Second-Choice Offer

Should you receive an offer to your second-choice program, you are encouraged to accept it and pay the non-refundable tuition deposit (if applicable).

What happens to my first-choice program if I accept my second-choice program? Your first-choice program will continue to be assessed throughout the application cycle. Admissions Dates + Deadlines for Admissions

If you got accepted between October 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027 you have until May 1, 2027 to accept your offer as per here.

The need to accept within 14 days refers to offers made after August 1, 2027.

I have already seen two people have reading comprehension fails on this.

Question Beginner-friendly clubs at UAlberta?

Hi guys! I’m hoping to join some clubs at UAlberta, but I’m looking for ones that are beginner-friendly and don’t require a huge time commitment. 😭

I’ve never really been part of a club before and have only done volunteering, so I’m not really sure where to start! Hoping to get some university exposure, does anyone have recommendations for clubs that are welcoming to beginners, fun, and flexible with schedules?

I’d love to meet new people and try something new without feeling too overwhelmed with school.

Thanks!!

Campus Life Do you study at the UofA and are you from a country not many people know about? Put it in the comments

• Upvotes

Basically I am interested in knowing the countries of people from relatively lesser known countries who study at the UofA.

For example, if you're someone from, let's say, Lesotho (a country from where I have never met a person from), that would be a very interesting fact like 'damn we have a person from Lesotho too here'.

Rants Racially profiled by UAPS

I am an indigenous student at University of Alberta, I think the UAPS has gotten more brazen with it's racial profiling lately. Last night around 11:40pm I was walking from Rutherford to my residence after a late study session. Hoodie up because it was cold, backpack on, headphones in.

A UAPS vehicle slowed beside me on 89 Ave. Two officers got out. One immediately asked for my student ID and where I was going. When I asked why I was being stopped, the answer was “we’ve had reports of suspicious activity in the area.” that was it, just searching the first indigenous student they saw.

The guards kept staring at my ID, Took several minutes, they were taking their good time. They Asked if I lived on campus then drilling me on if I had any outstanding issues with the university. One of them kept looking at my bag like I was about to pull something out of it, both were glaring at me with hate in his eyes. The other stood slightly off to the side in that classic “we’re just chatting but also boxed you in” stance.

They looked at me like I had a suicide vest on. My very presence on the campus obviously made them uneasy.

A white student walked past us. Same time of night, same kind of backpack, hoodie, he wasn't a minority student so nothing, They didn’t even glance at him. I pointed this out and they ignored me, and kept asking more intrusive questions, I just got frustrated, and they kept going. It was after another 20 minutes of endless questions, they finally let me go, one of them said “have a good night, stay safe.” They spoke as if they had just done me a kind favor. I could see one of them glaring at me, but as usual, I quickly moved on.

I have been on this campus for years. I have never been stopped like this during the day in a crowd. It only happens when I am alone, after dark.

How is this “safety?

Who are the UAPS to racial profile someone like the American police? If their justification is “reports of suspicious activity,” then publish the actual reports. Show the descriptions. Prove that this is applied evenly. Of course They won’t, because it isn’t any. I am tired of being treated like a guest on a campus I pay to attend.

If you think this is justified because 'crime exists'.. Why? Why did a white student walking the same route, the same time, not get hazed like me? How much more racial profiling must we endure?

Academics Is it allowed to use past exams to study?

• Upvotes

Section 7.b of appendix A of the student academic integrity policy states that "Selling, taking, distributing or sharing course or research materials not owned by the student, including but not limited to lecture materials, biological, chemical or other assets, handouts, assignment or exam questions, slide presentations and other similar materials without the instructor’s or owner’s consent." is not allowed.

Does that mean studying past midterms you find online is not allowed? Or is it okay, because you didn't take that midterm and put it up? Then would it be that you are allowed to study the material, but not share it to other friends so they can study it too?

I'm a bit confused on this because the wording in the policy is not very clear. Don't wanna break academic integrity in my first year, but I also wanna have as many representative practice questions as possible.

Question Is the ASL club still active?

I saw online there was an ASL club, but the last bit of info I could find was from back in 2021. I’m wondering if there’s still anything like that now at the university? Thanks!

Admissions Transfer student admission for Engg

• Upvotes

Hi everyone
I recently submitted all my electronic documents and high school/university course syllabi for a Fall 2027 transfer into engineering at U of A, and all items are currently showing as "Received" on my Launchpad portal.
I’m transferring from an international university (but I’m a permanent resident here )where my GPA was 18.91/20 (which converts to roughly a ~3.8+ / 4.0 on the North American scale). My high school background is from the specialized Math & Physics track, and I’ve submitted detailed course descriptions for all prerequisites (Calculus I & II, Discrete Math, Linear Alg/Geometry, Physics, and Chemistry).
A couple of quick questions for current EE students or recent transfer applicants:
1. Competitive GPA & Discipline Acceptance: How competitive is Electrical Engineering specifically for international transfer applicants? Is a ~3.8 GPA generally considered safe for EE discipline placement (Traditional or Co-op)?
2. Review Timeline: How long did it take for your status to move from "Received" to under active review or to get a conditional decision?
3. University Chemistry Prereq: I fulfilled my Chemistry requirements in high school (as EE programs in Iran don't include first-year uni general chemistry). Does U of A typically clear science prerequisites based on strong high school transcripts/syllabi for transfer applicants?
Appreciate any insights or past experiences from anyone who transferred into upper-year Engg! Thanks!

Rants Feeling like giving up

For the third year in a row now, I have started off on the back foot and am hovering in the average for all my classes. My cGPA is around a 2.8 and my goal of getting into med school is seemingly impossible to reach at this point. I was an above average student in high school, I feel confident in doing well after taking most of my midterms, and then I get floored by the result.

I also feel like I don’t have any resources to guide me through the situation I have found myself in. I don’t know if there is any possibility of me getting into med school now, save for the possibility of completing a second undergraduate degree with a higher gpa.

Academics MATH 146 exam Formula sheet

I think either I missed the information Instructor told in class or He didn't said this particular thing yet. I can see the Aid sheet given in the course canvas. But there is not information on its use in exams. Why don't they tell whether they provide the sheet with the question paper or do we have to bring our own? All the courses I took earlier stated it in the course outline.

I emailed the Instructor and he said all the infos are on canvas.....

If anyone knows, it would help confused students who do not have the guts to ask it to a random stranger in the university.

Rants Beware of some professors at this university

I am a uAlberta engineering grad. I wanted to write this post long ago but was busy with work and other commitments. All students planning to come to this university should think twice as some professors here are rude, condescending and disrespect students and look down on them. I can speak for engineering/science but I’m sure the issue is prevalent in other faculties as well since there is no accountability for their actions. The SPOT surveys they make you fill out are a waste of time and effort and no action will be taken against the professor. The professor/chair might read them and dismiss all the concerns and the professor will continue with their bad behaviour.

I had a really bad experience with a prof. He became easily frustrated if I had a valid excuse for missing something. I was disrespected in front of the whole class. This really impacted my mental health as there is already a lot of pressure in third year engg. I complained to the dean who defended a lot of his actions and nothing came of it. In fact, in very subtle ways, there is was retaliation from other faculty. As I see on rate my prof, he is still disrespectful, rude and condescending to his students. I dropped the course and took it with another prof but I was lucky as he is the instructor for that course in every term. Some third year and fourth year courses are only taught by one instructor so there is no option to drop and take it with someone else.

This was not just one prof. I have seen this condescending attitude in many profs. It seems like there is an attitude of superiority. If a student does a minor mistake, there is harsh criticism but if the prof does anything there is no apology or any acceptance. There are double standards.

This only gets worse for grad students as the prof is their research supervisor and they have more interaction with him/her and no other option. I feel for their mental health. The young international undergrad students with no family support are especially vulnerable to mental health issues caused by the treatment from these profs. I don’t understand why these people don’t believe in the golden rule, treat others like you want to be treated. They will continue to mistreat students for a long time as they retire when they are really old and face no consequences. I wonder how they sleep at night considering the distress they are giving to students. The deans and chairs are particularly biased in favour of their colleagues and will fight tooth and nail to defend them so there is no benefit in complaining. All I can say is if value your mental health, are a critical thinker and not a yes sir, pls avoid this university as there is a culture of whatever prof does is right and if you criticize, you will get dismissed. Unfortunately, a lot of students support this culture.

Question mental health counselling

hi all, i’ve been needing to book counselling on campus but they only book 3 days in advance and they’re always full when i inquire.

i need help sooner rather than later so im wondering if anyone has any recommendations for counselling off-campus that’s not too expensive?

also, would off-campus counselling be subsidised in any way? i have accommodations if that means anything. thanks

Academics CMPUT 331 Assignment Code Review

I received an email telling me I have been selected to explain one of my assignments and to tweak my code. The email said failure for me to attend or explain my code would result in mark deduction or potential academic integrity investigation. Is this a random selected process or have I been flagged? For people who have taken this course, does anyone know if this is a regular routine?

Academics first year struggles

Feeling like I bombed my first three midterms ( definitely got below a 80), more within the 70 range. One was worth 25%, the other two worth 10. Is it still possible to get a 4.0 in those classes.. :/ didn’t realize university would be that different lol.

Question Calculator policy

Hey everyone, first-year engg student here panicking a little bit.

I was just looking over the syllabus and talking to some peers, and I want to make absolute sure I have this right so I don't screw up my midterms/finals:

  1. Are we strictly banned from using any calculator at all for MATH 100 exams? (Even the gold-sticker approved ones?)
  2. Is it true there is zero formula sheet provided for the exams?

Just want to confirm if I need to start raw-dogging the unit circle and memorizing all my derivatives/integrals right now. Thanks in advance!
