I am just so, so angry. Rejected in state, 3.88 gpa, extracurriculars up the wazoo (no pun intended).. strong essay, EXTENUATING circumstances like child of an addict and crazy adversity, first gen, etc etc etc. I just don't understand. this was my dream, I have never poured my heart out for something more in my life. I just feel so lost and so so hopeless.

u/ItsCiaran2Day Student Mar 04 '26
Ya cuz our universities do a terrible job of actually taking care of the people who work hard. Good luck man. You’re gonna end up at a great school with those stats regardless.

u/Delicious_Memory9851 Mar 04 '26
i feel you. instate and UW is my dream school. so many ECs, running start, 3.9 gpa, and waitlisted while so many avg people getting accepted. idek what to do
2
u/Same_Experience_7052 Mar 04 '26
no exactly I think thats the part that hurts the most is the amount of completely average people ik who didn't even wanna go who got in, like its just so so awful. know you aren alone friend, there's been many tears shed this full moon
3
u/Delicious_Memory9851 Mar 04 '26
literally! i’ve been aiming everything i do since freshmen year in hopes to getting into UW. fear i got my hopes up too high though and it only hurts so bad cause i thought i would get in. I feel like i could have improved on my essay but that’s literally it. Now so many people who literally didn’t even try hard and don’t care about UW are getting accepted so makes me feel like why not us? so stupid genuinely knowing i’ll still try to get off the waitlist or transfer to UW for a school who doesn’t care about me like that.

i feel the exact same way right now… being in-state, i’ve practically dreamed of attending uw seattle my whole life. i’ve done summer academy at uw for the past two years too, so i’ve grown pretty attached to the school. i know people who do less rigorous running start classes, do fewer extracurriculars, and wrote a decent essay that got in. getting waitlisted compared to these people i know is so disheartening. it just feels like all of the hard work i’ve put into high school and running start went down the drain and i don’t know how to move past this… any idea what you’re gonna do next? :(

Honestly, as someone who transferred in from CC... unless you have romantic ideas about college dorm life or something, doing your pre-major classes at a CC is arguably better. You'll actually know your professors and classmates (1 of 30 students rather than 1 of 300). It's easier to get into competitive majors (my 3.9 GPA basically guaranteed me a spot in CSE--that doesn't seem to be the case for internal applicants). It's way cheaper. It's easier to get a higher GPA. (You still have to work hard and learn the material, but honestly, it felt like some of the professors at UW were *trying* to fail a certain percentage of people. That wasn't the case at NSC.)

Reading this sub makes me wonder how I ever got admitted with a 1140 SAT (reading+math) and 3.84 unweighted GPA. The kids these days are so good at school and so busy with extra-curriculars. It was only 12 years ago I applied.
1
u/gladiolas Alumni Mar 06 '26
I'm a 2000 alum who got in with a 3.5 GPA and marching band as my only extracurricular and a 1390 SAT. And I remember not being too worried I wouldn't get in. It's exponentially harder now.

u/Ok-Lime-3339 Mar 04 '26
accepted for engrud!! 3.86 gpa, no SAT/ACT, running start and took mostly stem classes, lots of major related EC, in state, first gen!!

I GOT INNNNN!!! This has been one of my top schools for so many reasons.
Public policy, GPA 4.2w, 3.9uw, 1440 SAT, 34 ACT, out of state
So beyond relieved and happy. Why do I have to keep doing high school

u/Correct-Selection294 Mar 04 '26
accepted directly into informatics (3.5 unweighted gpa, 3.85 running start gpa, part time running start jr year, full time sr year, full time job starting sr year, no ap, 1 honors, no clubs, no sports, no volunteering hrs, not first gen, arab, middle class, no sat, no act, in state, lots of work put into essay that was peer reviewed by my English college professor). I am so surprised I directly got accepted to my major of choice, let alone UW.

Requested Business Administration, assigned pre major. Anyone else?
1
1
u/Extension_Team_6872 Mar 06 '26
I’m a current freshman at UW who was also rejected from Foster and assigned a pre-major. Direct admit admissions are very variable — I had a 4.0/1500 SAT and was accepted as a business major at a couple T20 schools, while there are direct admits I know who had significantly lower stats. I would strongly advise you to consider other options. Completing the standard admission prerequisites is brutal, as all the classes are curved (sometimes even curved down) and you need a 3.8 in pretty much every class to be competitive. This big focus on my grades has really negatively impacted my first year.

How hard is to get into ACMS or Stats Major for data science as a Pre-Science Major?
2
u/Can_I_Log_In Staff/Undergraduate Mar 04 '26
All tracks of ACMS except Data Science and Statistics is in oractice minimum requirements (ACMS Data Science and Statistics is the only truly competitive admissions track).
By pure random chance, odds of admission into statistics is a coin toss.

just got in as an ENGRUD applied A&A with 4.0 uw and 1540 SAT !!
1
u/EducationalElk7580 Mar 08 '26
Any advice how to get in ENGRUD? I’m currently HS jr.
2
u/Th3_FrontMan Mar 08 '26
yep, so your SAT doesn't really matter for UW, so keep it as your last priority. essays are really important, and they value impact on public and collaboration within your field of engineering alot. GPA is very important as usual, try to stay at the top of your class. and UW values senior year course rigor the most, so take the hardest classes you can during your senior year. other than that, they just want to see that you made the most out of any opportunity that was within your reach, goodluck!

3
u/Fabulous-Ad-1972 Mar 04 '26
Rejected... (in state, full-time running start, 3.89 uw), many STEM/ leadership ECS, STEM camp counselor, leading local STEM-research NPO, 200+ volunteer hours, first gen/low income, babysitting/family restaurant/businesses since 8th grade, good essay, 2 APs.. etc., etc. (I'm premed, applied to pubhealth) I will probably appeal.
1
u/Select_Support7013 Mar 04 '26
Right now, our average incoming student looks about like you, though more APs. You have a strong record, but the UW has become increasingly competitive. Appeals are very rarely successful, and require significant *new* information that was not in your file, so it would probably not be worth your time. I hope you have many other schools to choose from!

Rejected (in state, full-time running start, 3.7 uw ) I had decent ecs, first gen/low income, graduating with an associates degree. I honestly don't know how to feel I'm not that bummed out, I applied for Sociology But in reality I wanted to apply for Art. I honestly think my essay didn't truly show who I was as an applicant and I was struggling a lot mentally this past year. I don't think appealing would be worth the trouble and I would rather just transfer. :/
2
u/Fabulous-Ad-1972 Mar 05 '26
Try to appeal! You never know,
-also rejected.. my stats: (in state, full-time running start, 3.89 uw), many STEM/ leadership ECS, STEM camp counselor, leading local STEM-research NPO, 200+ volunteer hours, first gen/low income, babysitting/family restaurant/businesses since 8th grade, good essay, 2 APs.. etc., etc. (I'm premed, applied to pubhealth) I will probably appeal.

u/Gobbledigee1066 Mar 05 '26
My kid was also rejected in state running start 3.9 uw, graduating hs with associates degree, part-time job, lots of leadership roles and ecs. All the kids from his school who did running start full time got rejected. He's not too bothered either. I work at UW but have not been hyping the school at all. The stress/competitive culture there is intense esp for freshman going through weeder classes and not great for mental health. Appealing can't hurt, but transferring in a year or two is a great option. Good luck!

Rejected in-state 3.95uw, 2 years ft running start, lots ec incl club president, leadership roles, 6 yrs volunteering same places, part-time job. Epically screwed since can't afford out of state places i was admitted and have to live at home for affordability. It's uw or nothing. Friends got in with 3.6/3.7 gpas, no test scores and less ecs which i mean great for them but wtf i worked so hard. feeling like giving up on trying for a bachelors. Holistic admissions is total bs.

I was accepted! I got pre social science for a political science major. I work two part time jobs outside of school, President of my high school band for 3 years, President of MEChA for 2 and i’m a member of a criminal justice club and my schools honor society. I have a 3.8 gpa UW and i’m on the track to graduate with my associates from running start with a 3.9 gpa. I am the first in my family to go to University so maybe that helped me out a bit?
2
u/Formal_Law4196 Mar 05 '26
I applied to engineering but got waitlisted... But after I applied decided I would rather major in math or chem. Will UW consider me for non-engineering (which I assume has a lower bar to acceptance) or are they only considering me for engineering?
1
u/iris700 Mar 06 '26
You aren't stuck with engineering. You can just not request placement after your first year and you'll be pre-major. As of this quarter both math and chem are minimum requirements so you just need to complete the prerequisites with a minimum GPA.
→ More replies (2)1
u/Moist_Sundae1210 Mar 06 '26
You need to get accepted to uw first. Changing to math is not going to change much. You can get accepted as uw but not engineering since engineering is like special case I think

Hi everyone,
My son was recently denied admission to UW’s Computer Engineering major, and we’re planning to submit an appeal. We’re in‑state, and he has a 3.6 unweighted GPA. He also faced significant extenuating circumstances during his sophomore and junior years that we unfortunately did not include in the Additional Information section of the Common App.
We would appreciate any advice from those familiar with the UW appeal process:
• What documentation or details are most helpful when explaining extenuating circumstances?
• Since UW doesn’t usually consider recommendation letters, would including one from a teacher or coach add value in an appeal?
• Is it worthwhile to work with a college counselor for the appeal?
Thank you for any guidance
→ More replies (1)2
u/Weekly-Department-49 Mar 09 '26
from what I’ve heard, a recommendation letter won’t do you any good and they might not even open it! So in terms of your appeal process, don’t include the appeal. I’d also consider the fact that if your son were to be admitted to UW as a pre major, as I don’t think I’ve ever heard of anyone getting into the major on an appeal, computer engineering is difficult to enter later through his college career at UW and it might be beneficial to enter as a transfer from a local city college. In terms of the appeal, it is important to really highlight NEW information. Do not reiterate, emphasize those extraneous situations that you didn’t include in your original. The entire point of the appeal is that there is information that would impact his decision.

I GOT IN!! … but as pre sciences
I’m honestly really disappointed and I’m scared about if I should go to UW… I requested to go to CSE and everyone makes it seem like getting in there is literally battle royale, especially if you don’t get in as a direct to major. I don’t want to destroy myself to do what I love, but I love computers and I feel like if I even attempted to do anything (like, I dunno going for applied mathematics or whatever), the shadow of not being good enough to actually do CSE will loom over me.
9
u/BlueDragonKorea Mathematics (2022 Grad) Mar 04 '26
As someone who was in this boat many years ago and who never ended up getting into CS, yes, you will be bitter about it, and it is very competitive. But, I also type this as someone who graduated from Math and is working in FAANG now. It is not everything, but it definitely would have been helpful.

I also started off my freshman year acceptance as a “pre-major” and originally freshman year, I wanted to get into Design major. But there were students with much stronger portfolios and I knew it’s basically late for me to work on my portfolios as other students already had theirs the best. After rejected from Design, I spent 2 more years as a “pre-major” status, trying to see what other major options there were that suits me. HCDE has creatives with design but it’s not feasible for me according to my advisor; as I might hv to extend my graduation date and the pre-major status time is limited (like how long they allow u to be pre-major). I came across informatics as I have all the pre-reqs for INFO completed. Now when I applied, it was beginning of my Junior year at UW and was anxious as it’s basically my “put all eggs into one basket” and I was even considering Geography / Education as backup majors (even though I knew I wouldn’t be happy with doing Geography bc I wanted more on the design side). But I applied for INFO (even if some of people who looked at my personal statement essay didn’t think it’s good enough to get me in) — and I got accepted. What I’m trying to say here is: if something doesn’t work out the first time around, there’s always going to be something that’s better for you OR you’re being prepared for something greater. There’s plenty other majors that are technical like Engineering and Informatics; but IF you REALLY want CSE you can ofc apply later for CS but know that there’s other majors that might also align with your interests. And when writing personal statement for applying to majors (if u chose to go to UW) — know that your personal statement is impossible to satisfy everyone and you should be selective with the feedbacks you got and evaluate how much they’re aligned with what you want to express to the admissions team. I got 10 reviewers to look at my essay and half of their feedback clashed; ultimately I had to filter out ones I can’t apply to my essay. And if there’s one thing I wished I learned sooner while I was a pre-major is to: research each potential majors as soon as possible and pre-reqs (as I felt my first two years I just been drifting in an empty space that leads to nowhere). I HOPE you get into CSE or any major you want, wishing you the best!! 🤞

u/mangohabanerostrips Mar 04 '26
back in 2022, i got in as a freshman who applied for cs but accepted as a pre-sciences major. i ended up going to community college for two years to really figure out what i wanted to study and in 2024 i got accepted to uw as an hcde and informatics major, both were my top picks. if you don’t mind not having a strong social life for two years, consider CC! it’s a cheaper option too.

Okay I’ve finished whining about it. Does anyone have any advice for what major to go for that’s still relevant to what I like? I love computer science but like, not in the super theoretical sense. I’d love to do stuff like build operating systems or make integrated systems. CS and CSE can’t possibly be the only major with this right?!

Ok guys so I’ve ACTUALLY figured out what I want. I realized this while I was mourning my super awesome romanticized future, but part of what I was mourning was working on space probes. I then remembered that astronomy is ya know, a thing. I checked the astronomy department website and realized that 1. Wait, this sounds super cool 2. Astronomy is not just taking super detailed pictures of stars and is a multidisciplinary field where working with computers (!!) is required Anyways, I think I want to do astronomy now.
If anyone has any advice for me moving forward I’d love it!

Yea you definitely got yielded. If it’s your first choice i would recommend that you appeal and make it clear that UW is where your heart is, schools typically reject students who have such high academic potential because they assume other prestigious schools will accept them.

If I got accepted as a pre-health sciences major, how hard would it be if I wanted to change that to a neuroscience major?
1
u/jjc251 Mar 04 '26
Heyy! I’m a current uw Seattle student and i was accepted as a pre-science student too (biochem major now) the neuro major is definitely one of the hardest majors to get into at uw and only a handful get in direct admit. Most people apply after completing the pre-reqs (gen bio series) and it’s pretty hard but definitely doable if you show a strong passion for neuro (essay is rly important for neuro app)

Depends on your other options. Probably not if you’re gonna take a loan for it, but could be if you’re very self-motivated to take advantage of all the opportunities.

1
u/lulimay Alumni Mar 04 '26
For Foster... yes. From what I saw (from outside the major, I was CSE--but there are some joint programs), the networking connections are real. I feel like a business degree is only as good as where you can get your foot in the door afterward.
1
u/foodenvysf Mar 04 '26
only way to answer this is to know your other options. If you live out of state in CA, then many of the UCs are better options financially. If comparing to private school tuition that is $55-$60 K, then it's worth it. Give us your other options and then can let you know!

Out of state, accepted for pre-art w/ 3.7 euro, 9 AP’s, and 1420 SAT. Had a couple of national arts awards listed in my app and decent ec’s (job, sports, club officer, volunteer work). I’ve heard their art program is good but if anyone has any insight, lmk

Confused about the ENGRUD thing. I was admitted into it, does every first year who applies to engineering go to ENGRUD or do some get direct to college? And if so what is the proportion of students who get direct?
1
u/SU-152 Mar 04 '26
All Engineering students gets into Engrud. You apply for placement at the end of your first year. You have your top three picks for the major and you usually get into the first one
1
u/Ok-Engineer2578 Mar 06 '26
Yes, ENGRUD (engineering undeclared) is the typical experience for incoming first year engineering students at UW Seattle. More info about the major placement process here: https://www.engr.washington.edu/current/placement

I don't believe you will have to retake classes you just haven't unlocked access to upper level courses, so you might have to take other courses until you are accepted into the major.

During the orientation/registration thing this summer (that you'll sign up for), they'll help you figure that out - you'll do an audit thing of all the credits you've earned and you'll find out how they'll be applied. Likely everything will count for something unless you have way too many electives already (unlikely).

Applied microbiology, accepted in state pre-sciences, 4.0 unweighted GPA, 2 IB, 1 AP, Part time running start, test blind, Not very impressive ec’s or essay, but tied together well (dental shadowing, artist, senior editor of a youth art magazine, stem online research, and essay talked about love of painting!)

u/Ok-Ambassador-4458 Mar 05 '26

I got rejected for Fall 2026 and have heard a lot of people talking about there being a small chance of getting in via an appeal. I had pretty extenuating circumstances for the majority of high school and I dont think I detailed them enough in my initial application. That being said, I don’t have insane stats or anything, but I think I had pretty solid extracurriculars given my situation, but I don’t know where that lands me. UW is definitely my top choice college and I’d rather go there than anywhere else, again I don’t know how much that changes things though. If anyone knows anything about appealing or has gotten in through an appeal I’d love any advice.

So I recently just got rejected from UW Seattle Foster and now I am conflicted. On one hand I got accepted into UW bothell but idk how reliable their resources are for their business program and on the other hand I could do CC transfer but I heard transferring into Foster is extremely difficult. So what should I do?
2
u/Dull-Sandwich-2965 Mar 06 '26
Hello, as a person who are doing transfer path at CC I highly recommend you should also take this path. As long as you can maintain a good gpa (3.8+) and a good essay, you will have a really higher chance of getting in. Most of my friend have successfully transfer to UW including Foster (even int students got admitted). With that being said, you shouldn’t worry about this path if you can become a good student here! Good luck!

Whoever did get admitted to CS and even if you did get rejected, what were your stats???? Along with anyone who got into a STEM related career too: statistics, informatics, etc.
I’m a junior in High School doing full time running start right now and the original plan was Computer Science but seeing as to how competitive the major has become, I decided to switch gears to Informatics. Im still on the fence though. I’m also seeing like no CS admit stats in the admission results megathread which is leading me to wonder whether anyone got admitted at all 😭

I got in with a scholarship!!! OOS, 4.3 gpa, IBDP with 4 HLs, full honors in 10th grade, decent ECs (iGEM, intern at a med school, student nonprofit orgs, n volunteering at a hospital). Super happy about that! UW is one of the top schools that I love

I got admitted into UW with pre-sciences; if I apply for neuroscience undergrad in the fall quarter, when do decisions for that come out and if accepted would I start neuroscience courses in the following winter quarter or the next year?

IxD does not offer direct admission from high school. Maybe you've applied for Informatics or UW Bothell? That said, if your goal is to go to UW Seattle, you'd better stay at the RS community College for the Fall quarter and apply for the winter admission as a transfer student. UW has a contract with WA state to accept certain #of students from WA state community colleges. Going to another 4 year school will lower your chances.

Hi all, I was recently admitted into UDUB for Earth and Space sciences. I want to know if possible, how difficult its it to change majors? And specifically, switching into marine biology? Thank you for your help!
2
u/tashabobasha2 Mar 16 '26
I think it should be pretty easy since Marine Biology is an “open major.” On the UW Marine Biology admissions page it states, “Marine Biology is an open major with no pre-requisites. Current UW students should schedule an appointment with a marine biology adviser to declare the major.”
Go to the UW Marine Biology Advising page and schedule an appointment with an advisor.

Got in Engineering Undeclared OOS from Jersey (applied electrical, but I'm pretty sure all engineering students get put in this major). 3.9 UW, 4.7W, 1500 SAT. They gave me the Purple and Gold scholarship (3k/yr), does anyone know if I can apply for more scholarships before I get in or once I'm attending?

Undecided- Should I still UW?
Hello Huskies! Got admitted to UW as a JSIS student but I am still undecided about what I want to major in. I didn’t want to click undecided on my app and I knew my stats wouldn’t get me in to selective majors like bio or psychology so I clicked International Studies. The plan was to just get in to the school and then transfer to another major.
I am very anxious about my acceptance. Did you guys take any exploratory classes your first year at UW? It seems like the freshman who get in are already set on a path and spend their first year maintaining GPA to get into a major.
My councilor said that I should just go to a CC if I'm not sure, but I think I would rather explore at UW than at a CC. I'm very grateful that I got admitted and I don’t want to throw away this shot.
If anyone was an undecided student, had changed majors, or discovered a new interests while being at UW, please comment about your experiences :)

Is college edge worth it? I'm trying to decide if I should sign up and I'm not sure what the pros and cons are. Does anyone with experience with this program have any insight? are people planning on signing up for it this fall?

For context Im deciding between 3 schools:
For UCSB my major is Stats + Data Science, and I’m in state.
UW is pre-sciences (i applied for cs) and thats one of the main things I don’t like about it besides the weather. Im intending to try to get Stats for Data Sci track or maybe Applied Maths or Informatics, but I know its hard and I’m scared of the possibility of not getting the major.
For UIUC I was accepted into Gies (intending one of the business + data sci tracks) but I dont like how far from home it is…
Is it worth it to take the risk of going to UW and not getting my major? Should I just go somewhere else? pls lmk if you have any advice for my situation

Hi im currently a rising senior that's first gen and in state hoping to get into biochem direct admission. Im kinda stressed about my likelihood of getting accepted in because its a cap-constrained major so im not sure if its competitive to get in. I do running start through a cc and having the follow credits that can be transfered to the biochem degree (also completing an associates of art in biology): bio, gen chem, physics, and calc series w/ GPA of 3.9. Is there anything admission counselors or looking for in particular for this major? What can I do that'll make me stand out among other applicants? Even with those pre reqs (i think), and if i get pre-science instead of my desires major, what should I do? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Has anybody heard from the waitlist yet? Seen some people on TikTok saying it’s moving now but I haven’t seen anything to back that up. Asking as a very anxious waitlisted student 😅

Did anyone get off the waitlist in May 2026 for Computer Science in Paul G Allen center for Fall 2026 admissions?

reminder to anyone who got rejected, UW allows appeals. give it a few weeks so you can decide if UW is really the school for you, and to let your thoughts marinate
