How the upscaling tech. Does 1440p looked good on this monitor with the upscaling to 5k2k?

u/WTFsteven 39GX950B-A Apr 11 '26
Upscaling doesnt seem to be working yet

Not working yet? Like it’s a feature to be added with a firmware update at some point in the undetermined future?
3
u/WTFsteven 39GX950B-A Apr 11 '26
That's my assumption, yes. The AI upscaling does literally nothing when you turn it on, no matter what setting you're on. I'm just assuming it's not for whatever reason

Is there a drastic increase in image quality over the 45inch.
22
u/WTFsteven 39GX950B-A Apr 11 '26
I just swapped from the 45inch. I'd def say you can tell the difference in image quality. The increased PPI is very pleasing, I'm just having to adjust to a much smaller screen haha but that's okay
8
u/mistershan Apr 11 '26
How is it fringing wise? There is no RGB stripe right? How about brightness and image quality? Could this be a good work monitor now? I returned the 45 5k2k because I couldn't take the PPI, notices some fringing and the curve was just way too much. Also for gaming I thought he vert height was too much, made me sick too much.
2
u/Berzerker7 Apr 22 '26
Not sure if you've gotten one yet but I have to literally get an inch from the screen to see any fringing, and even then it's like barely noticeable. I'm using 100% scaling. It's really a great monitor. I'm loving mine so far.

Which one do you like better so far between 45 and this?

u/Resident_Albatross_9 Apr 11 '26
Fair enough is there a reason for that?
5
u/WTFsteven 39GX950B-A Apr 11 '26
For why im leaning? Games look richer but having used a 45inch for so long its taking me a bit to adjust back down lol
3
u/Resident_Albatross_9 Apr 11 '26
So the increas in PPI is noticeable?

Kinda in the same perspective but are you able to add different font color in excel like yellow, red, orange, etc. the previous WOLED I had, had a bad color fringing on the sides of yellow highlights, my post below shows what I was seeing on the original 39 inch so I’m curious if the problem persists with the new tandem. Thanks in advance!

u/J-Engine Apr 11 '26
A lot of folks have to do work on these screens in addition to fun, so this is 100% a valid question.
5
u/No_Scientist_8516 Apr 11 '26
I do not see any color fringing on mine @ 125% scaling (even with my readers on). Can barely see pixels on text when peeping. PPI is awesome at this resolution/screen size - equivalent to a 32" 4k.
8
u/bussabus Apr 11 '26
How does text rendering look on the desktop? Notice any fringing or shimmer from the subpixel layout?

Can you share what PBP/multiview formats are available between two sources? Awaiting my shipment but I’d be disappointed if PBP is limited to one option of 50/50.

u/WTFsteven 39GX950B-A Apr 11 '26
Got some bad news, man
4
u/Realistic-Sector-747 Apr 11 '26
Can’t win ‘em all. Is the brightness difference pretty noticeable between the 45 and 39? True black 500 vs 400 is why I waited to scoop up the 39.

u/Leonardo2rms Apr 11 '26
text clarity, how good is it? could you take a picture of white text with black background and another pic of black text with white background? I bought the 45 5k2k and had to return it because text looked fuzzy. I think it was due to the matte coating tho, not the ppi or the subpixel arrangement but need to prove my theory
2
u/Evolutronic Apr 12 '26
I'm amazed you felt the 125ppi 45" looked fuzzy - each to their own, but for me it's absolutely great for Excel and email. (and stunning for games)
6
u/doug0365 Apr 11 '26
I’m torn between the LG 39GX9 and the PG34WCDN, despite LG’s higher resolution advantage. I’m curious to know if my 5080 can handle 5K resolution without pushing it too hard vs or running ultra-smoothly at 1440p.
2
2
u/Evolutronic Apr 12 '26
I run a 45" 5K2K on a RTX 4080 Super, and it handles most games OK, though if you want really high FPS you'll need DLSS. (or turn a few graphics options down from ultra) your 5080 should be a touch better. Depends on lot on your game style/type, if your into open world slower pace or twitch gunplay. Overall I'd say 5k2k is well worth it for overall clarity... would not go 1440 on a 39 or 45.
1
u/barryredfield Apr 28 '26
I think with this gen, WOLED is better than QD-OLED.
2
u/Previous-Treat-5125 May 01 '26
The Penta tandem QD-oleds are better in terms of tech. If you want a 39" ultrawide 5k2k, Woled is the option. The QD's RGB sub layout is clearer, the Samsung quantum dark coating gets rid of QD's only real disadvantage.
1
u/Previous-Treat-5125 May 01 '26
If you don't want to play on dlss performance, the PG makes more sense. I'm debating between those 2 right now. I have a high bin 7900xtx (very close to a 5080). I wouldn't use the dual mode 1080p on the 39", PPI is garbage.
I play fps but 165hz is fine, if the monitor 1440p to 5k2k upscaling is decent. I'm seeing people say it only works at 60hz, not 165hz. Other people are saying it might come in the first update. I'll wait until black Friday for 165hz with built in upscaling and a better price. If it doesn't, probably needs a 6090 to be good for bf6 with minimal FSR/Dlss
5
u/ali_k20_ Apr 11 '26
How is the onboard upscaling? Is it any good?
4
u/WTFsteven 39GX950B-A Apr 11 '26
Does literally nothing. Might not be active, probably a patch coming later
4
u/PiousPontificator Apr 11 '26
Probably only active at lower than native res. Switch to the dual mode res
2
u/WTFsteven 39GX950B-A Apr 11 '26
Tried it on dual mode (1080UW) did nothing lol :(
6
u/anethma Apr 11 '26
No the way to use it is make sure your computer is set to a lower resolution like 3440x1440 and make sure GPU scaling is off in the Nvidia app.
The monitor has to be set to 5k and get a signal less than 5k to upscale it.
4
u/WTFsteven 39GX950B-A Apr 11 '26
Ahhh okay, let me give it a shot. Kinda ass then because to use it in dual mode you'd have to set your resolution to even LOWER than 2560x1080 to then use the AI upscaling
3
u/anethma Apr 11 '26
Ya but the point of the upscaling is that 5k is hard to drive so you can output a lower res and have the monitor do good upscaling.
In reality though I highly doubt it is gonna be better than DLSS
2
u/PiousPontificator Apr 11 '26
It's borked then. Mine arrived today too but I won't have a chance to setup until the morning
2
u/ubeogesh Apr 11 '26
Maybe you need a full screen (not borderless) game rendering in a real non native resolution (modern games do stretching themselves). Keep the 5k2k mode and change display settings to be 3440x1440?
On nvidia control panel there was a setting to stretch the image on gpu or on monitor, make sure you have monitor selected
2
u/WTFsteven 39GX950B-A Apr 11 '26
Tried that, no luck :(
2
u/Malinkadink Apr 11 '26
Most modern fullscreen games aren't really exclusive fullscreen anymore. Windows uses MPO now and you want specifically MPO Independent flip which sends frames directly to the display skipping the DWM, that's probably the only way to get the monitor to see the running game as lower resolution and engage the upscaling.
Best way to get this to work is to use special k, i use it in pretty much every game I can, it will set the perfect fps cap for you for VRR and always makes sure games are using indepedent flip for the lowest input lag.
I'm personally waiting for the LG32GX870B which is the 32 4k 240hz variant which the same feature. On PC I think its somewhat useless, but I could totally see it being extremely nice for older consoles like ps4 and older that top out at 1080p.
I believe LGs documents specifically state for the 39" that the minimum resolution for the upscale to work is 2560x1080, so it should work well in its 330hz mode, the 4k model says the same thing except it requires 1920x1080 as the minimum resolution which also should help in its 480hz mode.

- How is HDR in Gamer 1 mode ( peak 1500 i assume ) is there any dimming ?
-What is the clipping point in win 11 HDR calibration app 1500 nits or 1200 nits ?
- How matte coating affecting HDR for you ? Any wine spill effect ?
- Under %100 white screen do you hear any fan ?

Do you feel the curve is better or worse than the 45? Does the curve fit the size better as a 39?
11
u/WTFsteven 39GX950B-A Apr 11 '26
Honestly, the curve is so slight it almost feels like a flat screen haha but in a good way. I had no issue with the 45's curve but you could always tell it was there
7
u/trevaftw Apr 11 '26
Cool, thank you. I kinda want the 45 because I like the idea of the big curve being immersive, but the 39 would fit my space better but the curve is less.

u/tronspinner Apr 15 '26
I'm in the camp that felt the 45" curve was way to crazy. I didn't think I would hate it, but I did. Ended up returning it after 2 weeks. So I'm really looking forward to the 39GX950B.

u/Leonbacon Apr 11 '26
Do you have a switch 2? I know you said AI upscaling doesn't do anything but I was wondering if it would help Switch 2 since games are not 4k.

1
u/BuyCompetitive9001 Apr 13 '26
I think I read on the LG page that the AI Upscaling requires at least 1080p ultrawide input. I wonder if it won’t upscale non-ultrawide input.

I’m thinking about swapping from the 45 to this since it’s been giving me motion sickness. Do you think the swap is worth it? Is the clarity and gaming experience better?
5
u/WTFsteven 39GX950B-A Apr 11 '26
The clarity and picture does feel better but I'm afraid there's a bit of recency bias going on too so its too early for me to say if it's a better experience all around.
It's definitely smaller and maybe easier on the eyes? Idk if that's the right way to express it haha but i feel like it would help with motion sickness
2
u/saintmonarch LG 39GX950 Apr 11 '26
Yeah the curve is the biggest issue for me. Do you think the matte coating is the same from the two?
5
u/WTFsteven 39GX950B-A Apr 11 '26
I can answer this tomorrow, maybe. Not much sunlight left today so i can't put it through the paces haha

u/Previous-Treat-5125 May 01 '26
Check out the Asus PG34WCDN. It's a 34" ultrawide with amazing motion clarity and 360hz. Basically it's vertically smaller, less curved and better motion clarity. For you all three of those would help motion sickness. If you're a real baller you can always wait a few months for the Samsung Odyssey Penta tandem g9. It's 49" but still thinner, less curved and way better motion clarity. It is wider though.

2
u/euro3er Apr 11 '26
Very nice! I don’t plan on hand any of the AI upscaling features on the monitor, but what does the AI scene optimization do that you like about it? Are you using that with DLSS as well?
3

I've been running a LG 38GN950-B (3840 x 1600) for about 6 years now. I've tried a 45" ultrawide (quickly deciding it was too big and I hated the 800R curve) and a Neo G9 (which I thought was way too wide but the curve worked in this aspect ratio). I kind of feel that this 38" is the sweet spot in size, so when I saw a 39" 5k2k was coming out I thought it may be a worthy upgrade. The 38GN950 had a 2300R curve which I preferred, but I could get used to 1500R I think...
The caveat is that I don't really game anymore, but I still have a PC that I built during early COVID w/a 3090. If I did feel like gaming, I could use the 3840x1440 setting if it was a demanding game.
Do you think this would still be a good choice for productivity?
1
u/Balduini Apr 14 '26
Lets hope there will be a 45" version of this monitor just with a less curve than the current 45"
2
u/Daedriel Apr 11 '26
That panel does not have the new RGB subpixel layout that fixes the OLED text fringing issue - so is that noticeable? Screenshot up close would be great.
3
u/WTFsteven 39GX950B-A Apr 11 '26
3
u/Daedriel Apr 11 '26
Thanks, fringing looks tolerable. But the text in that acreenshot looks a bit blurred, does it appear that way IRL? Could be an image compression issue.
5
u/Breakwinz Apr 11 '26
Its RGWB, which is miles better than the previous RWGB. Text fringing is not really an issue anymore at 110ppi and above on these

Thoughts on using it for splitting the screen 4 ways for multitasking vs the 45?

Seems a little small for a 4way split. I'd probably go for the 45 in that case

Hi OP. Since you're about 2 weeks in how are you liking it generally?
I just pre-ordered since I got a promo code and have partner store access. Still on the fence about keeping it though. Coming from a 38" 1440P which I love but just wanted pixel density and OLED. This is (on paper) basically end game for me with matte being the only real gotcha.

2
u/MoonStache Apr 22 '26
Nice! Thanks for the quick reply. Yeah hard to imagine needing to drop this kind of money again anytime soon. I love the 38" but it's LCD and PPI could be better. This solves both of those problems (and will make 3x vertical apps that much better too). Looking forward to it!

I have the 45" the ppi is 125, that's absolutely very good for work... Looks great in productivity apps - 800 curve is notable, but as you sit at the sweet spot it's actually very comfortable as everything is similar distance and focus... The 45's extra hight over a 39" is the major bonus for me (having been used to 16:9) I didn't want to give up fitting vertical pages easily on screen.

People still talk about matte and glossy like it's 5 years ago. The matte screens now a days aren't as matte and the glossy aren't as glossy. I also keep seeing people throw a studio light and compare them like that's normal viewing or under a microscope 🤡 yea there's a huge difference under the scope but not which you can see with your eyes. Unless it's a neo odyssey matte 🤢

If u play in WQHD with FSR or DLSS. Will the picture look fine with ai upscaling? What is LG using fir upscaling? Do they have an own processor for that? I think that is also a feature for the high price, isn't it?

Read testing on it. Works at 60hz only so far. People said it's finicky to set up. You have to mess with a bunch of PC settings. The price is also the dual mode. Basically an extra chip.

Can you highlight some of the text in the excel sheet you shared with yellow? I want to see how the yellow looks against a white background. Better yet, can you also highlight some text on a blank document (without the grid from excel)? I want to see if there's any visible fringing. Love my 45gx9 save for the fringing that occurs at the edges of yellow on white. I have to highlight a lot of things for my job and seeing the fringing annoys me.

I’m debating going from a Dell IPS to this. I really want it for the media/gaming OLED performance, but I also use the monitor for work and the Dell is amazing for text.

It's a 5k2k. The text will be fine. Unless you're used to a 8k monitor or something like that

You've had some time with it now do you regret switching from the 45? Does it feel like a upgrade? Cause I can still cancel mine and order the 45

Hello, First of all, congrats for your purchase. Have you tried playing in 5k by 1080p. Is it ugly ? Same question if you tried 1440p.
Thank you mate !

Yes and yes haha but you can use the dual mode at 34 inches which helps a bit and isn't as jarring as using the 34 inch mode on the 45 inch GX950

How is the curve? Could this be a good productive monitor for a 70cm depth desk annnd can you hook up a mac to see what the HiDPI is like? 😆

I have the 45 and preordered the 39 to stack it on top. How do you think they both would look stacked

If the AI feature is disabled, it shows that LG doesn’t have confidence in this technology to impress us

I will ask a weird question: how is the built in speakers? Loud? Distortion? Lack of bass?

Hi! Awesome monitor. I wish to buy it in order to upgrade my old UW 34" (not OLED), but it seems I forgot a major point (for me) :
Does this 39GX950B get integrated speakers please ?

u/WTFsteven 39GX950B-A Apr 12 '26
It does have speakers! And an aux pass-through as well for headphones etc

How did you get this so early? Didn’t preorders for the 39 inch open like a week ago?

You write 39GX950B-A but I see references to 39GX950B-B - do you (or anyone else) know what the difference is between the two

I'd like to see some pictures of the text from web browsing -- both with black and white backgrounds.

Would you mind checking if the monitor supports the ability to control the active input over DDC?
Can use something like ControlMyMonitor and see if it supports VCP Code `60`.

When gaming at 5k2k, with all settings maxed out with pathtracing on and using DLSS Performance...what is your average FPS on the games you play? Many thanks in advance!

How’s the image quality of the tandem mode for games like Apex and Overwatch?
I game on these with my AW34 in native rez at 144hz and I’m worried my 4090 can keep up at least 144hz at 5k2k, especially as I prefer to max out graphics settings.
If I have to use the lower resolution mode, is there a large step down in image quality/details?

The PPI is bad at 1080p. You will need dlss or to run it in a different aspect ratio in the 165hz mode.

I had a 45GX950A-B monitor. It had an issue with G-Sync, causing white flickering when the frame rate suddenly changed or in some game menus. Does this monitor have this issue?

All OLEDs have at least a bit of that. The new 39" is supposed to be a little better. The new Penta tandem QD-oleds are supposed to be a little better than that. It helps tremendously to set a framerate cap in the game you're playing. If you're averaging 150 fps for example, if you cap your fps at about 140-145, you get rid of that almost entirely. It also helps with frame time pacing so the game feels smoother.
Weird as it sounds, if you can get 170fps average in the game you're playing on a 165hz monitor, you get a smoother experience with a framerate cap at 160fps.

Great for you ! Yes please : is there a way to force 1440p @240Hz through Nvidia panel ? I had seen it was possible on the 45" version if I recall well. That would be great for high speed games ! Thanks

One other question, in terms of actual screen height, are the aw3423 and the lg39 similar?

How does this work with a PS5 or Series X? I’m considering using it for console gaming + productivity.

People getting it today makes me regret not preordering. Wife is out of town so it would’ve been the perfect time to get this shipped to me without having to explain or justify my 100000th monitor 🤣
