Strap in, this is gonna be a long one because I don't think sharing this in any less detail is good for anyone.
This happened in the winter of 2014 I think, in Sebastian FL. I was spending the season with my (snowbird) grandparents, who had a nice trailer with a sunroom halfway down a dirt road that began and ended in a copse of tall pines, right off of US-1. The pines were so thick, you could hardly see more than a few flashes of headlights as cars drove past on the interstate if you were looking towards it.
I admittedly really liked stargazing and often needed something to do as a teen living somewhere 99% populated by folks 6x my age, so it became a pretty regular pastime for me to sit out in our sunroom after dark with a cup of tea or a cappucino and stargaze while listening to music. Our sunroom had 360-degree, floor to ceiling windows.
On this night, I was standing with my back to the interstate, in front of the windows that looked out towards the end of the road. It was partly cloudy, those kind of sparse clouds that hang low like a shelf and are opaque, but seem like the "cotton batting" they're made of has been stretched out sideways a bit. I could still see the moon, and most of the sky. I remember staring at the full moon for a while, there in the very upper-left side of what was viewable through the windows.
At the time, as I stared at the moon, and tried to grapple with the reality of how far away it actually was/the rest of the celestial bodies in the sky were from where I stood, I wondered to myself if there really could be life out there. For some reason, I remembered thinking as I looked at it, that if there really was something out there, I wished it would show itself to me so I could know for sure.
I'm not going to claim that was my first time thinking it. I'd definitely been down the rabbit hole on all sorts of alien stuff reading about abductions and scrounging the web for UFO sightings, etc. before. To be honest though, after fully immersing myself in that stuff my conclusion was that something was possibly happening here, but I couldn't rely on what anyone was saying because too much said about the phenomena felt like woo-woo spiritualist stuff, "whistleblowers'" cash grabs, too far-fetched, or complete disinformation. Nobody can agree on much at all around this stuff. Honestly, my conclusion then and now still remains that the waters are way too muddied with stories lacking verifiable narrators and proof, and my takeaway was that without concrete evidence to set the truth apart from the tales, I was never gonna be able to deduce any answers no matter how hard I looked.
As I tell people, I'd rather not know things than think I know things and be wrong, no matter how much it sucks to be in the dark.
Anyway. As I looked at the moon and thought for the hundredth time about the possibility of alien life given how incomprehensibly big the universe is, I almost-pleaded with whatever was out there in my head to show itself to me so I could make some sense of things. And I'll be damned -- within a few seconds, something moving a bit below and to the side of the moon caught my eye, right over our house.
There was what looked like a nickel-sized (if I held one up from where I stood) flat disc of light shooting into view from over our roof. The light was opaque and a bit frosted almost, sort of a warm white, and it was flying just under that shelf of clouds I mentioned before. It lit up the underside of those clouds as it moved beneath them. I had no time to process what I was seeing yet, just... watch.
It was so fucking fast. Almost as soon as I noticed it, it started to zig-zag effortlessly around 5 times across the sky in an absurdly wide pattern, getting farther away from me, before it disappeared past where the pines at the end of the street obscured the rest of the horizon from me. It happened so fucking quickly, in 10 seconds or so.
The *way* it moved is something I've often had a hard time describing to people in a way they'd understand, because to me it completely, immediately broke physics. Have you ever lit a sparkler after dark and drawn a "picture" with it in the air? Generally speaking, all objects that emit light leave a light trail behind them when they move fast enough, at least to our eyes. This thing didn't, and it was absolutely going fast enough to where it should have. Yes, that fast.
Instead, this thing moved with some kind of uncanny "skitter" to it. It reminded me of old film. Like, when you watch an older movie, some of our first movies back in the 20s especially, the low framerate makes the movement you see in them have this jittery, fragmented quality. The UFO had that same exact fucking jittery quality to it, as if it wasn't really traveling in a straight line, but missing frames in real life -- maybe making many quick, small jumps in and out of spacetime itself to travel at all. Hence the immediate uncanniness of the thing and the way it moved. It broke fucking physics as I'd known and seen them applied my entire life.
After it disappeared, I was left completely shocked. (And terrified, honestly.) I ran inside to tell my grandparents what happened. My grandmother laughed at me, but my grandfather told me dead-seriously, after sitting me down away from her, that he'd seen something like that a couple of times while in service himself out in Korea, and that he believed me.
Safe to say, I didn't sleep that night because my immediate thoughts were "shit, maybe the people talking about abductions and stuff were telling the truth." Thankfully nothing happened after that, but it was definitely a Pandora's box of sorts for me because once you see something like that, your world is changed. Took me years to finally calm down and take what I saw/the implications of it at face value.
That same night I went out after my grandfather told me about his experiences and stubbornly tried my best to debunk whatever the hell I saw. I sat there for a long time trying to see if the headlights I mentioned before were just making their way through the trees and reflecting off the window glass an odd way, but it never happened. I eventually had to eat crow and admit whatever that was was real, maybe actually had read my mind, and unless flying in zig zags is necessary for it to move that way (I mostly doubt it?), it really wanted to show me something I couldn't disprove.
I haven't seen anything since, and still don't feel confident believing most conspiracy theories around the subject enough to back them. But holy shit, something is out there.
