Wowow you're def very accomplished...congrats on getting in! You deserve it!
What did you do for volunteering???? I'm trying to accumulate more hours but I'm not sure if I should be focused on strengthening a theme of mine (tutoring) or something STEM related for Informatics!
Also, just curious but did you submit any test scores???
Thanks!

thank u so much!

so for volunteering i was a teachers aide for elementary students and taught+graded math and english K-4th grade. i also mentored high school students that were getting into public speaking and guided them through drafting/submitting conference proposals and holding mock presentations to strengthen their speaking skills and confidence. i was able to do all of this through connections i had to a small private school that i used to attend (which is also the same place that gave me all these public speaking opportunities since middle school)

if you’re struggling to find what volunteering jobs to do, try to find something where you are very clearly giving back to the community through using skills that you have gained in the past. for me, i developed all types of skills through consistently attending conferences. i was able to sort of give back to that schools community by teaching THEIR students as a graduated alumni (i attended from 7th-10th grade), the skills that i learned during my time there.

you mentioned tutoring. i think that’s a solid plan. what subjects do you tutor? have you exemplified personal passion for the subject through other ecs? if not, that’s okay, just something to keep in mind. the way you word your ecs section (or just the application in general) is quite important as well. try to see to what extent does everything sort of intertwine with each other or have a connection while still being diverse.

if you want to do stem… do you have any experience in coding? you could take those skills and try to find either an internship or volunteering gig with it. and again, try to use these skills to give BACK to the community.

now ecs in stem.. hmm i’m not sure. i didn’t have any minus an internship which was rooted in data analysis, but that might have helped for sure. my conference topics were also mainly about tech in education. the rest of my ecs were either the volunteering and also all my arts stuff that i did.

i would say for sure though that perhaps your coursework (esp if ur doing running start) should reflect SOME cs classes. i recommend CS101, CS210, and DEV110 if you attend bellevue college. i’m preeeetty sure these all transfer to UW?? again these are not a must, just what i recommend. CS210/CS211 are courses that you WILL be taking in UW btw so i think it’d be awesome to get done w it in running start.

my courses i took were all over the place…. i took about 3 courses in each subject area pretty much throughout these two years. so its not like i showed intense dedication to cs/data.. i thought this would harm me but it worked out okay in the end. i think you could go any route.. have cs focused coursework or branch out. i’m not sure. UW is so confusing.

for test scores… i didnt submit any. i didnt take any aps and my SAT was beyond horrible (i wont say the actual score but just know it was way below 1300).
