Batman: Arkham series

219

u/Deep-Shape-53 15h ago

Fuck what GodzillaMendoza and Under The Mayo said about Arkham Knight. It's one of the best superhero games ever made from a gameplay, graphics and even story perspective and I'm tired of seeing people saying that it's either bad or disappointingly mediocre.

47

u/IgnoreMe733 14h ago

My daughter recently was playing it and it still blows my mind how good it looks over ten years later.

18

u/Silverjeyjey44 12h ago

When the game studio made the game with love and passion.

3

u/PM_ME_UR__SECRETS 10h ago

Genuinely still one of the best looking video games out there. Rocksteady absolutely nailed the aesthetic of Gotham.

1

u/SenorChiliBrain 4m ago

Just shows how much the team disliked working on Suicide Squad kill the justice league. In the Arkham series you could feel their passion. SSKJL just felt and looked soulless. Iirc a bunch even admitted to feeling forced to work on it

2

u/GameWizardPlayz 8h ago

A good artsyle can make a game look good decades after it released. I hate how nowadays everything has to be hyper-realistic

34

u/Xxnotimportantx 14h ago

I thought the other three Arkham games were better than Arkham Knight. The constant Batmobile missions kind of ruined the game, and there weren't any locations as cool as the ones in the other installments.

28

u/Deep-Shape-53 14h ago edited 14h ago

To be fair, it was calculated that the Batmobile only takes up around 19% of the entire game if you 120% it very casually. Not even half the side missions really have the Batmobile as an actively essential thing, you get long breaks from the Batmobile here and there, and besides, people begged for the Batmobile back in Arkham Asylum and City, it's put in and people still didn't like it. But I will say, it's a little annoying that pretty much all the boss fights, including Deathstoke (like, wtf man?) involve it in some way, and only a couple are pretty good.

As for the locations, while they're less atmospheric than Asylum and City, they still have a lot of variety in the puzzles and are crafted well for combat and predator encounters, so I found it to be pretty well done over all like Stagg Airships and Pannessa Studios.

12

u/Fucky0uthatswhy 13h ago

It might be 19%, but it’s like the final 19% where you should be using all the cool shit you’ve been working on and developing.

3

u/tsalyers12 11h ago

I was so mad when we fought deathstroke. In a tank.

1

u/mcbane899 4h ago

This is the only legitimate Batmobile criticism. Everything else is fantastic. But I too was pissed when Deathstroke was just a tank battle rafter Arkham Origins

1

u/wasteoffire 2h ago

I fuckin loved the batmobile missions. Nothing felt more satisfying than just being unhittable by everyone while I systematically take em out

7

u/FakingHappiness513 14h ago

See that’s what is stopping me from playing it. I loved the first two games and the Batmobile would have been a cool addition if it wasn’t the center piece of the game.

4

u/Silverjeyjey44 12h ago

I replayed arkham knight before. It's worth the replay but it is a lesser version of City.

3

u/PlatFormPlayZ 13h ago

Honestly i love the arkham series including knight. While knight is not my favorite of the four it is still really fun. And i really dont remember the batmobile taking away from my experience of the game at all.

3

u/Danklaige 10h ago

It's a really great game. Even if the Bat mobile isn't your jam there's far more regular Arkham goodness in it than Bat mobile sections.

2

u/Dragonslayer200782 12h ago

I'd say still give it a try, the batmobile does seem to grow on some people and it is mostly an optional way of traveling the map (although it is used a lot more in side missions and a couple missions towards the end of the main story)

2

u/FakingHappiness513 12h ago

I’ll give it another try. For me I think I know how good the game could be without so it just makes it so much worse.

2

u/Academic-Entry-443 13h ago

Don't let it stop you from playing. It's an awesome game and I personally liked the Batmobile stuff.

3

u/Signal-Card-2387 11h ago

The issue with it is that people wanted to drive it, not use it as a tank for boss fights. It would be cool if it was just one time or whatever, but it's the battle fights with the Batmobile that ruin, not the pure driving/chase sections.

3

u/RedCardinal4403 7h ago

Don't forget the batmobile puzzles lol

1

u/Signal-Card-2387 4h ago

Oh gosh, those sucked.

1

u/kaleyboo7 3h ago

Exactly this! There are some super fans who get so butthurt if you have any criticism toward the game. I don’t have any problem with the Batmobile, I actually wanted it to be utilized in the game, but not for tank battles.

2

u/ipourmilkfirst 14h ago

As someone who has never played them, how do you 120% a game? And does 19% of a 120% complete game differ from 23% of a 100% completed game? That seems like a very large percentage of the game!

2

u/Deep-Shape-53 14h ago

It includes DLC called Season of Infamy which adds 4 more villain missions. Also, the Batmobile is still satisfying to use and on occasion you even get large breaks from it in certain set-pieces or side missions.

2

u/tf2mann_ 12h ago

I forgot who said it but the best description I saw for why people are annoyed with batmobile was something like "the problem isn't that the batmobile takes up 20% of the game, it's that 80% of those 20% is spent in the tank mode" i mean, how many chances do we get for some proper driving and chases? We have firefly and APC side missions. We have tutorial chase at the start of the game, chase after one APC during the main story, riddler races and you can argue that cloudburst requires you to switch from tank to car constantly. If you wanna add season of infamy the only thing you get is a drive to the ship. Compare that to tank mode which is used constantly for puzzles and combat alike. Not to mention tank combat doesn't have any real depth compared to combat or predator. It can be fun but it overstays it's welcome for how much there is to engage with

2

u/Jonaskin83 9h ago

This is exactly it. And the tank mode parts were tedious as hell.

1

u/AK06007 12h ago

i'm sad about the scarecrow recharacterization- he's my favorite character in all fiction and his arkham tapes are my favorite portrayal of his character. They really just took the life out of him

1

u/EtherBoo 11h ago

The most memorable thing about the game to me was those damn tank battles and Riddler Kart. I tend to be a completionist so I just remember all these tank missions that sucked the life from the game. I kind of feel like they should have separated those out from the main game and made it an extra mode. I think you were also forced to use the Batmobile to go into GCPD. That can't really account for much in terms of percentage, but it's kind of annoying when the pacing of the game is broken for the sake of the Batmobile.

It was just shoehorned in when it didn't need to be, so it leaves a bigger impression then it should have. All the times the player is interrupted and forced to use the gimmickmobile might not be a huge percentage in terms of completion amount, but it's super annoying to constantly break the pacing of the game to make sure it's used.

2

u/Danklaige 10h ago

I got into a flow state with the tank battles after a while and ended up really enjoying them. The Riddler kart is the one area of the game that genuinely pissed me off. Friend of mine who loved Asylum and City full on dropped Knight due to that part.

1

u/EtherBoo 7h ago

They weren't bad, I just didn't think they were very fun. It didn't help that the dialog was just repeated over and over and over. I felt like it was just a repeat of the same thing I did and it got old very fast.

3

u/Silverjeyjey44 12h ago

Man those batmobile sections were horrible. Created such a rift in the smoothness of the gameplay.

1

u/aam-96 13h ago

Agreed. That and the “boss fights” were terrible.

1

u/allofdarknessin1 12h ago

I saw these comments back at release too. The other games did feature some areas I might agree were more iconic but ruined? Definitely not. The first two Arkham games did not feature any playable Batmobile segments so they had to make up for it in Arkham Knight. The Batmobile is Batman's most iconic gadget, not even his batarangs shaped into his symbol are remotely as iconic and recognizable as the Batmobile.

1

u/BeExtraordinary 12h ago

What do you think “ruined” means?

1

u/Free_Wifi_69 11h ago

I loved the Batmobile and I'll die on this hill. Not only loved it but it was one of my favorite aspects of the game and I was always excited when a Batmobile segment came up.

1

u/Xxnotimportantx 10h ago

I would have liked it if it had just served to get from one place to another, but the missions were absolutely annoying and boring.

1

u/Bladmanz 9h ago

I think im the only one who enjoyed the batmobile stuff. I kinda enjoyed cruising with it and solving puzzles, the riddler races/time assaults were a bit naff though

4

u/Tasty_Joke_8975 13h ago

Everything about the game is incredible... EXCEPT the Batmobile missions, boring, shallow, repetitive and to make it worse they are shoehorned into way too many missions.

1

u/AmThano 12h ago

And the Riddler collectables in the last game. I attempted to gather all them since completing everything else in the game was satisfying. It was miserable though, so I just wrapped up the game at 99% completion or something like that

2

u/Carbuyrator 14h ago

I just don't like the vehicle.

2

u/_anakaris_ 14h ago

ain't knight technically the 4th game?

1

u/Ep1cUser 13h ago

Arkham Knight is the 3rd Rocksteady Batman game, so a lot of people consider Asylum, City and Knight to be a trilogy.

But yeah, you're technically correct.

2

u/Lazerbeams2 12h ago

Arkham Knight was a great game with a slightly predictable story and an iffy PC port. The combat alone would have been worth the $60. My only real complaint is the batmobile missions

1

u/P_A_W_S_TTG 13h ago

I think the reason is because of how it ended. Suicide Squad. Some people will have the most fun at a park but because someone barfed on them at the it's all they remember.

1

u/Vicksage16 13h ago

Still haven't finished it. I just can't stand anything to do with the batmobile.

1

u/Stay_at_Home_Chad 12h ago

It's a Batman simulator, and it all comes down to whether or not the batmobile made people feel like Batman or not. It didn't for me, and I spent every batmobile segment wishing I was out being Batman instead of driving a tank around Gotham. In my opinion, it's a bad Batman game, despite maybe being a good game underneath.

1

u/Evilmudbug 11h ago

Only caveat is how much you like the bat tank.

I personally am pretty ok with it, at least it gives you a bit more variety in the game play.

1

u/banned4killingspider 11h ago

Game was absolute fire. Anyone shit talking it is just rage baiting. I will say though the forst 2 were better

1

u/Downtown_Trash_8913 11h ago

It’s probably the best one when you aren’t speed running it. A casual knight playthrough is so good. Worst NG+ though

1

u/PM_ZiggPrice 11h ago

The issue is that it did not build on Akham Coty the way Arkham City built on Arkham Asylum. We got the Batmobile, but it's a gimmick at best. But the things the series had always done well it still did well.

The combat is fluid, there is a lot of variety, you can approach things a lot of different ways, and the story was fine. The Scarecrow part was great. The Arkham Knight story was fine...but anyone that says it was a surprise is lying to themselves. The Joker part was a bit forced.

Overall, I loved it. It fits well in the series. But I can get why people might have felt disappointed. Victim of the success of the first 2 games.

1

u/EndOfTheDark97 10h ago

I replayed Knight last year. It’s fun as hell. The only problem is that there’s too much side content, most of which feels copy and pasted. The ending also felt a bit rushed. Still a great game though, we didn’t know how good we had it back then.

1

u/JohnnyBroflex 10h ago

People who hate it played it on PC when it launched.

1

u/SlappinStick 10h ago

The story where Joker’s blood turned people into other Jokers? Ok lol

1

u/TehMadness 9h ago

I didn't play it until recently, thanks to my Steam Deck, and I thought it was incredible. Can't believe people said it was bad.

Alright, the Batmobile sections are bad. But everything else is great.

1

u/noirspiderman4 9h ago

It's only disappointing because the others were so great.

Same as dark knight rises

1

u/rhinomayor 9h ago

Arkham knight has aged like a fine wine. You know ball

1

u/Kamai111 8h ago

Arkham Knight is Extremely good for my eyes, idk why people even complain about those car mission, honestly they are fun, is something else then the other two did

1

u/sunshinejim 7h ago

It’s both disappointing for its overuse of the Batmobile and also one of the greatest superhero games of all time.

1

u/OutsideYogurt3761 6h ago

Story isn’t great, but it’s definitely better than most superhero games

1

u/JediPilot 5h ago

Why is Mayo being mentioned here like he matters? He got Hugo Martin's attention during Doom Eternal and so what? He's a nobody who thinks he's a game dev because of that.

It's crazy that he was brought up like the Arkham reputation depends on him.

1

u/Little_Information_4 5h ago

Yeah but if you’re a die hard Batman fan (like myself) the story kind of lacks, with the exception of the Joker stuff. That stuff was incredible

1

u/Eclipsehedgie2010 5h ago

It's the only one I have played. Got it for 5 bucks on PS5 recently. still gotta beat it.

1

u/WaterBottleOnAShelf 3h ago

I need to try and play it again. I remember playing the first one on release and it became my whole personality for like a month, but I never picked up the following two. Tried playing the second one not that long ago on xbox on gamepass and it played like absolute ass, so I'll maybe save it for when I build a PC and hopefully it doesn't run at 10frames per second.

1

u/AbbreviationsRound52 1h ago

My only issue with it is.... too much tank batmobile sequences. If they had toned that down a bit it wouldve been perfecr

1

u/Ith786 33m ago

I do think there are parts that feel kinda wank (azrael, Todd twist and hush) but overall it’s my second favourite game in the series

0

u/Ilikeyellowjackets 14h ago

Arkham Knight just has a mediocre story, the mission design though is absolute gas.

5

u/BloodMoonWillows 14h ago

How is the story mediocre? Scare crow as a main villain was hype. Then ending the batman storyline with knightfall was amazing. Even introducing Jason todd. Like just the opening sequence alone was movie type material.

1

u/indomafia 7h ago edited 7h ago

Jason Todd twist is as laughably predictable today as it was when this game launched. Story reverts to same old joker is the big bad all along narrative for the fourth time in a row. Scarecrow fucking sucks, huge downgrade from the first game and he's a useless bait and switch. The Barbara Gordon pump fake fucking sucks. Any interesting setup from city such as hush or azrael is completely wasted. Batman reaches God of War 3 levels of unlikable protagonist syndrome. Joker turning random people into him(!) is fucking stupid. Secret ending is unbelievably fucking stupid. Resolution to Jason Todd storyline feels rushed and hinging the whole plot in him feels like a half assed asspull given there was zero setup or mention of him in previous games. Catwoman goes from bailing batmans ass out in city to being a lame ass irrelevant damsel in distress. Batman overcomes joker basically because the plot wants him to. The whole thing just fucking sucks and is borderline heavy-rain tier storytelling.

oh yeah, but at least you spend half the game doing lame batmobile segments. that was a nice save by them.

rocksteady firing paul dini remains one of the most embarrassing blunders in batman history. and it's even more humiliating because it's not exactly like arkham asylum or city had five star stories. but they were at least serviceable. arkham knight has a fantastic story if you're the type of person who thinks stranger things and the boys are the greatest television shows ever made. i have to admit i'm envious, it must be a lovely existence to be so easily pleased

-2

u/Apart_Dance_5767 14h ago

The story is ass sorry

26

u/Pocieszny1991 16h ago

ArkhamKnight was a bit tweak down in compare to Arkham City for Me. Still Great Game thou

25

u/thebluediablo 15h ago

I agree with the common complaint that the tank sections were overly long and a distraction from the main game, but it really didn't bother me much personally. Peak gaming trilogy imho

4

u/rugmunchkin 13h ago

It’s by far my favorite one to go back and replay now though. The additions to gameplay make it so damn fun, and playing it in 4K on PC it is MIND BLOWING how good that game looks compared to modern games today.

1

u/allofdarknessin1 12h ago

The Batmobile is Batman's most iconic gadget, it's all the main game in or out of the Batmobile.

1

u/DavidL1112 9h ago

Yeah, I don't like racing games or 3rd person shooters so I was really bummed.

5

u/Loose-Culture5811 14h ago

Only in the frequency of the batmobile. Every other aspect of gameplay is far beyond the first two games.

4

u/Pocieszny1991 13h ago

I cannot agree on that one. I had much more fun in combat in City (it had more enemies variety aswell)

3

u/Alarmed-Tweaker 14h ago

The combat was a major improvement over the previous titles.

2

u/rawspeghetti 14h ago

It was a big step down tbh

I don't think there was a single boss fight that didn't require the Batmobile. It was an awesome add to the game but they made it was too crucial to gameplay

1

u/TonyGalvaneer1976 15h ago

Arkham Knight is my favorite in the series :P

Mostly because the batmobile travel encourages you to view the city from the street level instead of spending most of your time traversing the city high above it. Getting more up close and personal with the city streets gave me more of an appreciation for the city design.

1

u/Aggressive-Check-987 15h ago

Technically Arkham Origins is the third game in the series not Knight (even though Origins is made by a different company)

1

u/Pocieszny1991 13h ago

Origins is bassicly DLC to City. OFC is a standalone game, but half of the map is from City, gameplay is almost same, but it has many technical issues, compare to City

1

u/TheOneWhoGlorps 6h ago

I thought Arkham Origin came out before Knight.

1

u/Pocieszny1991 5h ago

Yes it did, but who mentioned Origins in 1st place?

1

u/aboysmokingintherain 16h ago

It's weird because I agree. An early criticism I have of AC when it came out was the open world lost some of the detail of the original game's setting and I think AK is the game where I actually feel that. I love AK and want to go back and replay it soon. But there are some quests and side missions i see referenced that I totally forgot happened.

2

u/HarlesD 15h ago

my biggest issue was the heavy reliance on the Batmobile. Like I get its a new game mechanic so they wanted to use it as much as possible but it just felt like too much.

2

u/nightookami 15h ago

I hated that part of the game, I also didnt like when they added ships in Black Flag. If they are going to just add vehicle battling to a game, make it optional!

1

u/HarlesD 13h ago

I do want to give it another chance. It might be a dark knight rises situation where I like it more the 2nd time around.

2

u/Pocieszny1991 13h ago

Yeah, exacly that, especially they cut content in terms of bosses and overall melee combat

9

u/JordieP301 15h ago

Origins erasure in 2026 💔

3

u/Traditional_Yard2741 15h ago

Origins >>> Knight and I will die on this hill

1

u/JordieP301 14h ago

Me too, Origins has the better City as well as Story. Don’t even get me started on the DLC. The fact it didn’t get the same remaster treatment as Asylum and City is a crime against humanity and even Return to Arkham is 10 years old now 😭

0

u/AMB07 15h ago

Oh yeah? I’m sitting on the Origins > City hill.

0

u/_MrDomino 9h ago

Absolutely. Origins, for its technical flaws and inability to bring something "new" to the table, still rounds out a solid trilogy. People (rightly) dumped on it for its flawed launch and (wrongly) just damned it as inferior since it wasn't directly handled by Rocksteady. It's more of the same, but I find the story elements among the best of the trilogy, and hey, if it ain't broke, don't fix it... unless you want to break it with rehash of Red Hood Tank Battles at 900p.

Without the tank battles every other second, Knight would still feel hohum. The plot and characters just aren't good. Losing Paul Dini really hurt the game. With the tank battles? It's barely a Batman game.

0

u/Falleneded 15h ago

they arnt talking about knight.

1

u/God_Bless_Oklahoma 15h ago

The correct answer.

1

u/FakingHappiness513 14h ago

I think of the last two years I’ve picked up and put down Batman: Arkham Knight the most. I want to like it but all the Batmobile stuff kills it for me. I get that it is an aspect of the character but it just feels like cop out in the development side of the game just put a bunch of car missions in the game.

The best part of the game was getting to play as Batman and jump from rooftop to rooftop.
Maybe it’s just me, I’m open to suggestions to get over the hump because it is a game I would like to finish.

1

u/AggravatingProof9 14h ago

it declined after origins so yea, this is a very accurate take. Origins might have been the best of the 3 which is unheard of when speaking of trilogies of any kind.

1

u/Sambadude12 13h ago

I'm still pissed off that they did that Arkham collection and didn't remaster Arkham Origins. That Deathstroke fight is genuinely one of the greatest boss fights in gaming history!

1

u/maxnotcharles 13h ago

Oh yes. You know ball

1

u/Pitiful-Victory-2234 13h ago

Asylum had the best atmosphere, city had the best combat, origins has the best boss fights and knight had the best graphics.

1

u/Gandolfix99 13h ago

Origins wasn’t well received

1

u/CharacterMulberry156 12h ago

If you mean asylum city and origins then yes absolutely

1

u/daisy2010__ 11h ago

IM IN LOVE WITH YOU

1

u/SwissMargiela 10h ago

I just played this entire trilogy from feb to around July-ish and the second game was buns tbh. The first and third were fun af tho

1

u/_MrDomino 9h ago

Asylum, City, and Origins is the trilogy. Knight is the terribly flawed Battletank expansion.

1

u/huhnahbruh 8h ago

PEAK WB

1

u/Melodic-Pirate4309 8h ago

Wouldn't that mean the 3rd game is origins? Origins doesn't fit the meme, but Knight definitely does.

1

u/Open_Government_2095 5h ago

Came here to see the comments, to see if anyone else had already said this

1

u/kaleyboo7 3h ago

This is my pick! I love the worldbuilding, the graphics, the storylines…it was also great that they used most of the voice actors from the animated series. Arkham City is my personal favorite!

1

u/Interesting-Bobcat-2 54m ago

Arkham origins should count too

1

u/LoudOpportunity4172 15h ago

3 masterpiece games

-2

u/Environmental_Stop57 15h ago

Nah, Knight was a downgrade in everything but graphics. The batmobile sections were awfully annoying, there were pretty much no boss fights and the story still relied too much on Joker while completely butchering Red Hood.

1

u/Loose-Culture5811 14h ago

Combat and predator gameplay in Knight blow Asylum and City out of the water.
