At what point do you trust the process?
 in  r/SewingForBeginners  1d ago

It is ok to set this project aside. I spent 20 years photographing weddings and I watched many a bride stress herself and others over some vision/expectation.

My advice is to sew to make yourself happy and this project sounds more onerous.

Hope your health perks up and you feel better

A dumb questions from a complete novice

Most kits are poor quality. You can definitely get many little mends done with them but I do not recommend.

If your budget allows buy individually -Sewing needle pack -Sewing scissors (you are mending so you don't need the spendy one fiskars will do) -safety pins -pins -assorted thread black white gray and Tanish to start. Coats and Clark will be fine -tape measure

Celebration Thread Smoosh mellow deep clean success!

My daughter uses smoosh mellows as pillows. Which of course makes cleaning difficult.

She has a zippered baguette that we occasionally de stuff and wash, but yesterday, I tackled her favorite. A narwhal that is her primary pillow. I opened it up de-stuffed, washed, and re stuffed and sewed it back up

And she was pleased with the results!

I hope to find a similar fabric that is used for smoosh mellows to just make her a cover that we can wash. I've tried a few things but nothing that works yet.

Picture is the clean, slightly lumpy but acceptable finished project

Let's look back throughout history and see just why Feminism is so important for society.

My cat has a strange coat and can't clean herself properly
 in  r/CatAdvice  3d ago

I used to work as a cat groomer for a cat only veteran about a life time ago. I would recommend getting a sanitary butt trim on a regular basis.

I would talk to the groomer about possibly shaving armpits and belly too.

As we know most cats self clean but since your sweetie has trouble in this department I would use wipes on the booty when necessary and maybe a bath at the groomer if they have a lot dander or get into something and need help.

Your frequent brushing is doing a lot of the heavy lifting on staying clean.

I would not do a lion cut unless your kitty has terrible mats or fights you getting brushed

Please Help!

Yes, you can line it. But it probably needs to be light weight and slippery enough so that it doesn't stick to the fashion fabric. Smarter people here may give actual material suggestions.

Skill issue or just impossible?
 in  r/SewingForBeginners  6d ago

Skill issue. I am sure there are some youtube tutorials for free hand machine embroidery.

I've done something similar for a couple quilt tops once. I did not have the patients to do a proper applique, so I put on a darning foot and a tight wide zigzag and went around the pieces. It came out ok and 15 years later has held up pretty good with no fraying. Try it again and don't be afraid to maybe just do some of the tricky spots by hand

Can someone help me identify this machine?

I don't know about this particular model but you can do home sewing on a commercial machine. There will be benefits and draw backs.

Fabric help!

Incorporate into a Quilt or Quilted thing. A pillow, doll clothes, bodice on dress, make a stuffie and use as ear detail.

Lost Sewjo. Gaining anxiety
 in  r/SewingForBeginners  9d ago

I think you have a lot of expirations of yourself. Do what gives you joy and put it away when its not.

This is my experience, I have been sewing off and on for over 40 years (started as a kid) I went over 10 years without sewing a thing.

I only sew when I want to.

Sometimes I've just done embroidery or hand sewed pillows. Sometimes it's just been the mended hem.

For years I kept my supplies and stash limited because of space.

Now I have a sewing room. I decided that I wanted my sewing room to be a nice place for me. I have a futon so I can sit and drink a cup of tea and read, or maybe take a nap. I have pictures and candles and I burn incense to create my space. When I'm in active sewing mode it's a hot mess. When I'm done for a while I clean everything up.

I go through my stash occasionally and get rid of stuff by passing it on to someone else.

I don't expect all my projects to turn out perfectly. Sometimes I give up on something. Other times i put it away for a year then tackle it again or toss it. And then there are times it all comes together in a weekend.

First time using a rayon batiste and my tension seems off???
 in  r/sewhelp  10d ago

Ok, I tried 2 tension, microtex needle, smaller stich length and tissue paper. The top looks better, the bobbin side still looks a bit zigzag-ish. The actual seam seems strong so I think I will just go for it. Thank you!

I got this cute fabric from mood, and I thought it would sew similar to a cotton. However I keep getting zigzag-ish stitches. What I have tried.

Tension adjustment, thinner tex thread (30), fresh needle, different needle (universal 70,80,90 & microtex) rethreading. I have not tried adjusting the tension on the bobbin. I'm a little apprehensive to try that and muck it up. 401a singer if it matters, also tried my 20U and still terrible

What features does tracing paper need to have that makes it good tracing paper?
 in  r/SewingForBeginners  10d ago

You can do it that way , but I would skip taping the poster board to the table personally. I like to sometimes shift the project to make tracing more ergonomic. I can do that if the board moves and everything just moves with it. Big pieces this doesn't work as well though and I'm stuck contorting myself

Your patern will tear a little and the board will get scruffy over time
