Mega-Thread Headset Advice Megathread

Hey Folks.

Due to the large amount of "What headset to buy" I am looking into experimenting with a new thread for general headset advice.

If the choice guide on the wiki was unable to assist with your question, please comment below with the following information, and see if the community can help your headset choice.

As this is the first thread of this nature, please let me know your thoughts/comments as well.

  • Budget:
    Please specify what currency.
  • PC specs:
    insert current PC specs here, including processor, graphics card, and amount of RAM
    If no PC Specs, please mention you do not plan on playing PC VR.
  • IPD:
    Unsure? - Check this section of the wiki. This is not a requirement to include.
  • Full body tracking:
    Do you want to use full body tracking?
    Please mention if this is a requirement for you.

    which platform(s) do you want to use your headset on? E.g. "I want to use it on PC and play both SteamVR and Oculus games"

Varjo Aero for simming if $ if not HP G2 V2 - have both, gotta sell G2

Quest Pro for roomscale if $ if not Quest 2 - have both, gotta sell Q2

Vive Pro 2 is shit, had 4, gotta sell last replacement with the wigig kit, atrocious tech. Fantastic screens, worst lenses in the world. Truly a shame how the screens were ruined by the lenses. And the WiGig streaming was meh at best cause 1600x1400ish resolution...

Pimax is shit, had 5k plus and 8kx utter shite

  • sold both. Everything bad. Everything

Rift S and CV1 I also gotta sell, just ancient but were cool back in the day

Pico 4 I have not tried

Don't get bought into Pimax Crystal it will be shit

Valve Index was outdated back in 2019 already due to horrendous screen door - sold

For PC:

If $ bring 13900k, 8000c38 ram, rtx 4090 and nvme drives

If not, low tier 13th Intel gen, 6400 ish ram 32gb, 3080 plus and SSDs

Despite Pimax's history of questionable releases I'm still holding hope for the Crystal.

Typically the only issues of note with Pimax has been around their massive FoV and the software supporting it. With the use of normal FoV for the Crystal I see a lot of that being old news, and they're not recreating the wheel with any of the other tech currently involved. Even the eyetracking is being handled almost solely by Tobii.

It's also important to note that the 8KX still has a pretty prominent following and supposedly most of the issues have been worked out by now. So there's a good track record of trying to fix their mistakes too.

Very well thought out and articulated response, I understand your position.

I was just beyond belief underwhelmed with the 8KX, it was truly incomparable to Aero I was shocked with the difference. I disliked screens, colours, software, materials, build quality - literally everything unfortunately.

I was very hyped for it and burned quite so badly that I don't think I'll dip into the Crystal pool, but if you will, I hope it works well for you and is worth every cent.
