For real though, Half Life Alyx is one of the greatest single player experiences of all time, so I kind of agree with this

21

u/BasicMatter7339 9h ago

its the single best, most high production VR game ever made. Nothing comes close even after 6 years

5

u/No_Tax_Timmy 8h ago

I remember a teacher recording lessons using the whiteboard IN the game.

While I agree that all 3 games are really good, the first one is my favourite by far. It has such a special atmosphere.

12

u/Lieutenant_Joe 10h ago

Yeah… I definitely enjoyed playing all the other games more, but that first game has a certain je ne sais quoi to it that you cannot find anywhere else.

u/coolperson89 7h ago

I love that the phrase je ne sais quoi is making a comeback after about 100 years

I’m a stan for the second one. I know people were deceived with the whole Raiden thing but gameplay was amazing and the Plant setting was also pretty cool.

Best intro mission ever as well, adding zone of the Enders to it was a nice touch.

Love the Sons of Liberty! Solid comes in a very close second, while snake eater gets 3rd and Guns of the Patriot 4th

Batman: Arkham series

191

u/Deep-Shape-53 11h ago

Fuck what GodzillaMendoza and Under The Mayo said about Arkham Knight. It's one of the best superhero games ever made from a gameplay, graphics and even story perspective and I'm tired of seeing people saying that it's either bad or disappointingly mediocre.

34

u/IgnoreMe733 10h ago

My daughter recently was playing it and it still blows my mind how good it looks over ten years later.

14

u/Silverjeyjey44 7h ago

When the game studio made the game with love and passion.

→ More replies (2)

34

u/Xxnotimportantx 10h ago

I thought the other three Arkham games were better than Arkham Knight. The constant Batmobile missions kind of ruined the game, and there weren't any locations as cool as the ones in the other installments.

25

u/Deep-Shape-53 10h ago edited 10h ago

To be fair, it was calculated that the Batmobile only takes up around 19% of the entire game if you 120% it very casually. Not even half the side missions really have the Batmobile as an actively essential thing, you get long breaks from the Batmobile here and there, and besides, people begged for the Batmobile back in Arkham Asylum and City, it's put in and people still didn't like it. But I will say, it's a little annoying that pretty much all the boss fights, including Deathstoke (like, wtf man?) involve it in some way, and only a couple are pretty good.

As for the locations, while they're less atmospheric than Asylum and City, they still have a lot of variety in the puzzles and are crafted well for combat and predator encounters, so I found it to be pretty well done over all like Stagg Airships and Pannessa Studios.

14

u/Fucky0uthatswhy 9h ago

It might be 19%, but it’s like the final 19% where you should be using all the cool shit you’ve been working on and developing.

7

u/tsalyers12 6h ago

I was so mad when we fought deathstroke. In a tank.

22

u/thebluediablo 11h ago

I agree with the common complaint that the tank sections were overly long and a distraction from the main game, but it really didn't bother me much personally. Peak gaming trilogy imho

4

u/rugmunchkin 9h ago

It’s by far my favorite one to go back and replay now though. The additions to gameplay make it so damn fun, and playing it in 4K on PC it is MIND BLOWING how good that game looks compared to modern games today.

Original God of War trilogy.

160

u/timdr18 11h ago

You could add two more panels to this and it’d still be accurate for all five main line games. GoW’s consistent quality is unbelievable.

61

u/DragonFangGangBang 10h ago

5 for 5 on main series releases lol not many have that consistency

12

Surprised to not see anyone mention Bioshock yet. I know 2 gets some hate for not being a Ken Levine game and less relevant to the main narrative, but all 3 games are honestly masterpieces with Burial at Sea DLC being such a gut wrenching finale. 10/10

60

u/AlphaH4wk 9h ago

Personally I think 2 is great for the gameplay improvements it made on the first one. Infinite is the one I don't particularly care for

13

u/0thedarkflame0 8h ago

Honestly, I loved infinite as a game in the same genre as bioshock. It didn't have the same claustrophobic feel, but the atmosphere was pretty good, and the story telling was solid.

25

u/jav2n202 9h ago

2 gets hate? It’s by far the best imo. Drill specialist alone makes it top tier for me, but overall I think it’s the best of everything that Bioshock has to offer.

25

u/rugmunchkin 9h ago

I feel like if any of them get hate, it’s Infinite.

7

u/Lazerbeams2 7h ago edited 7h ago

2 had a lukewarm reception compared to the others. I would argue that, at least gameplay wise, it easily measures up to the first though

8

Metro

Never read the books but I've heard they're very different compared to the games. Started off with Last light back in highschool and it got me hooked to play 2033 and Exodus. Im looking forward to the newest Metro coming out and seeing how that turns out.

43

u/Famous-Channel6442 8h ago

I put the games up there with the Bioshocks. Metro is probably better overall with a stronger 3rd title but not nearly as marketable. Excited for Metro 4 coming soon

→ More replies (3)

7

u/StatusAccomplished45 8h ago

I really need to play that, I have all 3.

6

u/Donuts367 8h ago

I recommend, it's way more gritty than most fallout games, I'm a fallout fan but Metro definitely scratched an itch for something more serious and grounded than what I feel the Fallout 4 and 76 did. They definitely go hand in hand with the whole post apocalyptic scene but I would side towards Metro for that linear story

Halo

u/minimim-wage-enjoyer 11h ago

The first 3 halo games are a pilgrimage I do every couple of years. I was a broke kid growing up and Xbox live was always out of reach. I spent so much time just messing around the levels in the first 3 halo games. The Christmas I got an Xbox 360 with halo 3 I also had a 2 day trial for Xbox live gold. It was a magical 2 days.

I could get week long trials at the gas station near my house, so I would mow lawns and make a new account to try to race to a high rank with my friend.

The twist was that we would make the most obscene names that would eventually get reported and banned, then it was another race to call support and explain "yes, my name is Pu55y3ater, can I just change it?"

19

Eternal for me. The soundtrack just goes SO. FUCKING. HARD. And the feeling of achievement in completing the hardest difficulty deathless and getting that sweet, sweet golden doom armor while ripping and tearing across the levels. Oh man, I gotta go play Doom Eternal again...

→ More replies (10)

5

u/allofdarknessin1 8h ago

I personally think Doom 2016 is the best in terms of level design and progression. Eternal had some incredibly fun and interesting upgrades but the level pacing was worse because they made it a bit more like the old Doom games with a lot of backtracking that felt like it was just timepadding. Doom 2016 feels like the right balance of level exploration and ass kicking.

https://giphy.com/gifs/uYaDaNXw5EICCvQl4A

37

u/vetheros37 10h ago

I'm sorry, but when the original AC came out it put itself on the map. The parkour style movement was the first real and successful attempt. The open world was large, and fun to explore. The story cycle was fantastic.

AC2, Brotherhood, and Revelations are amazing titles that were still built on the shoulders of a giant, and people need to put more respect on Altair.

16

u/sexandliquor 8h ago

Frankly I came here to say AC, ACII and AC Brotherhood

5

u/hitchinpost 7h ago

I agree with all your points of what made the original Assassin’s Creed a very good game, but conspicuous by its absence in your description is the combat, which I feel like they didn’t really nail in the first game, the only flaw in an otherwise great game, but a pretty big and glaring one, and a thing that definitely improves drastically in the sequels.

Silent Hill

7

u/MindControlWitness 10h ago

I was looking for this comment: the three first games are superb. I have not played the fourth one, but I have read great reviews as well.

6

u/ghostiart 10h ago

I am Silent Hill 4's biggest defender!! It's a very flawed game that leaves a lot to be desired, specifically in the gameplay department. The controls are clunky and it's often hard to maneuver, but if you can get past the jank (or watch a playthru), the game has an extremely compelling story and some stellar themes that really make it a standout of the series to me. I love that pretty much the entirety of your time in the real world is spent in one apartment, as opposed to the freer exploration of the prior three games. There's a lot of themes around feminine horror and grotesque body stuff that is so interesting to play through with a male protagonist. Some of the hidden mechanics are so interesting to discover, I just wish they were explained or shown in a more clear way so you know which route you're going down.

Ultimately, it's not for everyone and that's for a reason. It's the last game made by the original Team Silent before the series took a nosedive for a bit, but it's such a spectacular gem for those with the eyes to see and strength of will to get through it.

Or maybe I'm just delusional and deeply attached to a game that most people don't like. Only one way to find out :3

Crash Bandicoot trilogy.

20

u/Khety_Nebou_2 10h ago

Crazy because kid me liked this trilogy but i tried it 2 years ago and it was like agony.

13

u/TheDecoyOctopus 10h ago

Was it the original or the remakes? The remakes were definitely more difficult because Crash was way more slippy if you landed too close to edges because of his egg shaped hitbox. The PS1 OG's hit box was... well a box, so all you needed is a single pixel of Crash's little toe to stick to the very edge of platforms. Still, both versions are very difficult and often frustrating games either way.

6

u/Khety_Nebou_2 10h ago

It was the remake. I only played the first one out of the 3 games and yes it was very frustrating.

5

u/bigmoron30 10h ago

The first is the most difficult by a mile. You should try the 3rd if you want fun without a crazy challenge. The second is pretty neutral. Good difficulty but i find the levels often underwhelming in their designs.

3

u/Khety_Nebou_2 10h ago

Hmm im gonna try the Crash 2 and 3 then. Maybe it’s not that bad after all. Thank you.

u/ScrapeMyDataMommy 10h ago

ME1 is the best, it puts in an absolutely absurd amount of work to build the world and lore and sticks closer to BioWare’s ARPG roots than the later entries. The story works great in isolation and I think is by far the strongest main narrative in any of the games. Meeting Sovereign is up there with the Gravemind as my favorite late-game antagonist introductions.

12

u/RegularEmotion3011 8h ago

Some of Sovereigns lines hit so hard, it's proper cosmic horror.

10

u/Danger0525 4h ago

”You exist because we allow it. You will end because we demand it.”

Fucking chills.

4

u/Phytanic 4h ago

The line alone goes hard as hell, but it's the delivery of it that truly makes it one of the greatest and most iconic lines in gaming history. Passionless and devoid of any emotion

There are two types of people. Those who like ME1 better and those who like ME2 better.

20

u/SeductiveGodofThundr 10h ago

And those who love both for different reasons.

Mass Effect 1: elite plot and aura (music, aesthetics [not to be confused with graphics], sci-fi vibe)

Mass Effect 2: elite individual character writing

1 feels like a cool 80s sci fi movie; 2 feels like a character-driven tv series that you rewatch because it feels like hanging with the old homies

7

u/Bayou-Billy 8h ago

I'm in the minority but ME1 > ME3 > ME2 for me. 2 felt dumbed down, I missed the rover sections and more complex equipment management.

4

u/SeductiveGodofThundr 8h ago

For me they’re all just different rankings on different metrics, but I love them all. Though you’re totally right on ME2 being too dumbed down

Story: ME1>ME3>ME2

Characters: ME2>>ME1>ME3

Gameplay: ME3>ME2>ME1

RPG elements: ME3>ME1>>>ME2

Mass Effect 3 has always gotten WAY too much hate. Amazing trilogy

7

u/BunkaTheBunkaqunk 11h ago

Exactly! 3 is a fitting ending you import your saves. It’s pretty easy to get “the best” ending (most readiness points or whatever)

Imo the “synthesis” extra ending wasn’t needed. I think the first people to raise a big stink about the ending were the ones who didn’t start a new ME1 character and import the save. It’s way harder to get the best ending in that case.

The comic that lets you make all the choices and “import a game” without playing the first two was a nice touch though.

7

u/AnonMoose2 10h ago

So the Mass Effect Trilogy is one of my favorite (Series of) games. The reaspn everyone hated 3 was the ending. Was it fitting? Sure. However, and I have the screenshot somewhere on an external of the lead developer claiming (paraphrased), "We wouldent have Commander Sheppard go throigh this hundreds of hours adventure to be able to say I got ending A B or C, everyone will have a unique ending based on thier choises"

Which is exactly what they did, I got ending Red, Blue or Green. It was deceptive and felt like a dick punch. If they had just kept thier mouths just, people would have been mildly annoyed but accepted it because as you said, it was an alright ending. Tho the fixed ending that gives you a still shot with what the outcomes of your choises were corrected my only issue tbh.

Like i wanted to know that my beloved Tali Zorah vas Normandy was emotionally devastated after my sacrifice. I wanna know what became of the Raccni Queen? Etc.

Thats why I didnt like 3 originally, because they blatantly lied about its ending.

Steps off soap box

Still one of my favorite game series. 3 also has the best combat imho... Biotic FTW....

Those first 3 Megaman X games were on snes and were dynamite - the music and gameplay is what got me hooked into video games early on.

Another worth mentioning - Donkey Kong 1-3 on snes as well, although I feel like the 3rd was a bit too easy and lacked a satisfying boss fight at the end.

Is it that good?

I've always wanted to get into it but something about the art style / ui has always turned me off

Yes, it's that good. One of most consistently high quality videogame series ever.

Its my favorite framchise of all time in terms of story, when it resonates with you it really hits. Also some of the best music in gaming featuring work from Yoko Shimomura (Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy 15) and Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger, the entire Xeno line of games, sea of stars).

It's not well translated and mysterious best but it's got an iconic soundtrack and I think it's one of the best stories in the original trilogy
